| 16 | Determination of groundwater potential distribution in Kulfo-Hare watershed through integration of GIS, remote sensing, and AHP in Southern Ethiopia显示文摘Identification of groundwater potential areas(GPA)is important in regions facing surface water scarcity,as it assists in effective planning and utilization of groundwater for various purposes.This study employs the methods of remote sensing(RS),geographic information system(GIS)model,and analytical hierarchy process(AHP),multi-criteria decision analysis(MCDA)to locate and map the prospective groundwater areas in the Kulfo-Hare watershed.Seven significant groundwater influencing factors were selected for the determination of groundwater potential in the area:Geology,land use/land cover(LULC),soil,rainfall,slope,drainage density,and lineament density.By applying a five-class classification scheme(very low,low,moderate,high,and very high),the GIS models were used to define the distribution of groundwater potential areas in terms of area coverage(km^(2)),percentage and mapping.The results show that the groundwater potential(GWP)distribution in the research region is as follows:9.7%(6035.9 ha)classified as very high GWP,29.6%(18606 ha)classified as high,24.5%(15245 ha)classified as moderate,18.1%(11431 ha)as low and 18.1%(11492 ha)very low GWP,on the basis of the weighted overlay evaluation.Although a few regions are identifies as extremely low GWP,most of the study area is characterized by very high to moderate GWP.These findings provide valuable insight for sustainable groundwater planning by the government bodies,decision-makers,and private sectors. | Edmealem Temesgen Demelash Wendmagegnehu Goshime Destaw Akili | 2023 | Journal of Groundwater Science and Engineering2023,11,3: | 0 |
| 17 | Modeling streamflow and sediment using SWAT in Ethiopian Highlands显示文摘The coincidence of intensive rainfall events at the beginning of the rainy season and unprotected soil conditions after extreme dry spells expose the Ethiopian Highlands to severe soil erosion.Soil and water conservation measures(SWC)have been applied to counteract land degradation in the endangered areas,but SWC efficiency may vary related to the heterogeneity of the landscape.The Soil and Water Assessment Tool(SWAT)model was used to model hydrology and sediment dynamics of a 53.7 km^(2)watershed,located in the Lake Tana basin,Ethiopia.Spatially distributed stone bund impacts were applied in the model through modification of the surface runoff ratio and adjustment of a support practice factor simulating the trapped amounts of water and sediment at the SWC structure and watershed level.The resulting Nash-Sutcliffe efficiency(NSE)for daily streamflow simulation was 0.56 for the calibration and 0.48 for the validation period,suggesting satisfactory model performance.In contrast,the daily sediment simulation resulted in unsatisfactory model performance,with the NSE value of 0.07 for the calibration and–1.76 for the validation period and this could be as a result of high intensity and short duration rainfall events in the watershed.Meanwhile,insufficient sediment yield prediction may result to some extent from daily based data processing,whereas the driving runoff events and thus sediment loads occur on sub-daily time scales,probably linked with abrupt gully breaks and development.The calibrated model indicated 21.08 Mg/hm^(2)average annual sediment yield,which is far beyond potential soil regeneration rate.Despite the given limits of model calibration,SWAT may support the scaling up and out of experimentally proven SWC interventions to encourage sustainable agriculture in the Ethiopian Highlands. | Hailu Kendie Addis Stefan Strohmeier Feras Ziadat Nigus Demelash Melaku Andreas Klik | 2016 | International Journal of Agricultural and Biological Engineering2016,9,5: | 0 |
