1Enhanced secondary pollution offset reduction of primary emissions during COVID-19 lockdown in China显示文摘To control the spread of the 2019 novel coronavirus(COVID-19),China imposed nationwide restrictions on the movement of its population(lockdown)after the Chinese New Year of 2020,leading to large reductions in economic activities and associated emissions.Despite such large decreases in primary pollution,there were nonetheless several periods of heavy haze pollution in eastern China,raising questions about the well-established relationship between human activities and air quality.Here,using comprehensive measurements and modeling,we show that the haze during the COVID lockdown was driven by enhancements of secondary pollution.In particular,large decreases in NOx emissions from transportation increased ozone and nighttime NO_(3)radical formation,and these increases in atmospheric oxidizing capacity in turn facilitated the formation of secondary particulate matter.Our results,afforded by the tragic natural experiment of the COVID-19 pandemic,indicate that haze mitigation depends upon a coordinated and balanced strategy for controlling multiple pollutants.Xin Huang Aijun Ding Jian Gao Bo Zheng Derong Zhou Ximeng Qi Rong Tang Jiaping Wang Chuanhua Ren Wei Nie Xuguang Chi Zheng Xu Liangduo Chen Yuanyuan Li Fei Che Nini Pang Haikun Wang Dan Tong Wei Qin Wei Cheng Weijing Liu Qingyan Fu Baoxian Liu Fahe Chai Steven JDavis Qiang Zhang Kebin He 2021National Science Review2021,8,2:47

5NH_3-SCR denitration catalyst performance over vanadium–titanium with the addition of Ce and Sb显示文摘Selective catalytic reduction technology using NH3 as a reducing agent(NH3-SCR) is an effective control method to remove nitrogen oxides. TiO2-supported vanadium oxide catalysts with different levels of Ce and Sb modification were prepared by an impregnation method and were characterized by X-ray diffractometer(XRD), Brunauer–Emmett–Teller(BET), Transmission electron microscopy(TEM), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy(FT-IR), UV–Vis diffuse reflectance spectroscopy(UV–Vis DRS), Raman and Hydrogen temperature-programmed reduction(H2-TPR). The catalytic activities of V5 CexS by/TiO2 catalysts for denitration were investigated in a fixed bed flow microreactor. The results showed that cerium, vanadium and antimony oxide as the active components were well dispersed on TiO2, and the catalysts exhibited a large number of d–d electronic transitions, which were helpful to strengthen SCR reactivity. The V5 CexS by/TiO2 catalysts exhibited a good low temperature NH3-SCR catalytic activity. In the temperature range of 210 to 400℃, the V5 CexS by/TiO2 catalysts gave NO conversion rates above 90%. For the best V5Ce35Sb2/TiO2 catalyst, at a reaction temperature of 210℃, the NO conversion rate had already reached 90%. The catalysts had different catalytic activity with different Ce loadings. 7Bacteriophage therapy against Enterobacteriaceae显示文摘The Enterobacteriaceae are a class of gram-negative facultative anaerobic rods, which can cause a variety of diseases, such as bacteremia, septic arthritis, endocarditis, osteomyelitis, lower respiratory tract infections, skin and soft-tissue infections, urinary tract infections, intra-abdominal infections and ophthalmic infections, in humans, poultry, animals and fish. Disease caused by Enterobacteriaceae cause the deaths of millions of people every year, resulting in enormous economic loss. Drug treatment is a useful and efficient way to control Enterobacteriaceae infections. However, with the abuse of antibiotics, drug resistance has been found in growing number of Enterobacteriaceae infections and, as such, there is an urgent need to find new methods of control. Bacteriophage therapy is an efficient alternative to antibiotics as it employs a different antibacterial mechanism. 8An innovative wood-chip-framework substrate used as slow-release carbon source to treat high-strength nitrogen wastewater显示文摘Removal of nitrogen in wastewater before discharge into receiving water courses is an important consideration in treatment systems.However,nitrogen removal efficiency is usually limited due to the low carbon/nitrogen(C/N) ratio.A common solution is to add external carbon sources,but amount of liquid is difficult to determine.Therefore,a combined wood-chip-framework substrate(with wood,slag and gravel) as a slow-release carbon source was constructed in baffled subsurface-flow constructed wetlands to overcome the problem.Results show that the removal rate of ammonia nitrogen(NH_4^+-N),total nitrogen(TN) and chemical oxygen demand(COD) could reach 37.5%-85%,57.4%-86%,32.4%-78%,respectively,indicating the combined substrate could diffuse sufficient oxygen for the nitrification process(slag and gravel zone) and provide carbon source for denitrification process(wood-chip zone).The nitrification and denitrification were determined according to the location of slag/gravel and wood-chip,respectively.Nitrogen removal was efficient at the steady phase before a shock loading using slag-wood-gravel combined substrate because of nitrification-denitrification process,while nitrogen removal was efficient under a shock loading with wood-slag-gravel combined substrate because of ANAMMOX process.This study provides a new idea for wetland treatment of high-strength nitrogen wastewater.Huai Li Zifang Chi Baixing Yan Long Cheng Jianzheng Li 2017Journal of Environmental Sciences2017,29,1:10
9Mass production of 2D materials by intermediate-assisted grinding exfoliation显示文摘The scalable and high-efficiency production of 2D materials is a prerequisite to their commercial use.Currently,only graphene and graphene oxide can be produced on a ton scale,and the inability to produce other 2D materials on such a large scale hinders their technological applications.Here we report a grinding exfoliation method that uses micro-particles as force intermediates to resolve applied compressive forces into a multitude of small shear forces,inducing the highly efficient exfoliation of layer materials.The method;referred to as intermediate-assisted grinding exfoliation(iMAGE);can be used for the large-scale production of many 2D materials.As an example;we have exfoliated bulk h-BN into 2D h-BN with large flake sizes;high quality and structural integrity,with a high exfoliation yield of 67%,a high production rate of 0.3 g h^-1 and a low energy consumption of 3.01 x 106 J g^-1.The production rate and energy consumption are one to two orders of magnitude better than previous results.Besides h-BN,this iMAGE technology has been used to exfoliate various layer materials such as graphite,black phosphorus,transition metal dichalcogenides;and metal oxides;provings universality.Molybdenite concentrate,a natural low-cost and abundant mineral;was used as a demo for the large-scale exfoliation production of 2D M0S2 flakes.Our work indicates the huge potential of the iMAGE method to produce large amounts of various 2D materials;which paves the way for their commercial application.Chi Zhang Junyang Tan Yikun Pan Xingke Cai Xiaolong Zou Hui-Ming Cheng Bilu Liu 2020National Science Review2020,7,2:10

11Regulating Effects of Novel CpG Chitosan-nanoparticles on Immune Responses of Mice to Porcine Paratyphoid Vaccines显示文摘Objective To study the regulating effects of a novel CpG oligodeoxynuleotide and the synergistic effect of chitosan-nanoparticles (CNP) with CpG on immune responses of mice, which were used to develop a novel immunoadjuvant to boost immune response to conventional vaccines. Methods A novel CpG ODN containing 11 CpG motifs was synthesized and its bioactivities to stimulate the proliferation of lymphocytes of pig in vitro were detected. Then it was entrapped with CNP prepared in our laboratory by the method of ionic cross linkage, and immunized Kunming mice were co-inoculated with paratyphoid vaccine. The peripheral blood was collected weekly from the tail vein of inoculated mice to detect the contents of IgG, IgA, IgM, and specific antibody against salmonella as well as the levels of interleukin-2 (IL2), IL-4, and IL-6 by SABC-ELISA assay. The numbers of leucocytes, monocytes, granuloytes, and lymphocytes were calculated separately using the routine method. The experimental mice were orally challenged with virulent salmonella 35 days after inoculation. Results This CpG ODN could remarkably provoke the proliferation of lymphocytes of pig in vitro in contrast with the control (P<0.05). Compared with those of the control, immunoglobulins, including IgG, IgA, IgM, and specific antibodies to paratyphoid vaccine, increased significantly in sera from the CpG or CpG-CNP-vaccinated mice (P<0.05). IL-2, IL-4, and IL-6 increased remarkably in sera from immunized mice (P<0.05). The leucocytes, monocytes, granuloytes, and lymphocytes of the mice immunized with CpG or CpG-CNP were also increased in number (P<0.05). After the challenge, these immunity values were elevated in the mice vaccinated with CpG or CpG-CNP. The immunized mice all survived, while the control mice fell ill with evident lesions with diffuse hemorrhage in stomach, small intestine, and peritoneum. 12A plasmonic route for the integrated wireless communication of subdiffraction-limited signals显示文摘Perfect lenses,superlenses and time-reversal mirrors can support and spatially separate evanescent waves,which is the basis for detecting subwavelength information in the far field.However,the inherent limitations of these methods have prevented the development of systems to dynamically distinguish subdiffraction-limited signals.Utilizing the physical merits of spoof surface plasmon polaritons(SPPs),we demonstrate that subdiffraction-limited signals can be transmitted on planar integrated SPP channels with low loss,low channel interference,and high gain and can be radiated with a very low environmental sensitivity.Furthermore,we show how deep subdiffraction-limited signals that are spatially coupled can be distinguished after line-of-sight wireless transmission.For a visualized demonstration,we realize the high-quality wireless communication of two movies on subwavelength channels over the line of sight in real time using our plasmonic scheme,showing significant advantages over the conventional methods.Hao Chi Zhang Le Peng Zhang Pei Hang He Jie Xu Cheng Qian Francisco J.Garcia-Vidal Tie Jun Cui 2020Light(Science & Applications)2020,9,1:8

15A GLP-1 analog lowers ER stress and enhances protein folding to ameliorate homocysteine-induced endothelial dysfunction显示文摘Hyperhomocysteinemia(HHcy)is an independent risk factor for cardiovascular diseases and increases mortality in type 2 diabetic patients.HHcy induces endoplasmic reticulum(ER)stress and oxidative stress to impair endothelial function.The glucagon-like peptide 1(GLP-1)analog exendin-4 attenuates endothelial ER stress,but the detailed vasoprotective mechanism remains elusive.The present study investigated the beneficial effects of exendin-4 against HHcy-induced endothelial dysfunction.Exendin-4 pretreatment reversed homocysteine-induced impairment of endothelium-dependent relaxations in C57BL/6 mouse aortae ex vivo.Four weeks subcutaneous injection of exendin-4 restored the impaired endothelial function in both aortae and mesenteric arteries isolated from mice with diet-induced HHcy.Exendin-4 treatment lowered superoxide anion accumulation in the mouse aortae both ex vivo and in vivo.Exendin-4 decreased the expression of ER stress markers(e.g.,ATF4,spliced XBP1,and phosphorylated eIF2α)in human umbilical vein endothelial cells(HUVECs),and this change was reversed by cotreatment with compound C(CC)(AMPK inhibitor).Exendin-4 induced phosphorylation of AMPK and endothelial nitric oxide synthase in HUVECs and arteries.Exendin-4 increased the expression of endoplasmic reticulum oxidoreductase(ERO1α),an important ER chaperone in endothelial cells,and this effect was mediated by AMPK activation.Experiments using siRNA-mediated knockdown or adenoviral overexpression revealed that ERO1αmediated the inhibitory effects of exendin-4 on ER stress and superoxide anion production,thus ameliorating HHcy-induced endothelial dysfunction.The present results demonstrate that exendin-4 reduces HHcy-induced ER stress and improves endothelial function through AMPK-dependent ERO1αupregulation in endothelial cells and arteries.AMPK activation promotes the protein folding machinery in endothelial cells to suppress ER stress.Chak Kwong Cheng Jiang-Yun Luo Chi Wai Lau William Chi-shing Cho Chi Fai Ng Ronald Ching Wan Ma Xiao Yu Tian Yu Huang 2021Acta Pharmacologica Sinica2021,42,10:6
16Stability of interacting grid-connected power converters显示文摘The power grid in a typical micro distribution system is non-ideal,presenting itself as a voltage source with significant impedance.Thus,grid-connected converters interact with each other via the non-ideal grid.In this study,we consider the practical scenario of voltage-source converters connected to a three-phase voltage source with significant impedance.We show that stability can be compromised in the interacting converters.Specifically,the stable operating regions in selected parameter space may be reduced when grid-connected converters interact under certain conditions.In this paper,we develop bifurcation boundaries in the parameter space with respect to Hopftype instability.A small-signal model in the dq-frame is adopted to analyze the system using an impedance-based approach.Moreover,results are presented in design-oriented forms so as to facilitate the identification of variation trends of the parameter ranges that guarantee stable operation.Cheng WAN Meng HUANG Chi K.TSE Xinbo RUAN 2013Journal of Modern Power Systems and Clean Energy2013,1,3:6
17Freeform OST-HMD system with large exit pupil diameter and vision correction capability显示文摘Compactness and light weight,large exit pupil diameter and distance,small distortion for virtual image,and see-through light paths are pivotal factors to achieve a better,wearable experience of optical see-through headmounted displays(OST-HMDs).In addition,light efficiency of the virtual image light path is an important factor for heat dissipation in HMD devices.This paper presents a new type of OST-HMD optical system that includes three wedge-shaped freeform prisms and two symmetric lenses.Based on a 0.71 in.microdisplay,an OST-HMD prototype with a diagonal field of view(FOV)of 45.3°,an F-number(F/#)of 1.8,an exit pupil size of 12 mm×8 mm,and an eye relief of 18 mm is demonstrated.The maximum value of distortion of the final system is 0.6%and 0.4%for virtual image and see-through light path,respectively.The overall dimension of the optical system per eye is no larger than 30 mm(width)×40 mm(height)×14 mm(thickness),and the weight of the optical module including lenses,holder,and microdisplay is 12.8 g.The light efficiency of the virtual image light path is up to 50%higher than those of other OST-HMD optical solutions.DEWEN CHENG JIAXI DUAN HAILONG CHEN HE WANG DANYANG LI QIWEI WANG QICHAO HOU TONG YANG WEIHONG HOU DONGHUA WANG XIAOYU CHI BIN JIANG YONGTIAN WANG 2022Photonics Research2022,10,1:5
18Bandgap prediction by deep learning in configurationally hybridized graphene and boron nitride显示文摘It is well-known that the atomic-scale and nano-scale configuration of dopants can play a crucial role in determining the electronic properties of materials.However,predicting such effects is challenging due to the large range of atomic configurations that are possible.Here,we present a case study of how deep learning algorithms can enable bandgap prediction in hybridized boron–nitrogen graphene with arbitrary supercell configurations.A material descriptor that enables correlation of structure and bandgap was developed for convolutional neural networks.Bandgaps calculated by ab initio calculations,and corresponding structures,were used as training datasets.The trained networks were then used to predict bandgaps of systems with various configurations.For 4×4 and 5×5 supercells they accurately predict bandgaps,with a R^(2) of >90% and root-mean-square error of~0.1 eV.The transfer learning was performed by leveraging data generated from small supercells to improve the prediction accuracy for 6×6 supercells.This work will pave a route to future investigation of configurationally hybridized graphene and other 2D materials.Moreover,given the ubiquitous existence of configurations in materials,this work may stimulate interest in applying deep learning algorithms for the configurational design of materials across different length scales.Yuan Dong Chuhan Wu Chi Zhang Yingda Liu Jianlin Cheng Jian Lin 2019npj Computational Materials2019,,1:5
19Exposure Effects of Terahertz Waves on Primary Neurons and Neuron-like Cells Under Nonthermal Conditions显示文摘Objective This study aimed to explore the potential effects of terahertz(THz) waves on primary cultured neurons from 4 rat brain regions(hippocampus, cerebral cortex, cerebellum, and brainstem)and 3 kinds of neuron-like cells(MN9 D, PC12, and HT22 cells) under nonthermal conditions.Methods THz waves with an output power of 50(0.16 THz) and 10(0.17 THz) m W with exposure times of 6 and 60 min were used in this study. Analysis of temperature change, neurite growth, cell membrane roughness, micromorphology, neurotransmitters and synaptic-related proteins(SYN and PSD95) was used to evaluate the potential effects.Results Temperature increase caused by the THz wave was negligible. THz waves induced significant neurotransmitter changes in primary hippocampal, cerebellar, and brainstem neurons and in MN9 D and PC12 cells. THz wave downregulated SYN expression in primary hippocampal neurons and downregulated PSD95 expression in primary cortical neurons.Conclusion Different types of cells responded differently after THz wave exposure, and primary hippocampal and cortical neurons and MN9 D cells were relatively sensitive to the THz waves.
