A proposal for the theoretical analysis of the interactive coupled effects between urbanization and the eco-environment in mega-urban agglomerations显示文摘Mega-urban agglomerations are strategic core areas for national economic development and the main regions of new urbanization. They also have important roles in shifting the global economic center of gravity to China. However, the development of mega-urban agglomerations has triggered the interactive coercion between resources and the eco-environment. The interactive coupled effects between urbanization and the eco-environment in mega-urban agglomerations represent frontier and high-priority research topics in the field of Earth system science over the next decade. In this paper, we carried out systematic theoretical analysis of the interactive coupling mechanisms and coercing effects between urbanization and the eco-environment in mega-urban agglomerations. In detail, we analyzed the nonlinear-coupled relationships and the coupling characteristics between natural and human elements in mega-urban agglomerations. We also investigated the interactive coercion intensities between internal and external elements, and the mechanisms and patterns of local couplings and telecouplings in mega-urban agglomeration systems, which are affected by key internal and external control elements. In addition, we proposed the interactive coupling theory on urbanization and the eco-environment in mega-urban agglomerations. Furthermore, we established a spatiotemporal dynamic coupling model with multi-element, multi-scale, multi-scenario, multi-module and multi-agent integrations, which can be used to develop an intelligent decision support system for sustainable development of mega-urban agglomerations. In general, our research may provide theoretical guidance and method support to solve problems related to mega-urban agglomerations and maintain their sustainable development. | FANG Chuanglin ZHOU Chenghu GU Chaolin CHEN Liding LI Shuangcheng | 2017 | Journal of Geographical Sciences2017,27,12: | 36

Urbanization: positive and negative effects显示文摘Urbanization is a sign of modernization, and both developed and developing countries attach great importance to this issue. It is also a process in which the population continues to flow in urban areas, the non-agricultural industries(manufacturing and seivice industries)concentrate and develop, and the structure of human society gradually transforms.Urbanization drives economic development.changes the urban form, and in fluences production technologies, citizen lifestyles, and societal values. However, urbanization can have negative impacts on social equity, public health, and the natural environment.Leveraging the positive effects of urbanization while mitigating the negative effects is necessary for sustaining urban progress and improving human settlements.Otherwise, the'urban disease'and regional inequalities caused by urbanization will become increasingly severe, especially in rapidly urbanizing countries. | Chaolin Gu | 2019 | Science Bulletin2019,64,5: | 17
Chinese urbanization 2050: SD modeling and process simulation显示文摘Is Chinese urbanization going to take a long time, or can its development goal be achieved by the government in a short time? What is the highest stable urbanization level that China can reach? When can China complete its urbanization? To answer these questions, this paper presents a system dynamic(SD) model of Chinese urbanization, and its validity and simulation are justified by a stock-flow test and a sensitivity analysis using real data from 1998 to 2013. Setting the initial conditions of the simulation by referring to the real data of 2013, the multi-scenario analysis from 2013 to 2050 reveals that Chinese urbanization will reach a level higher than 70% in 2035 and then proceed to a slow urbanization stage regardless of the population policy and GDP growth rate settings; in 2050, Chinese urbanization levels will reach approximately 75%, which is a stable and equilibrium level for China. Thus, it can be argued that Chinese urbanization is a long social development process that will require approximately20 years to complete and that the ultimate urbanization level will be 75–80%, which means that in the distant future, 20–25% of China's population will still settle in rural regions of China. | GU ChaoLin GUAN WeiHua LIU HeLin | 2017 | Science China Earth Sciences2017,60,6: | 16
China's Urbanization in 1949–2015: Processes and Driving Forces显示文摘The pace and scale of China's contemporary urbanization are stunning. This paper reviews process and the underlying driving forces of China's urbanization between 1949–2015. Contemporary China's urbanization has experienced four stages, and each has had different driving forces: 1) economic re-construction and industrialization-led urbanization(1949–1977); 2) economic reform and market-led urbanization(1978–1995); 3) economic globalization and the global-local urbanization(1996–2010); and 4) the land-economyled urbanization(2010–). These urbanization processes and driving forces will undoubtedly provide scientific reference and have significant implications for developing countries, especially African countries, to formulate their urbanization public policies. | GU Chaolin HU Lingqian Ian G.COOK | 2017 | Chinese Geographical Science2017,27,6: | 15
Urbanization: Processes and driving forces显示文摘Urbanization is becoming the most important human social change in the world, especially in developing countries. However, what is the process of urbanization? What forces are driving the urbanization process? This paper summarizes five main processes of urbanization through various aspects of urbanization in different countries, including economic growth and development, demographic change, social transformation, reshaped and stretched urban spaces, and shrinking cities. Based on the comprehensive method of analyzing urbanization, this paper sorts out five driving forces of urbanization, which are industrialization, modernization, globalization, marketization and administrative/institutional power. The author tries to contribute to the healthy development of urbanization in developing countries through the analysis of process and driving force in urbanization. | Chaolin GU | 2019 | Science China Earth Sciences2019,62,9: | 10
NbN superconducting nanowire single photon detector with efficiency over 90% at 1550 nm wavelength operational at compact cryocooler temperature显示文摘The rapid development of superconducting nanowire single-photon detectors over the past decade has led to numerous advances in quantum information technology. The record for the best system detection efficiency at an incident photon wavelength of 1550 nm is 93%. This performance was attained from a superconducting nanowire single-photon detector made of amorphous WSi; such detectors are usually operated at sub-Kelvin temperatures. In this study, we first demonstrate superconducting nanowire single-photon detectors made of polycrystalline NbN with system detection efficiency of 90.2% for 1550-nm-wavelength photons at2.1 K, accessible with a compact cryocooler. The system detection efficiency saturated at 92.1% when the temperature was lowered to 1.8 K. We expect the results lighten the practical and high performance superconducting nanowire single-photon detectors to quantum information and other high-end applications. | WeiJun Zhang LiXing You Hao Li Jia Huang ChaoLin Lv Lu Zhang XiaoYu Liu JunJie Wu Zhen Wang XiaoMing Xie | 2017 | Science China(Physics,Mechanics & Astronomy)2017,60,12: | 9
Numerical simulation of topography effects on the “00.7” severe rainfall in Beijing显示文摘In an effort to study the severe rainfall event of 4—5th July 2000 in Beijing (with 24h accumulated precipitation of 240 mm), we perform numerical simulations to investigate this event using the MM5v3.6 model. The model is initialized with the MM5/WRF 3DVAR analysis, which incorporates the ground-based GPS precipitable water vapor, automatic and conventional meteorological observations in its assimilation step. For 24 h accumulated precipitation forecast, the threat scores are 0.72, 0.76, 0.67 and 0.63, for thresholds of 1, 5, 10, and 20 mm, respectively. Holding other factors unchanged, sensitivity experiments were conducted with different topographic resolutions of 110, 50 and 3.7 km to investigate the topographic effects on precipitation over the Beijing area. In these sensitivity experiments, we attempt to preserve the realistic orographic distribution in the model topography under the condition of keeping the dynamic-thermodynamic consistency of the initial model atmosphere to the extent possible. Results indicate that the unique topographic distribution and variations in the Beijing area play an important role in determining the location, distribution and intensity of heavy precipitation. | ZHANG Chaolin JI Chongping KUO Yinghwa FAN Shuiyong XUAN Chunyi CHEN Min | 2005 | Progress in Natural Science:Materials International2005,15,9: | 8
Towards high-performance lithium metal anodes via the modification of solid electrolyte interphases显示文摘Li metal has been regarded as one of the most promising anodes for high-energy-density storage systems due to its high theoretical capacity and lowest electrochemical potential.Unfortunately,an unstable and non-uniform solid electrolyte interphase(SEI)deriving from the spontaneous reaction between Li metal anode and electrolyte causes uneven Li deposition, resulting in the growth of Li dendrites and low Coulombic efficiency, which have greatly hindered the practical application of Li metal batteries. Thus, the construction of a stable SEI is an effective approach to suppress the growth of Li dendrites and enhance the electrochemical performances of Li metal anode. In this review,we firstly introduce the formation process of inferior SEI of Li metal anode and the corresponding challenges caused by the unstable SEI.Next, recent progresses to modify SEI layer through the regulation of electrolyte compositions and exsitu protective coating are summarized. Finally, the remained issues, challenges, and perspectives are also proposed on the basis of current research status and progress. | Zhen Hou Jiaolong Zhang Wenhui Wang Qianwen Chen Baohua Li Chaolin Li | 2020 | Journal of Energy Chemistry2020,29,6: | 8
Regression analysis of major parameters affecting the intensity of coal and gas outbursts in laboratory显示文摘Estimating the intensity of outbursts of coal and gas is important as the intensity and frequency of outbursts of coal and gas tend to increase in deep mining. Fully understanding the major factors contributing to coal and gas outbursts is significant in the evaluation of the intensity of the outburst. In this paper, we discuss the correlation between these major factors and the intensity of the outburst using Analysis of Variance(ANOVA) and Contingency Table Analysis(CTA). Regression analysis is used to evaluate the impact of these major factors on the intensity of outbursts based on physical experiments. Based on the evaluation, two simple models in terms of multiple linear and nonlinear regression were constructed for the prediction of the intensity of the outburst. The results show that the gas pressure and initial moisture in the coal mass could be the most significant factors compared to the weakest factor-porosity. The P values from Fisher's exact test in CTA are: moisture(0.019), geostress(0.290), porosity(0.650), and gas pressure(0.031). P values from ANOVA are moisture(0.094), geostress(0.077), porosity(0.420), and gas pressure(0.051). Furthermore, the multiple nonlinear regression model(RMSE: 3.870) is more accurate than the linear regression model(RMSE: 4.091). | Geng Jiabo Xu Jiang Nie Wen Peng Shoujian Zhang Chaolin Luo Xiaohang | 2017 | International Journal of Mining Science and Technology2017,27,2: | 7
Micromorphology of landslide soil Case study on the Jibazi landslide in Yunyang in the Three Gorges Region, China显示文摘Landslide is one of natural catastrophes affecting national economy and people’s livelihood There are many reports on the forming mechanism and control of landslide, but the studies on micromorphology of landslide soil are few. There are many potential landslides in the Three Gorges Region in China. In this paper, the micromorphologic features of the Jibazi landslide soil in Yunyang in the Three Gorges Region of the Yangtze River were studied using routine methods, that is, soil micro- morphology, X-ray diffractometer and scanning electron microscope. The main conclusions are as follow: (1) The basic micromorphologic characteristics of the landslide soil are that the fine soil particles are commonly cohesive matrix, finer and lower content o skeleton grains, the microstructures are mainly types of phenocrystal gelatinization, densely chap and fissure structure. As a result, these micromorphologic features affect the discharging of soil water, favor the movement of landslide body and provide an interna basis of materials for the formation of landslide. (2) The concept on the forming material of landslide was proposed, and types of optical beamed clay aggregates Fe-Mn isolates and glassy material were found in landslide-belt soil, which were remarkably differen from the natural soil formation, and had some scientific significance in analyzing the formingmechanism of landslide and distinguishing the landslide-belt soil. (3) Some special micromor- phologic and sub-micromorphologic characteristics, such as fingerprint microstructure, clay beamed bedding microstructure, oppressive microstructure, moulage microstructure and extending hole microstructure, could bring useful micromorphologic evidences for the observation and forecasting of landslide. The results mentioned above will bring helpful micromorphologic evidences for distingui- shing slide soil, analyzing the formation mechanism of landslide, and monitoring and forecasting the occurrence of landslide. | HE Yurong CUI Peng LIAO Chaolin ZHANG Baohua ZHAO Yu | 2006 | Journal of Mountain Science2006,3,2: | 7
Additive manufacturing of steel–copper functionally graded material with ultrahigh bonding strength显示文摘Additive manufacturing enables processing of functionally graded materials(FGMs)with flexible spatial design and high bonding strength.A steel-copper FGM with high interfacial strength was developed using laser powder bed fusion(LPBF).The effect of laser process parameters on interfacial defects was evaluated by X-ray tomography, which indicates a low porosity level of 0.042%therein.Gradient/fine dendritic grains in the interface are incited by high cooling rates, which facilitates interface strengthening.Multiple mechanical tests evaluate the bonding reliability of interface;and the fatigue tests further substantiate the ultrahigh bonding strength in FGMs,which is superior to traditional manufacturing methods.Mechanisms of the high interfacial bond strength were also discussed. | Chaolin Tan Youxiang Chew Guijun Bi Di Wang Wenyou Ma Yongqiang Yang Kesong Zhou | 2021 | Journal of Materials Science & Technology2021,,13: | 7
Localization and validation of an urbanized high-resolution land data assimilation system(u-HRLDAS)显示文摘This paper uses an urbanized high-resolution land data assimilation system(u-HRLDAS) to parameterize the urban land surface characteristics. The u-HRLDAS model is localized and developed in order to satisfy the need of the weather forecast in Beijing,China. The remote sensing data used to localize and drive u-HRLDAS include the soil type data and MODIS retrieved leaf area index(LAI) data. The evaporation and water depth for impervious surface in urban area are developed to improve the simulation of u-HRLDAS.The result of the urban weather forecast is used for the comparison based on the rapid update cycle system at Beijing Meteorological Bureau(BJ-RUC) without coupled with u-HRLDAS.The land surface temperature, land surface fluxes, and first layer soil moisture in several single sites and urban Beijing region by BJ-RUC are compared with u-HRLDAS after localization and development. The off-line simulation results indicate that compared with BJ-RUC,after the localization and development,u-HRLDAS can improve the simulation of land surface parameters and fluxes definitely. | MENG ChunLei ZHANG ChaoLin MIAO ShiGuang CHEN Fei | 2013 | Science China Earth Sciences2013,56,6: | 4

CHALLENGES AND CORRESPONDING POLICIES FOR CHINA'S URBAN SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT显示文摘Since the late 1970s, China’S economy has been growing very fast with an average rate of over 8 percent annually. Urbanization has become the indicator of economic and secial deveopment in China. Rapid growth of oromy in China pushed the process of urbanization. Since 1978, China’s urban non-agricultural population has grown from under 113.4 million in 1977 to 176.09 million in 1993. The number of cities increased from 188 to 617 in 1994. With urban economic activities making up an increasing share of GDP, preductivity of urban economy will heavily influence economic growth. In eastern coastal area, because economy of larger scale and agglomeration has been made more productive, the forces contributing to urban growth bome stronger. The number of cities has increased from 78 to 247 since 1980. Urban population was over 90 million. The urbanization level reached 31.5 peed. Four megalopolises have been emerged, they are : the Shanghai -Nanjing-Hangzhou region, the Pearl River Delta region, the Beijing-Tianjin- Tangshan region and the Shenyang-Dalian region. According to statistics, the area of these four regions occupies about 2.6 perat of China’s total territory, but their GDP has exceeded 35 percent of the country’s total. However, the rapid urbanization also resulted in a series of problems on deveopment and environment. | Gu Chaolin(Institute of Geography, CAS, Beijing 100101People’s Republic of China) | 1996 | Journal of Geographical Sciences1996,6,1: | 3
