| 1 | Using the polymerase chain reaction coupled with denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis to investigate the association between bacterial translocation and systemic inflammatory response syndrome in predicted acute severe pancreatitis显示文摘AIM: To investigate the use of PCR and DGGE to investigate the association between bacterial translocation and systemic inflammatory response syndrome in predicted severe AP.METHODS: Patients with biochemical and clinical evidence of acute pancreatitis and an APACHE Ⅱ score ≥8 were enrolled. PCR and DGGE were employed to detect bacterial translocation in blood samples collected on d1,3, and 8 after the admission. Standard microbial blood cultures were taken when there was clinical evidence of sepsis or when felt to be clinically indicated by the supervising team.RESULTS: Six patients were included. Of all the patients investigated, only one developed septic complications;the others had uneventful illness. Bacteria were detected using PCR in 4 of the 17 collected blood samples. The patient with sepsis was PCR-positive in two samples (taken on d 1 and 3), despite three negative blood cultures. Using DGGE and specific primers, the bacteria in all blood specimens which tested positive for the presence of bacterial DNA were identified as E coli.CONCLUSION: Our study confirmed thatunlike traditional microbiological techniques, PCR can detect the presence of bacteria in the blood of patients with severe AP. Therefore, this latter method in conjunction with DGGE is potentially an extremely useful tool in predicting septic morbidity and evaluating patients with the disease. | 3 | All-silicon carrier accumulation modulator based on a lateral metal-oxide-semiconductor capacitor显示文摘In silicon photonics, the carrier depletion scheme has been the most commonly used mechanism for demonstrating high-speed electro-optic modulation. However, in terms of phase modulation efficiency, carrieraccumulation-based devices potentially offer almost an order of magnitude improvement over those based on carrier depletion. Previously reported accumulation modulator designs only considered vertical metal-oxidesemiconductor(MOS) capacitors, which imposes serious restrictions on the design flexibility and integratability with other photonic components. In this work, for the first time to our knowledge, we report experimental demonstration of an all-silicon accumulation phase modulator based on a lateral MOS capacitor. | 4 | Ge-on-Si modulators operating at mid-infrared wavelengths up to 8 μm显示文摘We report mid-infrared Ge-on-Si waveguide-based PIN diode modulators operating at wavelengths of 3.8 and8 μm. Fabricated 1-mm-long electro-absorption devices exhibit a modulation depth of >35 dB with a 7 V forward bias at 3.8 μm, and a similar 1-mm-long Mach–Zehnder modulator has a Vπ· L of 0.47 V · cm. Driven by a 2.5 Vpp RF signal, 60 MHz on-off keying modulation was demonstrated. | 5 | Magnetic and superconducting phase diagrams and transition temperatures predicted using text mining and machine learning显示文摘Predicting the properties of materials prior to their synthesis is of great importance in materials science.Magnetic and superconducting materials exhibit a number of unique properties that make them useful in a wide variety of applications,including solid oxide fuel cells,solid-state refrigerants,photon detectors and metrology devices.In all these applications,phase transitions play an important role in determining the feasibility of the materials in question.Here,we present a pipeline for fully integrating data extracted from the scientific literature into machine-learning tools for property prediction and materials discovery.Using advanced natural language processing(NLP)and machine-learning techniques,we successfully reconstruct the phase diagrams of well-known magnetic and superconducting compounds,and demonstrate that it is possible to predict the phase-transition temperatures of compounds not present in the database.We provide the tool as an online open-source platform,forming the basis for further research into magnetic and superconducting materials discovery for potential device applications. | Callum J.Court Jacqueline M.Cole | 2020 | npj Computational Materials2020,,1: | 4 |

| 7 | Pathways of flower infection and pollen-mediated dispersion of Pseudomonas syringae pv. actinidiae, the causal agent of kiwifruit bacterial canker显示文摘Flowers can provide a protected and nutrient-rich environment to the epiphytic microflora,thus representing a sensible entry point for pathogens such as Pseudomonas syringae pv.actinidiae(Psa).This bacterium can colonize both male and female Actinidia flowers,causing flower browning and fall,and systemic invasion of the host plant,eventually leading to its death.However,the process of flower colonization and penetration into the host tissues has not yet been fully elucidated.In addition,the presence of Psa in the pollen from infected flowers,and the role of pollination in the spread of Psa requires confirmation.The present study employed a Psa strain constitutively expressing the fluorescent GFPuv protein,to visualize in vivo flower colonization.Microscopy observations were performed by means of confocal laser scanning and wide-field fluorescent microscopy,and were coupled with the study of Psa population dynamics by quantitative PCR(q-PCR).The pathogen was shown to colonize stigmata,move along the stylar furrow,and penetrate the receptacles via the style or nectarhodes.Once the receptacle was invaded,the pathogen migrated along the flower pedicel and became systemic.Psa was also able to colonize the anthers epiphytically and endophytically.Infected male flowers produced contaminated pollen,which could transmit Psa to healthy plants.Finally,pollinators(Apis mellifera and Bombus terrestris)were studied in natural conditions,showing that,although they can be contaminated with Psa,the pathogen’s transmission via pollinators is contrasted by its short survival in the hive. | Irene Donati Antonio Cellini Giampaolo Buriani Sofia Mauri Callum Kay Gianni Tacconi Francesco Spinelli | 2018 | Horticulture Research2018,5,1: | 3 |

| 11 | A review of phosphorus nutrition in irrigated cotton farming systems of Australia显示文摘Australian cotton production predominantly occurs on Vertisols.The average lint yield of cotton grown in Australia is 2260–2700 kg·hm^(−2),which is 2.5 to 3 times the world average.This high productivity per unit of land area requires efficient use of resources such as water and nutrients.However,high yields accelerate the export of nutrients such as phosphorus(P)in seed,depleting the soil reserves of P more than in other countries with lower cotton yields.Recent surveys of cotton industry indicate that P application rates should match seed P export(30~40 kg·hm−2),but historical depletion within subsoil is still evident and is continuing.Depletion of soil P is typically more pronounced in the subsoil than in the topsoil(0~20 cm)where P fertiliser is applied,as cotton roots rely on these layers as important sources of plant available water and available P.This mismatch between zones of P uptake and resupply may increase stratification of available P in the soil profile.Recent studies showed that cotton responded poorly to banded applications of fertiliser P,while dispersal of fertiliser throughout the plant beds was more successful.Researchers have also observed sporadic cotton responses to applied P fertiliser in soils where available P concentrations were well above the previously determined critical concentrations indicative of fertiliser P responses in Australia.To sustain highyielding cotton production in Australia,a greater understanding of cotton root acquisition of applied P,as well as a re-examination of critical soil P concentrations for each production region are required. | NACHIMUTHU Gunasekhar SCHWENKE Graeme MERCER Clarence BISCHOF Callum HULME Pat BELL Michael | 2022 | Journal of Cotton Research2022,5,1: | 2 |
