| 1 | A method to estimate concentrations of surface-level particulate matter using satellite-based aerosol optical thickness显示文摘We propose a new method to estimate surface-level particulate matter(PM)concentrations by using satellite-retrieved Aerosol Optical Thickness(AOT).This method considers the distribution and variation of Planetary Boundary Layer(PBL)height and relative humidity(RH)at the regional scale.The method estimates surface-level particulate matter concentrations using the data simulated by an atmospheric boundary layer model RAMS and satellite-retrieved AOT.By incorporation MODIS AOT,PBL height and RH simulated by RAMS,this method is applied to estimate the surface-level PM 2.5 concentrations in North China region.The result is evaluated by using 16 ground-based observations deployed in the research region,and the result shows a good agreement between estimated PM 2.5 concentrations and observations,and the coefficient of determination R2 is 0.61 between the estimated PM 2.5 concentrations and the observations.In addition,surface-level PM 2.5 concentrations are also estimated by using MODIS AOT,ground-based LIDAR observations and RH measurements.A comparison between the two estimated PM 2.5 concentrations shows that the new method proposed in this paper is better than the traditional method.The coefficient of determination R2 is improved from 0.32 to 0.62. | TAO JinHua ZHANG MeiGen CHEN LiangFu WANG ZiFeng SU Lin GE Cui HAN Xiao ZOU MingMin | 2013 | Science China Earth Sciences2013,56,8: | 20 |
| 2 | The concept of effective emissivity of nonisothermal mixed pixel and its test显示文摘Based on two preconditions, the local thermal equilibrium is satisfied and emissivities donot change with temperature, the concept of component effective emissivity of nonisothermal mixed pixel has been put forward and then the radiant directionality model of nonisothermal mixed pixel constructed from it. Our study shows that the component effective emissivity is associated with geometric structure, optical properties of target, and viewing angle, but does not depend on the component temepratures. The component temperatures can only change the ratio of component radiance to the total radiance of the mixed-pixel. The total effective emissivity of this pixel is the complement of its directional-hemisphere reflectance. | 5 | A bi-directional gap model for simulating the directional thermal radiance of row crops显示文摘Row crops are a kind of typical vegetation canopy between discrete canopy and continuous canopy. Kimes et al. studied the directional thermal radiation of row crops using the geometrical optical model, which simplified row structure as 'box' and neglected the gap among foliage and did not consider the emissivity effects. In this work we take account of the gaps along illumination and viewing directions and propose a bi-direction gap model on the basis of the idea of gap probability of discrete vegetation canopy introduced by 'Li-Strahler' and inter-correlation of continuous vegetation developed by Kuusk. It can be used to explain 'hot spot' effects in thermal infrared region. | 6 | Retrieval of aerosol optical depth over bright targets in the urban areas of North China during winter显示文摘Two factors that affect satellite retrieval of Aerosol Optical Depth(AOD) are aerosol model assumptions and the separation of surface reflectance.NASA/MODIS Dense Dark Vegetation(DDV) algorithm has been proven valuable in deriving aerosol distribution and properties over land;however,it cannot be applied to bright targets.As a supplement to the DDV algorithm,an algorithm to retrieve AOD over urban areas in North China in winter is developed using MODIS data,including(1) the generation and analysis of adjacent clear-days surface reflectance using MOD09 product from 2007 to 2008,and(2) seasonal aerosol models derived from AERONET data in Beijing and Xianghe sites.Ground-based measurements using sun photometers were used to validate the retrieved AOD,and the correlation coefficient(r) is up to 0.931.Especially for high AOD values(AOD>0.4),more retrievals meet the inversion accuracy.The temporal variations of retrieval errors over urban,rural and mountain regions were examined,and the results indicated that the variation of blue-band surface reflectance is less than 0.02 in a short period except for unusual weather conditions,the retrieval bias is under 0.08,and the relative error decreases as the AOD increases. | LI ShenShen CHEN LiangFu TAO JinHua HAN Dong WANG ZhongTing SU Lin FAN Meng YU Chao | 2012 | Science China Earth Sciences2012,55,9: | 11 |
| 7 | Optimization and test for structural parameters of UAV spraying rotary cup atomizer显示文摘Small unmanned aerial vehicle(UAV)pesticide application technology is developing rapidly in China.However,the spray efficiency of UAV sprayer is not stable,one important reason is that the lack of specialized aviation nozzle.Rotary cup atomizer is not easily to be blocked and has broad application foreground in UAV spray.In order to obtain good spraying quality and narrow droplet spectrum aviation spraying centrifugal nozzle,the impacts of rotary cup atomizer structural parameters on atomization property were studied.In this research,a centrifugal atomization test device was designed,on which a frequency converter was used to adjust the rotary speed,and a return valve was used to stabilize the flow rate and pressure of spray liquid.The droplet volume medium diameter(VMD)and droplet spectrum relative width(SRW)were tested by using laser particle analyzer and particle analysis system.The analysis results of variance and quadratic regression orthogonal test were used to optimize the structural parameters of rotary cup atomizer.The influences of rotary cup atomizer structural parameters on atomization property,such as groove shape,diameter,teeth number,cone angle and height were evaluated and analyzed by conducting single-factor test.The results showed that:the best optimized rotary groove shape was square,diameter and teeth number had significant effects on droplet VMD and SRW,while cone angle had no effect on the droplet VMD and SRW,height affected droplet VMDbut did not affect droplet SRW.Therefore,diameter and teeth number were selected as the variables of quadratic regression orthogonal test,droplet VMD and SRW regression model was established by using response surface analysis method.The optimized structural parameters respectively were:groove shape square,cone angle 60°,height 20 mm,diameter 61.5 mm and teeth number 149.Droplet VMD and SRW simulation value respectively were 200μm and 0.562.The differences between simulation value and test value were 0.68%and 9.90%respectively,indicating that the regression model is accurate.The research result can provide a reference for further optimizing the structure parameters of rotary cup atomizer to meet the requirement of UAV spraying. | Zhou Qingqing Xue Xinyu Qin Weicai Cai Chen Zhou Liangfu | 2017 | International Journal of Agricultural and Biological Engineering2017,10,3: | 10 |

| 9 | Forest NPP estimation based on MODIS data under cloudless condition显示文摘Based on light-use efficiency model, an MODIS-derived daily net primary production (NPP) model was developed. In this model, a new model for the fraction of photosynthetically active radiation absorbed by vegetation (FPAR) is developed based on leaf area index (LAI) and albedo parameters, and a pho- tosynthetically active radiation (PAR) is calculated from the combination of Bird's model with aerosol optical thickness and water vapor derived from cloud free MODIS images. These two models are inte- grated into our predicted NPP model, whose most parameters are retrieved from MODIS data. In order to validate our NPP model, the observed NPP in the Qianyanzhou station and the Changbai Mountains station are used to compare with our predicted NPP, showing that they are in good agreement. | 10 | Clinicopathological analysis of metaplastic meningioma: report of 15 cases in Huashan Hospital显示文摘Objective: Metaplastic meningioma is a rare subtype of benign meningiomas, classified as WHO grade I with well prognosis. Here we presented our experiences on 15 cases of metaplastic meningioma, to investigate the clinicopathological features, therapies and prognosis of these cases. Methods: 15 patients underwent surgical treatment for intracranial metaplastic meningioma between 2001 and 2010 at Neurosurgery Department of Huashan Hospital, Shanghai, China. The clinical data, radiological manifestation, treatment strategy, pathological findings and prognosis of all patients were analyzed retrospectively. Results: Among the 15 cases (10 males and 5 females), the age ranged from 22 to 74 years old (the mean age was 50.67-year old). The clinical manifestations include headache, dizziness, seizure attack, vision decrease, and weakness of bilateral lower limbs. All the patients received surgical treatment, combined with radiotherapy in some cases. In the follow-up period, recurrence occurred in 2 cases, of which 1 patient died of other system complications. Conclusions: Metaplastic meningiomas are characterized by focal or widespread mesenchymal differentiation with formation of bone, cartilage, fat, and xanthomatous tissue elements. Surgical removal is the optimal therapy, and the overall prognosis is well. | 11 | A convolution algorithm to calculate differential cross sections of the Ring effect in the Earth's atmosphere based on rotational Raman scattering显示文摘The Ring effect refers to the filling in of Fraunhofer lines, which is mainly attributed to the rotational Raman scattering of solar spectra by N2 and O2 molecules in the atmosphere. The Ring effect is one of the most significant factors affecting the accuracy of retrieving concentrations of atmospheric trace gases, such as NO2 and SO2, from satellite observations through differential optical absorption spectroscopy. First in this study, the solar spectrum measured by the Ozone Monitoring Instrument onboard NASA Aura is convolved with the rotational Raman cross section of the atmosphere, which is calculated from the rotational Raman cross sections of N2 and O2 molecules, and divided by the original solar spectrum. The slowly varying term is removed by fitting it with a cubic polynomial to obtain the differential Ring spectrum. The results agree well with the calculations using a radiative transfer model (R2=0.9663). Second, the differential Ring spectrum is computed using two fixed wavelengths of 410 nm and 488 nm, and the resulting differential Ring spectra are similar to that calculated with varying wavelengths and agree well with the calculation using the radiative transfer model (R2=0.9624 and 0.9639 respectively). The computation time using the fixed wavelength is about 0.128% of that using a varying wavelength. | 12 | Application of CUSA Excel ultrasonic aspiration system in resection of skull base meningiomas显示文摘Background: Effective methods for managing patients with solitary pulmonary nodules(SPNs) depend critically on the predictive probability of malignancy.Methods: Between July 2009 and June 2011, data on gender, age, cancer history, tumor familial history, smoking status, tumor location, nodule size, spiculation, calcification, the tumor border, and the final pathological diagnosis were collected retrospectively from 154 surgical patients with an SPN measuring 3-30 mm. Each final diagnosis was compared with the probability calculated by three predicted models—the Mayo, VA, and Peking University(PU) models. The accuracy of each model was assessed using area under the receiver operating characteristics(ROC) and calibration curves.Results: The area under the ROC curve of the PU model [0.800; 95% confidence interval(CI): 0.708-0.891] was higher than that of the Mayo model(0.753; 95% CI: 0.650-0.857) or VA model(0.728; 95% CI: 0.623-0.833); however, this finding was not statistically significant. To varying degrees, calibration curves showed that all three models overestimated malignancy.Conclusions: The three predicted models have similar accuracy for prediction of SPN malignancy, although the accuracy is not sufficient. For Chinese patients, the PU model may has greater predictive power.Background: Here, we introduced our short experience on the application of a new CUSA Excel ultrasonic aspiration system, which was provided by Integra Lifesciences corporation, in skull base meningiomas resection.Methods: Ten patients with anterior, middle skull base and sphenoid ridge meningioma were operated using the CUSA Excel ultrasonic aspiration system at the Neurosurgery Department of Shanghai Huashan Hospital from August 2014 to October 2014. There were six male and four female patients, aged from 38 to 61 years old(the mean age was 48.5 years old). Five cases with tumor located at anterior skull base, three cases with tumor on middle skull base, and two cases with tumor on sphenoid ridge.Results: All the patents received total resection of meningiomas with the help of this new tool, and the critical brain vessels and nerves were preserved during operations. All the patients recovered well after operation.Conclusions: This new CUSA Excel ultrasonic aspiration system has the advantage of preserving vital brain arteries and cranial nerves during skull base meningioma resection, which is very important for skull base tumor operations. This key step would ensure a well prognosis for patients. We hope the neurosurgeons would benefit from this kind of technique.Background: The purposes of this study were to explore the effects of high mobility group protein box 1(HMGB1) gene on the growth, proliferation, apoptosis, invasion, and metastasis of glioma cells, with an attempt to provide potential therapeutic targets for the treatment of glioma. Methods: The expressions of HMGB1 in glioma cells(U251, U-87 MG and LN-18) and one control cell line(SVG p12) were detected by real time PCR and Western blotting, respectively. Then, the effects of HMGB1 on the biological behaviors of glioma cells were detected: the expression of HMGB1 in human glioma cell lines U251 and U-87 MG were suppressed using RNAi technique, then the influences of HMGB1 on the viability, cycle, apoptosis, and invasion abilities of U251 and U-87 MG cells were analyzed using in a Transwell invasion chamber. Also, the effects of HMGB1 on the expressions of cyclin D1, Bax, Bcl-2, and MMP 9 were detected. Results: As shown by real-time PCR and Western blotting, the expression of HMGB1 significantly increased in glioma cells(U251, U-87 MG, and LN-18) in comparison with the control cell line(SVG p12); the vitality, proliferation and invasive capabilities of U251 and U-87 MG cells in the HMGB1 siR NA-transfected group were significantly lower than those in the blank control group and negative control(NC) siR NA group(P<0.05) but showed no significant difference between the blank control group and NC siR NA group. The percentage of apoptotic U251 and U-87 MG cells was significantly higher in the HMGB1 siR NA-transfected group than in the blank control group and NC siR NA group(P<0.05) but was similar between the latter two groups. The HMGB1 siR NA-transfected group had significantly lower expression levels of Cyclin D1, Bcl-2, and MMP-9 protein in U251 and U-87 MG cells and significantly higher expression of Bax protein than in the blank control group and NC siR NA group(P<0.05); the expression profiles of cyclin D1, Bax, Bcl-2, and MMP 9 showed no significant change in both blank control group and NC siR NA group. Conclusions: HMGB1 gene may promote the proliferation and migration of glioma cells and suppress its effects of apoptosis. Inhibition of the expression of HMGB1 gene can suppress the proliferation and migration of glioma cells and promote their apoptosis. | 13 | Intraoperative ultrasound assistance in resection of intracranial meningiomas显示文摘Objective: Intracranial meningiomas, especially those located at anterior and middle skull base, are difficult to be completely resected due to their complicated anatomy structures and adjacent vessels. It's essential to locate the tumor and its vessels precisely during operation to reduce the risk of neurological deficits. The purpose of this study was to evaluate intraoperative ultrasonography in displaying intracranial meningioma and its surrounding arteries, and evaluate its potential to improve surgical precision and minimize surgical trauma. Methods: Between December 2011 and January 2013, 20 patients with anterior and middle skull base meningioma underwent surgery with the assistance of intraoperative ultrasonography in the Neurosurgery Department of Shanghai Huashan Hospital. There were 7 male and 13 female patients, aged from 31 to 66 years old. Their sonographic features were analyzed and the advantages of intraoperative ultrasonography were discussed. Results: The border of the meningioma and its adjacent vessels could be exhibited on intraoperative ultrasonography. The sonographic visualization allowed the neurosurgeon to choose an appropriate approach before the operation. In addition, intraoperative ultrasonography could inform neurosurgeons about the location of the tumor, its relation to the surrounding arteries during the operation, thus these essential arteries could be protected carefully. Conclusions: Intraoperative ultrasonography is a useful intraoperative technique. | 16 | Validation and Spatiotemporal Distribution of GEOS-5-Based Planetary Boundary Layer Height and Relative Humidity in China显示文摘Few studies have specifically focused on the validation and spatiotemporal distribution of planetary boundary layer height(PBLH) and relative humidity(RH) data in China. In this analysis, continuous PBLH and surface-level RH data simulated from GEOS-5 between 2004 and 2012, were validated against ground-based observations. Overall, the simulated RH was consistent with the statistical data from meteorological stations, with a correlation coefficient of 0.78 and a slope of 0.9. However, the simulated PBLH was underestimated compared to LIDAR data by a factor of approximately two,which was primarily because of poor simulation in late summer and early autumn. We further examined the spatiotemporal distribution characteristics of two factors in four regions—North China, South China, Northwest China, and the Tibetan Plateau. The results showed that the annual PBLH trends in all regions were fairly moderate but sensitive to solar radiation and precipitation, which explains why the PBLH values were ranked in order from largest to smallest as follows: Tibetan Plateau, Northwest China, North China, and South China. Strong seasonal variation of the PBLH exhibited high values in summer and low values in winter, which was also consistent with the turbulent vertical exchange. Not surprisingly, the highest RH in South China and the lowest RH in desert areas of Northwest China(less than 30%). Using simulated observations in the O2-A band, we examined the utility of the PPDF-based method to account for the aerosol scattering effect. First, observations were simulated using a forward model under different aerosol conditions; PPDF factors were then retrieved using an optimal estimation method; PPDF factors were used to reconstruct the observations; and finally, simulated true observations and reconstructions were compared. Analysis of the difference between the true observations and reconstructions confirmed the utility of the PPDF-based method. | 18 | A data assimilation-based method for optimizing parameterization schemes in a land surface process model显示文摘Optimizing the parameters of a land surface process model(LSPM) through data assimilation(DA) can not only improve and perfect the parameterization schemes in the LSPM through the physical mechanism, but also increase its regional adaptability and simulation capability. This has practical importance for improving simulation results and the climate-prediction capability of general circulation models(GCMs) and regional climate models(RCMs). This paper presents a DA-based method for optimizing the parameterization schemes in LSPMs. We optimize the unsaturated-soil water flow(Un SWF) model as an example by developing a soil-moisture assimilation scheme based on the Un SWF model and the extended Kalman filter(EKF) algorithm, and then combining them with the Variable Infiltration Capacity(VIC) model. Using a month as the assimilation window, we used the Shuffled Complex Evolution–University of Arizona(SCE-UA) algorithm to minimize the objective function through simulated and assimilated soil moisture, achieved the best fit with the given objective function measurement, and optimized the parameters of the Un SWF model, including the saturated-soil hydraulic conductivity, moisture content, matrix potential, and the Clapp and Hornberger constant. The optimal values of the model parameters were obtained during the DA period(the year 1986), and then the optimized parameters were used to improve the Un SWF model. Finally, numerical simulation experiments were carried out from 1986 to 1993 to evaluate the simulation capability of the improved model and to explore and realize the DA-based method for optimizing the soil water parameterization scheme in LSPMs. The experimental results indicated that the optimized model parameters improved and perfected the model based on the physical mechanism, and increased its simulation capability; the optimized model parameters had good temporal portability and their adaptability was stronger, achieving the aim of improving the model. Therefore, this method is reasonable and feasible.
