| 1 | Environmental risk factors for inflammatory bowel diseases: Evidence based literature review显示文摘AIM: To advances in genetics and immunology have contributed to the current understanding of the pathogenesis of inflammatory bowel diseases(IBD). METHODS: The current opinion on the pathogenesis of IBD suggests that genetically susceptible individuals develop intolerance to dysregulated gut microflora(dysbiosis) and chronic inflammation develops as a result of environmental insults. Environmental exposures are innumerable with varying effects during the life course of individuals with IBD. Studying the relationship between environmental factors and IBD may provide the missing link to increasing our understanding of the etiology and increased incidence of IBD in recent years with implications for prevention, diagnosis, and treatment. Environmental factors are heterogeneous and genetic predisposition, immune dysregulation, or dysbiosis do not lead to the development of IBD in isolation. RESULTS: Current challenges in the study of environmental factors and IBD are how to effectively translate promising results from experimental studies to humans in order to develop models that incorporate the complex interactions between the environment, genetics, immunology, and gut microbiota, and limited high quality interventional studies assessing the effect of modifying environmental factors on the natural history and patient outcomes in IBD.CONCLUSION: This article critically reviews the current evidence on environmental risk factors for IBD and proposes directions for future research. | Ayokunle T Abegunde Bashir H Muhammad Owais Bhatti Tauseef Ali | 2016 | World Journal of Gastroenterology2016,22,27: | 11 |

| 3 | Estimation of the Shale Oil/Gas Potential of a Paleocene–Eocene Succession: A Case Study from the Meyal Area, Potwar Basin, Pakistan显示文摘The successful exploration and production of shale-gas resources in the United States and Canada sets a new possible solution towards the energy crisis presently affecting most countries of Asia. This study focuses on the use of well log and 2D seismic data for the characterization of the shale oil/gas potential of a Paleocene–Eocene succession — the Meyal area in the Potwar Basin of Pakistan. Two shaly plays are identified in Paleocene–Eocene strata in well logs using ΔLogR and modified ΔLogR cross-plot techniques. The results indicate that Paleocene shale(the Patala Formation) and the lower shaly part of Eocene limestone(Sakesar Formation) can be potentially mature source rocks. However, the thermal maturity modelling proves that only the Paleocene shale is mature. Our results also suggest that the maturity responses on ΔLogR models for the lower shaly part of the Eocene limestone are due to trapped hydrocarbons in the intra-formational fractures. Petroelastic/petrophysical analysis of the Patala Formation reveals two potential shale oil/gas zones on the basis of Young's modulus, Poisson's ratio, Brittleness index and Total Organic Content at an exploitation depth of 3980–3988 m. | 4 | Laboratory scale studies on removal of chromium from industrial wastes显示文摘Chromium being one of the major toxic pollutants is discharged from electroplating and chrome tanning processes and is also found in the effluents of dyes, paint pigments, manufacturing units etc. Chromium exists in aqueous systems in both trivalent (Cr 3+) and hexavalent (Cr 6+) forms. The hexavalent form is carcinogenic and toxic to aquatic life, whereas Cr 3+ is however comparatively less toxic. This study was undertaken to investigate the total chromium removal from industrial effluents by chemical means in order to achieve the Pakistan NEQS level of 1 mg/L by the methods of reduction and precipitation. The study was conducted in four phases. In phase Ⅰ, the optimum pH and cost effective reducing agent among the four popular commercial chemicals was selected. As a result, pH of 2 was found to be most suitable and sodium meta bisulfate was found to be the most cost effective reducing agent respectively. Phase Ⅱ showed that lower dose of sodium meta bisulfate was sufficient to obtain 100 % efficiency in reducing Cr 6+ to Cr 3+, and it was noted that reaction time had no significance in the whole process. A design curve for reduction process was established which can act as a tool for treatment of industrial effluents. Phase Ⅲ studies indicated the best pH was 8.5 for precipitation of Cr 3+ to chromium hydroxide by using lime. An efficiency of 100 % was achievable and a settling time of 30 minutes produced clear effluent. Finally in Phase Ⅳ actual waste samples from chrome tanning and electroplating industries, when precipitated at pH of 12 gave 100 % efficiency at a settling time of 30 minutes and confirmed that chemical means of reduction and precipitation is a feasible and viable solution for treating chromium wastes from industries. | M.A.Baig Mohsin Mir Shazad Murtaza Zafar I. | 7 | Orange dye polyaniline composite based impedance humidity sensors显示文摘This study presents the fabrication and investigation of humidity sensors based on orange dye (OD) and polyaniline (PANI) composite films. A blend of 3 wt.% OD with 1 wt.% PANI was prepared in 1 ml water. The composite films were deposited on glass substrates between pre-deposited silver electrodes. The gap between the electrodes was 45 μm. The sensing mechanism was based on the impedance and capacitance variations due to the absorption/desorption of water vapor. It was observed that with the increase in relative humidity (RH) from 30% to 90%, the impedance decreases by 5.2 × 10 4 and 8.8 × 10 3 times for the frequencies of 120 Hz and 1 kHz, respectively. The impedance-humidity relationship showed a more uniform change compared to the capacitance-humidity relationship in the RH range of 30% to 90%. The consequence of annealing, measuring frequency, response and recovery time, and absorption-desorption behavior of the humidity sensor were also discussed in detail. The annealing resulted in an increase in sensitivity of up to 2.5 times, while the measured response time and recovery time were 34 s and 450 s, respectively. | 10 | Reversible and irreversible adsorption of bare and hybrid silica nanoparticles onto carbonate surface at reservoir condition显示文摘Realistic implementation of nanofluids in subsurface projects including carbon geosequestration and enhanced oil recovery requires full understanding of nanoparticles(NPs)adsorption behaviour in the porous media.The physicochemical interactions between NPs and between the NP and the porous media grain surface control the adsorption behavior of NPs.This study investigates the reversible and irreversible adsorption of silica NPs onto oil-wet and water-wet carbonate surfaces at reservoir conditions.Each carbonate sample was treated with different concentrations of silica nanofluid to investigate NP adsorption in terms of nanoparticles initial size and hydrophobicity at different temperatures,and pressures.Aggregation behaviour and the reversibility of NP adsorption onto carbonate surfaces was measured using dynamic light scattering(DLS),scanning electron microscope(SEM)images,energy dispersive X-ray spectroscope(EDS),and atomic force microscope(AFM)measurement.Results show that the initial hydrophilicity of the NP and the carbonate rock surface can influence the NPs adsorption onto the rock surfaces.Typically,oppositely charged NP and rock surface are attracted to each other,forming a mono or multilayers of NPs on the rock.Operation conditions including pressure and temperature have shown minor influence on nano-treatment efficiency.Moreover,DLS measurement proved the impact of hydrophilicity on the stability and adsorption trend of NPs.This was also confirmed by SEM images.Further,AFM results indicated that a wide-ranging adsorption scenario of NPs on the carbonate surface exists.Similar results were obtained from the EDS measurements.This study thus gives the first insight into NPs adsorption onto carbonate surfaces at reservoirs conditions. | Zain-UL-Abedin Arain Sarmad Al-Anssari Muhammad Ali Shoaib Memon Masood Ahmed Bhatti Christopher Lagat Mohammad Sarmadivaleh | 2020 | Petroleum2020,6,3: | 2 |
| 11 | Development of a laser capture microscope-based single-cell-type proteomics tool for studying proteomes of individual cell layers of plant roots显示文摘Single-cell-type proteomics provides the capability to revealing the genomic and proteomics information at cell-level resolution.However,the methodology for this type of research has not been well-developed.This paper reports developing a workflow of laser capture microdissection(LCM)followed by gel-liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry(GeLC-MS/MS)-based proteomics analysis for the identification of proteomes contained in individual cell layers of tomato roots.Thin-sections(~10-μm thick,10 sections per root tip)were prepared for root tips of tomato germinating seedlings.Epidermal and cortical cells(5000–7000 cells per tissue type)were isolated under a LCM microscope.Proteins were isolated and then separated by SDS–polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis followed by in-gel-tryptic digestion.The MS and MS/MS spectra generated using nanoLC-MS/MS analysis of the tryptic peptides were searched against ITAG2.4 tomato protein database to identify proteins contained in each single-cell-type sample.Based on the biological functions,proteins with proven functions in root hair development were identified in epidermal cells but not in the cortical cells.Several of these proteins were found in Al-treated roots only.The results demonstrated that the cell-type-specific proteome is relevant for tissue-specific functions in tomato roots.Increasing the coverage of proteomes and reducing the inevitable cross-contamination from adjacent cell layers,in both vertical and cross directions when cells are isolated from slides prepared using intact root tips,are the major challenges using the technology in proteomics analysis of plant roots. | Yingde Zhu Hui Li Sarabjit Bhatti Suping Zhou Yong Yang Tara Fish Theodore W Thannhauser | 2016 | Horticulture Research2016,3,1: | 2 |

| 13 | Vasculitis with renal involvement in essential mixed cryoglobulinemia:Case report and mini-review显示文摘The discovery of a strong association between hepatitis C virus(HCV) infection and mixed cryoglobulinemia(MC) has led to an increasingly rare diagnosis of idiopathic essential MC(EMC).The incidence of EMC is high in regions where there is a comparatively low HCV infection burden and low in areas of high infection prevalence,including HCV.The diagnosis of EMC requires an extensive laboratory investigation to exclude all possible causes of cryoglobulin formation.In addition,although cryoglobulin testing is simple,improper testing conditions will result in false negative results.Here,we present a 46-year-old female patient with a case of EMC with dermatological and renal manifestations,highlighting the importance of extensive investigation to reacha proper diagnosis.We review the need for appropriate laboratory testing,which is often neglected in clinical practice and which can result in false negative results.This review also emphasizes the significance of an extended testing repertoire necessary for better patient management.Despite a strong association of MC with HCV infection and other causes that lead to cryoglobulin formation,EMC remains a separate entity.Correct diagnosis requires proper temperature regulation during sample handling,as well as characterization and quantification of the cryoprecipitate.Inclusion of rheumatoid factor activity and complement levels in the cryoglobulin test-panel promotes better patient management and monitoring.Consensus guidelines should be developed and implemented for cryoglobulin detection and the diagnosis of cryoglobulinemic syndrome,which will reduce variability in inter-laboratory reporting. | Sabiha Anis Khawar Abbas Mohammad Mubarak Ejaz Ahmed Sajid Bhatti Rana Muzaffar | 2014 | World Journal of Clinical Cases2014,2,5: | 2 |

We cloned a rice OsLOL2 gene, orthologous to LSD1 of Arabidopsis and expressed it in a tobacco plant. Transgenic tobacco lines displayed enhanced disease resistance to a virulent bacterium Pseudomonas syringae pv. tabaci (Pst). RT-PCR analysis showed that overexpression of OsLOL2 in transgenic tobacco lines resulted in upregulation of two pathogenesis-related (PR) protein genes, PR2 and PR5.
