Clinical and paraclinical profile, and predictors of outcome in 90 cases of scrub typhus, Meghalaya, India显示文摘Background:India is an integral component of“tsutsugamushi triangle”which depicts a part of the globe endemic to scrub typhus.Owing to frequent outbreaks witnessed in different parts of the country in the recent past, scrub typhus is described as a re-emerging infectious disease in India. The present study aimed to study the clinical and paraclinical profile, complications and predictors of outcome among 90 cases of scrub typhus diagnosed in a hospital of north-eastern India from Sept 2011 to Aug 2012.Methods:A longitudinal study was conducted in a hospital of Meghalaya,India between Sept 2011 and Aug 2012.Diagnosis of scrub typhus was arrived by SD BIOLINE tsutsugamushi(solid phase immunochromatographic assay)rapid diagnostic test for antibodies(IgM,IgG or IgA).Descriptive analyses of age, gender, geographic area, symptoms and signs, treatment, laboratory findings, complications, and outcome were conducted.Relative risk(RR)with 95%confidence interval(CI)was computed for Multiple Organ Dysfunction Syndrome(MODS)and mortality.Binary logistic regression was applied to the significant correlates(P<0.05)on univariate analysis to identify the predictors of MODS and mortality in scrub typhus. Results:As many as 662 clinically suspected scrub typhus patients were tested and 90(13.6%)were diagnosed to have scrub typhus.Out of 90 patients,52.2%(n=47)were males and their mean(SD)age was 36.29(13.38)years.Fever of<7 days(n=75,83.3%),myalgia(n=56,62.2%),pain abdomen(n=24,26.7%),headache(n=24,26.7%),nausea/vomiting(n=21,23.3%),dry cough(n=21,23.3%),hepatomegaly(n=24,26.7%),splenomegaly(n=22,24.4%),and lymphadenopathy(n=20,22.2%)were the predominant clinical features.Eschar was seen in 10 patients(11.1%).One third(n=30)of the patients developed at least one systemic complication.Acute hepatitis(n=15,16.7%),pneumonitis(n=14,15.6%),and acute kidney injury(n=11,12.2%)were the common complications.MODS was seen in 14.4%(n=13)and 38.5%(n=5)of the patients with MODS died.Overall, case fatality rate was 5.15%(n=5).On univariate analysis,platelets<100000/mm3,serum creatinine>1.5 mg/dl,and transaminase(AST,ALT or both)>500 U/L were associated with MODS(P<0.001)and mortality(P<0.05).In addition, serum bilirubin>3 mg/dl was also associated with MODS(P<0.001).On applying binary logistic regression, serum creatinine>1.5 mg/dl was a predictor of MODS(OR:76.1,95%CI:4.9–1175.6)and mortality(OR:18.03,95%CI:1.38–235.1).Conclusion:In this study setting, approximately one-seventh(13.6%)of the acute undifferentiated febrile illness were due to scrub typhus.Systemic complications were common(33.3%).Serum creatinine>1.5 mg/dl was a predictor of MODS and mortality.Sunuraj Sivarajan Siddharudha Shivalli Debomallya Bhuyan Michael Mawlong Rittwick Barman 2016Infectious Diseases of Poverty2016,5,1:6
Mathematical Model Development of Raceway Parameters and Their Effects on Corex Process显示文摘Corex is an alternative ironmaking process and raceway is one of the important areas to maintain the stability of the furnace. The raceway parameters are well established for blast furnace operation. But for Corex process,it has not yet been established and optimized. Thus,a mathematical model was developed to determine various raceway parameters such as RAFT (raceway adiabatic flame temperature),tuyere gas velocity and kinetic energy. The model provides an idea about the raceway geometry, zone temperature and kinetic energy accumulated in tuyere gas. Besides, all the raceway parameters have been analyzed to find out their effects on the Corex process. It is found that RAFT influences the gasification reaction kinetics and higher RAFT generates more CO in reduction gas, which improves the metallisation degree of the DRI in shaft. It is also found that increased gas velocity and kinetic energy generate more fines and demand more coke to maintain char bed permeability. High coke rate increases the production cost and lowers the production of hot metal.S C Barman K P Mrunmaya M Ranjan 2011Journal of Iron and Steel Research(International)2011,18,5:4
Fisheries resources of Bangladesh:Present status and future direction显示文摘Bangladesh is considered one of the most suitable regions for fisheries in the world, with the world's largest flooded wetland and the third largest aquatic biodiversity in Asia after China and India. This paper reviews the performance of fisheries in Bangladesh using data collected from the Bangladesh Department of Fisheries, and related un-published grey literatures. The findings within describe recent growth within Bangladeshi inland fisheries, primarily in the inland aquaculture sector(2014e2015).This increase in the aquaculture production has been made possible with the implementation of scientific and technological modernization. From 2000 and 2016,aquaculture production increased from 712,640 and 2,060,408 metric t,a much larger quantity than wild capture production(1.023 million t)in 2016.There has also been a recent increase in the value of fishery exports, with more than US$34.08 billion in 2010 rising to more than US$46.60 billion in 2015.However,fisheries production is well below production targets despite the large gains seen in the aquaculture sector.Md.Mostafa Shamsuzzaman Mohammad Mahmudul Islam Nusrat Jahan Tania Md.Abdullah Al-Mamun Partho Protim Barman Xiangmin Xu 2017Aquaculture and Fisheries2017,2,4:4

Stabilization of expansive soils using chemical additives: A review显示文摘Volume instability of expansive soils due to moisture fluctuations is often disastrous, causing severe damages and distortions in the supported structures. It is,therefore, necessary to adequately improve the performance of such soils that they can favorably fulfil the post-construction stability requirements. This can be achieved through chemical stabilization using additives such as lime, cement and fly ash.In this paper, suitability of such additives under various conditions and their mechanisms are reviewed in detail. It is observed that the stabilization process primarily involves hydration, cation exchange, flocculation and pozzolanic reactions. The degree of stabilization is controlled by several factors such as additive type, additive content, soil type, soil mineralogy, curing period, curing temperature, delay in compaction,pH of soil matrix, and molding water content, including presence of nano-silica,organic matter and sulfate compounds.Provision of nano-silica not only improves soil packing but also accelerates the pozzolanic reaction. However, presence of deleterious compounds such as sulfate or organic matter can turn the treated soils unfavorable at times even worser than the unstabilized ones.Dharmendra Barman Sujit Kumar Dash 2022Journal of Rock Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering2022,14,4:3
Evaluating Fertilization Effects on Soil Physical Properties Using a Soil Quality Index in an Intensive Rice-Wheat Cropping System显示文摘Soil quality assessment has been suggested as an effective tool for evaluating sustainability of soil and crop management practices. The objective of this study was to develop a sensitive soil quality index(SQI) based on bulk density(BD),water-holding capacity(WHC),water-stable aggregates(WSA),aggregate mean weight diameter(AMWD),total organic C(TOC) and C input to evaluate the important rice-wheat cropping system on an Inceptisol in India.A long-term experiment has been conducted for 18 years at the Indian Council of Agricultural Research-Indian Institute of Farming Systems Research,Modipuram,India. The treatments selected for this study were comprised of a no-fertilizer control and N,P and K fertilizers(NPK) combined with Zn and S fertilizers(NPK+ Zn+S),farmyard manure(NPK+FYM),green gram residues(NPK+GR) and cereal residues(NPK+CR),laid out in a randomized complete block design with three replications.Soil samples were collected and analyzed for BD,WHC,WSA and TOC.Correlation analysis revealed that both rice and wheat yields signi?cantly increased with the increases in AMWD,TOC and C input, but decreased with the increase in BD.The SQI values were then generated based on regression analysis of BD,WSA,AMWD,TOC and C input with rice and wheat yields for the 0–15 and 15–30 cm soil layers, respectively.Regression analyses between crop yields and SQI values showed a quadratic type of relation with the coeffcient of determination(R^2) varying from 0.78 to 0.89.With regard to soil sustainability, applying crop residues to both rice and wheat could maintain soil quality for a longer period, whereas the highest yields of both the crops were recorded in the NPK+Zn+S treatment. The regression equations developed in this study could be used to monitor soil quality in a subhumid tropical rice-wheat cropping system.Bappa DAS Debashis CHAKRABORTY Vinod Kumar SINGH Mukhtar AHMED Amit Kumar SINGH Arijit BARMAN 2016Pedosphere2016,26,6:3
Image-guided therapies in the treatment of hepatocellular carcinoma: A multidisciplinary perspective显示文摘A multidisciplinary approach to the treatment of patients with unresectable hepatocellular carcinoma(HCC) has led to improvements in screening, detection, and treatments. Interventional techniques includethermal ablation, transarterial chemoembolization, and radioembolization whilst stereotactic body radiation therapy also uses imaging to target the radiation. Both survival rates and cure rates have improved markedly since the introduction of these techniques. This review article describes the image guided techniques used for the treatment of HCC.Jonathon Willatt Kevin K Hannawa Julie A Ruma Timothy L Frankel Dawn Owen Pranab M Barman 2015World Journal of Hepatology2015,7,2:2
Soil and onsite nutrient conservation potential of aromatic grasses at field scale under a shifting cultivated, degraded catchment in Eastern Ghats,India显示文摘Land degradation due to soil erosion is a global problem, especially on cultivated hill slopes. Economically important aromatic grasses can protect degraded hill slopes more effectively than field crops, but little information is available on their performance. This study quantifies runoff, sediment yield, enrichment ratios of soil and nutrients, and sediment-associated organic carbon and nutrients losses under three aromatic grass species: citronella(Cymbopogon nardus), lemon(Cymbopogon flexuosus), and palmarosa(Cymbopogon martini), compared with a traditional field crop, finger millet(Eleusine coracana)grown at three land slopes(4%, 8%, and 12%). It was observed that the degree of slope and type of grass both significantly influenced runoff generation. Runoff and sediment yield(SY) were significantly higher at 12% slope than at 8% and 4% slopes. Relation between rainfall and runoff were significant for all the grass species(p < 0.05). Palmarosa, lemon, and citronella grass reduced the SY by 10, 54, and 60%,respectively, over finger millet. SY was also significantly related to rainfall for all the treatments(p <0.05). The threshold runoff values to produce SY were higher for aromatic grasses compared to finger millet. Enrichment of clay, silt, sand, soil organic carbon(SOC), available nitrogen(N), phosphorus(P) and potassium(K) in the sediment were not significantly different between slopes but differed significantly between aromatic grasses and finger millet. Sediment associated nutrient load varied inversely with SY mainly because of the nutrient dissolution effect of high runoff volume. Annual loss of SOC and nutrients varied from 84.7-156.8 kg ha^(-1) y^(-1) for SOC, 4.38-9.18 kg ha^(-1) y^(-1) for available N, 0.35-0.75 kg ha^(-1) y^(-1) for available P, and 2.22-5.22 kg ha^(-1) y^(-1) for available K, with the lowest values for citronella and highest for finger millet. The study found that the aromatic grasses have greater environmental conservation values than finger millet on steep degraded land.Partha Pratim Adhikary Hunsur Chikkanarasimhaiah Hombegowda Dhananjay Barman Madegowda Madhu 2018International Journal of Sediment Research2018,33,3:2
Soil texture classification using multi class support vector machine显示文摘The objective of this study is to process the soil images to generate a digital soil classification system for rural farmers at low cost.Soil texture is the main factor to be considered before doing cultivation. It affects the crop selection and regulates the water transmission property. The conventional hydrometer method determines the percentage of sand, silt, and clay present in a soil sample. This method is very cost and time-consuming process. In this approach,we collect 50 soil samples from the different region of west Guwahati,Assam,India. The samples are photographed under a constant light condition using an Android mobile of 13 MP cameras. The fraction of sand, silt, and clay of the soil samples are determined using the hydrometer test. The result of the hydrometer test is processed with the United State Department of Agriculture soil classification triangle for the final soil classification.Soil images are processed through the different stages like pre-processing of soil images for image enhancement, extracting the region of interest for segmentation and the texture analysis for feature vector. The feature vector is calculated from the Hue,Saturation, and Value(HSV)histogram, color moments, color auto Correlogram,Gabor wavelets, and discrete wavelet transform. Finally,Support Vector Machine classifier is used to classify the soil images using linear kernel. The proposed method gives an average of 91.37%accuracy for all the soil samples and the result is nearly the same with the United State Department of Agriculture soil classification.Utpal Barman Ridip Dev Choudhury 2020Information Processing in Agriculture2020,7,2:2
