| 2 | Circular RNAs in colorectal cancer:Possible roles in regulation of cancer cells显示文摘Colorectal cancer(CRC) is the third most commonly diagnosed cancer in the world and the fourth principal cause of cancer deaths worldwide. Currently, there is a lack of low cost and noninvasive screening tests for CRC, becoming a serious health problem. In this context, a potential biomarker for the early detection of CRC has recently gained attention. Circular RNAs(circ RNA), a re-discovered, abundant RNA specie, is a type of noncoding covalent closed RNAs formed from both exonic and intronic sequences. These circular molecules are widely expressed in cells, exceeding the abundance of the traditional linear m RNA transcript. They can regulate gene expression, acting as real sponges for mi RNAs and also regulate alternative splicing or act as transcriptional factors and inclusive encoding for proteins. However, little is known about circ RNA and its relationship with CRC. | 3 | Effect of initial material bulk density and easily-degraded organic matter content on temperature changes during composting of cucumber stalk显示文摘To inactivate the potentially pathogenic microorganisms and safely utilize vegetable waste compost, ultra-high temperatures(> 70°C) should be maintained during the composting without having an inhibitory effect on maturity. This study investigated the influence of bulk density(part 1) and easily-degraded organic matter content(EDOMC, part 2) on temperature evolution during vegetable waste composting: Part 1: corn straw with different particle sizes was used to achieve different bulk densities in the composting material(BD1–BD3); Part 2: partial or total substitution of the corn straw by corn starch was carried out to obtain different EDOMC(ED1–ED4). The composting experiments were conducted in a labscale reactor(1.75 kg material) and lasted for 30 d. Temperature and CO2 emission were recorded daily, and the organic matter, lignocellulose, microbial activity, germination index(GI) and C/N of the samples were measured at different stages. The highest temperature(65.7°C) in part 1 occurred in the treatment with the bulk density of 0.35 g/cm3, which also had the longest thermophilic phase. Bulk density was found to seriously influence the utilization efficiency of O2 and heat transfer through materials, rather than heat production from organic matter degradation. In experiment part 2, the highest temperature was obtained with EDOMC of 45%(71.4°C). | 5 | Conversion from calcineurin inhibitors to mTOR inhibitors stabilizes diabetic and hypertensive nephropathy after liver transplant显示文摘AIM: To investigate if conversion to the mammalian target of rapamycin inhibitors(mTORi) improves renal function in diabetic and/or hypertensive liver transplant patients immunosuppressed with tacrolimus or cyclosporine.METHODS: The study included 86 liver graft recipients immunosuppressed with mTORi treatment after orthotopic liver transplantation(OLT), including all liver recipients with worsening renal function before conversion to mTORi(n = 55 patients) and recipients with normal renal function who converted to m TORi for other reasons(n = 31 patients). We identified patients with diabetes mellitus(n = 28), arterial hypertension(n = 27), proteinuria(n = 27) and all three factors(n = 8)(some patients have hypertension and diabetes and no proteinuria). The primary endpoint was evolution in renal function defined as the development in plasma creatinine as a function of diabetes mellitus(DM), hypertension(HT) or proteinuria. We required elevated serum creatinine for at least two weeks to define renal dysfunction.RESULTS: Only patients that converted because of renal failure with plasma creatinine levels > 1.5 mg/dL showed an improvement of renal function(2.14 to 1.77 mg/dL)(P = 0.02). Patients with DM showed no improvement of serum creatinine levels(1.31 mg/dL to 1.37 mg/dL) compared with non DM patients(1.31 mg/dL to 1.15 mg/dL)(P = 0.01), HT patients(1.48 mg/dL to 1.5 mg/dL) with non HT patients(1.21mg/d L to 1.08 mg/dL) and patients with proteinuria(1.44 mg/dL to 1.41 mg/dL) and no proteinuria(1.31 mg/dL to 1.11 mg/dL). CONCLUSION: In OLT recipients with diabetes or hypertensive nephropathy, conversion to m TORi does not improve renal function but stabilizes plasma levels of creatinine. Proteinuria is not a contraindication to conversion to m TORi; it also stabilizes renal function. | 6 | Effect of human disturbance on the structure and regeneration of forests in the Nevado de Toluca National Park, Mexico显示文摘Sample plots were established in the principal forest types in the the Nevado de Toluca National Park, Mexico including those dominated by Pinus hartwegii, Abies religiosa, Quercus laurina and Alnus jorullensis. The vertical structure was defined by three strata in the coniferous forests and two strata in the broadleaved forests. Timber harvesting in Abies religiosa and Quercus laurina forests and fires generated by humans in Pinus hartwegii forests impeded the recruitment of saplings. Mature trees were also heavily impacted by logging in Pinus hartwegii forests. On the contrary, Alnus jorullensis forests were increasing due to the disturbance of Pinus and Quercus forests, as well abandoned crop lands within the park. A combination of logging, uncontrolled fire, and grazing appears to be compromising the recruitment of important tree species in this national park. These factors, together with human settlements, have also increased the proportion of early successional species. | 8 | Clinical management of acute liver failure: Results of an international multi-center survey显示文摘AIM To assess the practice of caring for acute liver failure(ALF) patients in varying geographic locations and medical centers.METHODS Members of the European Acute Liver Failure Consortium completed an 88-item questionnaire detailing management of ALF. Responses from 22 transplantation centers in 11 countries were analyzed,treating between 300 and 500 ALF cases and performing over 100 liver transplants(LT) for ALF annually. The questions pertained to details of the institution and their clinical activity,standards of care,referral and admission,wardbased care versus intensive care unit(ICU) as well as questions regarding liver transplantation- including criteria,limitations,and perceived performance. Clinical data was also collected from 13 centres over a 3 mo period. RESULTS The interval between referral and admission of ALF patients to specialized units was usually less than 24 h and once admitted,treatment was provided by a multidisciplinary team. Principles of care of patients with ALF were similar among centers,particularly in relation to recognition of severity and care of the more critically ill. Centers exhibited similarities in thresholds for ICU admission and management of severe hepatic encephalopathy. Over 80% of centers administered n-acetyl-cysteine to ICU patients for non-paracetamolrelated ALF. There was significant divergence in the use of prophylactic antibiotics and anti-fungals,lactulose,nutritional support and imaging investigations in admitted patients and in the monitoring and treatment of intra-cranial pressure(ICP). ICP monitoring was employed in 12 centers,with the most common indications being papilledema and renal failure. Most patients listed for transplantation underwent surgery within an average waiting time of 1-2 d. Over a period of 3 mo clinical data from 85 ALF patients was collected. Overall patient survival at 90-d was 76%. Thirty six percent of patients underwent emergency LT,with a 90% post transplant survival to hospital discharge,42% survived with medical management alone. | 10 | Probabilistic Seismic Risk Assessment in Manizales,Colombia: Quantifying Losses for Insurance Purposes显示文摘A fully probabilistic seismic risk assessment was developed in Manizales, Colombia, considering assets of different types. The first type includes elements that are part of the water and sewage network, and the second type includes public and private buildings. This assessment required the development of a probabilistic seismic hazard analysis that accounts for the dynamic soil response,assembling high resolution exposure databases, and the development of damage models for different types of elements. The economic appraisal of the exposed assets was developed together with specialists of the water utilities company of Manizales and the city administration. The risk assessment was performed using several Comprehensive Approach to Probabilistic Risk Assessment modules as well as the R-System, obtaining results in terms of traditional metrics such as loss exceedance curve, average annual loss, and probable maximum loss. For the case of pipelines, repair rates were also estimated. The results for the water and sewage network were used in activities related to the expansion and maintenance strategies, as well as for the exploration of financial retention and transfer alternatives using insurance schemes based on technical,probabilistic, and prospective damage and loss estimations.In the case of the buildings, the results were used in the update of the technical premium values of the existing collective insurance scheme. | Mario A. | 17 | Thermal bridging of graphene nanosheets via covalent molecular junctions: A non-equilibrium Green's functions-density functional tightbinding study显示文摘Despite the uniquely high thermal conductivity of graphene is well known,the exploitation of graphene into thermally conductive nanomaterials and devices is limited by the inefficiency of thermal contacts between the individual nanosheets.A fascinating yet experimentally challenging route to enhance thermal conductance at contacts between graphene nanosheets is through molecular junctions,allowing covalently connecting nanosheets,otherwise interacting only via weak Van der Waals forces.Beside the bare existence of covalent connections,the choice of molecular structures to be used as thermal junctions should be guided by their vibrational properties,in terms of phonon transfer through the molecular junction.In this paper,density functional tight-binding combined with Green's functions formalism was applied for the calculation of thermal conductance and phonon spectra of several different aliphatic and aromatic molecular junctions between graphene nanosheets.Effects of molecular junction length,conformation,and aromaticity were studied in detail and correlated with phonon tunnelling spectra.The theoretical insight provided by this work can guide future experimental studies to select suitable molecular junctions,in order to enhance the thermal transport by suppressing the interfacial thermal resistances.This is attractive for various systems,including graphene nanopapers and graphene polymer nanocomposites,as well as related devices.In a broader view,the possibility to design molecular junctions to control phonon transport currently appears as an efficient way to produce phononic devices and controlling heat management in nanostructures. | Diego Martinez Gutierrez Alessa ndro Di Pierro Alessa ndro Pecchia Leon ardo Medra no San donas Rafael Gutierrez Mar Bernal Bohayra Mortazavi Gianaurelio Cuniberti Guido Saracco Alberto Fina | 2019 | Nano Research2019,12,4: | 2 |
| 18 | Microhabitat heterogeneity associated with Vanilla spp.and its influences on the microbial community of leaf litter and soil显示文摘The impact of forest microhabitats on physiochemical properties of the soil and that of microbial communities on tropical soils remain poorly understood.To elucidate the effect of tropical forest stand on leaf litter and soil microbial communities,we studied enzyme activities,microbial biomass,and diversity in three distinct microhabitats in terms of plant richness,diameter at breast height(DBH),and physiochemical properties of soil and litter,each associated with a different Vanilla sp.In the soil,positive correlations were found between electrical conductivity(EC)and total organic carbon(TOC)with phosphatase activity,and between nitrogen(N)and water-soluble carbon(WSC)content with urease activity(UA).In the litter,the water content was positively correlated with bacterial and fungal biomass,and N and WSC contents were positively correlated with fungal biomass.Positive correlations were found between plant richness and UA in the soil,plant richness and fungal biomass in the soil and litter,and DBH and fungal biomass in the litter.Amplicon sequencing revealed differences between microhabitats in the relative abundance of some fungal and bacterial taxa and in the bacterial community composition of both litter and soil.Bacterial richness and diversity were different between microhabitats,and,in litter samples,they were negatively correlated with DBH and plant richness,respectively.By contrast,none of the soil and litter physiochemical properties were significantly correlated with microbial diversity.Our results show that significant shifts in enzyme activity,microbial biomass,and diversity in the microhabitats were driven by key abiotic and biotic factors depending on the soil or litter sample type. | Gabriela Montes de Oca-Vasquez Frank Solano-Campos Bernal Azofeifa-Bolanos Amelia Paniagua-Vasquez Jose Vega-Baudrit Antonio Ruiz-Navarro Ruben Lopez-Mondejar Felipe Bastida | 2020 | Soil Ecology Letters2020,2,3: | 2 |
