1Reversibility of minimal hepatic encephalopathy following liver transplantation in Egyptian cirrhotic patients显示文摘AIM To evaluate the reversibility of minimal hepatic encephalopathy(MHE) following liver transplantation(LT) in Egyptian cirrhotic patients. METHODS This prospective study included twenty patients with biopsy-proven liver cirrhosis listed for LT and twenty ageand sex-matched healthy control subjects. All underwent neuro-psychiatric examination, laboratory investigations, radiological studies and psychometric tests including trail making test A(TMT A), TMT B, digit symbol test and serial dotting test. The psychometric hepatic encephalopathy score(PHES) was calculated for patients to diagnose MHE. Psychometric tests were repeated six months following LT in the cirrhotic patient group. RESULTS Before LT, psychometric tests showed highly significant deficits in cirrhotic patients in comparison to controls(P < 0.001). There was a statistically significant improvement in test values in the patient group after LT; however, their values were still significantly worse than those of the controls(P < 0.001). The PHES detected MHE in 16 patients(80%) before LT with a median value of -7 ± 3.5. The median PHES value was significantly improved following LT, reaching-4.5 ± 5(P < 0.001), and the number of patients with MHE decreased to 11(55%). The pre-transplant model for end-stage liver disease(MELD) score ≥ 15 was significantly related to the presence of post-transplant MHE(P = 0.005). More patients in whom reversal of MHE was observed had a pre-transplant MELD score < 15.CONCLUSION Reversal of MHE in cirrhotic patients could be achieved by LT, especially in those with a MELD score < 15.Mahmoud A Osman Moataz M Sayed Khaled A Mansour Shereen A Saleh Wesam A Ibrahim Sara M Abdelhakam Mohamed Bahaa Wael A Yousry Hosam S Elbaz Reginia N Mikhail Azza M Hassan Ehab H Elsayed Dalia A Mahmoud 2016World Journal of Hepatology2016,8,30:11
2Distribution and ecological risk assessment of some heavy metals in coastal surface sediments along the Red Sea,Egypt显示文摘The ecological risk assessment for Al,Zn,Cu,Ni,V,Pb,Cd,and Hg in surface sediment collected from the Egyptian Red Sea coast was evaluated using the Geo-accumulation Index(I_(geo)).Sediment Enrichment Factor(SEF) and Potential Ecological Risk Index(PERI) methods. The predominant heavy metal, aluminum, showed high concentrations along both of Aqaba Gulf(4378.8 ± 2554.1 μg/g) and southern part of the Red Sea(2972.8 + 1527.5 μg/g).while it recorded the lowest concentration in Suez Gulf(829.7 ± 398.2 μg/g).The determined heavy metal concentrations had the order of Al > Zn >-Ni > V > Pb > Cu > Cd > Hg.The statistical analyses showed some correlations among the heavy metals contents.Several international sediment quality guidelines were used to estimate the quality of the collected sediments.Interestingly, the recorded average heavy metals concentrations were lower than those of the permissible contents for sediment quality guidelines. The Geo-accumulation index calculations(I_(geo)) proved that the investigated region could be classified as an unpolluted area.Sediment Enrichment Factor(K_(SEF)) study showed high values in Suez Gulf region. The single pollution index analysis of heavy metals in the sediments(C^i_f) indicated that Al,Zn,V,and Pb were of natural origin, while Ni,Cd and Hg were seriously affected by human activities.Interestingly, amongst, all the determined heavy metals,Cd and Hg gave moderate ecological risk indicators.Ahmed El Nemr Ghada F.El-Said Azza Khaled Safaa Ragab 2016International Journal of Sediment Research2016,31,2:10
3Association of Fas/Apo1 gene promoter (-670 A/G) polymorphism in Tunisian patients with IBD显示文摘AIM: To detect a possible association between the polymorphism of the (-670 A/G) Fas/Apo1 gene promoter and susceptibility to Crohn's disease (CD) and ulcerative colitis (UC) in the Tunisian population. METHODS: The (-670 A/G) Fas polymorphism was analyzed in 105 patients with CD, 59 patients with UC, and 100 controls using the polymerase chain reaction restriction fragment length polymorphism method. RESULTS: Significantly lower frequencies of the Fas -670 A allele and A/A homozygous individuals were observed in CD and UC patients when compared with controls. Analysis of (-670 A/G) Fas polymorphism with respect to sex in CD and UC showed a significant difference in A/A genotypes between female patients and controls (P corrected = 0.004 in CD patients and P corrected = 0.02 in UC patients, respectively). Analysis also showed a statistically significant association between genotype AA of the (-670 A/G) polymorphism and the ileum localization of the lesions (P corrected = 0.048) and between genotype GG and the colon localization (Pcorrected = 0.009). The analysis ofinflammatory bowel disease patients according to clinical behavior revealed no difference. CONCLUSION: Fas-670 polymorphism was associated with the development of CD and UC in the Tunisian population.Walid Ben Aleya Imen Sfar Leila Mouelhi Houda Aouadi Mouna Makhlouf Salwa Ayed-Jendoubi Samira Matri Azza Filali Taoufik Najjar Taeib Ben Abdallah Khaled Ayed Yousr Gorgi 2009World Journal of Gastroenterology2009,15,29:3
