1Chitosan and chemically modified chitosan beads for acid dyes sorption显示文摘The capabilities of chitosan and chitosan-EGDE(ethylene glycol diglycidyl ether) beads for removing Acid Red 37(AR 37) and Acid Blue 25(AB 25) from aqueous solution were examined.Chitosan beads were cross-linked with EGDE to enhance its chemical resistance and mechanical strength.Experiments were performed as a function of pH,agitation period and concentration of AR 37 and AB 25.It was shown that the adsorption capacities of chitosan for both acid dyes were comparatively higher than those of chitosan-EGDE.This is mainly because cross-linking using EGDE reduces the major adsorption sites-NH3+ on chitosan.Langmuir isotherm model showed the best conformity compared to Freundlich and BET.The kinetic experimental data agreed very well to the pseudo second-order kinetic model.The desorption study revealed that after three cycles of adsorption and desorption by NaOH and HCl,both adsorbents retained their promising adsorption abilities.FT-IR analysis proved that the adsorption of acid dyes onto chitosan-based adsorbents was a physical adsorption.Results also showed that chitosan and chitosan-EGDE beads were favourable adsorbers and could be employed as low-cost alternatives for the removal of acid dyes in wastewater treatment.AZLAN Kamari WAN SAIME Wan Ngah LAI KEN Liew 2009Journal of Environmental Sciences2009,21,3:18

3Conversion of Malaysian low-rank coal to mesoporous activated carbon:Structure characterization and adsorption properties显示文摘Malaysian Selantik low-rank coal(SC)was used as a precursor to prepare a form of mesoporous activated carbon(SC-AC)with greater surface area(SA)via a microwave induced KOH-activation method.The characteristics of the SC and SC-AC were evaluated by the iodine number,ash content,bulk density,and moisture content The structure and surface characterization was carried out using pore structure analysis(BET),scanning electron microscopy with energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy(SEM-EDX),X-ray diffraction(XRD),Fourier Transform Infrared(FTIR),elemental analysis(CHNS),thermogravimetric analysis(TGA),and determination of the point of zero charge(pH(PZC)).These results signify a mesoporous structure of SC-AC with an increase of ca.1160 times(BET SA=1094.3 m^2·g^-1)as compared with raw SC without activation(BET SA=1.23 m^2·g^-1).The adsorptive properties of the SC-AC with methylene blue(MB)was carried out at variable adsorbent dose(0.2-1.6 g·L^-1),solution pH(2-12),initial MB concentrations(25-400 mg·L^-1),and contact time(0-290 min)using batch mode operation.The kinetic profiles follow pseudo-second order kinetics and the equilibrium uptake of MB conforms to the Langmuir model with a maximum monolayer adsorption capacity of 491.7 mg g^-1 at 303 K.Thermodynamic functions revealed a spontaneous endothermic adsorption process.The mechanism of adsorption included mainly electrostatic attractions,hydrogen bonding interaction,andπ-πstacking interaction.This work shows that Malaysian Selantik low-rank coal is a promising precursor for the production of low-cost and efficient mesoporous activated carbon with substantive surface area.Ali H.Jawad Khudzir Ismail Mohd Azlan Mohd Ishak Lee D. 4Regulatory control of the Na-Cl co-transporter NCC and its therapeutic potential for hypertension显示文摘Hypertension is the largest risk factor for cardiovascular disease,the leading cause of mortality worldwide.As blood pressure regulation is influenced by multiple physiological systems,hypertension cannot be attributed to a single identifiable etiology.Three decades of research into Mendelian forms of hypertension implicated alterations in the renal tubular sodium handling,particularly the distal convoluted tubule(DCT)-native,thiazide-sensitive Na-Cl cotransporter(NCC).Altered functions of the NCC have shown to have profound effects on blood pressure regulation as illustrated by the over activation and inactivation of the NCC in Gordon’s and Gitelman syndromes respectively.Substantial progress has uncovered multiple factors that affect the expression and activity of the NCC.In particular,NCC activity is controlled by phosphorylation/dephosphorylation,and NCC expression is facilitated by glycosylation and negatively regulated by ubiquitination.Studies have even found parvalbumin to be an unexpected regulator of the NCC.In recent years,there have been considerable advances in our understanding of NCC control mechanisms,particularly via the pathway containing the with-no-lysine[K](WNK)and its downstream target kinases,SPS/Ste20-related proline-alanine-rich kinase(SPAK)and oxidative stress responsive 1(OSR1),which has led to the discovery of novel inhibitory molecules.This review summarizes the currently reported regulatory mechanisms of the NCC and discusses their potential as therapeutic targets for treating hypertension.Nur Farah Meor Azlan Maarten P.Koeners Jinwei Zhang 2021Acta Pharmaceutica Sinica B2021,11,5:6
5Dynamics and Predictive Control of Gas Phase Propylene Polymerization in Fluidized Bed Reactors显示文摘A two-phase dynamic model,describing gas phase propylene polymerization in a fluidized bed reactor,was used to explore the dynamic behavior and process control of the polypropylene production rate and reactor temperature.The open loop analysis revealed the nonlinear behavior of the polypropylene fluidized bed reactor,justifying the use of an advanced control algorithm for efficient control of the process variables.In this case,a centralized model predictive control(MPC) technique was implemented to control the polypropylene production rate and reactor temperature by manipulating the catalyst feed rate and cooling water flow rate respectively.The corresponding MPC controller was able to track changes in the setpoint smoothly for the reactor temperature and production rate while the setpoint tracking of the conventional proportional-integral(PI) controller was oscillatory with overshoots and obvious interaction between the reactor temperature and production rate loops.The MPC was able to produce controller moves which not only were well within the specified input constraints for both control variables,but also non-aggressive and sufficiently smooth for practical implementations.Furthermore,the closed loop dynamic simulations indicated that the speed of rejecting the process disturbances for the MPC controller were also acceptable for both controlled variables.Ahmad Shamiri Mohamed azlan Hussain Farouq sabri Mjalli Navid Mostoufi Seyedahmad Hajimolana~ 2013Chinese Journal of Chemical Engineering2013,21,9:4

7WNK-SPAK/OSR1-NCC kinase signaling pathway as a novel target for the treatment of salt-sensitive hypertension显示文摘Hypertension is the most prevalent health condition worldwide,affecting~1 billion people.Gordon’s syndrome is a form of secondary hypertension that can arise due to a number of possible mutations in key genes that encode proteins in a pathway containing the With No Lysine[K](WNK)and its downstream target kinases,SPS/Ste20-related proline-alanine-rich kinase(SPAK)and oxidative stress responsive kinase 1(OSR1).This pathway regulates the activity of the thiazide-sensitive sodium chloride cotransporter(NCC),which is responsible for NaCl reabsorption in the distal nephron.Therefore,mutations in genes encoding proteins that regulate the NCC proteins disrupt ion homeostasis and cause hypertension by increasing NaCl reabsorption.Thiazide diuretics are currently the main treatment option for Gordon’s syndrome.However,they have a number of side effects,and chronic usage can lead to compensatory adaptations in the nephron that counteract their action.Therefore,recent research has focused on developing novel inhibitory molecules that inhibit components of the WNK-SPAK/OSR1-NCC pathway,thereby reducing NaCl reabsorption and restoring normal blood pressure.In this review we provide an overview of the currently reported molecular inhibitors of the WNK-SPAK/OSR1-NCC pathway and discuss their potential as treatment options for Gordon’s syndrome.Archie Brown Nur Farah Meor Azlan Zhijuan Wu Jinwei Zhang 2021Acta Pharmacologica Sinica2021,42,4:2
8Anti-encystment and amoebicidal activity of Lonicera japonica Thunb. and its major constituent Chlorogenic acid in vitro显示文摘Objective:To examine the acanthamoebicidal effects of ethyl acetate,aqueous and butanol fractions of dried flower buds of Lonicera japonica(L.japonica) Thunb.(Flos Lonicerae) in vitro.Methods:Acanthamoeba triangularis isolates were obtained from environmental water samples and identified by PCR.They were exposed to ethyl acetate,water and butanol fractions of L.japonica Thunb.at concentrations ranging from 0.5 mg/m L to 1.5 mg/m L.The extracts were evaluated for growth inhibition at 24,48 and 72 h,respectively.Chlorogenic acid at a concentration of 1 mg/mL was examined for inhibition of encystment.Results:Ethyl acetate fraction at a concentration of 1.5 mg/mL evoked a significant reduction of trophozoite viability by 48.9% after 24 h,49.2% after 48 h and 33.7% after 72 h Chlorogenic acid,the major active constituent of L.japonica Thunb.at the concentration of 1 mg/mL reduced the cysts/trophozoite ratio by 100% after 24 h,84.0% after 48 h and 72.3% after 72 h.This phenolic compound at concentration of 1 mg/mL concurrent with 0.6% hydrogen peroxide inhibited hydrogen peroxide-induced encystment by 92.8% at 72 h.Conclusions:Results obtained from this study show that ethyl acetate fraction at 1.5 mg/m L is the most potent fraction of L.japonica Thunb.and its major constituent chlorogenic acid showed the remarkable inhibition of encystment at a concentration of 1 mg/mL.Tooba Mahboob Abdul-Majid Azlan Tian-Chye Tan Chandramathi Samudi Shamala Devi Sekaran Veeranoot Nissapatorn Christophe Wiart 2016Asian Pacific Journal of Tropical Medicine2016,9,9:2
9Advances in reduction of NO_x and N_2O emission formation in an oxy-fired fluidized bed boiler显示文摘Fossil fuel combustion is one of the major means to meet the mounting global energy demand. However, the increasing NO_x and N_2 O emissions arising from fossil fuel combustion process have hazardous effects. Thus, mitigating these gases is vital to attain a sustainable environment. Interestingly, oxy-fuel combustion in fluidized bed for carbon capture and minimized NO_x emissions is strongly sustainable compare to the other approaches. It was assessed that NO_x formation and fuel-N conversion have significant limitation under oxy-fluidized bed compared to air mode and the mechanism of NO_x formation is still deficient and requires further development. In addition, this review paper discussed the potential of primary measure as low emission process with others supplementary techniques for feasible NO_x reduction. The influences of combustion mode, operating parameters, and reduction techniques such as flue gas recirculation, oxygen staging, biomass co-firing, catalyst, influence of fluidized bed design and structure, decoupling combustion and their merges are respectively evaluated.
