| 2 | Tumor microenvironment involvement in colorectal cancer progression via Wnt/β-catenin pathway:Providing understanding of the complex mechanisms of chemoresistance显示文摘Colorectal cancer(CRC)continues to be one of the main causes of death from cancer because patients progress unfavorably due to resistance to current therapies.Dysregulation of the Wnt/β-catenin pathway plays a fundamental role in the genesis and progression of several types of cancer,including CRC.In many subtypes of CRC,hyperactivation of theβ-catenin pathway is associated with mutations of the adenomatous polyposis coli gene.However,it can also be associated with other causes.In recent years,studies of the tumor microenvironment(TME)have demonstrated its importance in the development and progression of CRC.In this tumor nest,several cell types,structures,and biomolecules interact with neoplastic cells to pave the way for the spread of the disease.Cross-communications between tumor cells and the TME are then established primarily through paracrine factors,which trigger the activation of numerous signaling pathways.Crucial advances in the field of oncology have been made in the last decade.This Minireview aims to actualize what is known about the central role of the Wnt/β-catenin pathway in CRC chemoresistance and aggressiveness,focusing on crosscommunication between CRC cells and the TME.Through this analysis,our main objective was to increase the understanding of this complex disease considering a more global context.Since many treatments for advanced CRC fail due to mechanisms involving chemoresistance,the data here exposed and analyzed are of great interest for the development of novel and effective therapies. | María Belén Novoa Díaz María Julia Martín Claudia Gentili | 2022 | World Journal of Gastroenterology2022,28,26: | 3 |

| 6 | How the interplay among the tumor microenvironment and the gut microbiota influences the stemness of colorectal cancer cells显示文摘Colorectal cancer(CRC)remains the third most prevalent cancer disease and involves a multi-step process in which intestinal cells acquire malignant characteristics.It is well established that the appearance of distal metastasis in CRC patients is the cause of a poor prognosis and treatment failure.Nevertheless,in the last decades,CRC aggressiveness and progression have been attributed to a specific cell population called CRC stem cells(CCSC)with features like tumor initiation capacity,self-renewal capacity,and acquired multidrug resistance.Emerging data highlight the concept of this cell subtype as a plastic entity that has a dynamic status and can be originated from different types of cells through genetic and epigenetic changes.These alterations are modulated by complex and dynamic crosstalk with environmental factors by paracrine signaling.It is known that in the tumor niche,different cell types,structures,and biomolecules coexist and interact with cancer cells favoring cancer growth and development.Together,these components constitute the tumor microenvironment(TME).Most recently,researchers have also deepened the influence of the complex variety of microorganisms that inhabit the intestinal mucosa,collectively known as gut microbiota,on CRC.Both TME and microorganisms participate in inflammatory processes that can drive the initiation and evolution of CRC.Since in the last decade,crucial advances have been made concerning to the synergistic interaction among the TME and gut microorganisms that condition the identity of CCSC,the data exposed in this review could provide valuable insights into the biology of CRC and the development of new targeted therapies. | María Belén Novoa Díaz Pedro Carriere Claudia Gentili | 2023 | World Journal of Stem Cells2023,15,5: | 0 |

| 8 | Microenvironment and endocrine resistance in breast cancer:Friend or foe?显示文摘Breast cancer affects one in eight women around the world. Seventy five percent of these patients have tumors that are estrogen receptor positive and as a consequence receive endocrine therapy. However,about one third eventually develop resistance and cancer reappears. In the last decade our vision of cancer has evolved to consider it more of a tissuerelated disease than a cell-centered one. This editorial argues that we are only starting to understand the role the tumor microenvironment plays in therapy resistance in breast cancer. The development of new therapeutic strategies that target the microenvironment will come when we clearly understand this extremely complicated scenario. As such,and as a scientific community,we have extremely challenging work ahead. | 9 | Glutathione depleting drugs, antioxidants and intestinal calcium absorption显示文摘Glutathione(GSH) is a tripeptide that constitutes one of the main intracellular reducing compounds. The normal content of GSH in the intestine is essential to optimize the intestinal Ca2+ absorption. The use of GSH depleting drugs such as DL-buthionine-S,R-sulfoximine, menadione or vitamin K3, sodium deoxycholate or diets enriched in fructose, which induce several features of the metabolic syndrome, produce inhibition of the intestinal Ca2+ absorption. The GSH depleting drugs switch the redox state towards an oxidant condition provoking oxidative/nitrosative stress and inflammation, which lead to apoptosis and/or autophagy of the enterocytes. Either the transcellular Ca2+ transport or the paracellular Ca2+ route are altered by GSH depleting drugs. The gene and/or protein expression of transporters involved in the transcellular Ca2+ pathway are decreased. The flavonoids quercetin and naringin highly abrogate the inhibition of intestinal Ca2+ absorption, not only by restoration of the GSH levels in the intestine but also by their anti-apoptotic properties. Ursodeoxycholic acid, melatonin and glutamine also block the inhibition of Ca2+ transport caused by GSH depleting drugs. | 10 | Medical plant extracts and natural compounds with a hepatoprotective effect against damage caused by antitubercular drugs: A review显示文摘Drug-induced liver injury encompasses a spectrum of diseases ranging from mild biochemical abnormalities to acute liver failure; example of this scenery is hepatotoxicity caused by the first-line antituberculous drugs isoniazid, rifampin and pyrazinamide, which are basic for treatment of drug-sensible and drug-resistant tuberculosis. In the search for pharmacological alternatives to prevent liver damage, antitubercular drugs have been the subject of numerous studies and published reviews, a great majority of them carried out by Asian countries. At the same time, hepatoprotectors from plant source are now emerging as a possible alternative to counteract the toxic effects of these therapeutic agents. | 13 | Photooxidative stress activates a complex multigenic response integrating the phenylpropanoid pathway and ethylene,leading to lignin accumulation in apple(Malus domestica Borkh.)fruit显示文摘Photooxidative stress,when combined with elevated temperatures,triggers various defense mechanisms leading to physiological,biochemical,and morphological changes in fruit tissue.Furthermore,during sun damage,apple fruit undergo textural changes characterized by high flesh firmness compared to unexposed fruit.Fuji and Royal Gala apples were suddenly exposed to sunlight on the tree and then sampled for up to 29 days.Cell wall components and lignin biosynthetic pathway analyses were carried out on the fruit tissue.At harvest,Fuji apples with different sun exposure levels,such as exposed to direct sunlight(Exp),shaded(Non-Exp),and with severe sun damage(Sev),were also characterized.In fruit suddenly exposed to sunlight,the expression levels of phenylpropanoid-related genes,phenylalanine ammonia lyase(MdPAL),chalcone synthase(MdCHS),and flavanone-3-hydroxylase(MdF3H),were upregulated in the skin and flesh of Exp and Sev.Exposure had little effect on the lignin-related genes caffeic acid Omethyltransferase 1(MdCOMT1)and cinnamyl alcohol dehydrogenase(MdCAD)in the skin;however,the expression of these genes was highly induced in the flesh of Exp and Sev in both cultivars.Lignin deposition increased significantly in skin with sun injury(Sev);in flesh,this increase occurred late during the stress treatment.Additionally,the ethylene biosynthesis genes 1-aminocyclopropane-1-carboxylate synthase(MdACS)and 1-aminocyclopropane-1-carboxylate oxidase(MdACO)were highly expressed in the skin and flesh tissues but were more upregulated in Sev than in Exp during the time-course experiment,which paralleled the induction of the phenylpropanoid pathway and lignin accumulation.At harvest,flesh from Sev fruit exhibited higher firmness than that from Non-Exp and Exp fruit,although no differences were observed in the alcohol-insoluble residues(AIR)among groups.The fractionation of cell wall polymers revealed an increase in the uronic acid contents of the water-soluble pectin fraction(WSF)in Exp and Sev tissues compared to Non-Exp tissues,while the other pectin-rich fractions,that is,CDTA-soluble(CSF)and Na2CO3-soluble(NSF),were increased only in Sev.The amount of hemicellulose and cellulose did not differ among fruit conditions.These findings suggest that increases in the flesh firmness of apples can be promoted by photooxidative stress,which is associated with the induction of lignin accumulation in the skin and flesh of stressed fruit,with the involvement of stress phytohormones such as ethylene. | Carolina A.Torres Constanza Azocar Patricio Ramos Ricardo Pérez-Díaz Gloria Sepulveda María A.Moya-León | 2020 | Horticulture Research2020,7,1: | 1 |
