Immobilization of Lead and Cadmium in Contaminated Soil Using Amendments: A Review显示文摘Since the inception of industrial revolution, metal refining plants using pyrometallurgical processes have generated the prodigious emissions of lead(Pb) and cadmium(Cd). As the core target of such pollutants, a large number of soils are nowadays contaminated over widespread areas, posing a great threat to public health worldwide. Unlike organic pollutants, Pb and Cd do not undergo chemical or microbial breakdown and stay likely in site for longer duration after their release. Immobilization is an in-situ remediation technique that uses cost-effective soil amendments to reduce Pb and Cd availability in the contaminated soils. The Pb and Cd contamination in the soil environment is reviewed with focus on source enrichment, speciation and associated health risks, and immobilization options using various soil amendments. Commonly applied and emerging cost-effective soil amendments for Pb and Cd immobilization include phosphate compounds, liming, animal manure, biosolids, metal oxides, and biochar. These immobilizing agents could reduce the transfer of metal pollutants or residues to food web(plant uptake and leaching to subsurface water) and their long-term sustainability in heavy metal fixation needs further assessment.Amanullah MAHAR WANG Ping LI Ronghua ZHANG Zengqiang 2015Pedosphere2015,25,4:56
Use of Biochar as an Amendment for Remediation of Heavy Metal-Contaminated Soils:Prospects and Challenges显示文摘Biochar(BC), known as the new black gold, is a stable, novel carbonaceous by-product that is synthesized through pyrolysis of biological materials in the absence of O_2.Recently, an emerging interest in the application of BC as a robust soil amendment has given rise to a broad research area in science and technology. It is considered a promising remediation option for heavy metal(HM)-contaminated soils to reduce HM bioavailability to plants.Remediation efficacy of BC depends on the porosity, composition, pyrolysis temperature, feedstock, and residence time of pyrolysis. This review article aimed to present an overview of BC use in the immobilization of HMs, i.e., Cd, As, Pb, Zn, Ni, Cu, Mn, Cr, and Sb, in contaminated soils. The remaining uncertain factors, including the specific soil HM immobilization mechanisms, long-term beneficial effects, and potential environmental risks associated with BC application are analyzed.Future research must be conducted to ensure that the management of environmental pollution is in accord with ecological sustainability and adaptation of the black gold biotechnology on a commercial basis for immobilization of HMs in contaminated soils.Altaf Hussain LAHORI GUO Zhanyu ZHANG Zengqiang LI Ronghua Amanullah MAHAR Mukesh Kumar AWASTHI SHEN Feng Tanveer Ali SIAL Farhana KUMBHAR WANG Ping JIANG Shuncheng 2017Pedosphere2017,27,6:28
Association of frailty with all-cause mortality and bleeding among elderly patients with acute myocardial infarction: a systematic review and meta-analysis显示文摘Background Frailty is a multidimensional syndrome that reflects the physiological reserve of elderly. It is related to unfavorable outcomes in various cardiovascular conditions. We conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis of the association of frailty with all-cause mortality and bleeding after acute myocardial infarction(AMI)in the elderly. Methods We comprehensively searched the databases of MEDLINE and EMBASE from inception to March 2019.The studies that reported mortality and bleeding in AMI patients who were evaluated and classified by frailty status were included.Data from each study were combined using the random-effects,generic inverse variance method of Der Simonian and Laird to calculate hazard ratio(HR),and 95%confidence interval(CI).Results Twenty-one studies from 2011 to 2019 were included in this meta-analysis involving 143,301 subjects(mean age 75.33-year-old,60.0%male).Frailty status was evaluated using different methods such as Fried Frailty Index.Frailty was statistically associated with increased early mortality in nine studies(pooled HR=2.07,95%CI:1.67-2.56,P<0.001,I^2=41.2%)and late mortality in 11 studies(pooled HR=2.30,95%CI:1.70-3.11,P<0.001,I^2=65.8%).Moreover,frailty was also statistically associated with higher bleeding in 7 studies(pooled HR=1.34,95%CI:1.12-1.59,P<0.001,I^2=4.7%).Conclusion Frailty is strongly and independently associated with bleeding, early and late mortality in elderly with AMI.Frailty assessment should be considered as an additional risk factor and used to guide toward personalized treatment strategies.Prapaipan Putthapiban Wasawat Vutthikraivit Pattara Rattanawong Weera Sukhumthammarat Napatt Kanjanahattakij Jakrin Kewcharoen Aman Amanullah 2020Journal of Geriatric Cardiology2020,17,5:10
Dry Matter Partitioning and Harvest Index Differ in Rice Genotypes with Variable Rates of Phosphorus and Zinc Nutrition显示文摘Phosphorus(P) and zinc(Zn) deficiencies are the major problems that decrease crop productivity under rice-wheat cropping system. Field experiments were conducted to investigate impacts of P(0, 40, 80 and 120 kg/hm^2) and Zn levels(0, 5, 10 and 15 kg/hm^2) on dry matter(DM) accumulation and partitioning, and harvest index of three rice genotypes ‘fine(Bamati-385) vs. coarse(F-Malakand and Pukhraj)' at various growth stages(tillering, heading and physiological maturity). The experiments were conducted at farmers' field at Batkhela in Northwestern Pakistan for two years in summer 2011 and 2012. The two year pooled data reveled that there were no differences in percent of DM partitioning into leaves and culms with application of different P and Zn levels, and genotypes at tillering. The highest P level(120 kg/hm^2) partitioned more DM into panicles than leaves and culms at heading and physiological maturity stages. The highest Zn level(15 kg/hm^2) accumulated more DM and partitioned more DM into panicles than leaves and culms at heading and physiological maturity stages. The hybrid rice(Pukhraj) produced and partitioned more DM into panicles than F-Malakand and Bamati-385 at heading and physiological maturity stages. Higher DM accumulation and greater amounts of partitioning into panicles at heading and physiological maturity stages was noticed with increase in P and Zn levels, and the increase was significantly higher in the coarse rice genotypes than fine. We concluded that the growing hybrid rice with application of 120 kg/hm^2 P + 15 kg/hm^2 Zn not only increases total DM accumulation and partitioned greater amounts into the reproductive plant parts(panicles) but also results in higher harvest index.Amanullah Inamullah 2016Rice science2016,23,2:7
Interactive Effects of Potassium and Phosphorus on Phenology and Grain Yield of Sunflower in Northwest Pakistan显示文摘Potassium(K) and phosphorus(P) applications improve growth, increase yield and yield components of sunflower(Helianthus annuus L.) on K and P deficient soils in Northwest Pakistan.A field experiment was conducted using sunflower cv.Hysun-33 at the New Developmental Research Farm of KPK Agricultural University,Peshawar,Pakistan, during summer 2006.The experimental design was a randomized complete block in split plot arrangements, with six levels of K(0,25,50,75,100,and 125 kg K ha-1) as main plots and four levels of P(0,45,90,and 135 kg P ha-1) as sub-plots with three replications.Sunflower yield and yield components responded positively to K and P fertilization but the magnitude of response varied with the levels of K and P.Days to flowering and maturity, grains per head,1000-grain weight, shelling percentage, and grain yield increased tremendously in the K and P-fertilized plots as compared to the control with no K and P applied. The combined application of 100 kg K and 45 kg P ha-1 significantly increased yield components, grain yield, harvest index, and shelling percentage of sunflower, suggesting that 100 kg K ha-1 in combination with 45 kg P ha-1 could maximize productivity of sunflower planted after wheat on the K and P deficient soils in the study area.AMANULLAH M.W.KHAN 2010Pedosphere2010,20,5:6
Mycoremediation of Potentially Toxic Trace Elements--a Biological Tool for Soil Cleanup:A Review显示文摘Anthropogenic and geogenic activities release potentially toxic trace elements(PTEs) that impact human health and the environment. Increasing environmental pollution stresses the need for environmentally friendly remediation technologies. Physico-chemical treatments are effective, but are costly and generate secondary pollution on-or off-site. Phytoremediation is a biological treatment that provides positive results for PTE eradication with few limitations. Mycoremediation, a type of bioremediation to use macrofungi(mushrooms) for PTE extraction from polluted sites, is the best option for soil cleanup. This review highlights the scope, mechanisms, and potentials of mycoremediation. Mushrooms produce a variety of extracellular enzymes that degrade polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons(PAHs), polychlorinated biphenyls(PCBs), pesticides, dyes, and petroleum hydrocarbons into simpler compounds. Cadmium(Cd), lead(Pb), mercury(Hg), chromium(Cr), copper(Cu), zinc(Zn), and iron(Fe) have been effectively extracted by Phellinus badius, Amanita spissa, Lactarius piperatus, Suillus grevillei, Agaricus bisporous, Tricholoma terreum, and Fomes fomentarius, respectively. Mycoremediation is affected by environmental and genetic factors, such as p H, substrate, mycelium age, enzyme type, and ecology. The bioaccumulation factor(BAF) can make clear the effectiveness of a mushroom for the extraction of PTEs from the substrate. Higher BAF values of Cd(4.34), Pb(2.75), Cu(9), and Hg(95) have been reported for Amanita muscaria, Hypholoma fasciculare, Russula foetens, and Boletus pinophilus, respectively, demonstrating their effectiveness and suitability for mycoremediation of PTEs.Amjad ALI GUO Di Amanullah MAHAR WANG Ping SHEN Feng LI Ronghua ZHANG Zengqiang 2017Pedosphere2017,27,2:2
