1Aspartate transaminase to platelet ratio index in hepatitis C virus and Schistosomiasis coinfection显示文摘AIM: To assess the diagnostic accuracy,of aminotransferase-to-platelet ratio index(APRI) alone and with antischistosomal antibody(Ab) in patients with hepatitis C virus(HCV) and schistosomiasis coinfection. METHODS: This retrospective study included medical records of three hundred and eighty three Egyptianmen patients who had undergone percutaneous liver biopsy between January 2006 to April 2014 in tertiary care hospital in Qatar for diagnosis or monitoring purpose were selected. Data of patients > 18 years of age were included in the study. The values of HCV RNA titer and antischistosomal antibody titer were also taken into consideration. Patients were excluded from the study if they had any other concomitant chronic liver disease,including; history of previous antiviral or interferon therapy,immunosuppressive,therapy,chronic hepatitis B infection,human immunodeficiency virus co-infection,autoimmune hepatitis,decompensated liver disease,hepatocellular carcinoma,prior liver transplantation,and if no data about the liver biopsy present. RESULTS: Median age of patients was 46 years. About 7.1% had no fibrosis,whereas 30.4%,37.5%,20.4%,and 4.6% had fibrosis of stage Ⅰ,Ⅱ,Ⅲ,and Ⅳ respectively. In bivariate analysis,APRI score,levels of AST,platelet count and age of patient showed statistically significant association with liver fibrosis(P < 0.0001); whereas antischistosomal antibody titer(P = 0.52) and HCV RNA titer(P = 0.79) failed to show a significant association. The respective AUC values for no fibrosis,significant fibrosis,severe fibrosis and cirrhosis of APRI score were 63%,73.2%,81.1% and 88.9% respectively. This showed good sensitivity and specificity of APRI alone for grading of liver fibrosis. But the inclusion of anti-Schistosoma antibody did not improve the prediction of fibrosis stage. CONCLUSION: The study results suggest that noninvasive biochemical markers like APRI are sensitive and specific in diagnosing the degree of fibrosis and cirrhosis in patients with coinfection of HCV and schistosomiasis as compared to biopsy. 2Geoaccumulation and distribution of heavy metals in the urban river sediment显示文摘Current study presents the application of chemometric techniques to comprehend the interrelations among sediment variables whilst identifying the possible pollution source at Langat River,Malaysia.Surface sediment samples(0-10 cm)were collected at 22 sampling stations and analyzed for total metals(^(48)Cd,^(29)Cu,^(30)Zn,^(82)Pb),pH,redox potential(Eh),salinity,electrical conductivity(EC),loss on ignition(LOI)and cation exchange capacity(CEC).The principal component analysis(PCA)scrutinized the origin of environmental pollution by various anthropogenic and natural activities:four principal components were obtained with 86.34%(5 cm)and88.34%(10 cm).Standard,forward and backward stepwise discriminant analysis effectively discriminate 2variables(84.06%)indicating high variation of heavy metals accumulation at both depth.The cluster analysis accounted for high input of Zn and Pb at LA8,LA 10,LA 11 and LA 12 that mergers three(5 cm)and four(10cm)into clusters.This is consistent with the contamination factor(C_1)that shows high Cd(LA 1)and Pb(LA 7,LA 8,LA 10,LA 11 and LA 12)contaminations at 5cm.These indicate that Pb and Zn are the most bioavailable metals in the sediment with significant positive linear relationship at both sediment depths.Therefore,this approach is a good indication of environmental pollution status that transfers new findings on the assessment of heavy metals by interpreting large complex datasets and predicting the fate of heavy metals in the sediment.Nur Aliaa SHAFIE Ahmad Zaharin ARIS Hazzeman HARIS 2014International Journal of Sediment Research2014,29,3:2

9Tailored nanocarriers and bioconjugates for combating glioblastoma and other brain tumors显示文摘Worldwide,the incidence of primary brain tumors is on the rise.Unfortunately,noninvasive drug therapy is hampered by poor access of most drugs to the brain due to the insurmountable blood-brain barrier(BBB).Nanotechnology holds great promise for noninvasive therapy of severe brain diseases.Furthermore,recent bioconjugation strategies have enabled the invasion of the BBB via tailored-designed bioconjugates either with targeting moieties or alterations in the physicochemical and/or the pharmacokinetic parameters of central nervous system(CNS)active pharmaceutical ingredients.Multifunctional systems and new entities are being developed to target brain cells and tumor cells to resist the progression of brain tumors.Direct conjugation of an FDA-approved drug with a targeting moiety,diagnostic moiety,or pharmacokinetic-modifying moiety represents another current approach in combating brain tumors and metastases.Finally,genetic engineering,stem cells,and vaccinations are innovative nontraditional approaches described in different patents for the management of brain tumors and metastases.This review summarizes the recent technologies and patent applications in the past five years for the noninvasive treatment of glioblastoma and other brain tumors.Till now,there has been no optimal strategy to deliver therapeutic agents to the CNS for the treatment of brain tumors and metastases.Intensive research efforts are ongoing to bring novel CNS delivery systems to potential clinical application.Fatema ELAmrawy Amr A.Othman Chris Adkins Aliaa Helmy Mohamed I.Nounou 2016Journal of Cancer Metastasis and Treatment2016,2,1:1

14Buffalo stirred yoghurt fortified with grape seed extract:New insights into its functional properties显示文摘Grape seed extract(GSE)is considered one of the major byproducts,which are rich in phenolic content and possess several health-promoting activities including antibacterial,anticancer,and antioxidant.The current research was devoted to improve the bioactive properties of stirred yoghurt through supplementation with GSE at three concentrations(0.1,0.25,and 0.5 g/100 g yoghurt).The obtained stirred yoghurts were analyzed for determining their composition,pH,syneresis,viscosity,and sensory evaluation.Furthermore,some functional properties including antioxidant,antibacterial,anticancer activities were estimated.Significant increments(p≤0.05)were observed in total solids,ash contents,pH,water holding capacity,and viscosity values,especially when 0.5%GSE was added.Moreover,adding 0.5%GSE showed higher(p≤0.05)in vitro antioxidant,antibacterial,and anticancer activities.Interestingly,the improved bioactive properties resulting from adding GSE,even at the higher concentration,were not accompanied by any change in sensory properties.In particular,the color descriptor was mostly preferred by panelists when 0.5%GSE was added.The assessors did not observe any off-flavors in any of the tested stirred yoghurt samples.Therefore,the functional properties of stirred yoghurt could be improved by adding GSE preparation without affecting its organoleptic properties.Suzan H.Tami Esmat Aly Aliaa A.Darwish Esmat S.Mohamed 2022Food Bioscience2022,47,3:0
15Hybrid Feature Selection Method for Predicting Alzheimer’s Disease Using Gene Expression Data显示文摘Gene expression(GE)classification is a research trend as it has been used to diagnose and prognosis many diseases.Employing machine learning(ML)in the prediction of many diseases based on GE data has been a flourishing research area.However,some diseases,like Alzheimer’s disease(AD),have not received considerable attention,probably owing to data scarcity obstacles.In this work,we shed light on the prediction of AD from GE data accurately using ML.Our approach consists of four phases:preprocessing,gene selection(GS),classification,and performance validation.In the preprocessing phase,gene columns are preprocessed identically.In the GS phase,a hybrid filtering method and embedded method are used.In the classification phase,three ML models are implemented using the bare minimum of the chosen genes obtained from the previous phase.The final phase is to validate the performance of these classifiers using different metrics.The crux of this article is to select the most informative genes from the hybrid method,and the best ML technique to predict AD using this minimal set of genes.Five different datasets are used to achieve our goal.We predict AD with impressive values forMultiLayer Perceptron(MLP)classifier which has the best performance metrics in four datasets,and the Support Vector Machine(SVM)achieves the highest performance values in only one dataset.We assessed the classifiers using sevenmetrics;and received impressive results,allowing for a credible performance rating.The metrics values we obtain in our study lie in the range[.97,.99]for the accuracy(Acc),[.97,.99]for F1-score,[.94,.98]for kappa index,[.97,.99]for area under curve(AUC),[.95,1]for precision,[.98,.99]for sensitivity(recall),and[.98,1]for specificity.With these results,the proposed approach outperforms recent interesting results.With these results,the proposed approach outperforms recent interesting results.Aliaa El-Gawady BenBella S.Tawfik Mohamed A.Makhlouf 2023Computers, Materials & Continua2023,,3:0
16Microalbuminuria in hepatitis C-genotype 4:Effect of pegylated interferon and ribavirin显示文摘AIM:To study the relation between hepatitis C virus (HCV) genotype 4 and microalbuminuria and renal impairment in relation to hepatic histology, and viremia in the absence of cryoglobulinemia, and to examine the effect of treatment on microalbuminuria.METHODS: Three hundred subjects, including 233 HCV genotype-4 infected patients, were tested for cryoglobulinemia, microalbuminuria, albumin creatinine ratio (ACR), urea, creatinine, and estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR). The parameters were measured again in the HCV patients after 48 wk of treatment with pegylated interferon and ribavirin.RESULTS: Significantly higher levels of microalbumin- uria were detected in HCV-positive patients compared to HCV-negative controls (median 9.5 vs 5.9, respectively, Kruskal-Wallis P=0.017). Log microalbuminuria was significantly correlated with hepatic inflammation (r=0.13, P=0.036) and f ibrosis (r=0.12, P=0.061), but not with viral load (r=-0.03, P=0.610), or alanine transaminase (r=-0.03, P=0.617). Diabetes mellitus neither significantly moderated (χ2=0.13, P=0.720), nor mediated (Sobel test P=0.49) the HCV effect. HCV status was signifi cantly associated with log microalbu-minuria (χ2=4.97, P=0.026), adjusting for age, gender, diabetes, cryoglobulinemia, urea and creatinine. A positive HCV status was not significantly associated with low eGFR (<60 mL/min every 1.73 m2) [odds ratio (OR): 0.5, 95% confidence interval (CI):0.2-1.4], nor with high ACR (OR: 1.7, 95% CI:0.7-4.1). End-of-treatment response (ETR) was achieved in 51.9% of patients. Individuals with ETR had significantly lower microalbuminuria post-treatment (χ2=8.19, P=0.004).CONCLUSION: HCV affected the development of microalbuminuria independent of diabetes or cryoglobulinemia. 17Predicting the impacts of climate change on the distribution of Moringa peregrina(Forssk.)Fiori-A conservation approach显示文摘Climate change will affect the geographic distribution and richness of species at different spatial and temporal scales.We applied Maximum entropy(MaxEnt)modeling to predict the potential influence of climatic change on the current and future distribution of the important mountainous tree species Moringa peregrina(Forssk.)Fiori.The Maxent model performed better than random models for the species with the training and test AUC(Area Under the receiver-operating characteristic Curve)values of 0.96 and 0.90,respectively.Jackknife test and response curves showed that the distribution of the species negatively correlates with higher altitudes and precipitation in October and November.Moreover,it positively correlates with the total annual precipitation and precipitation in January.Under current and future climatic conditions,our model predicted habitat gains for M.peregrina towards the coastal northern and southern limits of its distribution.The potentially suitable habitats,under future climate projections,are currently characterized by elevations of<1000 m a.s.l.and total annual precipitation of 80-225 mm/year.Moderate and high potential habitat suitability will increase by 5.6%-6%and 2.1%-2.3%,under RCP2.6 and RCP4.5 scenario,respectively.The results indicated that the habitat suitability of M.peregrina would increase with increasing climate warming,particularly under RCP2.6 scenario.We recommend sustainable conservation and cultivation of Moringa peregrina in its current habitats along the Red Sea mountains.Emad A.FARAHAT Aliaa M.REFAAT 2021Journal of Mountain Science2021,18,5:0
18An Energy-Efficient Wireless Power Transmission-Based Forest Fire Detection System显示文摘Compared with the traditional techniques of forest fires detection,wireless sensor network(WSN)is a very promising green technology in detecting efficiently the wildfires.However,the power constraint of sensor nodes is one of the main design limitations of WSNs,which leads to limited operation time of nodes and late fire detection.In the past years,wireless power transfer(WPT)technology has been known as a proper solution to prolong the operation time of sensor nodes.In WPT-based mechanisms,wireless mobile chargers(WMC)are utilized to recharge the batteries of sensor nodes wirelessly.Likewise,the energy of WMC is provided using energy-harvesting or energy-scavenging techniques with employing huge,and expensive devices.However,the high price of energy-harvesting devices hinders the use of this technology in large and dense networks,as such networks require multiple WMCs to improve the quality of service to the sensor nodes.To solve this problem,multiple power banks can be employed instead of utilizing WMCs.Furthermore,the long waiting time of critical sensor nodes located outside the charging range of the energy transmitters is another limitation of the previous works.However,the sensor nodes are equipped with radio frequency(RF)technology,which allows them to exchange energy wirelessly.Consequently,critical sensor nodes located outside the charging range of the WMC can easily receive energy from neighboring nodes.Therefore,in this paper,an energy-efficient and cost-effective wireless power transmission(ECWPT)scheme is presented to improve the network lifetime and performance in forest fire detection-based systems.Simulation results exhibit that ECWPT scheme achieves improved network performance in terms of computational time(12.6%);network throughput(60.7%);data delivery ratio(20.9%);and network overhead(35%)as compared to previous related schemes.In conclusion,the proposed scheme significantly improves network energy efficiency for WSN.Arwa A.Mashat Niayesh Gharaei Aliaa M.Alabdali 2022Computers, Materials & Continua2022,,7:0

20Prevalence and treatment patterns of ranibizumab and photodynamic therapy in a tertiary care setting in Malaysia显示文摘AIM:To describe the prevalence and changes in treatment patterns of ranibizumab and photodynamic therapy(PDT) among retinal disease patients who attended the Ophthalmology Clinic in the tertiary care Hospital Selayang from 2010 to 2014.METHODS:Study subjects were recruited retrospectively using the Electronic Medical Record(EMR) database software in Hospital Selayang.Demographic data,medical history,diagnostic procedure,treatments and diagnosis of patients were recorded.RESULTS:The five-year analysis included 821 patients with a mean age of 65.9±11.73 y.Overall,there were a highernumber of males(63.1%) and a higher number of Chinese(47.4%) patients.Among the 821 patients,62.9% received ranibizumab injection followed by 19.2% PDT therapy and 17.9% had ranibizumab combined with PDT therapy.Age-related macular degeneration(AMD) and polypoidal choroidal vasculopathy(PCV) were the most common retinal eye diseases reported,recording prevalence of 25.0% and 45.6%,respectively.The trend in ranibizumab treatment was reported to increase while PDT showed a decrease in trend from year 2010 to 2014.In terms of treatment,following multiple logistic regression,AMD was associated with the subjects being more likely to have received ranibizumab monotherapy(P<0.001) while PCV was associated with more likely to have received PDT(P<0.001) and PDT combined with ranibizumab therapy(P<0.001).CONCLUSION:The tertiary care setting in Malaysia is consistent with management of patients from other countries whereby ranibizumab is the most common treatment given to patients with AMD,while PCV patients most commonly receive PDT and ranibizumab combined with PDT therapy.Nur Afiqah Mohamad Vasudevan Ramachandran Patimah Ismail Hazlita Mohd lsa Yoke Mun Chan Nor Fariza Ngah Norshakimah Md Bakri Siew Mooi Ching Fan Kee Hoo Wan Aliaa Wan Sulaiman 2017International Journal of Ophthalmology(English edition)2017,10,12:0
