1Influence of rock property correlation on reliability analysis of rock slope stability: From property characterization to reliability analysis显示文摘Cohesion(c) and friction angle(φ) of rock are important parameters required for reliability analysis of rock slope stability. There is correlation between c and φ which affects results of reliability analysis of rock slope stability. However, the characterization of joint probability distribution of c and φ through which their correlation can be estimated requires a large amount of rock property data, which are often not available for most rock engineering projects. As a result, the correlation between c and φ is often ignored or simply assumed during reliability studies, which may lead to bias estimation of failure probability. In probabilistic rock slope stability analysis, the influence of ignoring or simply assuming the correlation of the rock strength parameters(i.e., c and φ) on the reliability of rock slopes has not been fully investigated. In this study, a Bayesian approach is developed to characterize the correlation between c and φ, and an expanded reliability-based design(RBD) approach is developed to assess the influence of correlation between c and φ on reliability of a rock slope. The Bayesian approach characterizes the sitespecific joint probability distribution of c and φ, and quantifies the correlation between c and φ using available limited data pairs of c and φ from a rock project. The expanded RBD approach uses the joint probability distribution of c and φ obtained through the Bayesian approach as inputs, to determine the reliability of a rock slope. The approach gives insight into the propagation of the correlation between c and φ through their joint probability into the reliability analysis, and their influence on the calculated reliability of the rock slope. The approaches may be applied in practice with little additional effort from a conventional analysis. 2Evaluation of empirical estimation of uniaxial compressive strength of rock using measurements from index and physical tests显示文摘The uniaxial compressive strength(UCS) of rock is an important parameter required for design and analysis of rock structures,and rock mass classification.Uniaxial compression test is the direct method to obtain the UCS values.However,these tests are generally tedious,time-consuming,expensive,and sometimes impossible to perform due to difficult rock conditions.Therefore,several empirical equations have been developed to estimate the UCS from results of index and physical tests of rock.Nevertheless,numerous empirical models available in the literature often make it difficult for mining engineers to decide which empirical equation provides the most reliable estimate of UCS.This study evaluates estimation of UCS of rocks from several empirical equations.The study uses data of point load strength(Is(50)),Schmidt rebound hardness(SRH),block punch index(BPI),effective porosity(n) and density(ρ)as inputs to empirically estimate the UCS.The estimated UCS values from empirical equations are compared with experimentally obtained or measured UCS values,using statistical analyses.It shows that the reliability of UCS estimated from empirical equations depends on the quality of data used to develop the equations,type of input data used in the equations,and the quality of input data from index or physical tests.The results show that the point load strength(Is(50)) is the most reliable index for estimating UCS among the five types of tests evaluated.Because of type-specific nature of rock,restricting the use of empirical equations to the similar rock types for which they are developed is one of the measures to ensure satisfactory prediction performance of empirical equations.Adeyemi Emman Aladejare 2020Journal of Rock Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering2020,12,2:4

4Cardiac amyloidosis: A case report and review of literature显示文摘BACKGROUND Cardiac amyloidosis,a disease caused by the precipitation of amyloid proteins in the myocardial extracellular matrix has been historically difficult to diagnose due to lack of specific clinical manifestations and necessity of biopsy to demonstrate amyloid deposition. However,advances in cardiovascular imaging techniques have facilitated earlier recognition of this disease. In addition,while once thought of as incurable,treatment strategies are emerging for cardiac amyloidosis,making early diagnosis essential.CASE SUMMARY We outline the case of a 73 years old African American female who was admitted with sudden onset shortness of breath and found to be in cardiogenic shock.Cardiac amyloidosis was suspected due to discordance between electrocardiogram and echocardiogram findings and this was subsequently confirmed with the aid of scintigraphy and an endomyocardial biopsy.CONCLUSION Our objective is to highlight the diagnostic evaluation and clinical implications of cardiac amyloidosis.Adeyemi Adedamola Taiwo Lavanya Alapati Assad Movahed 2019World Journal of Clinical Cases2019,7,6:3
5Anticancer potential of metabolic compounds from marine actinomycetes isolated from Lagos Lagoon sediment显示文摘Thirty-two actinomycetes strains were isolated from sediment samples from 12 different sites at Lagos Lagoon and identified using standard physiological and biochemical procedures as well as 16S rDNA gene sequence analysis. Secondary metabolites were extracted from the strains and their anticancer activity on the K562 (Human acute myelocytic leukemia), HeLa (cervical carcinoma), AGS (Human gastric), MCF- 7 (breast adenocarcinoma) and HL-60 (Human acute promyelocytic leukemia) cell lines was determined. The metabolic extracts exhibited cytotoxicity with IC50 values ranging from 0.030 mg/mL to 4.4 mg/mL. The Streptomyces bingchenggensis ULS14 extract was cytotoxic against all the cell lines tested. The bioactivity-guided extraction and purification of the metabolic extracts from this strain yielded two purified anticancer compounds: ULDF4 and ULDF5. The structures of the extracted compounds were determined using spectroscopic analyses, including electrospray ionization mass spectrophotometer and nuclear magnetic resonance (1 Dimensional and 2 Dimensional), and were shown to be structurally similar to staurosporine and kigamicin. The IC50 of ULDF4 and ULDF5 against the HeLa cell line was 0.034 mg/mL and 0.075 mg/mL, respectively. 9Hepatocurative potential of Vitex doniana root bark,stem bark and leaves extracts against CCl_4-induced liver damage in rats显示文摘Objective:To evaluate the hepatocurative effects of aqueous root bark,stem bark and leaves of Vitex doniana in carbon tetrachloride(CCl_4)induced liver damage and non induced liver damage albino rats.Methods:A total of 60 albino rats(36 induced liver damage and 24 non induced liver damage)were assigned into liver damage and non liver damage groups of 6 rats in a group.The animals in the CCl_4 induced liver damage groups,were induced by intraperitoneal injection with a single dose of CCl_4(1 mL/kg body weight)as a 1:1(v/v)solution in olive oil and were fasted for 36 h before the subsequent treatment with aqueous root bark,stem bark and leaves extracts of Vitex doniana and vitamin E as standard drug(100 mg/kg body weight per day)for 21 d,while the animals in the non induced groups were only treated with the daily oral administration of these extracts at the same dose.The administration of CCl_4 was done once a week for a period of 3 weeks.Results:There was significant(P<0.05)increase in concentration of all liver marker enzymes,alanine aminotransferase,aspartate aminotransferase and alkaline aminotransferase(ALT,AST and ALP)and significant(P<0.05)decrease in albumin in the CCl_4 induced liver damage control when compared to the normal control.The extracts caused a significant(P<0.05)reduction in the serum activities of liver marker enzymes(ALT,AST and ALP)and a significant(P<0.05)increase in albumin of all the induced treated groups.Only stem bark extract and vitamin E significantly(P<0.05)increased total prolein.All the extracts significantly(P<0.05)lowered serum creatinine whereas only root bark extract significantly(P<0.05)lowered serum level of urea in the rats with CCl_4 induced liver damage.Conclusion:Hepatocurative study shows that all the plant parts(root bark,stem bark and leaves)possess significant hepatocurative properties among other therapeutic values justifying their use in folklore medicine.James Dorcas Bolanle Kadejo Olubukola Adetoro Sallau Abdullahi Balarabe Owolabi Olumuyiwa Adeyemi 2014Asian Pacific Journal of Tropical Biomedicine2014,4,6:2
