TRANSPORT OF THE SUSPENDED SEDIMENT IN THE CHANGJIANG ESTUARY显示文摘The Changjiang River is characterized by the enormous volume of runoff and the great amount of sediment load with remarkable seasonal variation. The annual runoff sometimes is respondent to the amount of sediment load, and sometimes not. The amount of monthly sediment load after the month of the maximum runoff is larger than those before the month. The sediment concentration and net quantity of sediment transport in the vicinity of the river mouth varies greatly in time between the ebb and flood, spring and neap, and dry seasons and flood seasons. The three bifurcations also have differences in concentration and net quantity in space. Even in the same bifurcation they have differences in and out of the sand bar. At present, the North Channel is the main passage for water and sediment load emptying into the sea from the Changjiang River. More than 50 percent of the sediments from the river basin are deposited nearby the South Branch entrance and the main depositional area is situated in subaqueous delta off the South Channel. Between 122°30’E and 123°E is an important boundary for eastward sediment dispersion from which the suspended sediment are dispersed towards the east by south. | SHEN Huanting Institute of Esturaine and Coastal Research, East China Normal University, Shanghai, China LI Jiufa Institute of Esturaine and Coastal Research, East China Normal University, Shanghai, China ZHU Huifang Institute of Esturaine and Coastal Research, East China Normal University, Shanghai, China HAN Mingbao Institute of Esturaine and Coastal Research, East China Normal University, Shanghai, China ZHOU Fugen Department of Marine Geology, Tongji Univcrsity, Shanghai, China | 1992 | International Journal of Sediment Research1992,7,3: | 37
Variability in rainfall threshold for debris flow after the Chi-Chi earthquake in central Taiwan,China显示文摘The purpose of this study is to analyze variability in rainfall threshold for debris flow(critical rainfall for debris flow triggering) after the ML 7.3 Chi-Chi earthquake in central Taiwan in 1999. Two study sites with different geological conditions were surveyed in the earthquake area. Streambed surveys were conducted to continuously monitor debris flows between 1999 and 2006. During the 7-year study period, every debris flow event was identified, and the streambed characterized. Results show that the rainfall threshold for debris flow was remarkably lower just after the Chi-Chi Earthquake, but gradually recovered. To date, this rainfall threshold is still lower than the original level prior to the earthquake. This variability in rainfall threshold is closely related to the amount of sediment material in the initiation area of debris flow, which increased rapidly due to landslides resulting from the earthquake. With the increase in sediment material, the rainfall threshold was lowered severely during the first year following the Chi-Chi earthquake. However, heavy rainfalls mobilized the sediment material, causing debris flows and transporting sediment downstream. With the decrease in sediment material, the rainfall threshold recovered gradually over time. Furthermore, debris flows occurred only in the subbasins that had sufficient sediment material to cause significant movement. Hence, these results confirm that the sediment material in the initiation area of debris flow is a crucial component of the rainfall threshold for debris flow. | C. L. SHIEH Y. S. CHEN Y. J. TSAI J. | 3 | Sediment pollution and its effect on fish through food chain in the Yangtze River显示文摘Suspended sediment adsorbs pollutants from flowing water in rivers and deposits onto the bed. However, the pollutants accumulated in the river bed sediment may affect the bio-community through food chain for a long period of time. To study the problem the concentration of heavy metals (Cr, Cd, Hg, Cu, Fe, Zn, Pb and As) in water, sediment, and fish/invertebrate were investigated in the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River during 2006-2007. The concentrations of heavy metals were 100-10,000 times higher in the sediment than in the water. Benthic invertebrates had relatively high concentrations of heavy metals in their tissues due to their proximity to contaminated sediments. Benthic invertivore fish had moderately high concentrations of heavy metals whereas phytoplanktivore fish, such as the silver carp, accumulated the lowest concentration of heavy metals. The concentrations of Cu, Zn, and Fe were higher than Hg, Pb, Cd, Cr, and As in the tissue samples. The concentration of heavy metals was lower in the river sediments than in the lake sediments. Conversely, the concentration of heavy metals was higher in river water than in lake water. While a pollution event into a water body is often transitory, the effects of the pollutants may be long-lived due to their tendency to be absorbed in the sediments and then released into the food chain. The heavy metals were concentrated in the following order: bottom material > demersal fish and benthic fauna > middle-lower layer fish > upper-middle layer fish > water. | Yujun YI Zhaoyin WANG Kang ZHANG Guoan YU Xuehua DUAN | 2008 | International Journal of Sediment Research2008,23,4: | 34
Phosphorus forms and distribution in the sediments of Poyang Lake,China显示文摘The forms and distribution of phosphorus in the sediments of Poyang Lake were studied using chemical extraction methods to understand the potential release and adsorption of phosphorus. The results showed that phosphorus in the sediments mainly consisted of inorganic phosphorous species, including iron bound phosphorus, calcium bound phosphorus, aluminium bound phosphorus and dissolved phosphorus,as well as organic phosphorous species. The spatial distribution of phosphorus species in surface sediments showed a decreasing trend from the outlet to the entrance of Poyang Lake. The content of total phosphorus in the surface sediments ranged from 688.29 to 825.36 mg/kg, and inorganic phosphorous was the major phosphorus species.Iron bound phosphorus was the dominant form of inorganic phosphorous, accounting for greater than 40%of the total phosphorus, while calcium bound phosphorus and aluminium bound phosphorus accounted for more than 20%, and dissolved phosphorus accounted for less than 5%.The content of organic phosphorus in surface sediments was lower, accounting for less than 15%.Total phosphorus was positively correlated with iron bound phosphorus, aluminium bound phosphorus, calcium bound phosphorus and organic phosphorous, while organic phosphorous was positively correlated with iron bound phosphorus and aluminium bound phosphorus, but only weakly related to calcium bound phosphorus. For all six sites, the contents of total phosphorus and phosphorus forms in the core sediments obviously decreased with depth, while they were significantly enriched in the surface sediments. The total phosphorus and phosphorus forms contents were significantly higher in the upper layers and had a tendency to decrease toward the bottom of the core, regardless of the phosphorus species. In addition, the average contents of total phosphorus and various phosphorus forms decreased rapidly with sediment depth from 0-20 cm,and then decreased slightly from 20-30 cm. | XIANG Su-lin ZHOU Wen-bin | 2011 | International Journal of Sediment Research2011,26,2: | 31
One-dimensional numerical simulation of non-uniform sediment transport under unsteady flows显示文摘One-dimensional numerical models are popularly used in sediment transport research because they can be easily programmed and cost less time compared with two-and three-dimensional numerical models. In particular, they possess greater capacity to be applied in large river basins with many tributaries. This paper presents a one-dimensional numerical model capable of calculating total-load sediment transport. The cross-section-averaged sediment transport capacity and recovery coefficient are addressed in the suspended load model. This one-dimensional model, therefore, can be applied to fine suspended loads and to hyperconcentrated flows in the Yellow River. Moreover,a new discretization scheme for the equation of unsteady non-uniform suspended sediment transport is proposed. The model is calibrated using data measured from the Yantan Reservoir on the Hongshui River and the Sanmenxia Reservoir on the Yellow River.A comparison of the calculated water level and river bed deformation with field measurements shows that the improved numerical model is capable of predicting flow, sediment transport, bed changes, and bed-material sorting in various situations, with reasonable accuracy and reliability. | Hongwei FANG Minghong CHEN Qianhai CHEN | 2008 | International Journal of Sediment Research2008,23,4: | 24

U.S. GEOLOGICAL SURVEY PROGRAMS AND INVESTIGATIONS RELATED TO SOIL AND WATER CONSERVATION显示文摘The U.S. Geological Survey has a rich tradition of collecting hydrologic data, especially for fluxes of water and suspended sediment, that provide a foundation for studies of soil and water conservation. Applied and basic research has included investigations of the effects of land use on rangelands, croplands, and forests; hazards mapping; derivation of flood and drought frequency, and other statistics related to streamflow and reservoir storage; development and application of models of rainfall-runoff relations, chemical quality, and sediment movement; and studies of the interactive processes of overland and channel flow with vegetation. Networks of streamgaging stations and (or) sampling sites within numerous drainage basins are yielding information that extends databases and enhances the ability to use those data for interpretive studies. | W. | 9 | Numerical modeling of tidal currents, sediment transport and morphological evolution in Hangzhou Bay,China显示文摘A 2D depth-averaged numerical model is set up to simulate the macro-scale hydrodynamic characteristics, sediment transport patterns and morphological evolution in Hangzhou Bay,a large macro-tidal estuary on the eastern coast of China.By incorporating the shallow water equations, the suspended sediment transport equation and the mass-balance equation for sediment;short-term hydrodynamics, sediment transport and long-term morphological evolution for Hangzhou Bay are simulated and the underlying physical mechanisms are analyzed. The model reproduces the spatial distribution patterns of suspended sediment concentration(SSC) in Hangzhou Bay,characterized by three high SSC zones and two low SSC zones. It also correctly simulates the residual flow, the residual sediment transport and the sediment accumulation patterns in Hangzhou Bay.The model results are in agreement with previous studies based on field measurements. The residual flow and the residual sediment transport are landwards directed in the northern part of the bay and seawards directed in the southern part.Sediment accumulation takes place in most areas of the bay.Harmonic analysis revealed that the tide is flood-dominant in the northern part of the bay and ebb-dominant in the southern part of the bay.The strength of the flood-dominance increases landwards along the northern Hangzhoii Bay.In turn sediment transport in Hangzhou Bay is controlled by this tidal asymmetry pattern. In addition, the direction of tidal propagation in the East China Sea,the presence of the archipelago in the southeast and the funnel-shaped geometry of the bay, play important roles for the patterns of sediment transport and sediment accumulation respectively. | Dong-feng XIE Shu GAO Zheng-bing WANG Cun-hong PAN | 2013 | International Journal of Sediment Research2013,28,3: | 23
Effects of precipitation and landuse on runoff during the past 50 years in a typical watershed in the Loess Plateau, China显示文摘In the past century, great progress has been made worldwide in our understanding of forest-water relationship. The successful forestation programs implemented in China-which have improved the ecological environmental conditions-have gained the attention of many researchers and highlighted the relationship between forestation and water yields. The arid and semi-arid Loess Plateau has received attention from water engineers and eco-hydrological researchers in China because of a shortage in water resources. We selected one of the oldest stations conducting soil and water conservation experiments, the Xifeng soil and water conservation station, and chose the Nanxiaohe catchment and its paired catchments (Yangjiagou catchment and Dongzhuanggou catchment) as our research areas. Trends in precipitation, air temperature, streamflow over the past 50 years, and the effect of changing land use on streamflow were analyzed. The Mann-Kendall test showed that precipitation had a negative trend (downward trend), whereas air temperature showed a positive trend (upward trend) from the past to present in the Nanxiaohe catchment. However, the trends seen in precipitation, air temperature did not contain any 'jumping points.' The paired catchment approach is used to detect the effects of land cover change on hydrology in the Yangjiagou and the contrast catchment, i.e., Dongzhuanggou catchment in our study. The results showed a large change in land use in the Yangjiagou catchment from 1954 to 2008. An increase in forested land (from 0% to 40.08% from 1954 to 2008) and a reduction of bare land (from 51.26% to 5.50% from 1954 to 2008) accounted for a large part of the change in land use. However, the land use changed little in the contrast catchment. The comparison of streamflow in the paired catchments showed that forestation reduced streamflow by 49.63% (or 6.5 mm) each year. | Huaxing BI Bin LIU Jie WU Lei YUN Zhihan CHEN Zhewei CUI | 2009 | International Journal of Sediment Research2009,24,3: | 21
Effects of landuse change on surface runoff and sediment yield at different watershed scales on the Loess Plateau显示文摘Erosion and sediment yield from large and small watersheds exhibit different laws. Variations in surface runoff and sediment yield because of landuse change in four watersheds of different scales from 1 km2 to 73 km2 were analyzed. Due to reforestation and farmland terracing, surface runoff and sediment yield reduced by 20-100% and 10-100% respectively. Reductions in surface runoff were differed significantly under different precipitation regimes. For the large watershed (73 km2) landuse change had similar effects on surface runoff regardless of changing of precipitation. For the small watershed (1 km2) landuse change had fewer effects on surface runoff under high precipitation. The relative changes of sediment yield in the four watersheds under reforestation and farmland terracing decreased as precipitation increased from 350 mm to 650 mm, then increased as precipitation increased from 650 mm to 870 mm. Where initial forest coverage rate was below 45%, sediment yield decreased dramatically as forest coverage rate increased. Watershed management with aiming at reducing both surface runoff and sediment yield should be conducted both on sloping surfaces and in channels in large watersheds. | ZHANG Xiaoming CAO Wenhong GUO Qingchao WU Sihong | 2010 | International Journal of Sediment Research2010,25,3: | 20

GIS-based risk analysis of debris flow:an application in Sichuan, southwest China显示文摘Debris flow is a serious geologic hazard in China. It is estimated that nationally debris flows cause up to 2 billion RMB(250 million US$) in damages and 300-600 deaths and injuries annually. To mitigate debris flow hazards,it is necessary to map, model, and identify zones of debris flow hazards and vulnerability as to inform the local people about the potential risk with a geographic information system. This research presents a regional scale case study modeling debris flow risk(hazard and vulnerability) in Sichuan Province,Southwestern China. In this area,3,290 debris flows have been identified and the spatial-temporal distribution and activity characteristics of them have been documented.Based on the available meteorological data,a Digital Elevation Model with the rate of 1:250,000 and a regional geological map,the 24-hr rainfall threshold(y) for debris flow occurrence is closely related(significant at 99% confidence level) to the index(x) defined using a geology factor(rock hardness:a) and a topographical factor(channel gradient:d) where y = 21 + 10200 / x,in which x = 2.7 × ea + 1000 × d.The discipline is constructive in developing the rainfall threshold for debris flow activity in remote mountainous areas that lack data. For a given watershed,a four-level debris flow hazard map is developed by comparing the rainfall threshold to the design rainfall intensities with 50-,20-,and 5-year average recurrence intervals, respectively. The degree of debris flow vulnerability is determined by the watershed socio-economic conditions.A four-class debris flow risk map,at the final phase of the research,is generated by combining debris flow hazards and vulnerability. With the debris flow risk assessment, the Sichuan Province is classified into the slight, moderate, severe and very severe regions, which accounts for 36%,19%,20% and 25% of total area respectively. | B. | 14 | SEDIMENT TRANSPORTED BY DEBRIS FLOWTO THE LOWER JINSHA RIVER显示文摘The lower Jinsha River is an area with the highest sediment yield in the upper Yangze basin. Itcovers only 9.27% of the total area of the basin but supplies about 40% of the total sediment recordedat the Yichang Hydrological Station. The present study shows that besides strong slope erosion andwaste discharge from engineering works, debris-flow transport is an important source of the sedimentload in the river. Based on field investigation and measurement, the annual sediment transport intothe lower Jinsha River basin was estimated at 1.54×10 to 67.07×10. | CUI Peng1 WEI Fangqiang2 and LI Yong3(1 Prof. Dongchuan Debris Flow Observation and Research Station. | 15 | Experimental study on scour and flow field in a scour hole around a T-shape spur dike in a 90° bend显示文摘In this paper results of experimental study on scour and flow field around a T-shape spur dike in a 90 degree channel bend are presented. Experiments were conducted in a laboratory channel to measure the variations of bed topography under a clear water condition. The three dimensional flow field was measured by an Acoustic Doppler Velocimeter in a scour hole due to a T-shape spur dike. It was found that by increasing the Froude number and length of spur dike the amount of scour increases. Increasing the wing length of spur dike decreases the scour. The amount of scour at the upstream of spur dike is much more as compare to that at the downstream of spur dike. By increasing the wing length of spur dike the zone of flow separation expands. As a result the sizes of vortex increase. Details of flow field are also addressed in the paper. | Masoud GHODSIAN Mohammad VAGHEFI | 2009 | International Journal of Sediment Research2009,24,2: | 19
Simulated multi-scale watershed runoff and sediment production based on GeoWEPP model显示文摘The runoff and sediment yield data from the Qiaozidonggou, Qiaozixigou, and Lu'ergou watersheds, in the Loess Plateau of China are used to calibrate and validate the runoff and sediment yield simulated by GeoWEPP model of the WEPP Model at watershed scale. The indices of relative error, R, correlation coefficient, R 2 , and Nash-Suttcliffe efficiency coefficient En s are used to evaluate the model fit. The eco-hydrological responses in the Luoyugou and Lu'ergou watersheds are also forecast based on the WEPP Model. Meanwhile, the relation between vegetation pattern changes and sediment yield in the watershed is discussed, and the responses of runoff and sediment yield in the watersheds concerning forest growth stages are studied. The results show that the relative errors of simulated values of runoff and sediment yield are below 30%, the correlation coefficients are above 0.90, and the Nash-Suttcliffe efficiency coefficients are above 0.80. The simulation results present satisfactory performance, thus, the model could be used to simulate the runoff and sediment yield in these small watersheds. It is also observed that soil erosion tended to become severe as precipitation increased in the watershed, while soil erosion has a decreasing trend as forest cover increases and vegetation pattern is optimized. When the watershed is fully covered by forest, erosion and sediment yield are minimized. When the forest cover is about 30% and evenly distributed in the watershed, the erosion intensity is lower than if the forest cover is collectively distributed in the watershed. Erosion varies with different forest growth stages in the watershed; it is more serious at the young and near planting stage and is the smallest at the mature forest stage. | YU Xinxiao ZHANG Xiaoming NIU Lili | 2009 | International Journal of Sediment Research2009,24,4: | 18
A review of ecological restoration techniques in fluvial rivers显示文摘Rivers play an important role in people's living and agricultural production, however, intense human activities have broken the original ecological balance, and affected structures and functions of the river ecosystem. To restore the damaged river ecosystem back to a healthy status, effective ecological restoration measures need to be implemented. The main problems that the damaged rivers face are either the locally altered hydrological processes affected by construction of hydraulic facilities,or the deterioration of water quality resulted from pollution emissions,or both.In this study, ecological restoration techniques of the rivers affected by engineering control or pollution are reviewed respectively. In addition, three kinds of methods,i.e.physical,chemical and biological-ecological methods are introduced in details for the rivers affected by water pollution. At present, the development of river restoration techniques shows the following trends:1) the scale of ecological restoration is becoming larger;2) ecological restoration measures are required to meet multiple objectives;and 3) the management of water environment is changing from water quality management to aquatic ecosystem management. | Baozhu Pan Jianping Yuan Xinhua Zhang Zhaoyin Wang Jiao Chen Jinyou Lu Wenjun Yang Zhiwei Li Na Zhao Mengzhen Xu | 2016 | International Journal of Sediment Research2016,31,2: | 18
WATER POLLUTION IN THE RIVER MOUTHS AROUND BOHAI BAY显示文摘Twelve water samples were collected and analyzed. The samples were taken from the river mouths around Bohai Bay including the Jiyun, New Yongding, Haihe, Dagu, Duliujian, Qingjinghuang, Qikou, Dakou, and Yellow Rivers, and tested for concentrations of heavy metals, arsenic, total nitrogen (TN) and total phosphorus (TP). The results show that the river mouths are polluted and the water quality exceeds Class V of the Environmental Quality Standard for Surface Water (EQSSW). The main pollutants are Hg, nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P). The concentrations of the other pollutants are within Class Ⅱ of the Standard. The Hg content in the Haihe River mouth is now 10 times higher than it was 20 years ago, indicating that the accelerating water pollution has reached an alarming level. The high concentrations of N and P cause eutrophication of the waters.Analysis indicates that the terrestrial pollutants and nutrients are the main cause of frequently occurring red tides in the Bohai Sea. | Cheng LIU, Zhao-Yin WANG and Yun HE Dr., Asso. | 19 | DEVELOPMENT OF STEP-POOL SEQUENCE AND ITS EFFECTS IN RESISTANCE AND STREAM BED STABILITY显示文摘Experiments were conducted and field investigations were performed to study the development of step-pool sequence and its effects on resistance to the flow and stream bed stability. Step-pool sequence develops in incised channels as a result of streambed erosion, which is compared with sand dunes and armor layer of the role in resistance and streambed protection. The tight interlocking of particles in steps gives them an inherent stability which only extreme floods are likely to disturb. That stability suggests that step-pools are a valid equilibrium form, especially when coupled with their apparent regularity form and their role in satisfying the extreme condition of resistance maximization. The development degree of step-pools, SP, is proportional to the streambed slope. If the incoming sediment load is equal to or more than the sediment-carrying capacity of the flow, there is no bed erosion and thence there are no step-pools. Ifthe flow depth increases and is over the step-height the resistance caused by the step-pool sequence will be greatly reduced. The rate of energy dissipation by step-pools is a function of SP. The higher is SP, the larger is the rate of energy dissipation. The step-pool sequence increases the resistance and flow depth, reduces the shear stress of the flow and protects the streambed from erosion. Moreover,step-pool sequence provides ecologically sound habitats for aquatic bio-community as well. | Zhao-YinWANG JiangXU ChangzhiLI | 2004 | International Journal of Sediment Research2004,19,3: | 18
Experiment and simulation of turbulent flow in local scour around a spur dyke显示文摘The turbulent flow in the local scour hole around a single non-submerged spur dyke is investigated with both experimental and numerical methods. The experiments are conducted under clear-water scour regime with an impermeable spur dyke. The scour geometry and flow velocities are measured in details with a high-resolution laser displacement meter,electro-magnetic velocimetries and PIV(Particle image velocimetry). A 3D non-linear k-ε model is developed to simulate the complex local flow field around the scour area. The numerical model is formulated using FVM(Finite volume method) on a collocated unstructured mesh, capable of resolving complex geometries and boundaries. It is found that the simulation results are reasonably consistent with those of the experimental measurements. Based on the study results, the nature of the flow structure around a spur dyke with local scour hole is analyzed. | Hao ZHANG Hajime NAKAGAWA Kenji KAWAIKE Yasuyuld BABA | 2009 | International Journal of Sediment Research2009,24,1: | 17
