Emotion processing in Parkinson's disease: a blood oxygenation level-dependent functional magnetic resonance imaging study显示文摘Parkinson's disease is a neurodegenerative disorder caused by loss of dopamine neurons in the substantia nigra pars compacta. Tremor, rigidity, and bradykinesia are the major symptoms of the disease. These motor impairments are often accompanied by affective and emotional dysfunctions which have been largely studied over the last decade. The aim of this study was to investigate emotional processing organization in the brain of patients with Parkinson's disease and to explore whether there are differences between recognition of different types of emotions in Parkinson's disease. We examined 18 patients with Parkinson's disease(8 men, 10 women) with no history of neurological or psychiatric comorbidities. All these patients underwent identical brain blood oxygenation level-dependent functional magnetic resonance imaging for emotion evaluation. Blood oxygenation level-dependent functional magnetic resonance imaging results revealed that the occipito-temporal cortices, insula, orbitofrontal cortex, basal ganglia, and parietal cortex which are involved in emotion processing, were activated during the functional control. Additionally, positive emotions activate larger volumes of the same anatomical entities than neutral and negative emotions. Results also revealed that Parkinson's disease associated with emotional disorders are increasingly recognized as disabling as classic motor symptoms. These findings help clinical physicians to recognize the emotional dysfunction of patients with Parkinson's disease. | Mohammed Benzagmout Sa?d Boujraf Badreeddine Alami Hassane Ali Amadou Halima El Hamdaoui Amine Bennani Mounir Jaafari Ismail Rammouz Mustapha Maaroufi Rabia Magoul Driss Boussaoud | 2019 | Neural Regeneration Research2019,14,4: | 6
Semi-supervised Ladder Networks for Speech Emotion Recognition显示文摘As a major component of speech signal processing, speech emotion recognition has become increasingly essential to understanding human communication. Benefitting from deep learning, many researchers have proposed various unsupervised models to extract effective emotional features and supervised models to train emotion recognition systems. In this paper, we utilize semi-supervised ladder networks for speech emotion recognition. The model is trained by minimizing the supervised loss and auxiliary unsupervised cost function. The addition of the unsupervised auxiliary task provides powerful discriminative representations of the input features, and is also regarded as the regularization of the emotional supervised task. We also compare the ladder network with other classical autoencoder structures. The experiments were conducted on the interactive emotional dyadic motion capture (IEMOCAP) database, and the results reveal that the proposed methods achieve superior performance with a small number of labelled data and achieves better performance than other methods. | Jian-Hua Tao Jian Huang Ya Li Zheng Lian Ming-Yue Niu | 2019 | International Journal of Automation and computing2019,16,4: | 6
Psychological aspects of diabetes care: Effecting behavioral change in patients显示文摘Patients with diabetes mellitus(DM) need psychological support throughout their life span from the time of diagnosis. The psychological make-up of the patients with DM play a central role in self-management behaviors. Without patient's adherence to the effective therapies, there would be persistent sub-optimal contro of diseases, increase diabetes-related complications, causing deterioration in quality of life, resulting in increased healthcare utilization and burden on healthcare systems. However, provision of psychosocial support is generally inadequate due to its challenging nature of needs and demands on the healthcare systems. This review article examines patient's psychological aspects in general, elaborates in particular about emotion effects on health, and emotion in relation to other psychological domains such as cognition, self-regulation,self-efficacy and behavior. Some descriptions are also provided on willpower, resilience, illness perception and proactive coping in relating execution of new behaviors, coping with future-oriented thinking and influences of illness perception on health-related behaviors. These psychological aspects are further discussed in relationto DM and interventions for patients with DM. Equipped with the understanding of the pertinent nature of psychology in patients with DM; and knowing the links between the psychological disorders, inflammation and cardiovascular outcomes would hopefully encourages healthcare professionals in giving due attention to the psychological needs of patients with DM. | Boon-How Chew Sazlina Shariff-Ghazali Aaron Fernandez | 2014 | World Journal of Diabetes2014,5,6: | 5
Illuminating the Activated Brain: Emerging Activity-Dependent Tools to Capture and Control Functional Neural Circuits显示文摘Immediate-early genes(IEGs) have long been used to visualize neural activations induced by sensory and behavioral stimuli. Recent advances in imaging techniques have made it possible to use endogenous IEG signals to visualize and discriminate neural ensembles activated by multiple stimuli, and to map whole-brain-scale neural activation at single-neuron resolution. In addition, a collection of IEG-dependent molecular tools has been developed that can be used to complement the labeling of endogenous IEG genes and, especially, to manipulate activated neural ensembles in order to reveal the circuits and mechanisms underlying different behaviors. Here, we review these techniques and tools in terms of their utility in studying functional neural circuits. In addition, we provide an experimental strategy to measure the signal-to-noise ratio of IEG-dependent molecular tools, for evaluating their suitability for investigating relevant circuits and behaviors. | Qiye He Jihua Wang Hailan Hu | 2019 | Neuroscience Bulletin2019,35,3: | 4
Music in depression: Neural correlates of emotional experience in remitted depression显示文摘AIM: To investigate neural and behavioral correlates of emotional experiences as potential vulnerability markers in remitted depression. METHODS: Fourteen remitted participants with a history of major depression and fourteen closely matched healthy control participants took part in the study. We used two psychiatric interviews(Hamilton Depression Rating Scale, Montgomery-Asberg Depression Rating Scale) and one self-report scale(Beck Depression Inventory) to assess remission. Healthy control participants were interviewed by an experienced psychiatrist to exclude those who showed any current or lifetime psychiatric or neurological disorders. To explore psychosocialand cognitive-interpersonal underpinnings of potential vulnerability markers of depression, early life stress, coping styles and alexithymia were also assessed. We induced pleasant and unpleasant emotional states using congruent combinations of music and human emotional faces to investigate neural and behavioral correlates of emotional experiences; neutral stimuli were used as a control condition. Brain responses were recorded using functional magnetic resonance imaging. Behavioral responses of pleasantness, arousal, joy and fear were measured via button-press inside the resonance imaging scanner. RESULTS: The mean age of the sample was 54.9(± 11.3) years. There were no differences between remitted depressed(RD)(n = 14; 9 females and 5 males) and healthy participants(n = 14; 8 females and 6 males) regarding age, current degree of depression, early life stress, coping styles and alexithymia. On a neural level, RD participants showed reduced activations in the pregenual anterior cingulate cortex(pg ACC) in response to pleasant [parameter estimates:-0.78 vs 0.32; t(26) =-3.41, P < 0.05] and unpleasant [parameter estimates:-0.88 vs 0.56; t(26)=-4.02, P < 0.05] emotional stimuli. Linear regression analysis revealed that pg ACC activity was modulated by early life stress [β =-0.48; R2 = 0.23, F(1,27) = 7.83, P < 0.01] and taskoriented coping style [β = 0.63; R2 = 0.37, F(1,27) = 16.91, P < 0.001]. Trait anxiety modulated hippocampal responses to unpleasant stimuli [β = 0.62; R2= 0.38, F(1,27) = 15.95, P < 0.001]. Interestingly, in their reported experiences of pleasantness, arousal, happiness and fear in response to pleasant, unpleasant and neutral stimuli, RD participants did not differ significantly from healthy control participants. Adding trait anxiety or alexithymia as a covariate did not change the results.CONCLUSION: The present study indicates that, in euthymic individuals, depression history alters neural correlates, but not the subjective dimension of pleasant and unpleasant emotional experiences. | Sabine Aust Karin Filip Stefan Koelsch Simone Grimm Malek Bajbouj | 2013 | World Journal of Psychiatry2013,3,2: | 3

Empathizing with Emotional Robot Based on Cognition Reappraisal显示文摘This paper proposes a continuous cognitive emotional regulation model for robot in the case of external emotional stimulus from interactive person's expressions. It integrates a guiding cognitive reappraisal strategy into the HMM(Hidden Markov Model) emotional interactive model for empathizing between robot and person. The emotion is considered as a source in the 3D space(Arousal, Valence, and Stance). State transition and emotion intensity can be quantitatively analyzed in the continuous space. This cognition-emotion interactive model have been verified by the expression and behavior robot. Empathizing is the main distinguishing feature of our work, and it is realized by the emotional regulation which operated in a continuous 3D emotional space enabling a wide range of intermediate emotions. The experiment results provide evidence with acceptability, accuracy, richness, fluency, interestingness, friendliness and exaggeration that the robot with cognition and emotional control ability could be better accepted in the human-robot interaction(HRI). | Xin Liu Lun Xie Zhiliang Wang | 2017 | China Communications2017,14,9: | 3
Improved Social Emotion Optimization Algorithm for Short-Term Traffic Flow Forecasting Based on Back-Propagation Neural Network显示文摘The back-propagation neural network(BPNN) is a well-known multi-layer feed-forward neural network which is trained by the error reverse propagation algorithm. It is very suitable for the complex of short-term traffic flow forecasting; however, BPNN is easy to fall into local optimum and slow convergence. In order to overcome these deficiencies, a new approach called social emotion optimization algorithm(SEOA) is proposed in this paper to optimize the linked weights and thresholds of BPNN. Each individual in SEOA represents a BPNN. The availability of the proposed forecasting models is proved with the actual traffic flow data of the 2 nd Ring Road of Beijing. Experiment of results show that the forecasting accuracy of SEOA is improved obviously as compared with the accuracy of particle swarm optimization back-propagation(PSOBP) and simulated annealing particle swarm optimization back-propagation(SAPSOBP) models. Furthermore, since SEOA does not respond to the negative feedback information, Metropolis rule is proposed to give consideration to both positive and negative feedback information and diversify the adjustment methods. The modified BPNN model, in comparison with social emotion optimization back-propagation(SEOBP) model, is more advantageous to search the global optimal solution. The accuracy of Metropolis rule social emotion optimization back-propagation(MRSEOBP) model is improved about 19.54% as compared with that of SEOBP model in predicting the dramatically changing data. | 张军 赵申卫 王远强 朱新山 | 2019 | Journal of Shanghai Jiaotong university(Science)2019,24,2: | 3
Multimodal Emotion Recognition with Transfer Learning of Deep Neural Network显示文摘Due to the lack of large-scale emotion databases,it is hard to obtain comparable improvement in multimodal emotion recognition of the deep neural network by deep learning, which has made great progress in other areas. We use transfer learning to improve its performance with pretrained models on largescale data.Audio is encoded using deep speech recognition networks with 500 hours’speech and video is encoded using convolutional neural networks with over 110,000 images. The extracted audio and visual features are fed into Long Short-Term Memory to train models respectively.Logistic regression and ensemble method are performed in decision level fusion. The experiment results indicate that 1)audio features extracted from deep speech recognition networks achieve better performance than handcrafted audio features;2)the visual emotion recognition obtains better performance than audio emotion recognition;3)the ensemble method gets better performance than logistic regression and prior knowledge from micro-F1 value further improves the performance and robustness, achieving accuracy of 67.00%for“happy”,54.90%for“an?gry”,and 51.69%for“sad”. | HUANG Jian LI Ya TAO Jianhua YI Jiangyan | 2017 | ZTE Communications2017,15,B12: | 2
Development of alexithymic personality features显示文摘The purpose of this paper is to review the current literature regarding the development of alexithymic personality features. Modern brain imaging technologies provide interesting data on the associations of alexithymia with different aberrations in brain function related to emotion regulation; however, the development of these deviations is poorly understood. A notable amount of research covers the relation of alexithymia to differentenvironmental factors. Many of these associations, for example, with low socio-economic status and general psychopathology in childhood, are well established. However, the retrospective and cross-sectional designs commonly used in these studies, as well as the use of self-report measures, hinder the ability to firmly establish causality. Certain individual developmental factors, such as lagging speech development and congenital cardiac malformations in childhood, have been associated with the development of alexithymia. Regarding the stability of alexithymia, a systematic review of the literature was conducted for this paper. In addition to being characterized as a personality feature in the general population, alexithymia also clearly has a state-like dimension that results in increases and decreases in alexithymic features in conjunction with mental disorder symptoms. An essential question is whether the alexithymic features in adulthood are, in fact, infantile features of a restricted ability to identify and describe emotions that simply persist in individuals through adolescence to adulthood. To firmly establish the roots of alexithymia development, longitudinal studies, particularly in younger populations, are needed. Furthermore, multifaceted study settings are encouraged. | Max Karukivi Simo Saarij?rvi | 2014 | World Journal of Psychiatry2014,4,4: | 2
Emotion Regulation Effect of Baduanjin on College Students:A Pilot Event-Related Potential Study on Late Positive Potential显示文摘Objective:This study aimed to investigate the emotion regulation effect of Baduanjin Qigong on college students. Methods:The late positive potential(LPP)components were recorded while performing emotional pictures from 12 college students with Baduanjin Qigong experience and 12 with no experience of any mind–body exercises. Results:Under positive emotional stimuli, greater LPP amplitudes were observed in the experimental group in the frontal, central, and temporal areas than in the control group.Under negative emotional stimuli, greater LPP amplitudes were found in the experimental group in the prefrontal area and smaller amplitudes in the occipital area than in the control group. Conclusion:The results reveal the emotion regulation effect on the event-related potential of Baduanjin Qigong to college students. The findings suggest that the regulatory effect of Baduanjin Qigong on emotional stimulation may be a possible reason for reducing the symptoms of depression and anxiety. | Qiang Gu Qing-Chuan Hu Yu-Long Wei Kevin Chen Jing-Jing Dong Shen-Yi Li Wei-Wei Wang Yi-Bin Zheng | 2021 | World Journal of Traditional Chinese Medicine2021,7,4: | 2
Novel acoustic features for speech emotion recognition显示文摘This paper focuses on acoustic features that effectively improve the recognition of emotion in human speech. The novel features in this paper are based on spectral-based entropy parameters such as fast Fourier transform(FFT) spectral entropy, delta FFT spectral entropy,Mel-frequency filter bank(MFB) spectral entropy, and Delta MFB spectral entropy.Spectral-based entropy features are simple. They reflect frequency characteristic and changing characteristic in frequency of speech. We implement an emotion rejection module using the probability distribution of recognized-scores and rejected-scores.This reduces the false recognition rate to improve overall performance.Recognized-scores and rejected-scores refer to probabilities of recognized and rejected emotion recognition results, respectively. These scores are first obtained from a pattern recognition procedure. The pattern recognition phase uses the Gaussian mixture model(GMM).We classify the four emotional states as anger, sadness, happiness and neutrality. The proposed method is evaluated using 45 sentences in each emotion for 30 subjects,15 males and 15 females.Experimental results show that the proposed method is superior to the existing emotion recognition methods based on GMM using energy,Zero Crossing Rate(ZCR),linear prediction coefficient(LPC),and pitch parameters. We demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed approach. One of the proposed features, combined MFB and delta MFB spectral entropy improves performance approximately 10% compared to the existing feature parameters for speech emotion recognition methods. We demonstrate a 4% performance improvement in the applied emotion rejection with low confidence score. | ROH Yong-Wan KIM Dong-Ju LEE Woo-Seok HONG Kwang-Seok | 2009 | Science China(Technological Sciences)2009,52,7: | 2
Facial emotion perception in schizophrenia: Does sex matter?显示文摘AIM: To review the literature on sex differences in facial emotion perception(FEP) across the schizophrenia spectrum. METHODS: We conducted a systematic review of empirical articles that were included in five separate meta-analyses of FEP across the schizophrenia spectrum, including meta-analyses that predominantly examined adults with chronic schizophrenia, people with early(onset prior to age 18) or recent-onset(experiencing their first or second psychotic episode or illness duration less than 2 years) schizophrenia, and unaffected first-degree relatives of people with schizophrenia. We also examined articles written in English(from November 2011 through June 2015) that were not included in the aforementioned metaanalyses through a literature search in the Pub Med database. All relevant articles were accessed in full text. We examined all studies to determine the sample sizes, diagnostic characteristics, demographic information, methodologies, results, and whether each individual study reported on sex differences. The results from the meta-analyses themselves as well as the individual studies are reported in tables and text. RESULTS: We retrieved 134 articles included in five separate meta-analyses and the Pub Med database that examined FEP across the schizophrenia spectrum. Of these articles, 38 examined sex differences in FEP. Thirty of these studies did not find sex differences in FEP in either chronically ill adults with schizophrenia, early-onset or recently diagnosed people with schizophrenia, or first-degree relatives of people with schizophrenia. Of the eight studies that found sex differences in FEP, three found that chronically ill women outperformed men, one study found that girls with early-onset schizophrenia outperformed boys, and two studies found that women(including first-degree relatives, adults with schizophrenia, and the healthy control group) outperformed men on FEP tasks. In total, six of the eight studies that examined sex differences in FEP found that women outperformed men across theschizophrenia spectrum. CONCLUSION: Evidence to date suggests few sex differences in FEP in schizophrenia; both men and women across the schizophrenia spectrum have deficits in FEP. | Jasmine Mote Ann M Kring | 2016 | World Journal of Psychiatry2016,6,2: | 2

What emotion dimensions can affect working memory performance in healthy adults?A review显示文摘Due to the critical roles of emotion and working memory in our daily activities,a great deal of attention has been given to how emotion influences working memory performance.Although the association between emotion and working memory is relatively well established, whether mood enhances or impairs working memory performance remains controversial. The present review provides a relatively representative overview of the research on the effect of different dimensions of emotion on working memory among healthy adults spanning a 30-year period. The findings show that the valence, arousal and motivational dimensions of emotion could all exert an impact on working memory performance. The impact of emotion on working memory might be modulated by task relevance, emotion type, working memory paradigms and individual differences. The vast majority of the studies regarding the effect of emotion on working memory performance focused on the impact of negatively valenced affect and yielded highly contradictory findings. The impacts of arousal and motivation on working memory have been less explored, and inconsistent findings have also been reported.Possible explanations are discussed.Considerable research on the effect of certain dimensions of emotion on working memory has suffered from a lack of control of other emotional dimensions, and different aspects of working memory have been investigated by various paradigms.Directions for further studies should include the exploration of specific dimensions of emotion on different aspects of working memory, with the other dimensions being well controlled. | Tian-Ya Hou Wen-Peng Cai | 2022 | World Journal of Clinical Cases2022,10,2: | 1
Review of the genetic basis of emotion dysregulation in children and adolescents显示文摘Previous evidence suggests that emotion dysregulation may have different biological correlates between adults and children/adolescents. Although the role of genetic factors has been extensively studied in adult-onset emotion dysregulation, the genetic basis for pediatriconset emotion dysregulation remains elusive. The current review article presents a summary of previous studies that have suggested a few genetic variants associated with pediatric emotion dysregulation. Among these candidate loci, many prior studies have been focused on serotonin transporter promoter gene polymorphism 5-HTTLPR. Certain alleles of the 5-HTTLPR gene polymorphism have been found to be associated with traits associated with emotion dysregulation, such as aggression, affect reactivity, and insecure attachment. Additionally, genetic variants involving dopamine and neurophysiological biomarkers like the COMT Val158Met(rs460) and dopamine receptor D2/ ankyrin repeat and kinase domain containing one polymorphisms may play a role in emotion dysregulation. Inconsistent findings have been noted, possibly due to the heterogeneity in study designs and characteristics of different populations. Further research on the role of genetic predetermination of emotion dysregulation in children and adolescents is warranted. | Drew Barzman Chelsea Geise Ping-I Lin | 2015 | World Journal of Psychiatry2015,5,1: | 1
Mapping Domain- and Age-Specific Functional Brain Activity for Children’s Cognitive and Affective Development显示文摘The human brain undergoes rapid development during childhood, with significant improvement in a wide spectrum of cognitive and affective functions.Mapping domain-and age-specific brain activity patterns has important implications for characterizing the development of children’s cognitive and affective functions. The current mainstay of brain templates is primarily derived from structural magnetic resonance imaging(MRI),and thus is not ideal for mapping children’s cognitive and affective brain development.By integrating task-dependent functional MRI data from a large sample of 250 children(aged 7 to 12)across multiple domains and the latest easy-to-use and transparent preprocessing workflow,we here created a set of age-specific brain functional activity maps across four domains:attention, executive function, emotion, and risky decision-making.Moreover,we developed a toolbox named Developmental Brain Functional Activity maps across multiple domains that enables researchers to visualize and download domain-and age-specific brain activity maps for various needs. This toolbox and maps have been released on the Neuroimaging Informatics Tools and Resources Clearinghouse website(http://gffzza9adc041c78b4b3bhqf090kokff5n6566.ffgz.tsg.suse.edu.cn/projects/dbfa).Our study provides domain-and age-specific brain activity maps for future developmental neuroimaging studies in both healthy and clinical populations. | Lei Hao Lei Li Menglu Chen Jiahua Xu Min Jiang Yanpei Wang Linhua Jiang Xu Chen Jiang Qiu Shuping Tan Jia-Hong Gao Yong He Sha Tao Qi Dong Shaozheng Qin | 2021 | Neuroscience Bulletin2021,37,6: | 1
