| 1 | Osteoarthritis:toward a comprehensive understanding of pathological mechanism显示文摘Osteoarthritis(OA) is the most common degenerative joint disease and a major cause of pain and disability in adult individuals. The etiology of OA includes joint injury, obesity, aging, and heredity. However, the detailed molecular mechanisms of OA initiation and progression remain poorly understood and, currently,there are no interventions available to restore degraded cartilage or decelerate disease progression. The diathrodial joint is a complicated organ and its function is to bear weight, perform physical activity and exhibit a joint-specific range of motion during movement. During OA development, the entire joint organ is affected, including articular cartilage, subchondral bone, synovial tissue and meniscus. | 6 | Prevalence of clonorchiasis in patients with gastrointestinal disease: A Korean nationwide multicenter survey显示文摘AIM: To investigate prevalence of Clonorchis sinensis in patients with gastrointestinal symptoms, and the relation of the infection to hepatobiliary diseases in 26 hospitals in Korea.METHODS: Consecutive patients who had been admitted to the Division of Gastroenterology with gastrointestinal symptoms were enrolled from March to April 2005. Of those who had been diagnosed with clonorchiasis, epidemiology and correlation between infection and hepatobiliary diseases were surveyed by questionnaire.RESULTS: Of 3080 patients with gastrointestinal diseases, 396 (12.9%) had clonorchiasis and 1140 patients (37.2%) had a history of eating raw freshwater fish. Of those with a history of raw freshwater fish ingestion, 238 (20.9%) patients had clonorchiasis. Cholangiocarcinoma was more prevalent in C. sinensis-infected patients than non-infected patients [34/396 (8.6%) vs 145/2684 (5.4%), P = 0.015]. Cholangiocarcinoma and clonorchiasis showed statistically significant positive cross-relation (P = 0.008). Choledocholithiasis, cholecystolithiasis, cholangitis, hepatocellular carcinoma, and biliary pancreatitis did not correlate with clonorchiasis.CONCLUSION: Infection rate of clonorchiasis was still high in patients with gastrointestinal diseases in Korea, and has not decreased very much during the last two decades. | 9 | Clinical analysis of risk factors contributing to recurrence of pterygium after excision and graft surgery显示文摘AIM: To find the risk factors related to the reproliferation of the pterygial tissue after excision and graft surgery.METHODS: Charts of 130 eyes of 130 patients who had pterygial excision from March 2006 to April 2011 were reviewed. Preoperative pterygium morphology, surgical methods, and adjunctive treatments were statistically analyzed for their relationship with recurrence.RESULTS: During the follow-up period, recurrence was observed in 20 eyes(15.4%). None of the preoperative morphologic features were affected the rate of the recurrence. However, an age <40y [P =0.085, odds ratio(OR) 3.609, 95% confidence interval(CI) 0.838-15.540]and amniotic membrane graft instead of conjunctival autograft(P =0.002, OR 9.093, 95% CI 2.316-35.698) were statistically significant risk factors for recurrence.Multivariate analysis revealed that intraoperative mitomycin C(MMC)(P =0.072, OR 0.298, 95% CI 0.080-1.115)decreased the rate of recurrence. CONCLUSION: Younger age is a risk factor for reproliferation of pterygial tissue after excision and amniotic membrane transplantation(AMT) are less effective in preventing recurrence of pterygium after excision based on the comparison between conjunctival autograft and AMT. | 10 | Long-term outcome in patients with obscure gastrointestinal bleeding after negative capsule endoscopy显示文摘AIM:To investigate long-term outcome in obscure gastrointestinal bleeding(OGIB) after negative capsule endoscopy(CE) and identify risk factors for rebleeding.METHODS:A total of 113 consecutive patients underwent CE for OGIB from May 2003 to June 2010 at Seoul National University Hospital.Ninety-five patients(84.1%) with a subsequent follow-up after CE of at least 6 mo were enrolled in this study.Follow-up data were obtained from the patients' medical records.The CE images were reviewed by two board-certified gastroenterologists and consensus diagnosis was used in all cases.The primary outcome measure was the detection of rebleeding after CE,and factors associated with rebleeding were evaluated using multivariate analysis.RESULTS:Of the 95 enrolled patients(median age 61 years,range 17-85 years),62 patients(65.3%) were male.The median duration of follow-up was 23.7 mo(range 6.0-89.4 mo).Seventy-three patients(76.8%) underwent CE for obscure-overt bleeding.Complete examination of the small bowel was achieved in 77 cases(81.1%).Significant lesions were found in 38 patients(40.0%).The overall rebleeding rate was 28.4%.The rebleeding rate was higher in patients with positive CE(36.8%) than in those with negative CE(22.8%).However,there was no significant difference in cumulative rebleeding rates between the two groups(log rank test;P = 0.205).Anticoagulation after CE examination was an independent risk factor for rebleeding(hazard ratio,5.019;95%CI,1.560-16.145;P = 0.007),regardless of CE results.CONCLUSION:Patients with OGIB and negative CE have a potential risk of rebleeding.Therefore,close observation is required and alternative modalities should be considered in suspicious cases. | Seong-Joon Koh Jong Pil Im Ji Won Kim Byeong Gwan Kim Kook Lae Lee Sang Gyun Kim Joo Sung Kim Hyun Chae Jung | 2013 | World Journal of Gastroenterology2013,19,10: | 12 |

| 12 | Efficacy of Saam acupuncture treatment on improvement of immune cell numbers in cancer patients:a pilot study显示文摘OBJECTIVE: To collect preliminary data on the effects of Saam acupuncture with regard to the immunity in cancer patients.METHODS: Ten cancer patients were analyzed for improvements in immunity. Acupuncture was applied at the 5 acupuncture points, Jingqu(LU 8), Zutonggu(BL 66), Yanggu(SI 5), Yangchi(TE 4), and Zhongwan(CV 12) for 2 weeks with 4 sessions. We assessed the effect of Korean Saam acupuncture on the immune system in cancer patients by measuring particular blood cell subsets, including CD3 +,CD4+, CD8+, CD19+, and CD56+ cells, as well as total white blood cell count, absolute neutrophil count, and fatigue score. The measurement was performed before and after acupuncture and at a 2-week follow-up.RESULTS: There was a statistically significant increase in the number of CD3+(P=0.023) and CD8+ cells(P<0.001) and T-cell subsets, as well as a decrease in the fatigue severity scale(FSS) score(P=0.001) after Saam acupuncture using the 5 acupoints.CONCLUSION: Acupuncture may improve the immune system by increasing the counts of a few immune cells and relieve fatigue in cancer patients by decreasing FSS scores. The Transient Rainfall Infiltration and Grid-based Regional Slope-stability (TRIGRS) model was used to investigate the rainfall-induced shallow landslides in a forested mountain region, Korea. Various input data for TRIGRS model include time-varying rainfall, topographic characteristics, soil depth, material strength, and hydraulic properties. A series of calculations were conducted in determining the slope stability over the Jangheung region in Korea during the storm occurred on August 6, 1998. The results show that TRIGRS model captured about 64.1% of landslides that were extracted from the IKONOS2 imageries. | 18 | Removal of primary iron rich phase from aluminum-silicon melt by centrifugal separation显示文摘Recycling is a major consideration in continued aluminum use due to the enormous demand for high quality products. Some impurity elements gradually accumulate through the repetitive reuse of aluminum alloy scrap. Of them, the iron content should be suppressed under the allowed limit. In the present research, a novel separation method was introduced to remove primary iron-rich intermetallic compounds by centrifugation during solidification of Al-Si-Fe alloys. This method does not use the density difference between two phases as in other centrifugal methods, but uses the order of solidification in Al-Si-Fe alloys, because iron promotes the formation of intermetallic compounds with other alloying elements as a primary phase. Two Al-Si-Fe alloys which have different iron contents were chosen as the starting materials. The iron-rich phase could be efficiently removed by centrifuging under a centrifugal force of 40 g. Coarse intermetallic compounds were found in the sample inside the crucible, while rather fine intermetallic compounds were found in the sample outside the crucible. Primary intermetallic compounds were linked to each other via aluminum-rich matrix, and formed like a network. The highest iron removal fraction is 67% and the lowest one is 7% for Al-12Si-1.7Fe alloy. | 20 | Micro RNA-124 slows down the progression of Huntington's disease by promoting neurogenesis in the striatum显示文摘Micro RNA-124 contributes to neurogenesis through regulating its targets,but its expression both in the brain of Huntington's disease mouse models and patients is decreased.However,the effects of micro RNA-124 on the progression of Huntington's disease have not been reported.Results from this study showed that micro RNA-124 increased the latency to fall for each R6/2 Huntington's disease transgenic mouse in the rotarod test.5-Bromo-2'-deoxyuridine(Brd U) staining of the striatum shows an increase in neurogenesis.In addition,brain-derived neurotrophic factor and peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor gamma coactivator 1-alpha protein levels in the striatum were increased and SRY-related HMG box transcription factor 9 protein level was decreased.These findings suggest that micro RNA-124 slows down the progression of Huntington's disease possibly through its important role in neuronal differentiation and survival. | Tian Liu Wooseok Im Inhee Mook-Jung Manho Kim | 2015 | Neural Regeneration Research2015,10,5: | 8 |
