| 1 | Distribution of heavy metals in sediments of the Pearl River Estuary,Southern China:Implications for sources and historical changes显示文摘The distribution of heavy metals(Pb,Zn,Cd and As) in sediments of the Pearl River Estuary was investigated.The spatial distribution of heavy metals displayed a decreasing pattern from the turbidity maxima to both upstream and downstream of the estuary,which suggested that suspended sediments played an important role in the trace metal distribution in the Pearl River Estuary.In addition,metal concentrations were higher in the west part of the estuary which received most of the pollutants from the Pearl River.In the sediment cores,fluxes of heavy metals were consistent with a predominant anthropogenic input in the period 1970-1990.From the mid-1990s to the 2000s,there was a significant decline in heavy metal pollution.The observed decline has shown the result of pollution control in the Pearl River Delta.However,it is noteworthy that the metal concentrations in the most recent sediment still remained considerably high.Taken together,the enrichment of heavy metals in sediments was largely controlled by anthropogenic pollution. | Feng Ye Xiaoping Huang Dawen Zhang Lei Tian Yanyi Zeng | 2012 | Journal of Environmental Sciences2012,24,4: | 18 |
| 2 | Combining sap flow measurement-based canopy stomatal conductance and ^(13)C discrimination to estimate forest carbon assimilation显示文摘The available methods for studying C uptake of forest and their problems in practices are reviewed, and a new approach to combining sap flow and 13C techniques is proposed in this paper. This approach, obtained through strict mathematic derivation, combines sap flow measure-ment-based canopy stomatal conductance and 13C discrimi-nation to estimate instantaneous carbon assimilation rate of a forest. Namely the mean canopy stomatal conductance (gc) acquired from accurate measurement of sap flux density is integrated with the relationship between 13C discrimination (?) and Ci/Ca (intercellular/ambient CO2 concentrations) and with that between Anet (net photosynthetic rate) and gCO2 (stomatal conductance for CO2) so that a new relation be-tween forest C uptake and ? as well as gc is established. | 3 | Newborn screening with targeted sequencing:a multicenter investigation and a pilot clinical study in China显示文摘Different newborn screening(NBS) programs have been practiced in many countries since the 1960 s. It is of considerable interest whether next-generation sequencing is applicable in NBS. We have developed a panel of 465 causative genes for 596 early-onset, relatively high incidence, and potentially actionable severe inherited diseases in our Newborn Screening with Targeted Sequencing(NESTS) program to screen 11,484 babies in 8 Women and Children’s hospitals nationwide in China retrospectively. The positive rate from preliminary screening of NESTS was 7.85%(902/11,484). With 45.89%(414/902) follow-up of preliminary positive cases, the overall clinically confirmative diagnosis rate of monogenic disorders was 12.07%(50/414), estimating an average of 0.95%(7.85% × 12.07%) clinical diagnosis rate, suggesting that monogenic disorders account for a considerable proportion of birth defects. The disease/gene spectrum varied in different regions of China. NESTS was implemented in a hospital by screening 3923 newborns to evaluate its clinical application. The turn-around time of a primary report, including the sequencing period of < 7 days, was within 11 days by our automatic interpretation pipeline. | 4 | Edge biomarkers for classification and prediction of phenotypes显示文摘In general,a disease manifests not from malfunction of individual molecules but from failure of the relevant system or network,which can be considered as a set of interactions or edges among molecules.Thus,instead of individual molecules,networks or edges are stable forms to reliably characterize complex diseases.This paper reviews both traditional node biomarkers and edge biomarkers,which have been newly proposed.These biomarkers are classified in terms of their contained information.In particular,we show that edge and network biomarkers provide novel ways of stably and reliably diagnosing the disease state of a sample.First,we categorize the biomarkers based on the information used in the learning and prediction steps.We then briefly introduce conventional node biomarkers,or molecular biomarkers without network information,and their computational approaches.The main focus of this paper is edge and network biomarkers,which exploit network information to improve the accuracy of diagnosis and prognosis.Moreover,by extracting both network and dynamic information from the data,we can develop dynamical network and edge biomarkers.These biomarkers not only diagnose the immediate pre-disease state but also detect the critical molecules or networks by which the biological system progresses from the healthy to the disease state.The identified critical molecules can be used as drug targets,and the critical state indicates the critical point of disease control.The paper also discusses representative biomarker-based methods. | ZENG Tao ZHANG WanWei YU XiangTian LIU XiaoPing LI MeiYi LIU Rui CHEN LuoNan | 2014 | Science China(Life Sciences)2014,57,11: | 5 |

| 7 | Karyotype Analysis of Gazania rigens Varieties显示文摘For studying species origin, systematic evolution and phylogenetic relationship of Gazania rigens, four different G. rigens varieties, with different flower colors, were subjected to chromosome karyotype analysis. The somatic chromosome number in three varieties ‘Hongwen', ‘Xingbai'and ‘Richu' was 2n = 10, while in ‘Zhongguo Xunzhangju' it was 2n = 20. We speculate that the cardinal number of chromosomes in G. rigens plants is x = 5, in which case ‘Zhongguo Xunzhangju' is a tetraploid. The karyotype formulae of ‘Hongwen', ‘Xingbai' and ‘Richu' were 2n = 8m + 2sm,2n = 8m + 2sm and 2n = 10 m respectively. The karyotype formula of ‘Zhongguo Xunzhangju' was 2n = 18 m + 2sm. The asymmetrical karyotype coefficients of the four G. rigens varieties ranged from 53.80% to 58.84%. Only ‘Richu' had a ‘1A' karyotype, while the others were relatively symmetric ‘2A'. | 20 | Spectrum Allocation for Cognitive Radio Networks with Non-Deterministic Bandwidth of Spectrum Hole显示文摘The spectrum allocation for cognitive radio networks(CRNs) has received considerable studies under the assumption that the bandwidth of spectrum holes is static. However, in practice, the bandwidth of spectrum holes is time-varied due to primary user/secondary user(PU/SU) activity and mobility, which result in non-determinacy. This paper studies the spectrum allocation for CRNs with non-deterministic bandwidth of spectrum holes. We present a novel probability density function(PDF) through order statistics as well as its simplified form to describe the statistical properties of spectrum holes, with which a statistical spectrum allocation model based on stochastic multiple knapsack problem(MKP) is formulated for spectrum allocation with non-deterministic bandwidth of spectrum holes. To reduce the computational complexity, we transform this stochastic programming problem into a constant MKP through exploiting the properties of cumulative distribution function(CDF), which can be solved via MTHG algorithm by using auxiliary variables.
