1Uric formaldehyde levels are negatively correlated with cognitive abilities in healthy older adults显示文摘Recent studies have shown that the abnormal accumulation of endogenous formaldehyde could be a critical factor in age-related cognitive decline. The aim of this study was to estimate the correlation between uric formaldehyde and general cognitive abilities in a community-based elderly population, and to measure the extent and direction in which the correlation varied with demographic characteristics. Using a double-blind design, formaldehyde in human urine was analyzed by high-performance liquid chromatography(n = 604), and general cognitive abilities were measured using the Montreal Cognitive Assessment(MoCA). Demographic characteristics, in terms of age, gender, residential region, and education were taken into consideration. We found that uric formaldehyde levels were inversely correlated with the MoCA score, and the concentration varied with demographic features: higher odds of a high formaldehyde level occurred among the less educated and those living in old urban or rural areas. In cytological experiments, the level of cellular formaldehyde released into the medium increased as SH-SY5Y and BV2 cells were incubated for three days. Formaldehyde in excess impairedthe processes of N2a cells and neurites of primary cultured rat hippocampal cells. However, removal of formaldehyde markedly rescued and regenerated the processes of N2a cells. These results demonstrated a negative correlation between the endogenous formaldehyde and general cognitive abilities. 3Tunable 3D Nanofiber Architecture of Polycaprolactone by Divergence Electrospinning for Potential Tissue Engineering Applications显示文摘The creation of biomimetic cell environments with micro and nanoscale topographical features resembling native tissues is critical for tissue engineering. To address this challenge, this study focuses on an innovative electrospinning strategy that adopts a symmetrically divergent electric field to induce rapid self-assembly of aligned polycaprolactone(PCL) nanofibers into a centimeter-scale architecture between separately grounded bevels. The 3D microstructures of the nanofiber scaffolds were characterized through a series of sectioning in both vertical and horizontal directions. PCL/collagen(type I)nanofiber scaffolds with different density gradients were incorporated in sodium alginate hydrogels and subjected to elemental analysis. Human fibroblasts were seeded onto the scaffolds and cultured for 7 days. Our studies showed that the inclination angle of the collector had significant effects on nanofiber attributes, including the mean diameter, density gradient, and alignment gradient. The fiber density and alignment at the peripheral area of the 45°-collector decreased by 21% and 55%, respectively, along the z-axis,while those of the 60°-collector decreased by 71% and 60%, respectively. By altering the geometry of the conductive areas on the collecting bevels, polyhedral and cylindrical scaffolds composed of aligned fibers were directly fabricated. By using a four-bevel collector, the nanofibers formed a matrix of microgrids with a density of 11%. The gradient of nitrogen-to-carbon ratio in the scaffold-incorporated hydrogel was consistent with the nanofiber density gradient. 4Enhanced CO catalytic oxidation by Sr reconstruction on the surface of LaxSr1-xCoO3-δ显示文摘Surface electronic structure of solid materials plays a critical role in heterogeneous catalysis. However,surface chemical composition of the perovskite oxides is usually dominated by segregated A-site cations and the amount of oxygen vacancies is relatively low, which seriously restricts their catalytic oxidation property. Here, we prepare perovskite La_xSr_(1-x)CoO_(3-δ)(x = 0.3, 0.5, 0.7) with different Sr doping amount and experiment results show that perovskite LSCO with higher content of surface Sr possesses more oxygen vacancies and better catalytic activity. On this basis, we develop a new experimental strategy to create more surface oxygen vacancies to promote their CO catalytic activity. In this method, we use high active hydrogen atoms(BH^(4-)) as reductant to realize surface in-situ chemical composite modification of La_xSr_(1-x)CoO_(3-δ)(x = 0.3, 0.5, 0.7), which causes their surface reconstruction(surface Sr enrichment).The regulation mainly focuses on the atomic layer level without damaging their bulk phase structure.Different from traditional high temperature annealing under reducing atmosphere, this method is high-efficiency, green and controllable. Furthermore, we study the surface reconstruction process and demonstrated that it is atomic layer engineering on the surface of La_xSr_(1-x)CoO_(3-δ)(x = 0.3, 0.5, 0.7) by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy(XPS) and X-ray absorption fine structure(XAFS). 5Grazing alters environmental control mechanisms of evapotranspiration in an alpine meadow of the tibetan Plateau显示文摘Aims Evapotranspiration(Et)is an important component of the terrestrial water cycle and is easily affected by external disturbances,such as climate change and grazing.Identifying Et responses to grazing is instructive for determining grazing activity and informative for understanding the water cycle.Methods this study utilized 2 years(2014 and 2017)of eddy covariance data to test how grazing regulated Et for an alpine meadow ecosystem on the tibetan Plateau(tP)by path analysis.Important Findings Radiation dominated Et with a decision coefficient of 64-74%.the soil water content(SWc)worked as the limiting factor in the fenced site.However,in the grazing site,the limiting factor was the vapor pressure deficit(VPD).Grazing had large effects on Et because it greatly affected the water conditions.the SWc and VPD were enhanced by 14.63%and 4.36%in the grazing site,respectively.therefore,sufficient water was supplied to Et,especially during drought,and strengthened the transpiration pull.As a result,a favorable micrometeorological environment was created for Et.Grazing shifted the limiting factor of Et from the SWc to VPD,which weakened the limiting effect of the water conditions on Et and advanced the Et peak time.In addition,grazing altered the compositions of Et by changing the community structure,which directly resulted in an increased Et.In summary,grazing enhanced Et through altering the community structure and micrometeorological environments.the findings of this study further improve our understanding of the driving mechanisms of grazing on Et and will improve our predictions for the global water cycle.Tingting An Mingjie Xu Tao Zhang Chengqun Yu Yingge Li Ning Chen Jiaxing Zu Junxiang Li Juntao Zhu Yi Sun Tingting Zhao Guirui Yu 2019Journal of Plant Ecology2019,12,5:3

7Rapid and flexible segmentation of electron microscopy data using few-shot machine learning显示文摘Automatic segmentation of key microstructural features in atomic-scale electron microscope images is critical to improved understanding of structure–property relationships in many important materials and chemical systems.However,the present paradigm involves time-intensive manual analysis that is inherently biased,error-prone,and unable to accommodate the large volumes of data produced by modern instrumentation.While more automated approaches have been proposed,many are not robust to a high variety of data,and do not generalize well to diverse microstructural features and material systems.Here,we present a flexible,semi-supervised few-shot machine learning approach for segmentation of scanning transmission electron microscopy images of three oxide material systems:(1)epitaxial heterostructures of SrTiO_(3)/Ge,(2)La_(0.8)Sr_(0.2)FeO_(3) thin films,and(3)MoO_(3) nanoparticles.We demonstrate that the few-shot learning method is more robust against noise,more reconfigurable,and requires less data than conventional image analysis methods.This approach can enable rapid image classification and microstructural feature mapping needed for emerging high-throughput characterization and autonomous microscope platforms.Sarah Akers Elizabeth Kautz Andrea Trevino-Gavito Matthew Olszta Bethany E.Matthews Le Wang Yingge Du Steven R.Spurgeon 2021npj Computational Materials2021,,1:3

19Global convergence in correlations among soil properties显示文摘The correlations among major soil properties at a global scale are essential for explaining the global convergence of ecological processes in terrestrial ecosystems but have never been assessed.In this study,a global soil database was analyzed to determine whether correlations among soil properties were consistent and how such correlations varied among continents and land use types.Across the entire dataset,the electrical conductivity of soils increased significantly with increasing pH;additionally,the total nitrogen and cation exchange capacity increased significantly with increasing organic carbon content,while the organic carbon content and cation exchange capacity decreased significantly with increasing sand content in soil.The correlations between paired soil properties were consistent among continents and land use types.The slopes of the relationships,however,varied significantly by continent and land use type.The results indicated a global convergence of correlations among soil properties and variation in the slopes of specific relationships between paired soil properties among continents and land use types.Such consistent global correlations and different slopes of specific correlations can have important implications in explaining the global patterns of biogeochemical processes and can provide some basis for linking soil resources with ecological processes on a global scale.Baicheng Xie Chunxia Zhang Guodong Wang Yingge Xie 2020International Journal of Agricultural and Biological Engineering2020,13,3:1
20Optically powered gas monitoring system using single-mode fibre for underground coal mines显示文摘We present an optically powered,intrinsically safe gas monitoring system to measure four essential environmental gases(CH_(4),CO_(2),CO and O_(2)),together with ambient temperature and pressure,for underground mines.The system is based on three key technologies developed at UNSW:(1)power-over-fbre(PoF)at 1550 nm using a single industry-standard,low-cost single-mode fbre(SMF)for both power delivery and information transmission,(2)liquid–crystal-based optical transducers for optical telemetry,and(3)ultra-low power consumption design of all electronics.Together,this approach allows each gas monitoring station to operate with less than 150 mW of optical power,meeting the intrinsic safety requirements specifed by the IEC60079-28 standard.A 2-month feld trial at BMA’s Broadmeadow underground mine proved the cabling compatibility to the mine’s existing optical network and the stability of the system performance.Compared with conventional electrically powered gas sensors,this technology bypasses the usual roadblocks of underground gas monitoring where electrical power is either unsafe or unavailable.Furthermore,using one fbre for both power delivery and communication enables longer distance coverage,reduces optical cabling and increases multiplexing possibilities and data throughput for better awareness of underground environment.Yingge Chen Leonardo Silvestri Xinyue Lei François Ladouceur 2022International Journal of Coal Science & Technology2022,9,2:1
