6How Could Agricultural Land Systems Contribute to Raise Food Production Under Global Change?显示文摘To feed the increasing world population,more food needs to be produced from agricultural land systems.Solutions to produce more food with fewer resources while minimizing adverse environmental and ecological consequences require sustainable agricultural land use practices as supplementary to advanced biotechnology and agronomy.This review paper,from a land system perspective,systematically proposed and analyzed three interactive strategies that could possibly raise future food production under global change.By reviewing the current literatures,we suggest that cropland expansion is less possible amid fierce land competition,and it is likely to do less in increasing food production.Moreover,properly allocating crops in space and time is a practical way to ensure food production.Climate change,dietary shifts,and other socio-economic drivers,which would shape the demand and supply side of food systems,should be taken into consideration during the decision-making on rational land management in respect of sustainable crop choice and allocation.And finally,crop-specific agricultural intensification would play a bigger role in raising future food production either by increasing the yield per unit area of individual crops or by increasing the number of crops sown on a particular area of land.Yet,only when it is done sustainably is this a much more effective strategy to maximize food production by closing yield and harvest gaps.WU Wen-bin YU Qiang-yi Verburg H Peter YOU Liang-zhi YANG Peng TANG Hua-jun 2014Journal of Integrative Agriculture2014,13,7:19

9Expression of perforin and granzyme B mRNA in judgement of immunosuppressive effect in rat liver transplantation显示文摘AIM To explore the expression of perform andgranzyme B genes mRNA to judge the effect ofimmunosuppression in acute rejection of livertransplantation.METHODS The expression of perform andgranzyme B genes mRNA was examined byreverse transcriptase-polymerase chain reaction(RT--PCR) in hamster to rat liver grafts under theimmunosuppression of cyclosporine or/andsplenectomy. Histological findings were studiedcomparatively.RESULTS Cyclosporine could obviouslydecrease the cellular infiltration, and completelyrepress the expression of mRNA for perform andgranzyme B, but could not change severehepatocyte necrosis and hemorrhage.SPlenectomy could significantly lightenhepatocyte necrosis, and completely eliminatehemorrhage, but not atfect the cellularinfiltration and the expression of perform andgranzyme B genes mRNA. Cyclosporine orsplenectomy alone could not prolong theSurvival time, however, their combination couldcompletely repress the rejection of liver grafts.The survival time of animals were significantlyprolonged (37.1 days ). The architecture ofhepatic lobules was preserved. 12Spatio-Temporal Changes in the Rice Planting Area and Their Relationship to Climate Change in Northeast China: A Model-Based Analysis显示文摘Rice is one of the most important grain crops in Northeast China(NEC)and its cultivation is sensitive to climate change.This study aimed to explore the spatio-temporal changes in the NEC rice planting area over the period of 1980-2010 and to analyze their relationship to climate change.To do so,the CLUE-S(conversion of land use and its effects at small region extent)model was first updated and used to simulate dynamic changes in the rice planting area in NEC to understand spatio-temporal change trends during three periods:1980-1990,1990-2000 and 2000-2010.The changing results in individual periods were then linked to climatic variables to investigate the climatic drivers of these changes.Results showed that the NEC rice planting area expanded quickly and increased by nearly 4.5 times during 1980-2010.The concentration of newly planted rice areas in NEC constantly moved northward and the changes were strongly dependent on latitude.This confirmed that climate change,increases in temperature in particular,greatly influenced the shift in the rice planting area.The shift in the north limit of the NEC rice planting area generally followed a 1°C isoline migration pattern,but with an obvious time-lag effect.These findings can help policy makers and crop producers take proper adaptation measures even when exposed to the global warming situation in NEC.XIA Tian WU Wen-bin ZHOU Qing-bo YU Qiang-yi Peter H Verburg YANG Peng LU Zhong-jun TANG Hua-jun 2014Journal of Integrative Agriculture2014,13,7:12

14Transcriptomic landscape regulated by the 14 types of bone morphogenetic proteins(BMPs)in lineage commitment and differentiation of mesenchymal stem cells(MSCs)显示文摘Mesenchymal stem cells(MSCs)are ubiquitously-existing multipotent progenitors that can self-renew and differentiate into multiple lineages including osteocytes,chondrocytes,adipocytes,tenocytes and myocytes.MSCs represent one of the most commonly-used adult progenitors and serve as excellent progenitor cell models for investigating lineagespecific differentiation regulated by various cellular signaling pathways,such as bone morphogenetic proteins(BMPs).As members of TGFb superfamily,BMPs play diverse and important roles in development and adult tissues.At least 14 BMPs have been identified in mammals.Different BMPs exert distinct but overlapping biological functions.Through a comprehensive analysis of 14 BMPs in MSCs,we demonstrated that BMP9 is one of the most potent BMPs in inducing osteogenic differentiation of MSCs.Nonetheless,a global mechanistic view of BMP signaling in regulating the proliferation and differentiation of MSCs remains to be fully elucidated.Here,we conducted a comprehensive transcriptomic profiling in the MSCs stimulated by 14 types of BMPs.Hierarchical clustering analysis classifies 14 BMPs into three subclusters:an osteo/chondrogenic/adipogenic cluster,a tenogenic cluster,and BMP3 cluster.We also demonstrate that six BMPs(e.g.,BMP2,BMP3,BMP4,BMP7,BMP8,and BMP9)can induce ISmads effectively,while BMP2,BMP3,BMP4,BMP7,and BMP11 up-regulate Smad-independent MAP kinase pathway.Furthermore,we show that many BMPs can upregulate the expression of the signal mediators of Wnt,Notch and PI3K/AKT/mTOR pathways.While the reported transcriptomic changes need to be further validated,our expression profiling represents the first-of-its-kind to interrogate a comprehensive transcriptomic landscape regulated by the 14 types of BMPs in MSCs.Linghuan Zhang Qing Luo Yi Shu Zongyue Zeng Bo Huang Yixiao Feng Bo Zhang Xi Wang Yan Lei Zhenyu Ye Ling Zhao Daigui Cao Lijuan Yang Xian Chen Bin Liu William Wagstaff Russell R*Reid Hue H*Luu Rex C*Haydon Michael J*Lee Jennifer Moriatis Wolf Zhou Fu Tong-Chuan He Quan Kang 2019Genes & Diseases2019,6,3:11
15Metformin does not improve survival in patients with hepatocellular carcinoma显示文摘AIM:To assess whether metformin,which has a chemopreventive effect in chronic liver disease,has any chemotherapeutic effect in hepatocellular carcinoma.METHODS:This was a retrospective study of 701 patients with newly diagnosed hepatocellular carcinoma(HCC)seen between January 2005 and June 2011 at Mayo Clinic,Rochester,Minnesota.This patient cohort was a part of the global HCC BRIDGE study,which is a large longitudinal study of HCC determining the realworld experience of HCC characteristics,management and patient outcomes.We defined significant metformin exposure as continuation of this agent at least 90d beyond diagnosis of HCC,and compared survival of diabetic patients on metformin to diabetic patients not on metformin and non-diabetics.RESULTS:Our cohort was 72.9%male,with a mean±SD age of 62.6±12.3 years.The most common etiologies of liver disease were hepatitis C(34%),alcoholic liver disease(29%),fatty liver disease(15%)and hepatitis B(9%).By univariate analysis,using diabetics not on metformin as the reference group,diabetic patients with HCC on metformin had no survival advantage,with a HR(95%CI)of 1.0(0.8-1.3).Non-diabetic HCC patients also did not appear to have a survival advantage as compared to diabetic HCC patients not on metformin,as demonstrated by a HR(95%CI)of1.1(0.7-1.7).Diabetics on metformin beyond 90 d after HCC diagnosis had a longer median survival at 34.2 mo,as compared to 25.5 mo among diabetic patients who were not on metformin or had discontinued metformin within 90 d after HCC diagnosis.This finding was likely due to potential survival bias among those who lived long enough to receive metformin.CONCLUSION:Although the literature suggests a chemotherapeutic effect in other malignancies,our study demonstrates no survival benefit to the use of metformin in diabetic patients with HCC.Mamatha Bhat Roongruedee Chaiteerakij William S Harmsen Cathy D Schleck Ju Dong Yang Nasra H Giama Terry M Therneau Gregory J Gores Lewis R Roberts 2014World Journal of Gastroenterology2014,20,42:11

17Late Cretaceous biota and the Cretaceous-Paleogene(K--Pg)Boundary in Jiayin of Heilongjiang,China显示文摘An international cooperative study of the Late Cretaceous biota and non-marine strata including the Cretaceous-Paleogene(K--Pg) boundary in Jiayin near the Heilongjiang River,China during 2002-2010,is summarized in this paper. The strata includes the Upper Cretaceous Yong'ancun-,Taipinglinchang-,Yuliang-zi-,and Furao formations,and the Paleocence Wuyun Formation consisting of Baoshantou Member and a Coalbearing Member. Seven palynological assemblages from Santonian to Paleocene are recognized,which is used for definition of the K--Pg boundary. Through the palynological analysis of three drilled boreholes (XHY-2005,2006,2008) in Xiaoheyan of western Jiayin,the K--Pg boundary is defined within 20. 00-20. 05 m in the borehole XHY-2006 (as a standard boundary) which is just between the top of Furao Formation (late Maasterichtian) and the base of Baishantou Member (early Danian) . These new research results are supported by paleo- magnetic,geochemical and other analyses,also. On the other hand,the presence of eight taxa of Maasterichtian dinosaurs (mostly hadrosaurids) have been recognized by the authors; and two mega-plant assemblages from the Yong'ancun Fm (Santonian) to Taipinglinchang Fm (Campanian) are confirmed. These research a-chievements indicate that the Upper Cretaceous-Paleocene in Jiayin can be well correlated to the strata in the neighboring Zeya-Bureja basin,Russia. The K--Pg boundary definited in Jiayin is the first well documented non-marine K--Pg boundary in China. 18Pyrrolidine dithiocarbamate reduces ischemia-reperfusion injury of the small intestine显示文摘AIM: To evaluate whether pyrrolidine dithiocarbamate (PDTC), an enhancer of HO production, attenuates intestinal IR injury.METHODS: Eighteen male rats were randomly allocated into three groups: (a) sham; (b) IR, consisting of 30 min of intestinal ischemia, followed by 2-h period of reperfusion; and (c) PDTC treatment before IR. Intestinal microvascular perfusion (IMP) was monitored continuously by laser Doppler fiowmetry. At the end of the reperfusion, serum samples for lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) levels and biopsies of ileum were obtained. HO activity in the ileum was assessed at the end of the reperfusion period.RESULTS: At the end of the reperfusion in the IR group,IMP recovered partially to 42.5% of baseline (P<0.05vs sham), whereas PDTC improved IMP to 67.3% of baseline (P<0.01 vs IR). There was a twofold increase in HO activity in PDTC group (2 062.66±106.11) as compared to IR (842.3±85.12) (P<0.001). LDH was significantly reduced (P<0.001) in PDTC group (585.6±102.4)as compared to IR group (1 973.8±306.5). Histological examination showed that the ileal mucosa was significantly less injured in PDTC group as compared with IR group.CONCLUSION: Our study demonstrates that PDTC improves the IMP and attenuates IR injury of the intestine possibly via HO production. 19Directly patterned substrate-free plasmonic “nanograter” structures with unusual Fano resonances显示文摘The application of three-dimensional(3D)plasmonic nanostructures as metamaterials(MMs),nano-antennas,and other devices faces challenges in producing metallic nanostructures with easily definable orientations,sophisticated shapes,and smooth surfaces that are operational in the optical regime and beyond.Here,we demonstrate that complex 3D nanostructures can be readily achieved with focused-ion-beam irradiation-induced folding and examine the optical characteristics of plasmonic“nanograter”structures that are composed of free-standing Au films.These 3D nanostructures exhibit interesting 3D hybridization in current flows and exhibit unusual and well-scalable Fano resonances at wavelengths ranging from 1.6 to 6.4 mm.Upon the introduction of liquids of various refractive indices to the structures,a strong dependence of the Fano resonance is observed,with spectral sensitivities of 1400 nm and 2040 nm per refractive index unit under figures of merit of 35.0 and 12.5,respectively,for low-order and high-order resonance in the near-infrared region.This work indicates the exciting,increasing relevance of similarly constructed 3D free-standing nanostructures in the research and development of photonics and MMs.Ajuan Cui Zhe Liu Jiafang Li Tiehan H Shen Xiaoxiang Xia Zhiyuan Li Zhijie Gong Hongqiang Li Benli Wang Junjie Li Haifang Yang Wuxia Li Changzhi Gu 2015Light(Science & Applications)2015,4,1:8
20Interpretation of Climate Change and Agricultural Adaptations by Local Household Farmers: a Case Study at Bin County, Northeast China显示文摘Although climate change impacts and agricultural adaptations have been studied extensively,how smallholder farmers perceive climate change and adapt their agricultural activities is poorly understood.Survey-based data(presents farmers’personal perceptions and adaptations to climate change)associated with external biophysical-socioeconomic data(presents real-world climate change)were used to develop a farmer-centered framework to explore climate change impacts and agricultural adaptations at a local level.A case study at Bin County(1980s-2010s),Northeast China,suggested that increased annual average temperature(0.6°C per decade)and decreased annual precipitation(46 mm per decade,both from meteorological datasets)were correctly perceived by 76 and 66.9%,respectively,of farmers from the survey,and that a longer growing season was confirmed by 70%of them.These reasonably correct perceptions enabled local farmers to make appropriate adaptations to cope with climate change:Longer season alternative varieties were found for maize and rice,which led to a significant yield increase for both crops.The longer season also affected crop choice:More farmers selected maize instead of soybean,as implicated from survey results by a large increase in the maize growing area.Comparing warming-related factors,we found that precipitation and agricultural disasters were the least likely causes for farmers’agricultural decisions.As a result,crop and variety selection,rather than disaster prevention and infrastructure improvement,was the most common ways for farmers to adapt to the notable warming trend in the study region.YU Qiang-yi WU Wen-bin LIU Zhen-huan Peter H Verburg XIA Tian YANG Peng LU Zhong-jun YOU Liang-zhi TANG Hua-jun 2014Journal of Integrative Agriculture2014,13,7:8
