1Microbial and heavy metal contamination in commonly consumed traditional Chinese herbal medicines显示文摘OBJECTIVE: The increasing popularity and widespread use of traditional Chinese herbs as alternative medicine have sparked an interest in understanding their biosafety, especially in decoctions that are consumed. This study aimed to assess the level of microbial and heavy metal contamination in commonly consumed herbal medicine in Malaysia and the effects of boiling on these contamination levels. METHODS: Four commonly consumed Chinese herbal medicine in Malaysia-'Eight Treasure Herba Tea', 'Herbal Tea', Xiyangshen (Radix Panacis Quinquefolii) and Dangshen (Radix Codonopsis) were evaluated in this study. Herbal medicines were prepared as boiled and non-boiled decoctions, and their microbial enumeration and heavy metal detection were conducted with plate assay and atomic absorption spectroscopy, respectively. RESULTS: Findings revealed that herbal medicines generally had 6 log10cfu/mL microbial cells and that boiling had significantly reduced microbial contam-inants, where no Bacillus spp., Staphylococcus spp. and Clostridium spp. were recovered. Heavy metals such as Mn, Cu, Cd, Pb, Fe and Zn were also detected from all the samples, generally in low concentrations (<1 mg/L) except for Mn (18.545 mg/L). All decoctions (after boiling) have reduced concentrations of Cu, while others were not significantly different. Comparisons between samples with single and multi-herbs suggest level of microbial and metal contamination is not influenced by number of herbs in sample. CONCLUSION: Herbal medicines generally have microbial and heavy metal contaminants. However, the boiling process to generate decoctions was able to successfully reduce the number of microbes and Cu, ensuring safety of herbal medicines for consumption.Adelinesuyien Ting Yiingyng Chow Weishang Tan 2013Journal of Traditional Chinese Medicine2013,33,1:11

5ZnF_(2)coated three dimensional Li-Ni composite anode for improved performance显示文摘Lithium metal is a promising anode material for high energy density batteries,which is restricted from practical application by the issues including lithium dendrite,parasitic reaction and volumetric change.Herein,a strategy combing bulk and surface modification is proposed to address these problems.The bulk modification is to use Ni foam as three dimensional(3D)scaffold for direct infusion of molten Li resulting in the formation of Li-Ni composite anode,which reduces actual current density by increasing specific surface area and alleviates volumetric change in the process of Li stripping/plating.And the surface modification is to coat with ZnF_(2)film via sputtering,which is acted as artificial protective layer for controlling interfacial side reaction.The symmetric cell consisting of ZnF_(2)coated Li-Ni composite electrodes exhibits low overpotential(about 45 mV)and stable cycling over 900 h at 1mA cm^(-2).Furthermore,the cell with LiCoO_(2)cathode delivers 110 mAh g^(-1)at 1 C rate after 500 cycles.Weishang Jia Ying Wang Siji Qu Zeyu Yao Yuchi Liu Chao Li Zhihong Wang Jingze Li 2019Journal of Materiomics2019,5,2:1
6The Effects of Shrimp Gut Probiotic Bacteria on the Shrimp Larvae (Penaeus Chinensis)显示文摘The survival rates of shrimp larvae in different stage are higher than those of control groups when probiotic bacteria strains X4B 1 and X1B 1 which are isolated from gut of adult shrimp are added into the little volume rearing sea water of shrimp larvae. The effects of probiotic bacteria are evaluated by challenge test (pathogenic bacteria Z 3G 2 isolated from disease shrimp larvae in the hatchery of Jimo town) and low salinity stress resistance tests on shrimp larvae, the survival rate and lengths of the shrimp larvae in the experiment are determined. Results indicate that 1. The survival rate, ability of resistant to low salinity, lengths of the delivered shrimp larvae are improved after the strains of probiotic bacteria, X4B 1 or X1B 1, are added into the rearing sea water of hatchery. 2. The addition of the probiotic bacteria could not influence the change of the bacteria number, NH3 N and COD value in the rearing sea water. 3. The probiotic bacteria used in the experiment have many enzymes such as Lipase, Amylase, Gelatinase and Lecithinase. These enzymes may help the probiotic bacteria to digest the food components fed to shrimp larvae and increase the digestive efficiency of post larvae.
