| 1 | Association of Overlapped and Un-overlapped Comorbidities with COVID-19 Severity and Treatment Outcomes: A Retrospective Cohort Study from Nine Provinces in China显示文摘Objective Several COVID-19 patients have overlapping comorbidities. The independent role of each component contributing to the risk of COVID-19 is unknown, and how some non-cardiometabolic comorbidities affect the risk of COVID-19 remains unclear.Methods A retrospective follow-up design was adopted. A total of 1,160 laboratory-confirmed patients were enrolled from nine provinces in China. Data on comorbidities were obtained from the patients’ medical records. Multivariable logistic regression models were used to estimate the odds ratio(OR) and 95% confidence interval(95% CI) of the associations between comorbidities(cardiometabolic or non-cardiometabolic diseases), clinical severity, and treatment outcomes of COVID-19.Results Overall, 158(13.6%) patients were diagnosed with severe illness and 32(2.7%) had unfavorable outcomes. Hypertension(2.87, 1.30–6.32), type 2 diabetes(T2 DM)(3.57, 2.32–5.49),cardiovascular disease(CVD)(3.78, 1.81–7.89), fatty liver disease(7.53, 1.96–28.96), hyperlipidemia(2.15, 1.26–3.67), other lung diseases(6.00, 3.01–11.96), and electrolyte imbalance(10.40, 3.00–26.10)were independently linked to increased odds of being severely ill. T2 DM(6.07, 2.89–12.75), CVD(8.47,6.03–11.89), and electrolyte imbalance(19.44, 11.47–32.96) were also strong predictors of unfavorable outcomes. Women with comorbidities were more likely to have severe disease on admission(5.46,3.25–9.19), while men with comorbidities were more likely to have unfavorable treatment outcomes(6.58, 1.46–29.64) within two weeks.Conclusion Besides hypertension, diabetes, and CVD, fatty liver disease, hyperlipidemia, other lung diseases, and electrolyte imbalance were independent risk factors for COVID-19 severity and poor treatment outcome. | 2 | Night Sleep Duration and Risk of Cognitive Impairment in a Chinese Population: A Cross-sectional Study显示文摘Objective Although sleep is one of the most important health-related behavioral factors,the association between night sleep duration and cognitive impairment has not been fully understood.A cross-sectional study was conducted with a random sample of 2,514 participants(≥40 years of age;46.6% women) in China to examine the association between night sleep duration and cognitive impairment.Methods Night sleep duration was categorized as ≤ 5,6,7,8,or ≥9 h per night.Cognitive function was measured using the Mini-Mental State Examination.A multivariate regression analysis was used to analyze the association of night sleep duration with cognitive impairment.A total of 122 participants were diagnosed with cognitive impairment.Results A U-shaped association between night sleep duration and cognitive impairment was found.The odds ratios(95% confidence intervals) of cognitive impairment(with 7 h of daily sleep being considered as the reference) for individuals reporting ≤ 5,6,8,and ≥9 h were 2.14(1.20-3.83),1.13(0.67-1.89),1.51(0.82-2.79),and 5.37(1.62-17.80),respectively(P≤0.01).Conclusion Short or long night sleep duration was an important sleep-related factor independently associated with cognitive impairment and may be a useful marker for increased risk of cognitive impairment. | SONG Qiao Feng LIU Xiao Xue HU Wan Ning HAN Xiao Chen ZHOU Wen Hua LU Ai Dong WANG Xi Zhu WU Shou Ling | 2017 | Biomedical and Environmental Sciences2017,30,10: | 5 |

| 4 | Aerosol printing and photonic sintering of bioresorbable zinc nanoparticle ink for transient electronics manufacturing显示文摘Bioresorbable electronics technology can potentially lead to revolutionary applications in healthcare, consumer electronics, and data security. This technology has been demonstrated by various functional devices. However, majority of these devices are realized by CMOS fabrication approaches involving complex and time-consuming processes that are high in cost and low in yield. Printing electronics technology represents a series of printing and post processing techniques that hold promise to make high performance bioresorbable electronics devices. But investigation of printing approaches for bioresorbable electronics is very limited. Here we demonstrate fabrication of conductive bioresorbable patterns using aerosol printing and photonic sintering approaches. Experimental results and simulation reveals that ink compositions, photonic energy, film thickness, and ventilation conditions may influence the effect of photonic sintering. A maximum conductivity of 22321.3 S/m can be achieved using 1 flash with energy of 25.88 J/cm^2 with duration of 2 ms. By combining two cascaded sintering procedures using flash light and laser further improve the conductivity to 34722.2 S/m. The reaction order of cupric ion in accelerating the bacterial growth is 0.067. | 14 | Effects of a combination of non-pharmaceutical psychological interventions on dental anxiety显示文摘Background:Dental anxiety is a common problem associated with poorer oral health.Managing anxiety is key to improving oral health of patients with dental anxiety.The present pilot study therefore investigated dental anxiety prevalence among patients visiting a university dental clinic.We further examined the effect of combined psychological interventions on anxiety or concern towards dental treatment procedures before treatment,after treatment,and at follow-up.Methods:In this prospective pilot study,patients seeking restorative treatment were screened for dental anxiety and dental concern about treatment using the Dental Anxiety Scale-Revised(DAS-R)and Dental Concern Assessment(DCA)questionnaires.Participants with a DAS-R score of 9 or above were randomly assigned to an experimental or control group.The patients in the experimental group received two psychological interventions(psychoeducation and progressive muscular relaxation)prior to dental treatment.During treatment,patients received another psychological intervention(music distraction).No psychological interventions were given to control patients.DAS-R and DCA scores were used to assess dental anxiety and concern,respectively,before treatment,after treatment,and at follow-up.Nonparametric tests were used for intergroup and intragroup statistical analyses.Results:Out of 64 patients surveyed,33(51.6%)had experienced dental anxiety.Of those,2 were excluded,and 31 patients with a mean±SD age of 41.2±15.9 y completed the study.No intergroup differences in dental anxiety were found in terms of pretreatment,posttreatment,and follow-up treatment.The mean rank value of the dental anxiety score was less in the experimental group(13.53)than the control group(18.31),albeit not significant.More specifically,differences(Kruskal-Wallisχ2=14.82,P=0.001,effect size=0.33)were found in the experimental group for pretreatment,posttreatment,and follow-up treatment levels of dental anxiety for extraction(P=0.01),injection(P=0.02),and sound/vibration of the drill(P=0.00).No significant intragroup differences between pretreatment,posttreatment,and follow-up treatment were found in the control group.Conclusions:The combined brief psychological interventions reduced dental anxiety.Relevance for patients:The psychological interventions of the present study could be applied right before or during dental treatment to reduce the dental anxiety of patients.However,additional research involving larger groups is needed to replicate the results of this pilot study. | Choon Yoong Wong Coumaravelou Saravanan Ammar Musawi Shou Wan Gan | 2017 | Journal of Clinical & Translational Research2017,3,3: | 0 |
