Past, present, and future of biochar显示文摘After entering the twenty-first century, biochar has become a focal point of multidisciplinary research because of its special characteristics, broad application, and promising development prospects.Basic and applied research on the application of biochar in the areas of agriculture, environment, and energy have increased dramatically in the face of food security, environmental pollution, and energy shortage.Although there are some disputes about biochar research, many studies have demonstrated the importance of biochar research from the perspective of scientific advancement and practical application. This paper briefly recalls the history of biochar application;introduces research progress on the basic characteristics of biochar and its associated production technologies;summarizes the research status and existing problems of biochar application in the areas of agriculture, environment, and energy;and analyzes the potential problems and development trends of biochar research in the future. | Wenfu Chen Jun Meng Xiaori Han Yu Lan Weiming Zhang | 2019 | Biochar2019,1,1: | 66
A scientometric review of biochar research in the past 20 years(1998-2018)显示文摘Biochar is the carbon-rich product obtained from the thermochemical conversion of biomass under oxygen-limited conditions.Biochar has attained extensive attention due to its agronomical and environmental benefits in agro-ecosystems.This work adopts the scientometric analysis method to assess the development trends of biochar research based on the literature data retrieved from the Web of Science over the period of 1998-2018.By analysing the basic characteristics of 6934 publications,we found that the number of publications grew rapidly since 2010.Based on a keyword analysis,it is concluded that scholars have had a fundamental recognition of biochar and preliminarily found that biochar application had agronomic and environmental benefits during the period of 1998-2010.The clustering results of keywords in documents published during 2011-2015 showed that the main research hotspots were“biochar production”,“biochar and global climate change”,“soil quality and plant growth”,“organic pollutants removal”,and“heavy metals immobilization”.While in 2016-2018,beside these five main research hotspots,“biochar and composting”topic had also received greater attention, indicating that biochar utilization in organic solid waste composting is the current research hotspot. Moreover, updated reactors(e.g.,microwave reactor,fixed-bed reactor,screw-feeding reactor, bubbling fluidized bed reactor, etc.)or technologies(e.g.,solar pyrolysis,Thermo-Catalytic Reforming process, liquefaction technology, etc.)applied for efficient energy production and modified biochar for environmental remediation have been extensively studied recently. The findings may help the new researchers to seize the research frontier in the biochar field. | Ping Wu Syed Tahir Ata-Ul-Karim Bhupinder Pal Singh Hailong Wang Tongliang Wu Cun Liu Guodong Fang Dongmei Zhou Yujun Wang Wenfu Chen | 2019 | Biochar2019,1,1: | 36
Extracellular vesicle activities regulating macrophage- and tissue-mediated injury and repair responses显示文摘Macrophages are typically identified as classically activated(M1) macrophages and alternatively activated(M2) macrophages, which respectively exhibit pro-and anti-inflammatory phenotypes, and the balance between these two subtypes plays a critical role in the regulation of tissue inflammation, injury, and repair processes.Recent studies indicate that tissue cells and macrophages interact via the release of small extracellular vesicles(EVs) in processes where EVs released by stressed tissue cells can promote the activation and polarization of adjacent macrophages which can in turn release EVs and factors that can promote cell stress and tissue inflammation and injury and vice versa. This review discusses the roles of such EVs in resulating such interactions to influence tissue inflammation and injury in a number of acute and chronic inflammatory disease conditions, and the potential applications, advantage and concerns for using EV-based therapeutic approaches to treat such conditions, including their potential role of drug carriers for the treatment of infectious diseases. | Qian Hu Christopher J.Lyon Jesse K.Fletcher Wenfu Tang Meihua Wan Tony Y.Hu | 2021 | Acta Pharmaceutica Sinica B2021,11,6: | 22
CALIBRATION OF A 6-DOF SPACE ROBOT USING GENETIC ALGORITHM显示文摘The kinematic error model of a 6-DOF space robot is deduced, and the cost function of kinematic parameter identification is built. With the aid of the genetic algorithm (GA) that has the powerful global adaptive probabilistic search ability,24 parameters of the robot are identified through simulation, which makes the pose (position and orientation) accuracy of the robot a great improvement. In the process of the calibration, stochastic measurement noises are considered.Lastly, generalization of the identified kinematic parameters in the whole workspace of the robot is discussed. The simulation results show that calibrating the robot with GA is very stable and not sensitive to measurement noise. Moreover, even if the robot's kinematic parameters are relative,GA still has strong search ability to find the optimum solution. | LIU Yu JIANG Yanshu LIANG Bin XU Wenfu | 2008 | Chinese Journal of Mechanical Engineering2008,21,6: | 15
Visualizing the emerging trends of biochar research and applications in 2019:a scientometric analysis and review显示文摘Biochar, derived from thermal pyrolysis of biomass, has been regarded as a low-cost,sustainable and beneficial material and widely applied in agriculture, environment and energy during the last two decades. To elucidate the research status timely and future trends in biochar field,CiteSpace is used to systematically analyze the related literature retrieved from the Web of Science core collection in 2019.Based on the keywords clustering analysis,it was found that“biochar production”,“organic pollutants removal”,“heavy metals immobilization”,“bioremediation”were the main hotspots in research covering biochar.“Bioremediation”is an emerging topic and deserves extensive attention due to its highly effective and environmentally friendly treatment of pollutants.Improving the phytoremediation effect, immobilizing functional microorganisms on biochar, and using microorganisms as raw materials to produce biochar were the common methods of biochar-assisted bioremediation. While studies focused on“soil quality and plant growth”and“biochar and global climate change”decreased, investigations concentrated in the toxicity of biochar to soil biota and ruminants are sustainably growing.Research on direct and catalytic thermal pyrolysis of green waste(mainly microalgae)for biofuels(bio-oil,biodiesel,syngas,etc.)and biochar production is increasing.Converting municipal wastes(e.g.,sewage sludge, fallen leaves)into biochar through pyrolysis was a suitable treatment for municipal waste and became a popular topic in recent time. Moreover, the biochar produced from these municipal wastes exhibited excellent performance in the removal of pollutants from wastewater and soil. This review may help to identify future directions in biochar research and applications. | Ping Wu Zeyu Wang Hailong Wang Nanthi S.Bolan Yujun Wang Wenfu Chen | 2020 | Biochar2020,2,2: | 14
Advances in soliton microcomb generation显示文摘Optical frequency combs,a revolutionary light source characterized by discrete and equally spaced frequencies, are usually regarded as a cornerstone for advanced frequency metrology, precision spectroscopy,high-speed communication, distance ranging, molecule detection, and many others.Due to the rapid development of micro/nanofabrication technology, breakthroughs in the quality factor of microresonators enable ultrahigh energy buildup inside cavities, which gives birth to microcavity-based frequency combs. In particular, the full coherent spectrum of the soliton microcomb(SMC)provides a route to low-noise ultrashort pulses with a repetition rate over two orders of magnitude higher than that of traditional mode-locking approaches. This enables lower power consumption and cost for a wide range of applications. This review summarizes recent achievements in SMCs,including the basic theory and physical model,as well as experimental techniques for single-soliton generation and various extraordinary soliton states(soliton crystals,Stokes solitons, breathers, molecules, cavity solitons, and dark solitons),with a perspective on their potential applications and remaining challenges. | Weiqiang Wang Leiran Wang Wenfu Zhang | 2020 | Advanced Photonics2020,2,3: | 10
Grassland degradation in Northern Tibet based on remote sensing data显示文摘This study selected vegetation cover as the main evaluation index, calculated the grassland degradation index (GDI) and established the remote sensing monitoring and evaluation system for grassland degradation in Northern Tibet, according to the National Standard (GB19377-2003), based on the remote sensing data such as NDVI data derived from NOAA/AVHRR with a spatial resolution of 8 km of 1981-2000, from SPOT/VGT with a spatial resolution of 1 km of 2001 and from MODIS with a spatial resolution of 0.25 km of 2002-2004 respectively in this area, in combination with the actual condition of grassland degradation. The grassland degradation processes and their responses to climate change during 1981-2004 were discussed and analyzed in this paper. The result indicated that grassland degradation in Northern Tibet is very serious, and the mean value of GDI in recent 20 years is 2.54 which belongs to the serious degradation grade. From 1981 to 2004, the GDI fluctuated distinctly with great interannual variations in the proportion of degradation degree and GDI but the general tendency turned to severe-grade during this period with the grassland degradation grade changed from light degraded to serious degraded in Northern Tibet. The extremely serious degraded and serious degraded grassland occupied 1.7% and 8.0% of the study area, the moderate and light degraded grassland accounted for 13.2% and 27.9% respectively, and un-degraded grassland occupied 49.2% of the total grassland area in 2004. The grassland degradation was serious, especially in the conjunctive area of Naqu, Biru and Jiali counties, the headstream of the Yangtze River lying in the Galadandong snow mountain and glaciers, the area along the Qinghai-Tibet highway and railway, and areas around the Tanggula and Nianqingtanggula snow mountains and glaciers. So the snow mountains and glaciers as well as their adjacent areas in Northern Tibet were sensitive to climate change and the areas along the vital communication line with frequent human activities experienced relatively serious grassland degradation. | GAO Qingzhu LI Yu'e WAN Yunfan LIN Erda XIONG Wei JIANGCUN Wangzha WANG Baoshan LI Wenfu | 2006 | Journal of Geographical Sciences2006,16,2: | 10

Generation of coexisting high-energy pulses in a mode-locked all-fiber laser with a nonlinear multimodal interference technique显示文摘We demonstrate a passively mode-locked all-fiber laser incorporating a piece of graded-index multimode fiber as a mode-locking modulator based on a nonlinear multimodal interference technique, which generates two types of coexisting high-energy ultrashort pulses [i.e., the conventional soliton(CS) and the stretched pulse(SP)]. The CS with pulse energy as high as 0.38 n J is obtained at the pump level of 130 mW. When the pump increases to175 mW, the high-energy SP occurs at a suitable nonlinear phase bias and its pulse energy can reach 4 n J at a 610 mW pump. The pulse durations of the generated CS and SP are 2.3 ps and 387 fs, respectively. The theory of nonlinear fiber optics, single-shot spectral measurement by the dispersive Fourier-transform technique, and simulation methods based on the Ginzburg–Landau equation are provided to characterize the laser physics and reveal the underlying principles of the generated CS and SP. A rogue wave, observed between the CS and SP regions, mirrors the laser physics behind the dynamics of generating a high-energy SP from a CS. The proposed all-fiber laser is versatile, cost-effective and easy to integrate, which provides a promising solution for high-energy pulse generation. | GUANGWEI CHEN WENLEI LI GUOMEI WANG WENFU ZHANG CHAO ZENG WEI ZHAO | 2019 | Photonics Research2019,7,2: | 9

Population Genomic Analysis and De Novo Assembly Reveal the Origin of Weedy Rice as an Evolutionary Game显示文摘Crop weediness, especially that of weedy rice(Oryza sativa f.spontanea),remains mysterious.Weedy rice possesses robust ecological adaptability;however, how this strain originated and gradually formed proprietary genetic features remains unclear? Here,we demonstrate that weedy rice at Asian high latitudes(WRAH)is phylogenetically well defined and possesses unselected genomic characteristics in many divergence regions between weedy and cultivated rice.We also identified novel quantitative trait loci underlying weedy-specific traits, and revealed that a genome block on the end of chromosome 1 is associated with rice weediness. To identify the genomic modifications underlying weedy rice evolution,we generated the first de novo assembly of a high-quality weedy rice genome(WR04-6),and conducted a comparative genomics study between WR04-6 with other rice reference genomes.Multiple lines of evidence, including the results of demographic scenario comparisons, suggest that differentiation between weedy rice and cultivated rice was initiated by genetic improvement of cultivated rice and that the essence of weediness arose through semi-domestication.A plant height model further implied that the origin of WRAH can be modeled as an evolutionary game and indicated that strategy-based selection driven by fitness shaped its genomic diversity. | Jian Sun Dianrong Ma Liang Tang Minghui Zhao Guangchen Zhangh Wenjia Wang Jiayu Song Xiang Li Zimeng Liu Wenxing Zhang Quan Xu Yuncheng Zhou Jianzhong Wu Toshio Yamamoto Fei Dai Yan Lei Song Li Gang Zhou Hongkun Zheng Zhengjin Xu Wenfu Chen | 2019 | Molecular Plant2019,12,5: | 9
Long-distance ranging with high precision using a soliton microcomb显示文摘Laser-based light detection and ranging(lidar)plays a significant role in both scientific and industrial areas. However,it is difficult for existing lidars to achieve high speed, high precision, and long distance simultaneously. Here,we demonstrate a high-performance lidar based on a chip-scaled soliton microcomb(SMC)that can realize all three specialties simultaneously.Aided by the excellent properties of ultrahigh repetition rate and the smooth envelope of the SMC,traditional optical frequency comb(OFC)-based dispersive interferometry is heavily improved and the measuring dead zone induced by the mismatch between the repetition rate of the OFC and resolution of the optical spectrum analyzer is totally eliminated.Combined with an auxiliary dual-frequency phase-modulated laser range finder, the none-dead-zone measurable range ambiguity is extended up to 1500 m.The proposed SMC lidar is experimentally implemented in both indoor and outdoor environment. In the outdoor baseline field,real-time,high-speed(up to 35 k Hz)measurement of a long distance of^1179 m is achieved with a minimum Allan deviation of 5.6μm at an average time of 0.2 ms(27 nm at an average time of 1.8 s after high-pass filtering). The present SMC lidar approaches a compact,fast,high-precision,and none-dead zone long-distance ranging system, aimed at emerging applications of frontier basic scientific research and advances in industrial manufacturing. | JINDONG WANG ZHIZHOU LU WEIQIANG WANG FUMIN ZHANG JIAWEI CHEN YANG WANG JIHUI ZHENG SAI T.CHU WEI ZHAO BRENT E.LITTLE XINGHUA QU WENFU ZHANG | 2020 | Photonics Research2020,8,12: | 8
Area-oriented coordinated trajectory planning of dual-arm space robot for capturing a tumbling target显示文摘The growing amount of space debris poses a threat to operational spacecraft and the long-term sustainability of activities in outer space. According to the orbital mechanics, an uncontrolled space object will be tumbling, bringing great challenge to capture and remove it. In this paper, a dual-arm coordinated ‘‘Area-Oriented Capture'(AOC) method is proposed to capture a non-cooperative tumbling target. Firstly, the motion equation of the tumbling target is established, based on which, the dynamic properties are analyzed. Then, the ‘‘Area-Oriented Capture'concept is presented to deal with the problem of large pose(position and attitude) deviation and tumbling motion. An area rather than fixed points/devices is taken as the object to be tracked and captured. As long as the manipulators’ end-effectors move to a specified range of the objective areas(not fixed points on the target, but areas), the target satellite will be hugged by the two arms.At last, the proposed method and the traditional method(i.e. fixed-point oriented capture method)are compared and analyzed through simulation. The results show that the proposed method has larger pose tolerance and takes shorter time for capturing a tumbling target. | Wenfu XU Lei YAN Zhonghua HU Bin LIANG | 2019 | Chinese Journal of Aeronautics2019,32,9: | 8
Emodin attenuates severe acute pancreatitis-associated acute lung injury by suppressing pancreatic exosome-mediated alveolar macrophage activation显示文摘Severe acute pancreatitis-associated acute lung injury(SAP-ALI) is a serious disease associated with high mortality. Emodin has been applied to alleviate SAP-ALI;however, the mechanism remains unclear. We report that the therapeutic role of emodin in attenuating SAP-ALI is partly dependent on an exosomal mechanism. SAP rats had increased levels of plasma exosomes with altered protein contents compared to the sham rats. These infused plasma exosomes tended to accumulate in the lungs and promoted the hyper-activation of alveolar macrophages and inflammatory damage. Conversely, emodin treatment decreased the plasma/pancreatic exosome levels in the SAP rats. Emodin-primed exosomes showed less pro-inflammatory effects in alveolar macrophages and lung tissues than SAP exosomes. In detail, emodin-primed exosomes suppressed the NF-κB pathway to reduce the activation of alveolar macrophage and ameliorate lung inflammation by regulating PPARγ pathway, while these effects were amplified/abolished by PPARγ agonist/antagonist. Blockage of pancreatic acinar cell exosome biogenesis also exhibited suppression of alveolar macrophage activation and reduction of lung inflammation. This study suggests a vital role of exosomes in participating inflammation-associated organ-injury,and indicates emodin can attenuate SAP-ALI by reducing the pancreatic exosome-mediated alveolar macrophage activation. | Qian Hu Jiaqi Yao Xiajia Wu Juan Li Guixiang Li Wenfu Tang Jingping Liu Meihua Wan | 2022 | Acta Pharmaceutica Sinica B2022,12,10: | 7
Characteristics of pantograph‐catenary arc under low air pressure and strong airflow显示文摘Pantograph‐catenary arc fault is the primary factor threatening the stability of the power transmission for high‐speed railway. The motion characteristics of the pantograph‐catenary arc under low air pressure and strong airflow is significantly different from the case under atmospheric pressure. In this paper,an experimental platform of panto-graph‐catenary arc was built to investigate arc root position‐time and arc column lon-gitudinal drift height‐time characteristic curves under different air pressures and airflow velocites.Via analysing the corresponding results,it can be found that there are different arc root-arc column traction mechanisms at different stages of arc development. The arcing time and arc root stagnation time under low air pressure are significantly longer than the case under atmospheric pressure, resulting in more serious electrode ablation. The arc column longitudinal drift velocity and height are greater with the increase of airflow velocity. Two typical irregular arc motion phenomena-arc root jumping and arc reignition are observed. To clarify the internal mechanism of the above phenomenon,a magnetohydrodynamics(MHD)model of the pantograph‐catenary arc was lauched, the influence mechanism of the pantograph‐catenary arc temperature and voltage are studied, and the physical process of arc temperature oscillation is analysed. The research results provide theoretical support for arc protection in high‐altitude areas. | Zhilei Xu Guoqiang Gao Wenfu Wei Zefeng Yang Wenhan Xie Keliang Dong Yaguang Ma Yan Yang Guangning Wu | 2022 | High Voltage2022,7,2: | 7
Genetic-algorithm-based deep neural networks for highly efficient photonic device design显示文摘While deep learning has demonstrated tremendous potential for photonic device design,it often demands a large amount of labeled data to train these deep neural network models.Preparing these data requires high-resolution numerical simulations or experimental measurements and cost significant,if not prohibitive, time and resources. In this work,we present a highly efficient inverse design method that combines deep neural networks with a genetic algorithm to optimize the geometry of photonic devices in the polar coordinate system. The method requires significantly less training data compared with previous inverse design methods. We implement this method to design several ultra-compact silicon photonics devices with challenging properties including power splitters with uncommon splitting ratios,a TE mode converter, and a broadband power splitter. These devices are free of the features beyond the capability of photolithography and generally in compliance with silicon photonics fabrication design rules. | YANGMING REN LINGXUAN ZHANG WEIQIANG WANG XINYU WANG YUFANG LEI YULONG XUE XIAOCHEN SUN WENFU ZHANG | 2021 | Photonics Research2021,9,6: | 6
Clinical applications of exosome membrane proteins显示文摘Extracellular vesicles(EVs)are small membranous particles that can mediate cell-to-cell communication and which are divided into at least three categories according to their subcellular origin and size:exosomes, microvesicles, and apoptotic bodies.Exosomes are the smallest(30–150 nm)of these EVs,and play an important role in EV-mediated cell-to-cell interactions,by transferring proteins, nucleic acids and, lipids from their parental cells to adjacent or distant cells to alter their phenotypes. Most exosome studies in the past two decades have focused on their nucleic acid composition and their transfer ofmRNAs and microRNAs to neighboring cells. However, exosomes also carry specific membrane proteins that can identify the physiological and pathological states of their parental cells or indicate their preferential target cells or tissues.Exosome membrane protein expression can also be directly employed or modified to allow exosomes to serve as drug delivery systems and therapeutic platforms, including in targeted therapy approaches. This review will briefly summarize information on exosome membrane proteins components and their role in exosome–cell interactions, including proteins associated with specific cell-interactions and diseases, and the potential for using exosome membrane proteins in therapeutic targeting approaches. | Qian Hu Hang Su Juan Li Christopher Lyon Wenfu Tang Meihua Wan Tony Ye Hu | 2020 | Precision Clinical Medicine2020,3,1: | 6
Vibration suppression of a large flexible spacecraft for on-orbit operation显示文摘Flexible appendages, such as solar panels, communication antennas and other large structures, are mounted on the base of a space robot and target satellite. The vibration of the flexible structure is excited by operations of a space manipulator. It is very challenging to control the vibration of large flexible appendages for on-orbit operation and, especially when the manipulator operates a non-cooperative target with unknown structural parameters and vibration information. In this study, a hybrid control method is proposed based on wave-based control and PD control methods to control the motion of a manipulator while suppressing the vibration of appendages. First, the rigid-flexible coupled dynamic model of a compounded system is established. This is followed by designing a hybrid control strategy combining wave-based control and PD control for restto-rest maneuvers based on the characteristics of the compounded system. Finally, the simulation of a 3D compounded system is provided to verify the effectiveness of the presented approach. The simulation results indicate that the space robot can successfully berth the target while suppressing the vibrations of the structure. | Deshan MENG Houde LIU Yanan LI Wenfu XU Bin LIANG | 2017 | Science China(Information Sciences)2017,60,5: | 6

The parame-ters of rice ideal panicle type for Liaoning were preliminarily established as follows: Panicle length <17 cm, neck-panicle curvature <40°, neck panicle length 3―4 cm, neck diameter >2 mm, large vascular bundle and primary branch >15 pieces/panicle, primary branch grain >80 grains/panicle, secondary branch grains concentrating in the middle and upper parts of panicle axis, and panicle type index >0.5. In addition, the possibility of achieving unity of grain yield and quality at a still higher level by creating an ideal panicle type was explored. | XU Zhengjin CHEN Wenfu ZHANG Longbu YANG Shouren | 2005 | Chinese Science Bulletin2005,50,19: | 6 |
Pantograph-catenary electrical contact system of high-speed railways:recent progress, challenges, and outlooks显示文摘As the unique power entrance, the pantograph-catenary electrical contact system maintains the efficiency and reliability of power transmission for the high-speed train.Along with the fast development of high-speed railways all over the world, some commercialized lines are built for covering the remote places under harsh environment, especially in China;these environmental elements including wind, sand, rain, thunder, ice and snow need to be considered during the design of the pantograph-catenary system. The pantograph-catenary system includes the pantograph, the contact wire and the interface—pantograph slide. As the key component, this pantograph slide plays a critical role in reliable power transmission under dynamic condition. The fundamental material characteristics of the pantograph slide and contact wire such as electrical conductivity, impact resistance, wear resistance, etc.,directly determine the sliding electrical contact performance of the pantograph-catenary system;meanwhile, different detection methods of the pantograph-catenary system are crucial for the reliability of service and maintenance. In addition, the challenges brought from extreme operational conditions are discussed, taking the Sichuan-Tibet Railway currently under construction as a special example with the high-altitude climate. The outlook for developing the ultra-high-speed train equipped with the novel pantograph-catenary system which can address the harsher operational environment is also involved. This paper has provided a comprehensive review of the high-speed railway pantograph-catenary systems, including its progress, challenges, outlooks in the history and future. | Guangning Wu Keliang Dong Zhilei Xu Song Xiao Wenfu Wei Huan Chen Jie Li Zhanglin Huang Jingwei Li Guoqiang Gao Guozheng Kang Chuanjun Tu Xingyi Huang | 2022 | Railway Engineering Science2022,30,4: | 5
