| 1 | Phase angle obtained by bioelectrical impedance analysis independently predicts mortality in patients with cirrhosis显示文摘AIM To evaluate the prognostic value of the phase angle(PA)obtained from bioelectrical impedance analysis(BIA) for mortality prediction in patients with cirrhosis. METHODS In total, 134 male cirrhotic patients prospectively completed clinical evaluations and nutritional assessment by BIA to obtain PAs during a 36-mo follow-up period. Mortality risk was analyzed by applying the PA cutoff point recently proposed as a malnutrition marker(PA ≤ 4.9°) in Kaplan-Meier curves and multivariate Cox regression models. RESULTS The patients were divided into two groups according to the PA cutoff value(PA > 4.9°, n = 73; PA ≤ 4.9°, n = 61). Weight, height, and body mass index were similar in both groups, but patients with PAs > 4.9° were younger and had higher mid-arm muscle circumference, albumin, and handgrip-strength values and lower severe ascites and encephalopathy incidences, interleukin(IL)-6/IL-10 ratios and C-reactive protein levels than did patients with PAs ≤ 4.9°(P ≤ 0.05). Forty-eight(35.80%) patients died due to cirrhosis, with a median of 18 mo(interquartile range, 3.3-25.6 mo) follow-up until death. Thirty-one(64.60%) of these patients were from the PA ≤ 4.9° group. PA ≤ 4.9° significantly and independently affected the mortality model adjusted for Model for End-Stage Liver Disease score and age(hazard ratio = 2.05, 95%CI: 1.11-3.77, P = 0.021). In addition, Kaplan-Meier curves showed that patients with PAs ≤ 4.9° were significantly more likely to die. CONCLUSION In male patients with cirrhosis, the PA ≤ 4.9° cutoff was associated independently with mortality and identified patients with worse metabolic, nutritional, and disease progression profiles. | 3 | Bone marrow-derived monocyte infusion improves hepatic fibrosis by decreasing osteopontin,TGF-β1,IL-13 and oxidative stress显示文摘AIM To evaluate the therapeutic effects of bone marrowderived CD11b+CD14+ monocytes in a murine model of chronic liver damage. METHODS Chronic liver damage was induced in C57BL/6 mice by administration of carbon tetrachloride and ethanol for 6 mo. Bone marrow-derived monocytes isolated by immunomagnetic separation were used for therapy. The cell transplantation effects were evaluated by morphometry,biochemical assessment,immunohistochemistry and enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. RESULTS CD11b+CD14+ monocyte therapy significantly reduced liver fibrosis and increased hepatic glutathione levels. Levels of pro-inflammatory cytokines,including tumor necrosis factor-α,interleukin(IL)-6 and IL-1β,in addition to pro-fibrotic factors,such as IL-13,transforming growth factor-β1 and tissue inhibitor of metalloproteinase-1 also decreased,while IL-10 and matrix metalloproteinase-9 increased in the monocytetreated group. CD11b+CD14+ monocyte transplantation caused significant changes in the hepatic expression of α-smooth muscle actin and osteopontin. | 4 | Implications of safety requirements for the treatment of THMC processes in geological disposal systems for radioactive waste显示文摘The mission of nuclear safety authorities in national radioactive waste disposal programmes is to ensure that people and the environment are protected against the hazards of ionising radiations emitted by the waste.It implies the establishment of safety requirements and the oversight of the activities of the waste management organisation in charge of implementing the programme.In Belgium,the safety requirements for geological disposal rest on the following principles:defence-in-depth,demonstrability and the radiation protection principles elaborated by the International Commission on Radiological Protection(ICRP).Applying these principles requires notably an appropriate identification and characterisation of the processes upon which the safety functions fulfilled by the disposal system rely and of the processes that may affect the system performance.Therefore,research and development(R&D)on safety-relevant thermo-hydro-mechanical-chemical(THMC)issues is important to build confidence in the safety assessment.This paper points out the key THMC processes that might influence radionuclide transport in a disposal system and its surrounding environment,considering the dynamic nature of these processes.Their nature and significance are expected to change according to prevailing internal and external conditions,which evolve from the repository construction phase to the whole heatingecooling cycle of decaying waste after closure.As these processes have a potential impact on safety,it is essential to identify and to understand them properly when developing a disposal concept to ensure compliance with relevant safety requirements.In particular,the investigation of THMC processes is needed to manage uncertainties.This includes the identification and characterisation of uncertainties as well as for the understanding of their safety-relevance.R&D may also be necessary to reduce uncertainties of which the magnitude does not allow demonstrating the safety of the disposal system. | Frédéric Bernier Frank Lemy Pierre De Cannière Valéry Detilleux | 2017 | Journal of Rock Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering2017,9,3: | 3 |

| 7 | First characterization of endophytic Corynespora cassiicola isolates with variant cassiicolin genes recovered from rubber trees in Brazil显示文摘Corynespora cassiicola is the causal agent of Corynespora Leaf Fall(CLF)disease.CLF is one of the most important fungal diseases of rubber trees in Asia and Africa but disease outbreaks have not been reported in South America.Cassiicolin,a small cysteine-rich glycoprotein secreted by the pathogenic C.cassiicola isolate CCP,was previously identified as a potential disease effector in rubber tree.Recently,the cassiicolin-encoding gene(Cas1)was characterized and shown to be expressed in the early phase of infection.In this study,we investigated whether previously undetected strains of C.cassiicola are present in South American rubber plantations by examining the fungal endophyte population found in asymptomatic rubber tree leaves.Four isolates were identified as C.cassiicola.Genes encoding new forms of the cassiicolin precursor protein(Cas3 and Cas4)were identified from these isolates.Three of four isolates were able to induce symptoms on the cultivar they were isolated from in a detached leaf assay,with different kinetics and intensities.One isolate had the same pathogenicity profile as the pathogenic isolate CCP;the other two isolates developed symptoms late during the course of infection,suggesting saprotrophic capabilities.However,no Cas3 or Cas4 transcripts could be detected upon inoculation with the endophytic isolates,whereas the reference gene Cas1 was expressed upon inoculation with the CCP isolate.This work demonstrated that C.cassiicola is present in South America in an endophytic form and that it may evolve from an endophytic to a saprophytic or even potentially pathogenic life style. | Marine Déon Ana Scomparin Aude Tixier Carlos R.R.Mattos Thierry Leroy Marc Seguin Patricia Roeckel-Drevet Valérie Pujade-Renaud | 2012 | Fungal Diversity2012,,3: | 2 |
