Structure and regeneration status of Komto Afromontane moist forest, East Wollega Zone, west Ethiopia显示文摘We conducted a study in Komto Forest in East Wollega Zone, Oromia National Regional State, West Ethiopia for determining vegetation structure and regeneration status in this forest. We systematically sampled 53 quadrats (20 m × 20 m) along line transects radiating from the peak of Komto Mountain in eight directions. Vegetation parameters such as DBH, height, seedling and sapling density of woody species, and location and altitude of each quadrat were recorded. In total, 103 woody plant species of 87 genera and 45 families were identified. Analysis of selected tree species revealed different population structures. Generally, the forest was dominated by small trees and shrubs characteristic of secondary regeneration. Observations on the regeneration of the forest indicated that there are woody species that require urgent conservation measures. Based on the results of this study, we recommend detailed ecological studies of various environmental factors such as soil type and properties, and ethnobotanical studies to explore indigenous knowledge on uses of plants.Fekadu Gurmessa Teshome Soromessa Ensermu Kelbessa 2012Journal of Forestry Research2012,23,2:4
Effects of soil and water conservation practices on soil physicochemical properties in Gumara watershed, Upper Blue Nile Basin, Ethiopia显示文摘Background:Soil erosion is among the foremost causes of declining soil resources in Ethiopia, which in turn affect agricultural productivity. To limit this problem, for the last two decades in Gumara watershed, soil and water conservation measures have been practiced through free labor community mass-mobilization.However,their effect on soil fertility has not been evaluated. This study investigated the impact of implemented soil and water conservation measures on fertility improvement in the Gumara watershed. Both composite and core soil samples were taken from upstream, midstream, and downstream adjacent conserved and non-conserved cultivated and grazing plots.Selected soil fertility indicators were analyzed using standard laboratory procedures. Results:Soil and water conservation practices have resulted in a statistically significantly higher mean values of total nitrogen, exchangeable Na+and Mg2+at p<0.01,and of soil organic carbon and organic matter at p<0.05 in the watershed. The clay content, soil reaction, cation exchange capacity, and exchangeable K+showed nonsignificant, but higher mean values in conserved plots.Furthermore, the effects of conservation practices on soil properties were found more effective in cultivated land uses as compared to that of grazing land uses. This is because conservation treatments had significant effects on organic carbon, total nitrogen, exchangeable Na+and Mg2+in cultivated land uses but only on exchangeable Na+in grazing land uses. The interaction effect of treatments and land uses did not reach a statistically significant result for any of the soil properties considered in this study. Conclusion:Conservation measures have important implications for improving soil fertility in the Gumara watershed. Therefore, proper guidance and follow-up,use of agro-forestry and grass strips, and maintenance are required for the watershed’s sustainability and good soil conditions.Mengie Belayneh Teshome Yirgu Dereje Tsegaye 2019Ecological Processes2019,8,1:3
Conversion of savanna rangelands to bush dominated landscape in Borana,Southern Ethiopia显示文摘Introduction:Analyzing trends of land use systems and the changes occurred overtime is an effective way of assessing the impacts of land use/land cover(LULC)changes on ecosystem function. It provides important insights for understanding the spatial patterns of land use processes. The rangelands of southern Ethiopia are adversely affected by increased human population pressure, encroachment of crop cultivation, and bush encroachment.Hence,it is vital to understand the trends of rangeland vegetation cover dynamics. Methods:This paper evaluates land use/land cover changes and spatial patterns between 1987 and 2003 in Yabelo(5426 km2),Borena rangelands of southern Ethiopia. We used a combination of three Landsat Thematic Mapper(TM)1987,Landsat TM 1995 and Enhanced Thematic Mapper Plus(ETM+)2003,and local perceptions.A pixelbased supervised classification with maximum likelihood classifier was used to classify images. The accuracy of classification was assessed for 1987(81.8%),1995(84.6%),and 2003(81.3%).Results:The results showed that the Borana rangelands had undergone substantial changes during the last 16 years.Between 1987 and 2003,we observed a considerable increase in woodland cover(11.7%),bushland cover(17%),cultivated land(72.5%),and settlements(79.8%).The results showed a rapid decline in grassland cover(7.7%),shrubby grassland cover(86%),and bareland(0.7%).The spatial pattern analysis indicate that the Borana rangeland was fragmented and characterized by the proliferation of large numbers of patches with a decline in patch index, increased patch density, and irregular shape of patches within a landscape.Local communities’perceptions indicate that recurrent drought, increased human population size, and expansion of cultivation were largely responsible for the observed LULC changes in the study area. Conclusions:LULC changes contribute to rangeland degradation and weaken the traditional practices of rangeland management. We suggest appropriate management measures to halt the impact of disturbances on LULC dynamics and its implication on the livelihoods of the Borana pastoralists.Teshome Abate Ayana Angassa 2016Ecological Processes2016,5,1:3
Allometric equations for aboveground biomass estimation of Olea europaea L.subsp.cuspidata in Mana Angetu Forest显示文摘Introduction:African wild olive,Olea europaea L.subsp.cuspidata(Wall.ex G.Don)Cif.,L‘Olivicoltore is widely distributed in dry forest and forest margins, often with Juniperus procera,in east Africa and Ethiopia. It reaches southern Africa, also India and China, ranging from tall trees to stunted shrubs.Does best in good forest soil, but hardy and drought resistant once established, even in poor soils. It is used for firewood, charcoal, poles, posts, timber(furniture, carving, floors, and paneling),medicine(stem, bark, and leaves),bee forage, milk flavoring(smoking wood),toothbrushes(twigs),and walking sticks.Although the species has many economic and ecological functions, its environmental uses like carbon storage and climate change mitigation are less assessed. Therefore, the objective of the study was to develop species-specific allometric equations for O.europaea L.subsp.cuspidata using semi-destructive method and evaluate allometric models for estimating the aboveground biomass(AGB).Results and Discussions:After all the necessary biomass calculations were done, seven AGB equations were developed. These regression equations relate AGB with diameter at breast height(DBH),height(H),and density(ρ)individually and in combination.Out of seven, four allometric equations were chosen based on goodness-of-fit statistics and three were rejected. The selected models were tested for accuracy based on observed data. The best models selected have higher R2-adj and lower residual standard error and Akaike information criterion than rejected equations. The relations for all selectedmodels are significant(p<0.000),which showed strong correlation of AGB with selected dendrometric variables.Accordingly, the AGB was strongly correlated with DBH and was not significantly correlated with wood density and height individually in O.europaea L.subsp.cuspidata allometric equation development. In combination,AGB was strongly correlated with DBH and height;DBH and wood density;and the combination of DBH,height, and wood density.Species-specific equations are used for better carbon assessment than general equations.Birhanu Kebede Teshome Soromessa 2018Ecosystem Health and Sustainability2018,4,1:2
Tree species diversity predicts aboveground carbon storage through functional diversity and functional dominance in the dry evergreen Afromontane forest of Hararghe highland, Southeast Ethiopia显示文摘Background:Regarding the most important ecological challenges, scientists are increasingly debating the relationship between biodiversity and ecosystem function.Despite this, several experimental and theoretical researches have shown inconsistencies in biodiversity and ecosystem function relationships, supporting either the niche complementarity or selection effect hypothesis. The relationship between species diversity, functional diversity, and aboveground biomass carbon was investigated in this study employing standing aboveground carbon(AGC)stock as a proxy measure for ecosystem function. We hypothesized that(i)effects of diversity on AGC can be transmitted through functional diversity and functional dominance;(ii)effects of diversity on AGC would be greater for functional dominance than functional diversity;and(iii)effects of functional diversity and functional dominance on carbon stock varied with metrics and functional traits.Community-weighted means(CWM)of functional traits(wood density, specific leaf area, and maximum plant height)were calculated to assess functional dominance(selection effects). As for functional diversity(complementarity effects),multi-trait functional diversity(selection effects)indices were computed. We tested the first hypothesis using structural equation modeling. For the second hypothesis, the effects of environmental variables such as slope, aspect, and elevation were tested first, and separate linear mixed-effects models were fitted afterward for functional diversity, functional dominance, and the two together. Results:Results revealed that slope had a significant effect on aboveground carbon storage.Functional diversity and functional dominance were significant predictors of the aboveground carbon storage(22.4%)in the dry evergreen Afromontane forest. The effects of species richness on aboveground carbon storage were mediated by functional diversity and functional dominance of species. This shows that both the selection effects and the niche complementarity are important for aboveground carbon storage prediction. However, the functional diversity effects(niche complementarity)were greater than functional dominance effects(selection effects). Conclusions:Linking diversity and biodiversity components to aboveground carbon provides better insights into the mechanisms that explain variation in aboveground carbon storage in natural forests, which may help improve the prediction of ecosystem functions.Mengistu Teshome Wondimu Zebene Asfaw Nigussie Muktar Mohammed Yusuf 2021Ecological Processes2021,10,1:2

Zika virus infection, transmission, associated neurological disorders and birth abnormalities: A review of progress in research, priorities and knowledge gaps显示文摘On February 1, 2016, the World Health Organization declared that the cluster of microcephaly cases and other neurological disorders constitute public health emergency of international concern. Furthermore, few studies demonstrated that there was an increased evidence of causal relationship of Zika virus(ZIKAV) infection and microcephaly, birth abnormalities and neurological disorders such as Guillain–Barre′ syndrome.ZIKAV transmission occurs mainly by the bite of infected mosquitos(Aedes species), but there are also reports that infections could occur via the placenta, breast milk, saliva, blood transfusion and sex. This article reviews the global efforts, progress in scientific research to understand the pathogenesis of ZIKAV infection & disease, clinical presentations, congenital transmission and autoimmune neurological disorders. The paper further explores the knowledge gaps, future priority research agenda for strategic response including vector control and prevention. We conducted a systematic literature review to synthesise available evidence on ZIKAV infection and its vector and host interaction from electronic databases.Yitades Gebre Nikkiah Forbes Teshome Gebre 2016Asian Pacific Journal of Tropical Biomedicine2016,6,10:1
