| 1 | Hierarchical activation of compartmentalized pools of AMPK depends on severity of nutrient or energy stress显示文摘AMPK, a master regulator of metabolic homeostasis, is activated by both AMP-dependent and AMP-independent mechanisms. The conditions under which these different mechanisms operate, and their biological implications are unclear. Here, we show that, depending on the degree of elevation of cellular AMP, distinct compartmentalized pools of AMPK are activated, phosphorylating different sets of targets. Low glucose activates AMPK exclusively through the AMP-independent, AXIN-based pathway in lysosomes to phosphorylate targets such as ACC1 and SREBP1c, exerting early anti-anabolic and pro-catabolic roles. Moderate increases in AMP expand this to activate cytosolic AMPK also in an AXIN-dependent manner. In contrast, high concentrations of AMP, arising from severe nutrient stress, activate all pools of AMPK independently of AXIN. Surprisingly, mitochondrion-localized AMPK is activated to phosphorylate ACC2 and mitochondrial fission factor (MFF) only during severe nutrient stress. | 4 | Predicting the potential geographic distribution of Bactrocera bryoniae and Bactrocera neohumeralis(Diptera: Tephritidae) in China using MaxEnt ecological niche modeling显示文摘Bactrocera bryoniae and Bactrocera neohumeralis are highly destructive and major biosecurity/quarantine pests of fruit and vegetable in the tropical and subtropical regions in the South Pacific and Australia.Although these pests have not established in China,precautions must be taken due to their highly destructive nature.Thus,we predicted the potential geographic distribution of B.bryoniae and B.neohumeralis across the world and in particular China by ecological niche modeling of the Maximum Entropy(Max Ent)model with the occurrence records of these two species.Bactrocera bryoniae and B.neohumeralis exhibit similar potential geographic distribution ranges across the world and in China,and each species was predicted to be able to distribute to over 20%of the globe.Globally,the potential geographic distribution ranges for these two fruit fly species included southern Asia,the central and the southeast coast of Africa,southern North America,northern and central South America,and Australia.While within China,most of the southern Yangtze River area was found suitable for these species.Notably,southern China was considered to have the highest risk of B.bryoniae and B.neohumeralis invasions.Our study identifies the regions at high risk for potential establishment of B.bryoniae and B.neohumeralis in the world and in particular China,and informs the development of inspection and biosecurity/quarantine measures to prevent and control their invasions. | Jing Wan QI Guo-jun MA Jun Yonglin REN WANG Rui Simon MCKIRDY | 2020 | Journal of Integrative Agriculture2020,19,8: | 5 |
| 5 | Accelerated design and characterization of non-uniform cellular materials via a machine-learning based framework显示文摘Cellular materials,widely found in engineered and nature systems,are highly dependent on their geometric arrangement.A nonuniform arrangement could lead to a significant variation of mechanical properties while bringing challenges in material design.Here,this proof-of-concept study demonstrates a machine-learning based framework with the capability of accelerated characterization and pattern generation.Results showed that the proposed framework is capable of predicting the mechanical response curve of any given geometric pattern within the design domain under appropriate neural network architecture and parameters.Additionally,the framework is capable of generating matching geometric patterns for a targeted response through a databank constructed from our machine learning model.The accuracy of the predictions was verified with finite element simulations and the sources of errors were identified.Overall,our machine-learning based framework can boost the design efficiency of cellular materials at unit level,and open new avenues for the programmability of function at system level. | Chunping Ma Zhiwei Zhang Benjamin Luce Simon Pusateri Binglin Xie Mohammad H.Rafiei Nan Hu | 2020 | npj Computational Materials2020,,1: | 3 |

| 7 | Data-Driven Discovery in Mineralogy: Recent Advances in Data Resources, Analysis, and Visualization显示文摘Large and growing data resources on the diversity, distribution, and properties of minerals are ushering in a new era of data-driven discovery in mineralogy. The most comprehensive international mineral database is the IMA database, which includes information on more than 5400 approved mineral species and their properties, and the mindat.org data source, which contains more than 1 million species/locality data on minerals found at more than 300 000 localities. Analysis and visualization of these data with diverse techniques—including chord diagrams, cluster diagrams, Klee diagrams, skyline diagrams, and varied methods of network analysis—are leading to a greater understanding of the co-evolving geosphere and biosphere. New data-driven approaches include mineral evolution, mineral ecology, and mineral network analysis—methods that collectively consider the distribution and diversity of minerals through space and time. These strategies are fostering a deeper understanding of mineral co-occurrences and, for the first time, facilitating predictions of mineral species that occur on Earth but have yet to be discovered and described. | Robert M.
