1The impact of iodinated X-ray contrast agents on formation and toxicity of disinfection by-products in drinking water显示文摘The presence of iodinated X-ray contrast media(ICM) in source waters is of high concern to public health because of their potential to generate highly toxic disinfection by-products(DBPs). The objective of this study was to determine the impact of ICM in source waters and the type of disinfectant on the overall toxicity of DBP mixtures and to determine which ICM and reaction conditions give rise to toxic by-products. Source waters collected from Akron,OH were treated with five different ICMs, including iopamidol, iopromide, iohexol,diatrizoate and iomeprol, with or without chlorine or chloramine disinfection. The reaction product mixtures were concentrated with XAD resins and the mammalian cell cytotoxicity and genotoxicity of the reaction mixture concentrates was measured. Water containing iopamidol generated an enhanced level of mammalian cell cytotoxicity and genotoxicity after disinfection. While chlorine disinfection with iopamidol resulted in the highest cytotoxicity overall, the relative iopamidol-mediated increase in toxicity was greater when chloramine was used as the disinfectant compared with chlorine. Four other ICMs(iopromide, iohexol, diatrizoate, and iomeprol) expressed some cytotoxicity over the control without any disinfection, and induced higher cytotoxicity when chlorinated. 2Distribution of different hepatitis C virus genotypes in patients with hepatitis C virus infection显示文摘AIM:To investigate the presence of mixed infection and discrepancy between hepatitis C virus(HCV) genotypes in plasma,peripheral blood mononuclear cells(PBMCs),and liver biopsy specimens.METHODS:From September 2008 up to April 2009,133 patients with chronic hepatitis C referred to Firouzgar Hospital for initiation of an antiviral therapy were recruited in the study.Five milliliters of peripheral blood was collected from each patient and liver biopsy was performed in those who gave consent or had indications.HCV genotyping was done using INNO-LiPATM HCV in serum,PBMCs,and liver biopsy specimens and then conf irmed by sequencing of 5'-UTR fragments.RESULTS:The mean age of patients was 30.3 ± 17.1 years.Multiple transfusion was seen in 124(93.2%) of patients.Multiple HCV genotypes were found in 3(2.3%) of 133 plasma samples,9(6.8%) of 133 PBMC samples,and 8(18.2%) of 44 liver biopsy specimens.It is notable that the different genotypes found in PBMCs were not the same as those found in plasma and liver biopsy specimens.CONCLUSION:Our study shows that a signif icant proportion of patients with chronic hepatitis C are affected by multiple HCV genotypes which may not be detectable only in serum of patients.Farah Bokharaei Salim Hossein Keyvani Afsaneh Amiri Fatemeh Jahanbakhsh Sef idi Ramin Shakeri Farhad Zamani 2010World Journal of Gastroenterology2010,16,16:5
3Effect of land-use changes on chemical and physical properties of soil in western Iran(Zagros oak forests)显示文摘The consequence of land-use change from forest to agriculture and other uses has become one of the world’s greatest concerns.The soil,one of the most important components of forests and containing all the required plant nutrients as soluble ions,is highly impacted by these changes.Because vast areas of the Zagros forests in western Iran have changed in use during the last few decades,the present study investigated the effects of landuse changes of forest area to agriculture,orchard,and agroforestry on soil chemical and physical properties.Soil was sampled at four land-use areas:less-disturbed forest areas(control)and agricultural,orchard,and agroforestry areas.Among each of the two forest-use areas(agroforestry and orchard),we selected five trees with similar-sized crowns and sampled under each tree crown at 0-15 and>15-30 cm depths.Five soil samples also were taken in agriculture area at each depth.The findings indicated that during land-use changes,soil sand particles decreased,and clay and silt particles of soil increased,resulting in a fine soil texture.Moreover,the amount of nitrogen(N),phosphorus(P),organic carbon(OC),and electrical conductivity(EC)of soil decreased at both depths due to the decrease in organic matter.Soil pH and magnesium(Mg)level rose during land-use change at both depths except at agricultural sites.Soil potassium(K)content decreased during agricultural use due to the elimination of tree cover.The level of K decreased only at the depth of 0-15 cm because of K dependency on parent materials.Generally,most soil nutrients were affected by plant removal in the conversion.Forest and agricultural soil are distinguishable by their properties,while land-uses such as agroforestry-orchard separated from the others.Soil nutrients were severely affected by the decrease and elimination of tree cover,plowing,and continuous harvesting,resulting in a decline in soil quality and fertility.Kyumars Mohmmadi Samani Narges Pordel Vahid Hosseini Zahed Shakeri 2020Journal of Forestry Research2020,31,2:3
4Effects of rhubarb(Rheum ribes L.)syrup on dysenteric diarrhea in children:a randomized,double-blind,placebo-controlled trial显示文摘BACKGROUND:Rheum ribes L.is a plant native to China,Iran,Turkey,India,and a few other countries.Antidiarrheal activity is considered to be one of its important properties according to various systems of traditional medicine.An increasing rate of bacterial resistance to antibiotics has led to treatment failure in some cases of shigellosis in children,and underlines a need for safe,efficient and valid options.OBJECTIVE:The purpose of this study is to evaluate the efficacy of R.ribes syrup as a complementary medicine for treatment of shigellosis in children.DESIGN,SETTING,PARTICIPANTS AND INTERVENTIONS:This randomized,doubleblind,placebocontrolled trial started with a group of 150 children aged between 12–72 months with suspected Shigella dysentery.R.ribes syrup or placebo syrup was administered to the intervention and control groups,respectively for 5 days.In addition,the standard antibiotic treatment(ceftriaxone for the first 3 days and cefixime syrup for 2 further days)was administered to both groups.MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES:Body temperature,abdominal pain,need for antipyretics,defecation frequency,stool volume and consistency and microscopic stool examination were recorded as outcome measures.Any observed adverse effects were also recorded.RESULTS:Mean duration of fever and diarrhea in the R.ribes group was significantly lower than that in the placebo group(P=0.016 and 0.001,respectively).In addition,patients in the R.ribes group showed shorter duration of need for antipyretics and shorter duration of abdominal pain(P=0.012 and 0.001,respectively).However,there were no significant differences between the two groups regarding the microscopic stool analyses.Furthermore,no adverse effect was reported.CONCLUSION:R.ribes syrup can be recommended as a complementary treatment for children with Shigella dysentery.Ali Khiveh Mohammad Hashem Hashempur Mehrdad Shakiba Mohammad Hassan Lotfi Afsaneh Shakeri Seid Kazem Kazemeini Zohre Mousavi Marzie Jabbari Mohammad Kamalinejad Majid Emtiazy 2017Journal of Integrative Medicine2017,15,5:3
5Gluten sensitive enteropathy in patients with iron deficiency anemia of unknown origin显示文摘AIM: To determine the prevalence of gluten sensitive enteropathy (GSE) in a large group of patients with iron deficiency anemia (IDA) of obscure origin. METHODS: In this cross-sectional study, patients with IDA of obscure origin were screened for GSE. Anti- endomysial antibody (EMA) and tissue transglutamin- ase antibody (tTG) levels were evaluated and duodenal biopsies were taken and scored according to the Marsh classification. The diagnosis of GSE was based on a positive serological test and abnormal duodenal histol- ogy. Gluten free diet (GFD) was advised for all the GSE patients. RESULTS: Of the 4120 IDA patients referred to our Hematology departments, 206 (95 male) patients were found to have IDA of obscure origin. Thirty out of 206 patients (14.6%) had GSE. The mean age of GSE pa- tients was 34.6 ± 17.03 (range 10-72 years). The female to male ratio was 1.3:1. Sixteen patients had Marsh 3,12 had Marsh 2, and 2 had Marsh 1 lesions. The sever- ity of anemia was in parallel with the severity of duode- nal lesions. Twenty-two GSE patients (73.3%) had no gastrointestinal symptoms. Fourteen GSE patients who adhered to GFD without receiving iron supplementation agreed to undergo follow up visits. After 6 mo of GFD, their mean hemoglobin levels (Hb) increased from 9.9 ± 1.6 to 12.8 ± 1.0 g/dL (P < 0.01). Interestingly, in 6 out of 14 patients who had Marsh 1/2 lesions (e.g. no villous atrophy) on duodenal biopsy, mean Hb increased from 11.0 ± 1.1 to 13.1 ± 1.0 g/dL (P < 0.01) while they did not receive any iron supplementation. CONCLUSION: There is a high prevalence (e.g. 14.6%) of GSE in patients with IDA of obscure origin. 6Pushover analysis of asymmetric-plan buildings based on distribution of the combined modal story shear and torsional moment显示文摘A pushover procedure with a load pattern based on the height-wise distribution of the combined modal story shear and torsional moment is proposed to estimate the seismic response of 3D asymmetric-plan building frames. Contribution of the higher modes and torsional response of asymmetric-plan buildings are incorporated into the proposed load pattern. The proposed pushover method is a single-run procedure, which enables tracing the nonlinear response of the structure during the analysis and averts the elusiveness of conducting multiple pushover analyses. The proposed method has been used to estimate the response of two moment-resisting building frames with 9 and 20 stories. 7Fabrication,microstructure,and optical properties of nanocrystalline transparent LAST glass ceramics containing CeO_2显示文摘In the present research, the effect of CeO2 dopant on the fabrication of transparent lithium aluminosilicate titanate(LAST) glass ceramics was investigated. Nanocrystalline β-quartz solid solution(s.s.) was observed to be the main phase crystallized in this system. Comparable refractive indices of the glassy matrix and β-quartz s.s., as well as the incorporation of very fine grains size were determined as the main reasons for retaining the transparency of the glass ceramics. CeO2 was introduced as a suitable optical agent, playing a role as a network modifier in the glass ceramics, because it does not accelerate the growth process and retards the extended growth of crystals. Optical investigations indicate that the Fermi energy level, direct and indirect band gaps, and Urbach energy decrease with increasing nanocrystal content in the glassy matrix of specimens, which can be related to the expansion of conduction band, the enhancement of ionic bonds in the crystal lattice, and the enhancement of structural arrangement degree, respectively.Mohammad Sadegh Shakeri 2014International Journal of Minerals,Metallurgy and Materials2014,21,4:2

9Effect of Y_2O_3 on the crystallization kinetics of TiO_2 nucleated LAS glass for the production of nanocrystalline transparent glass ceramics显示文摘Crystallization kinetics of metastable β-quartz solid solution as a desirable phase for the production of transparent lithium aluminosilicate (LAS) glass ceramics was investigated in the presence of Y2O3 . Accordingly, differential thermal analysis scans were performed thoroughly to study the mechanism of crystallization kinetics. The aim of this investigation is to discover the complicated mechanism of crystallization process in the presence of co-additives and accordingly find a way for increasing the transparency of glass ceramics. It is shown that the bulk (3D) growth is intensively increased by the enhancement of Y2O3 . Then again, reducing nucleation and increasing growth mechanisms were recognized for the LAS system in the presence of Y2O3 .
