1UV/Vis Characterization and Fate of Organic Amendment Fractions in a Dune Soil in Dakar, Senegal显示文摘The application of organic amendments on soils poor in organic matter(OM) can improve long-term soil fertility, but may also enhance the mineralization of native soil organic matter. Three organic amendments, compost, sewage sludge and horse manure, used by urban market gardeners in Dakar, Senegal were analyzed for their OM maturity. Their fate was evaluated in a 45-d agronomic trial in a sandy Arenosol with lettuce. In each case, water-extractable organic matter(WEOM) and humic-like substances(HLS)were isolated from raw amendments and amended soils, and characterized using ultraviolet-visible(UV/Vis) spectroscopy. Results highlighted the general more aromatic character of HLS and WEOM fractions extracted from compost compared to the other two amendments. When applied to soils, however, these differences were not clearly observed. The aromaticity and humification degree of the labile fraction(WEOM) increased with depth in the first 30 cm for all amendments. This indicated the high lixiviation rates that fresh OM underwent in the studied sandy soil. Finally, a statistical analysis of the results was able to discriminate between surface and deeper horizons and between amended- and non-amended soil samples. Spectroscopic indices showed indeed strong increase/decrease with depth linked with the mineralization/humification processes that the fresh OM from amendments underwent during the 45 d of the agronomic trial. 2高龄结直肠癌手术治疗的生存分析显示文摘目的对80岁以上高龄患者结直肠癌的临床与病理特点、手术方式和生存分析进行探讨。方法选择69例80岁以上的高龄结直肠癌患者,对其一般资料、临床表现、肿瘤病理特征、手术方式及术后并发症等进行回顾性分析。结果 45例(65.21%)合并其他疾病,主要为高血压、糖尿病、心血管疾病、肺部疾病、泌尿疾病及脑部疾病,TNMⅢ期28例(40.58%)、Ⅳ期17例(24.64%)。手术方式以根治性手术为主(67例),根治率达97.10%。术后1年、2年、3年的生存率分别为89.86%、69.57%、62.32%。生存分析显示肿瘤分期、手术根治性是影响生存率的主要因素,而单纯年龄因素对生存率没有显著影响。结论老年结直肠癌术前合并症相对多见,但肿瘤病理分化程度较高,恶性程度相对较低。高龄不是限制其手术治疗的主要因素,术前进行准确的分期评估、积极治疗合并疾病、加强围手术期监护、提高手术根治率以及加强术后护理,均有助于提高老年结直肠癌患者生存率和生活质量。Garba Seydou Aliou 韩俊毅 赵中辛 胡海 2016同济大学学报(医学版)2016,37,5:5

7Development of a data collection and management system in West Africa:challenges and sustainability显示文摘Background:Developing and sustaining a data collection and management system(DCMS)is difficult in malariaendemic countries because of limitations in internet bandwidth,computer resources and numbers of trained personnel.The premise of this paper is that development of a DCMS in West Africa was a critically important outcome of the West African International Centers of Excellence for Malaria Research.The purposes of this paper are to make that information available to other investigators and to encourage the linkage of DCMSs to international research and Ministry of Health data systems and repositories.Methods:We designed and implemented a DCMS to link study sites in Mali,Senegal and The Gambia.This system was based on case report forms for epidemiologic,entomologic,clinical and laboratory aspects of plasmodial infection and malarial disease for a longitudinal cohort study and included on-site training for Principal Investigators and Data Managers.Based on this experience,we propose guidelines for the design and sustainability of DCMSs in environments with limited resources and personnel.Results:From 2012 to 2017,we performed biannual thick smear surveys for plasmodial infection,mosquito collections for anopheline biting rates and sporozoite rates and year-round passive case detection for malarial disease in four longitudinal cohorts with 7708 individuals and 918 households in Senegal,The Gambia and Mali.Major challenges included the development of uniform definitions and reporting,assessment of data entry error rates,unstable and limited internet access and software and technology maintenance.Strengths included entomologic collections linked to longitudinal cohort studies,on-site data centres and a cloud-based data repository.Conclusions:At a time when research on diseases of poverty in low and middle-income countries is a global priority,the resources available to ensure accurate data collection and the electronic availability of those data remain severely limited.Based on our experience,we suggest the development of a regional DCMS.This approach is more economical than separate data centres and has the potential to improve data quality by encouraging shared case definitions,data validation strategies and analytic approaches including the molecular analysis of treatment successes and failures.Jeffrey G.Shaffer Seydou O.Doumbia Daouda Ndiaye Ayouba Diarra Jules F.Gomis Davis Nwakanma Ismaela Abubakar Abdullahi Ahmad Muna Affara Mary Lukowski Clarissa Valim James C.Welty Frances J.Mather Joseph Keating Donald J.Krogstad 2018Infectious Diseases of Poverty2018,7,1:1

14Effective Control of Aflatoxin Contamination in Staple Maize Food Crop in Sub-Saharan Africa: A Review of Current Pre- and Postharvest Low-Cost Technologies and Perspectives显示文摘Mycotoxins/aflatoxins contaminations in some food commodities seriously impact human and animal health and reduce the commercial value of crops. Mycotoxins are toxic secondary metabolites produced by fungi that colonize agricultural commodities. Pre- and postharvest contamination of aflatoxin is a major health concern in Africa where maize production and consumption have increased significantly over the years. Efforts to reduce aflatoxin in maize through various strategies such as breeding for resistance, improved agronomic practices, cultural harvesting and postharvest handling practices, and the use of bio-control agents are available. Some of these control practices are not well known by smallholder farmers. Important pre- and postharvest practices, in addition to the stringent food safety regulations and monitoring, are not undertaken as a result of various factors such as a lack of awareness and training, and the high cost of awareness and sensitization drives. The climate changes scenarios including El Nino are also factors to be considered. However, continued use of sustainable and effective low-cost management practices by small scale farmers are possible ways of reducing the risk of aflatoxin contamination. This review attempts to highlight low-cost, affordable and practical management options at pre- and postharvest in maize. Sound low-cost management practices are possible ways of reducing the risk for fungal infection and aflatoxin contamination that are relevant to the Africa context. 17Implementing uterine balloon tamponade(UBT)device for immediate postpartum hemorrhage management:Leveraging resource allocation and highlighting noteworthy experiences显示文摘Background The use of uterine balloon tamponade(UBT)devices for intrauterine packing and management of vaginal bleeding by uterine atony has shown promising results in improving the quality of care and reducing maternal mortality.Objective This report aims to provide an overview of progress made in implementing UBT devices in northern Cote d'Ivoire.Material and methods A four-year retrospective study was conducted in the North-East(163,645),North-Center(351,909),and North-West(57,983).In 2017,UBT was adopted by members of the healthcare system.Subsequently,5 national and 32 regional trainers have been trained.The training session was a theoretical and practical program with a low simulator.UBT is a male condom tied to a urinary catheter,filled with liquid.Positive outcomes included stopping bleeding,avoiding the need for surgery,and preventing maternal deaths(MD).In 2018,3,515 UBT devices were distributed.In 2019,monitoring tools and transmission circuits of the data were validated.In 2020,the collection of data and local manufacturing was launched.Results During the process,978 health workers,mainly midwife(52.0%)and nurses(32.2%)out of the 1,295 assigned were trained.The number of trained individuals decreased from 209 in 2019 to 160 in 2020.A total of 1,715 UBT devices were locally manufactured,adding to the existing gift of 5,080 devices,with total availability of 6,795.The distribution of devices increased from 2017 to 2019 but decreased in 2020.Success rates increased from 87.3%in 2017(365/418)to 95.0%in 2019(556/585)and slightly decreased in 2020 to 98.0%(681/695).Adverse outcomes(144/2,193),included MD(35/2,193)and medical evacuation to the surgical center(109/2,193).Conclusion The implementation of UBT in northern Cote d'Ivoire successfully reduced maternal death rates caused by immediate post-partum hemorrhage(IPPH).However,to ensure sustainability,further improvements are needed,including increased monitoring,ongoing training,and device availability.Mian Dehi Boston Guie Privat Apollinaire Horo Aka Edele Kouakou Konan Virginie Aholoupke Bruno KonéSeydou Rochon Sarah Boni Serge Burke Thomas F 2023Gynecology and Obstetrics Clinical Medicine2023,3,3:0
18Analysis of Water Resources Vulnerability Assessment Tools显示文摘Water resources face many pressures and stresses around the world.Assessing the vulnerability of water resources is,therefore,increasingly an essential practice in water resources management.Several studies of water resources vulnerability have been carried out around the world during the last three decades.Thus,the main objective of this study was to analyze water resources vulnerability assessment tools and identify the methodological trend of water resources vulnerability assessment at the local level in existing literature.To achieve this objective,the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses(PRISMA)method has been applied to include or exclude articles.Articles on water vulnerability numbering 374 were preselected in the ScienceDirect and the Google Scholar databases.Only 32 out of the 374 articles met the inclusion criteria defined for the analysis.The results show that China(21.9%),U.S.A.(9.4%)and Canada(6.3%)are the most active countries publishing water resources vulnerability assessments.Some 191 vulnerability indicators from the 32 articles were classified into five categories of factors:physical factors(33.5%),socio-economic factors(28.3%),environmental or eco-environmental factors(25.1%),institutions and governance factors(7.3%)and infrastructure factors(5.8%).This study shows that almost half of the studies(47%)considered all five categories of factors,9.4%considered four categories of factors,6.3%considered three categories of factors,28%used two types of factors and 9.4%considered only one category.Researchers have used several methods to assess water resources vulnerability:overlay and index methods(59.4%),process-based models(12.5%),statistical methods(9.4%),overlay and index methods plus process-based model(9.4%),overlay and index methods plus statistical methods(6.3%)and statistical methods plus process-based models(3.1%).Geographic information system(GIS)is an important tool in assessing the vulnerability of water resources with almost 60%of the studies using it at some stage of the assessment.In recent years,there is an increasing trend toward conceptualizing the vulnerability of water resources in a holistic way.Kanga IdéSoumaila Albachir Seydou Niandou Mustapha Naimi Chikhaoui Mohamed Keith Schimmel 2019Journal of Agricultural Science and Technology(B)2019,9,2:0
19A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis of Water Quality Indices显示文摘Water quality indices (WQI) are useful tools for indicating the suitability of water for an expected use. However, they can suffer from some problems. The objective of this paper was to analyze the development of WQI to determine which parameters are used in water quality assessment and to discuss the characteristics of WQI. To screen articles on WQI, the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) method is applied to include or exclude articles. Four necessary steps are needed to design WQI: parameter selection, standardization, weighting and aggregation. A set of six methods of aggregations of sub-indices are identified: the arithmetic mean, the geometric mean, the root square, the logarithmic function, the fuzzy inference and the minimum operator. The problems encountered for the overall index are different according to the form of aggregation. They are eclipsing, ambiguity, rigidity or flexibility, adaptability and compensation. The chemical parameters (70%) are the most used in the development of WQI with the physical parameters used at 24% and the biological parameters at 6%. 20A study of the factors affecting mobile money penetration rates in the West African Economic and Monetary Union (WAEMU) compared with East Africa显示文摘According to the 2017 Global Financial Inclusion(Global Findex)database,the average penetration rate of mobile money accounts in East Africa is higher than that of the WAEMU.This study attempts to understand the factors driving the adoption and the use of mobile financial services in the WAEMU compared to East Africa.To achieve this,micro-level data from the 2017 Global Findex database are used to perform probit and multinomial logit estimations.The findings reveal that the same determinants influence the adoption and use of mobile money accounts across the populations of both groups of countries,specifically those related to the least vulnerable social categories(i.e.,males,older,more educated,richer and part of the workforce).Therefore,in comparison to East Africa,the delay in the penetration of mobile money accounts observed in the WAEMU may be attributed to insufficient policies for increasing the awareness of the benefits of mobile financial services.The study recommends that governments in WAEMU countries promote the use of mobile money accounts among the working-age population(adults aged between 25 and 64)through the improvement of individual income level,and the introduction of incentives into the education system to encourage their population to attain higher levels of education.Sionfou Seydou Coulibaly 2021Financial Innovation2021,7,1:0
