| 1 | Removal of heavy metals from mine water by cyanobacterial calcification显示文摘The influence of different illumination intensities on cyanobacterial calcification induced removal of heavy metals from contaminated mine water was studied. Cyanobacterial calcification experiments were performed using a growth medium intended to simulate contaminated mine water. The results indicate that calcification can promote the removal of heavy metal ions. As the illumination intensity became stronger calcification rates increased and the removal of Zn2+ and Cd2+ became more obvious. When the illumination intensity was 10000 lux the removal of Pb2+ was the largest observed: stronger or weaker illumination reduced the amount of lead removed. The removal of three different heavy metals complies with an index function. | 2 | Piezoluminescent devices by designing array structures显示文摘Mechanoluminescence has attracted increasing attentions because it can convert the kinetic energy during human daily motions into light to be used in sensors and displays. However, its practical applications are still hindered by the weak brightness and limited color while under large forces. Herein, we developed novel piezoluminescent devices(PLDs) which could effectively emit visible light under low pressing forces through the stress-concentration and enhancing deformation on the basis of carefully-designed array structures. The emitting colors were also tunable by using bilayer luminescent film under different pressures. | 5 | Value of Contrast-enhanced Ultrasound in Evaluating Synovitis and Predicting Recurrent Joint Bleeding of Hemophilia显示文摘Objective Contrast-enhanced ultrasound(CEUS)is advantageous for evaluating microcirculation,and has been applied to assess arthritis in previous studies.However,CEUS examinations have not been studied for hemophilia arthritis.Hemophilia arthritis is different from other arthritis,because it is induced by spontaneous joint bleeding.Hence,CEUS may have special value in evaluating hemophilia arthritis.The present study assessed the value of CEUS in evaluating synovial hypertrophy and predicting recurrent joint bleeding in severe hemophilia A patients.Methods From August 2016 to January 2017,81 severe hemophilia A patients,who were referred to our hospital for ultrasound joint assessment with conventional ultrasound,were enrolled.Among these 81 patients,46 patients consented for CEUS examinations on the same day.Results Compared to color Doppler flow imaging(CDFI),four more joints presented with a blood flow signal under CEUS mode.In addition,the synovial hypertrophy measured by CEUS was thicker than that measured by conventional ultrasound.The ultrasound scores(including the total grey-scale ultrasound score,joint effusion/hemarthrosis,synovial hypertrophy,CDFI semi-quantitative score,and CEUS semi-quantitative score)were significantly higher in the joint bleeding group than in the no joint bleeding group(P<0.05).Furthermore,these ultrasound scores were positively correlated with the joint bleeding frequency,and had the highest correlation with the CEUS score(r=0.620,P<0.05).Conclusion CEUS can more accurately assess the degree of synovial hypertrophy and vascularization,and diagnose synovitis,when compared to conventional ultrasound.In addition,CEUS appears to be essential for evaluating the possibility of recurrent joint bleeding,and providing more reliable evidence for individualized treatment. | Fei MA Ya-ru ZHANG Koon Hung LUKE Hao LIU Wan-xian LUO Li ZHANG Li-ling XIAO Mei YI Yang GAO Wei-zhen WANG Shi-qiu QIU Xiao-qin FENG Jing SUN Ying-jia LI | 2022 | Current Medical Science2022,42,2: | 1 |

| 7 | Anthropogenic pressures increase extinction risk of an isolated Asian elephant(Elephas maximus)population in southwestern China,as revealed by a combination of molecular-and landscape-scale approaches显示文摘Identification of the effect of anthropogenic threats on ecosystem is crucial.We used molecular tools and remote sensing to evaluate the population status of an isolated Asian elephant population in southwestern China in response to changes in habitat suitability between 1989 and 2019.A total of 22 unique genotypes were identified from 117 dung samples collected between March and June 2018 using microsatellite DNA analysis,including 13 males and 9 females.Based on the size of fecal boli,1 animal was a juvenile,9 were subadults,and 12 were adults,indicating that recruitment was limited.The effective population size was small(15.3)but there was no signature of a recent population bottleneck.We observed a low genetic diversity(He=0.46±0.05)and a high level of inbreeding(Fis of 0.43±0.11),suggesting low population viability and high risk of extinction.In total,these elephants lost nearly two thirds(62%)of their habitat in 3 decades.The expansion of agriculture and rubber plantations followed by an increase in human settlements after 1989 increased the isolation of this population.We recommend that resettlement of 800 inhabitants of 2 villages and the abandonment of associated farmland and rubber plantations would make an additional 20 km2 of suitable habitat available.This could allow a population increase of 14 elephants,possibly by translocating individuals from elsewhere in China.Ourfindings can be applied to the management and conservation of other fragmented populations in China or in other range countries of Asian elephants. | Ying CHEN Yakuan SUN Luciano ATZENI Luke GIBSON Mei HUA Keyu LI Kun SHI David DUDGEON | 2022 | Integrative Zoology2022,17,6: | 1 |

| 9 | Urinary Creatinine-Skeletal Muscle Mass Method:A Prediction Equation Based on Computerized Axial Tomography显示文摘A classic body composition method is estimation of total body skeletal muscle mass (SM, kg) from 24 h urinary creatinine excretion (Cr, g). Two types of prediction equations were suggested: one assumes a constant SM/Cr ratio; and the other assumes a highly variable SM/Cr ratio. We explored these two extreme possibilities by measuring SM with whole-body computerized axial tomography and collecting Cr during meat-free dietary conditions in 12 healthy young men. Prediction equations were developed in the men that fit these two equation types, SM = 21.8×Cr (SD and CV of SM/Cr ratio, 1.3 kg and 6.0%,respectively) and SM = 18.9 × Cr + 4.1 (r = 0.92, p = 2.55 × 10-5, and SEE = 1.9 kg).
