| 2 | Cytotoxic effect of Spirulina platensis extracts on human acute leukemia Kasumi-1 and chronic myelogenous leukemia K-562 cell lines显示文摘Objective: To evaluate the cytotoxic effects of Spirulina platensis extracts on acute leukemia Kasumi-1 and chronic leukemia K-562 cancer cell lines.Methods: Various concentrations of Spirulina platensis extracts(0.25–50.00 mg/m L)obtained with different solvents were used to treat cell lines for 72 h. For cytotoxic effect studies, cell viability test with trypan blue solution, MTT assay and microscopic cytomorphological assessment were done.Results: Spirulina extract obtained with 70% ethanol showed significant cytotoxicity in K562 and Kasumi-1 cell lines. With trypan blue solution, IC_(50) values were found to be4.64 mg/m L for K-562 and 3.68 mg/m L for Kusumi-1 cell lines. Spirulina aqueous extract also showed cytotoxicity with trypan blue method, at a slightly higher dose; where IC_(50) values were 12.68 mg/m L for K-562 and 2.13 mg/m L for Kusumi-1 cell lines. The IC_(50) values were found 0.40 mg/m L for K-562 and 0.31 mg/m L for Kusumi-1 cell lines for the 70% ethanol extract according to the MTT assay. Spirulina extract obtained with water also showed cytotoxicity but the dose was a little higher where IC_(50) values were15.77 mg/m L for K-562 and 9.44 mg/m L for Kusumi-1 cell lines. The effect of cytotoxicity with ethanol extract is quite comparable with that observed for cyclophosphamide, which is a chemical used as anticancer agent.Conclusions: The cytotoxicity exhibited by Spirulina extract to cancer cell lines might be due to the presence of phytopigments(carotenoids, chlorophyll, phycocyanin) as well as polysaccharides that were reported previously as constituents of the extract. | 3 | Textural and geochemical characteristics of off shore sediment of North Bay of Bengal:A statistical approach for marine metal pollution显示文摘Metal pollution study on sediments of North Bay of Bengal sediments presented in this paper is based on existing Lithostratigraphy of upstream,mineralogy and geochemical analysis of 42 sediment samples.The statistical analysis identifies the metal pollution as well as its apparent source in the off shore regions.Samples were analyzed for grain size,organic content and heavy metals(Fe,Mn,Cr,Cu,Ni,Pb,Cd,Zn and Co) using the sequential extraction method to evaluate geochemical processes and pollution load.In an effort to surmise anthropogenic input,several approaches including classification by quantitative indexes such as enrichment factor,contamination factor,degree of pollution,pollution load index and geo accumulation index,were attempted.Metal speciation results indicate high%of Cd in exchangeable fraction of Mahanadi transect sediments where as a considerable amount of oxidizable fraction of Cr was detected at Dhamra.Quantitative indexes place North Bay of Bengal under moderately polluted zone due to high level of Cd.Normalization of metals to Fe indicated relatively high enrichment factors for Cd and Cr.Factor analysis identified seven possible types of geochemical associations where sediment pH plays a major role for the heavy metal mobility.The higher Cd concentration in exchangeable fraction as well as the higher EF for Cd and Cr present in sediment may pose a risk of secondary water pollution under slightest disturbance in the geo-chemistry of sediments.Comparison study with available data of near costal zones and upstream stratigraphy revealed that open cast mining,overburden dumping,mineral based industrial effluents were the major source of pollution for catchment area contamination.Bay of Bengal is likely to face a serious threat of metal pollution with the present deposition rates unless rigorous pollution control norms are applied. | Sanghamitra Palleyi Sabnam Banoo Rabi Narayan Kar Chitta Ranjan Panda | 2015 | International Journal of Sediment Research2015,30,3: | 3 |

| 5 | Biotechnological intervention in Betelvine(Piper betle L.):A review on recent advances and future prospects显示文摘Betelvine(Piper betle L.) is cultivated for its deep green heart shaped leaf for(15-20) million Indian and 2 billion foreign consumers annually. The crop provides Rs(6 000-7 000) million of national income per year and at the same time leaves worth Rs(30-40) million is exported to other countries. The leaves are not only used directly for chewing purposes but also possesses antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, anti-apoptotic, anti-cancer and anti-microbial properties. Besides, the leaves also contain eugenol rich essential oil(1%-3%) which is the source for medicine, stimulant, antiseptic, tonic and other ayurvedic formulations. The essential oil also contains chavibetol, caryophyllene and methyl eugenol which are the potent source for preparation in ayurvedic medicine and herbal products. Cost of betelvine essential oil is 10$ per 5 mL. In spite of its great economical and medicinal importance betelvine is still neglected by the researchers for proper characterization and authentication for selection of elite landraces. Lack of awareness among people, use of same planting material for many generations, existing of many synonyms for a single landraces, no proper characterization of available landraces are some of the significant constraints for its commercialization. Our review endeavours a complete advance in the research on betelvine, existing lacunae for its proper characterization and commercial cultivation. | 6 | Curcuma angustifolia ameliorates carbon tetrachloride-induced hepatotoxicity in HepG2 cells and Swiss albino rats显示文摘Objective:To determine the antioxidant and hepatoprotective potential of methanol extract of rhizome of Curcuma angustifolia(MECA)against carbon tetrachloride(CCl4)-induced hepatic damage in vitro and in vivo.Methods:DPPH,ABTS and reducing power assays were performed to estimate the antioxidant effect of MECA.In vitro cytotoxicity of MECA against HepG2 cells was evaluated,whereas serum biochemical parameters and levels of antioxidative enzymes were measured in vivo and in vitro.Additionally,histopathological studies were estimated in order to investigate the hepatoprotective efficacy of MECA.Furthermore,GC-MS analysis of the extract was performed to identify the chemical components.Results:MECA exhibited strong antioxidant activity and attenuated CCl4-induced decrease in the viability of HepG2 cells.Additionally,MECA significantly restored the ALT,AST,ALP,TP and albumin level in comparison with the CCl4 group.After pre-treatment with MECA,effects of SOD,CAT and GSH were increased as well as lipid peroxidation amount decreased on CCl4-induced hepatotoxicity in in vitro and in vivo model.Furthermore,histopathological observation confirmed that MECA reduced liver injury induced by CCl4 in rats.GC-MS analysis confirmed the presence of bioactive constituents such as α-tocopherol(12.27%),phytol(7.61%),squalene(3.71%),β-sitosterol(2.19%),eugenol(2.59%),curcumenol(1.20%),β-elemene(1.00%)and eucalyptol(0.89%).Conclusions:MECA contains antioxidant and hepatoprotective constituents such asα-tocopherol,phytol,squalene and eugenol and exerts hepatoprotective effect both in vitro and in vivo. | Sudipta Jena Asit Ray Diptirani Rath Ambika Sahoo Subhashree Singh Noohi Nasim Durga Madhab Kar Sanghamitra Nayak | 2019 | Asian Pacific Journal of Tropical Medicine2019,12,9: | 2 |

| 8 | Fire monitoring in coal mines using wireless underground sensor network and interval type-2 fuzzy logic controller显示文摘From the view of underground coal mining safety system, it is extremely important to continuous monitoring of coal mines for the prompt detection of fires or related problems inspite of its uncertainty and imprecise characteristics. Therefore, evaluation and inferring the data perfectly to prevent fire related accidental risk in underground coal mining (UMC) system are very necessary. In the present article, we have proposed a novel type-2 fuzzy logic system (T2FLS) for the prediction of fire intensity and its risk assessment for risk reduction in an underground coal mine. Recently, for the observation of underground coal mines, wireless underground sensor network (WUSN) are being concerned frequently. To implement this technique IT2FLS, main functional components are sensor nodes which are installed in coal mines to accumulate different imprecise environmental data like, temperature, relative humidity, different gas concentrations etc. and these are sent to a base station which is connected to the ground observation system through network. In the present context, a WUSN based fire monitoring system is developed using fuzzy logic approach to enhance the consistency in decision making system to improve the risk chances of fire during coal mining. We have taken Mamdani IT2FLS as fuzzy model on coal mine monitoring data to consider real-time decision making (DM). It is predicted from the simulated results that the recommended system is highly acceptable and amenable in the case of fire hazard safety with compared to the wired and off-line monitoring system for UMC.
