| 3 | Pain and quality of life in leprosy patients in an endemic area of Northeast Brazil:a cross-sectional study显示文摘Background:Pain emerges as a challenge in the treatment of leprosy patients.In this study,we describe the prevalence and type of pain in patients with leprosy,and its effect on patients’quality of life in an endemic area of Northeast Brazil.Findings:A cross-sectional survey of 260 patients attending leprosy reference centres in Sergipe,Northeast Brazil was conducted.Individuals were assessed for the presence and type of pain,skin sensory loss,peripheral nerve enlargement,touch and pinprick sensations,mechanical allodynia and nerve palpation.Participants completed the Douleur Neuropathique 4 questionnaire,and we also used the Brief Pain Inventory scale and the World Health Organization Quality of Life-BREF instrument to arrive at our results.One hundred and ninety-five(75%)patients reported pain,mostly of the neuropathic type.Pain was moderate in 84(43.1%)and severe in 94(48.2%)participants.The presence of pain was associated with disability(p=0.001),leprosy reactions(p=0.004)and lower quality of life.Most patients with neuropathic pain were treated with steroids,despite their low efficacy for this type of pain.Conclusion:Pain is highly prevalent among leprosy patients and is associated with low quality of life.Leprosy management should include a systematic assessment of the type of pain a patient experiences in order to provide adequate treatment. | Victor S.Santos Jamilly C.V.Santana Fabrícia D.N.Castro Laudice S.Oliveira Julianne C.V.Santana Vera L.C.Feitosa Ricardo Q.Gurgel Luis E.Cuevas | 2016 | Infectious Diseases of Poverty2016,5,1: | 1 |
| 4 | Streamflow prediction in ungauged catchments by using the Grunsky method显示文摘Establish a reliable rainfall-runoff relation capable of predicting runoff in ungauged basins is a matter of interest across the world for a long time and has been taking importance during the past decades.Regionalization approaches,hydrological models and machine learning techniques have been used to estimate runoff.However,returning some simplicity to the predictions might be necessary for practical uses.In this paper,we re-introduce C.E.Grunsky approach,developed in the early 1900s to predict runoff from values of precipitation on a two-equations system.Here,we analyze the Grunsky generalized method applied for 716 Brazilian catchments,on an interannual and monthly scales.First,we established the best method to find the rainfall-runoff relation coefficient for each catchment.Then,we evaluate the performance of the method on a local scale,i.e.,catchment by catchment.Lastly,we analyze the method of regionalization,by grouping the catchments into six hydrologically similar classes.For local scale,the Kling-Gupta Efficiency(KGE)values range from 0.87 to 0.93 on the interannual scale and is greater than 0.50 on the monthly scale.For the regionalized approach,KGE varies from 0.60 to 0.84 on an interannual scale.We also found suitable KGE values on a monthly scale,with more than 22%of catchments with KGE greater than 0.50,being the best performances in the Non-seasonal and Extremely-wet groups,and the worst performance in the Dry group.Our findings indicate that Grunsky approach is suitable to predict streamflow for Brazilian catchments on interannual and monthly scales.This simple and easy-to-use equation presents a reliable alternative to more complex methods to compute runoff by only using rainfall data. | Bruno K.Marchezepe AndréAlmagro AndréS.Ballarin Paulo Tarso S.Oliveira | 2023 | International Soil and Water Conservation Research2023,11,4: | 0 |
| 5 | Atlas of precipitation extremes for South America and Africa based on depth-duration-frequency relationships in a stochastic weather generator dataset显示文摘Information about extreme rainfall is lacking in regions of South America and Africa.This study attempts to fill this scientific gap by use of a gridded parameterization for the stochastic weather generator,CLIGEN,to map depth-duration-frequency(DDF)relationships.Analysis of 500-year point-scale precipitation time series generated at each grid point allowed maps of return period precipitation to be produced for a se-lection of sixteen durations ranging from 10-min to 1-year and for nine return periods from 2 to 500 years.The generalized extreme value(GEV)probability distribution was fitted for all durations,and given GEV quantiles,an interpolation method was applied to produce maps at 0.1° resolution that better resolve small-scale spatial climate gradients.In addition to uncertainties related to GEV fitting,this study quantifies prediction intervals based on ground validation.This validation was important for identifying biases in CLIGEN,although uncertainties were not always satisfactorily defined due to sampling design and other factors.For daily/multi-day durations,100 stations with daily observations and ≥50-year records were selected for validation against the 0.1° CLIGEN map series,resulting in a median and average absolute error of 13%and 16%,respectively.For sub-daily durations,prediction errors were larger overall.An analogy using available U.S.data established the degree of bias in CUGEN for sub-daily durations,and three records in Brazil with high temporal resolutions were used to confirm that applied bias adjustments resulted in error ranges similar to the daily/multi-day cases.This atlas is freely available for study of extreme precipitation. | Andrew Fullhart David C.Goodrich Menberu B.Meles Paulo Tarso S.Oliveira Cristiano das Neves Almeida JoséC.de Araújo Shea Burns | 2023 | International Soil and Water Conservation Research2023,11,4: | 0 |
| 6 | Design method and verification of a hybrid prosthetic mechanism with energy-damper clutchable device for transfemoral amputees显示文摘Transfemoral amputees(TAs)have difficulty in mobility during walking,such as restricted movement of lower extremity and body instability,yet few transfemoral prostheses have explored human-like multiple motion characteristics by simple structures to fit the kinesiology,biomechanics,and stability of human lower extremity.In this work,the configurations of transfemoral prosthetic mechanism are synthesized in terms of human lower-extremity kinesiology.A hybrid transfemoral prosthetic(HTP)mechanism with multigait functions is proposed to recover the gait functions of TAs.The kinematic and mechanical performances of the designed parallel mechanism are analyzed to verify their feasibility in transfemoral prosthetic mechanism.Inspired by motion-energy coupling relationship of the knee,a wearable energy-damper clutched device that can provide energy in knee stance flexion to facilitate the leg off from the ground and can impede the leg’s swing velocity for the next stance phase is proposed.Its co-operation with the springs in the prismatic pairs enables the prosthetic mechanism to have the energy recycling ability under the gait rhythm of the knee joint.Results demonstrate that the designed HTP mechanism can replace the motion functions of the knee and ankle to realize its multimode gait and effectively decrease the peak power of actuators from 94.74 to 137.05 W while maintaining a good mechanical adaptive stability. | Majun SONG Sheng GUO Anderson S.OLIVEIRA Xiangyang WANG Haibo QU | 2021 | Frontiers of Mechanical Engineering2021,16,4: | 0 |
| 7 | A European digital accelerometric database:statistical analysis of engineering parameters of small to moderate magnitude events显示文摘During the NERIES Project, an accelerometric database containing European digital information was developed. Besides event and station metadata, ground motion parameters, computed in a homogeneous manner, were assembled:PGA, PGV, AI, TD, CAV, HI and PSV(f,5%)(19,961 components, 2629 events, 547 stations). Merging small and moderate magnitude events produced a unique database capable of providing important information such as:(i) Correlations between several ground motion parameters follow analogous trends as in previous worldwide datasets, with slight corrections.(ii) Although PGA attenuations with distance show great uncertainties, four recent GMPEs recommended for Europe fit quite well the central 50% data interval for the distance range 10 < R < 200 km; outside these distances, they do not fit.(iii) Soil amplification ratios indicate that weak motion(low magnitudes and larger distances) shows larger amplification than strong motion(short distances and large magnitudes) as represented in UBC97 for the USA, but not in EC8 for Europe.(iv) Average spectral shapes are smaller than in the EC8.(v) Differences in amplification factors for PGA, PGV and HI for EC8 soil classes B and C, and differences in spectral shapes for these soil classes, indicate that EC8, Type 2 S-coefficient should be frequency dependent, as in UBC97. | Carlos S.Oliveira Gerard Gassol Xavier Goula Teresa Susagna | 2014 | Earthquake Engineering and Engineering Vibration2014,13,4: | 0 |
| 8 | Gridded 20-year climate parameterization of Africa and South America for a stochastic weather generator (CLIGEN)显示文摘CLIGEN is a stochastic weather generator that creates statistically representative timeseries of daily and sub-daily point-scale weather variables from observed monthly statistics and other parameters. CLIGEN precipitation timeseries are used as climate input for various risk-assessment modelling applications as an alternative to observe long-term, high temporal resolution records. Here, we queried gridded global climate datasets (TerraClimate, ERA5, GPM-IMERG, and GLDAS) to estimate various 20-year climate statistics and obtain complete CLIGEN input parameter sets with coverage of the African and South American continents at 0.25 arc degree resolution. The estimation of CLIGEN precipitation parameters was informed by a ground-based dataset of >10,000 locations worldwide. The ground observations provided target values to fit regression models that downscale CLIGEN precipitation input parameters. Aside from precipitation parameters, CLIGEN’s parameters for temperature, solar radiation, etc. were in most cases directly calculated according to the original global datasets. Cross-validation for estimated precipitation parameters quantified errors that resulted from applying the estimation approach in a predictive fashion. Based on all training data, the RMSE was 2.23 mm for the estimated monthly average single-event accumulation and 4.70 mm/hr for monthly maximum 30-min intensity. | 9 | Fern extracts potentiate fluconazole activity and inhibit morphological changes in Candida species显示文摘Objective: To investigate the antifungal activity of the fern species Lygodium venustum(L. venustum) and Pityrogramma calomelanos(P. calomelanos) against Candida albicans and Candida tropicalis strains.Methods: The microdilution method was used to evaluate the antifungal activity, as well as the modulating effects of ethanolic extracts of these plants in combination with fluconazole. The minimum inhibitory concentration(MIC), minimum fungicide concentration and morphological changes were also determined.Results: The extract obtained from L. venustum presented a MIC > 8 192 mg/m L, while the extract obtained from and P. calomelanos presented a MIC = 8 192 mg/m L, indicating that they present weak antifungal activity. However, combination of the extracts with Fluconazole potentiated the antifungal activity of this drug. At different experimental conditions, such as concentration of the extract and type of strain, the extracts inhibited hyphae and pseudohyphae formation, indicating that these fern species can affect the morphology of the fungi.Conclusions: The extracts obtained from the fern species L. venustum and P. calomelanos dose not present significant antifungal activity. However, P. calomelanos potentiates the activity of fluconazole and both extracts inhibits the morphological changes in Candida species, indicating that they have potential pharmacological activity as modulators of fungal biology. | 10 | Brazilian payment for environmental services programs emphasize water-related services显示文摘Based on'user pays'and'provider gets'principles,the Payment for Environmental Services(PES)consists of providing economic incentives or compensation for land users who adopt activities that promote ecosystem services.These PES initiatives have grown rapidly in Brazil over the last few decades,however,studies that address the panorama of these programs in the country are still scarce,regional,or outdated.Here,we investigate the PES overview in Brazil through interviews and an extensive literature review.We found in total 80 PES programs implemented in Brazil,of which 14 were closed.The pro-grams are poorly distributed across the country,mostly concentrated in the Atlantic Forest(56.25%)and Savanna(36.25%)biomes,in Southeastern Brazil.The majority of programs primarily prioritize improving water quality and quantity.Therefore,reforestation,protection of native vegetation,and soil and water conservation are their main proposed practices.The positive impacts of Brazil's PES experi-ences are evident;while the lack of transparency and monitoring,and poor spatial and financial dis-tribution are still major limitations.We conclude that if correctly implemented,PES schemes offer a path to reconcile environmental conservation with agricultural production in Brazil. | Ingrid Mamedes Angélica Guerra Dulce B.B.Rodrigues Letícia Couto Garcia Raquel de Faria Godoi Paulo Tarso S.Oliveira | 2023 | International Soil and Water Conservation Research2023,11,2: | 0 |
