| 2 | Bioanalytical methods for metabolomic profiling:Detection of head and neck cancer,including oral cancer显示文摘Metabolomics is an emerging field dealing with the measurement and interpretation of small molecular byproducts of biochemical processes,or metabolites,which can be used to generate profiles from biological samples.Promising for use in pathophysiology,metabolomic profiles give the immediate biological state of a sample.These profiles are altered in diseases and are detectable in biological samples,such as tissue,blood,urine,saliva,and others.Most remarkably,metabolic profiles usually are altered before symptoms appear in a patient.For this reason,metabolomics has potential as a reliable method for an early diagnosis of diseases through disease biomarker identification.This application is most prevalent in cancer,such as head and neck cancer(HNC).Metabolomic studies offer avenues to improve on current medical techniques through the application of mass spectrometry(MS),nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy(NMR),and statistical analysis to determine better biomarkers than those currently known.In this review,we discuss the use of MS and NMR tools for detecting biomarkers in tissue and fluid samples,and the appropriateness of metabolomics in analyzing cancer.Advantages,disadvantages,and recent studies on metabolomic profiling techniques in HNC analysis are also discussed herein. | Nirbhay S.Jain Ulrich H.N.Drr Ayyalusamy Ramamoorthy | 2015 | Chinese Chemical Letters2015,26,4: | 3 |

| 6 | Infection of Early and Young Callus Tissues of Indica Rice BPT5204 Enhances Regeneration and Transformation Efficiency显示文摘A rapid and reproducible method to develop transgenic plants with enhanced transformation efficiency using Agrobacterium has been developed for the elite indica rice variety BPT 5204. Different rice calli aged from 3 to 30 d were co-cultivated with pre-incubated Agrobacterium suspension culture(LBA4404: pSB1, pCAMBIA1301) and incubated in dark for 3 d. Based on the transient GUS gene expression analysis, 6-day-old young calli showed high transformation frequency followed by 21-day-old ones. Thus, both 6- and 21-day-old calli were used for assessing the stable transformation efficiency. It was observed that the 6-day-old young transformed calli showed about 2-fold higher regeneration frequency when compared with 21-day-old calli. The transformation efficiency was enhanced for young calli to 5.9% compared with 0.8% of the 21-day-old calli. Molecular and genetic analysis of transgenic plants(T0) revealed the presence of 1–2 copies of T-DNA integration in transformants and it follows Mendalian ratio in T1 transgenic plants. | 7 | Biomechanics of human optic chiasmal compression: ex vivo experiment and finite element modelling显示文摘The mechanism of bitemporal hemianopia arising as a result of chiasmal compression is unknown.In this study,we combined an ex vivo experiment and finite element modelling(FEM)to investigate its potential mechanism.A cadaveric human optic chiasm was scanned using micro-CT before and after deformation by inflation of Foley catheter,to simulate tumour growth from beneath.The geometry of the same chiasm was reconstructed and simulated using finite element analysis.Chiasmal deformations were extracted from the simulation and compared with those observed during micro-CT scanning.In addition,nerve fibre models examining variation in local fibre distribution patterns of the chiasm were incorporated to investigate the strain(deformation)distributions of the chiasm at an axonal level.The FEM model matched the micro-CT scans well both qualitatively and quantitatively.Compression of the chiasm induced high strains in the paracentral portions of the chiasm where the crossing optic nerve fibres are located.At an axonal level,the magnitude of strains affecting crossed fibres were greater than those affecting uncrossed fibres.The high strains in the paracentral portions of the chiasm,combined with the differences in strain between crossed and uncrossed nerve fibres,are consistent with a biomechanical explanation for the pattern of visual field loss seen in chiasmal compression. | Xiaofei Wang Andrew J.Neely Neeranjali S.Jain Swaranjali V.Jain Sanjiv Jain Murat Tahtali Gawn G.McIlwaine Christian J.Lueck | 2022 | Medicine in Novel Technology and Devices2022,,1: | 0 |
