Role of soil rhizobacteria in phytoremediation of heavy metal contaminated soils显示文摘Heavy metal pollution of soil is a significant environmental problem and has its negative impact on human health and agriculture. Rhizosphere, as an important interface of soil and plant, plays a significant role in phytoremediation of contaminated soil by heavy metals, in which, microbial populations are known to affect heavy metal mobility and availability to the plant through release of chelating agents, acidification, phosphate solubilization and redox changes, and therefore, have potential to enhance phytoremediation processes. Phytoremediation strategies with appropriate heavy metal-adapted rhizobacteria have re-ceived more and more attention. This article paper reviews some recent advances in effect and significance of rhizobacteria in phytoremediation of heavy metal contaminated soils. There is also a need to improve our understanding of the mechanisms in-volved in the transfer and mobilization of heavy metals by rhizobacteria and to conduct research on the selection of microbial isolates from rhizosphere of plants growing on heavy metal contaminated soils for specific restoration programmes.JING Yan-de1,2, HE Zhen-li1,3, YANG Xiao-e1 (1Ministry of Education Key Lab of Environment, Remediation and Ecosystem Health, School of Natural Resource and Environment Science, Zhejiang University, Hangzhou 310029, China) (2Department of Resources and Planning, Qufu Normal University, Jining 273165, China) (3University of Florida Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences, Indian River Research and Education Center, Fort Pierce, Florida 34945, USA) 2007Journal of Zhejiang University-Science B(Biomedicine & Biotechnology)2007,8,3:18
EXAFS study on arsenic species and transformation in arsenic hyperaccumulator显示文摘Synchrotron radiation extended X-ray absorption fine structure (SR EXAFS) was employed to study the transformation of coordination environment and the redox speciation of arsenic in a newly discovered arsenic hyperaccumulator, Cretan brake (Pteris cretica L. var ner-vosa Thunb). It showed that the arsenic in the plant mainly coordinated with oxygen, except that some arsenic coordinated with S as As-GSH in root. The complexation of arsenic with GSH might not be the predominant detoxification mechanism in Cretan brake. Although some arsenic in root presented as As(V) in Na2HAsO4 treatments, most of arsenic in plant presented as As(III)-O in both treatments, indicating that As(V) tended to be reduced to As(III) after it was taken up into the root, and arsenic was kept as As(III) when it was transported to the above-ground tissues. The reduction of As(V) primarily proceeded in the root.HUANG Zechun1, CHEN Tongbin1, LEI Mei1, HU Tiandou2 & HUANG Qifei1 1. 5Distributions of arsenic and essential elements in pinna of arsenic hyperaccumulator Pteris vittata L.显示文摘The distributions of arsenic and 6 essential elements in the pinna of As hyperaccumulator, Pteris vittata L., were studied using synchrotron radiation X-ray fluorescence (SRXRF). Significant correlation between the distribution and mobility of the elements revealed that SRXRF study on the elemental distribution was feasible to inspect the transportations of elements in plants. The distribution of As in the pinna showed that As had great abilities to be transported in xylem vessels and from xylem to mesophyll. The distribution of K, one of the most mobile elements in plants, was similar to that of As, whereas the distributions of Fe and Ca with less mobility in plants were almost opposite to that of As in the pinna.CHEN Tongbin, HUANG Zechun, HUANG Yuying & LEI Mei Laboratory of Environmental Remediation, Institute of Geographic Sciences and Natural Resources Research, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Beijing 100101, China Laboratory of Synchrotron Radiation, Institute of High Energy Physics, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Beijing 100039, China 2005Science China(Life Sciences)2005,48,1:7
Equations and their physical interpretation in numerical modeling of heavy metals in fluvial rivers显示文摘Based on the previous work on the transport-transformation of heavy metal pollutants in fluvial rivers, this paper presented the formulation of a two-dimensional model to describe heavy metal transport-transformation in fluvial rivers by considering basic principles of environmental chemistry, hydraulics, mechanics of sediment transport and recent developments along with three very simplified test cases. The model consists of water flow governing equations, sediment transport governing equations, transport-transformation equation of heavy metal pollutants, and convection-diffusion equations of adsorption-desorption kinetics of particulate heavy metal concentrations on suspended load, bed load and bed sediment. The heavy metal transport-transformation equation is basically a mass balance equation, which demonstrates how sediment transport affects transport-transformation of heavy metals in fluvial rivers. The convection-diffusion equations of adsorption-desorption kinetics of heavy metals, being an extension of batch reactor experimental results and a major advancement of the previous work, take both physical transport, i.e. convection and diffusion and chemical reactions, i.e. adsorption-desorption into account. Effects of sediment transport on heavy metal transport-transformation were clarified through three examples. Specifically, the transport-transformation of heavy metals in a steady, uniform and equilibrium sediment-laden flow was calculated by applying this model, and results were shown to be rational. Both theoretical analysis and numerical simulation indicated that the transport-transformation of heavy metals in sediment-laden flows with clay-enriched riverbed possesses not only the generality of common tracer pollutants, but also characteristics of transport-transformation induced by sediment motion. Future work will be conducted to present validation/application of the model with available data.HUANG SuiLiang Numerical Simulation Group for Water Environment, Tianjin Key Laboratory of Environmental Remediation and Pollution Control, Key Laboratory of Pollution Processes and Environmental Criteria of the Ministry of Education College of Environmental Science and Engineering, Nankai University, Tianjin 300071, China 2010Science China(Technological Sciences)2010,53,2:5
Understanding the endocrine disruption of chiral pesticides:The enantioselectivity in estrogenic activity of synthetic pyrethroids显示文摘Synthetic pyrethroids(SPs) ,a family of chiral insecticides consisting of multiple stereoismers, have been regarded as estrogenic endocrine-disrupting chemicals(EDCs) .In this study,we applied the yeast two-hybrid and molecular docking(MD) assay to assess the enantioselective estrogenic activities of three commonly used SPs,bifenthrin(cis-BF) ,permethrin(PM) and fenvalerate(Fen) .The β-galactosidase analyses indicated that all of the testing pyrethroids displayed significant(p<0.05) enantioselectivity. The results showed that the estrogenic potential of cis-BF was mainly attributed to 1S-cis-BF.Neither PM nor Fen showed estrogenic effects. However, two stereoisomers of PM possessed estrogenic potential activities.αR-2R-Fen and αS-2S-Fen also induced the β-galactosidase activity. The inability to initiate the reporter gene expression by the racemic chemicals may be due to the low ratios of these isomers or the antagonism among them. The strong hydrophobic interaction and the hydrogen bond between positive estrogenic isomers and ERα support our biological testing results. This research demonstrated that the enantioselective estrogenic activity of chiral SPs was due to selective binding between their isomers and the ERαreceptor. The data suggests that enantioselectivity of these chiral pesticides is significant to their estrogenic activities.WANG Cui 1,ZHANG Quan 1,ZHANG XiaoFeng 1,LIU Jing 2 & LIU WeiPing 2 1College of Biological and Environmental Engineering,Zhejiang University of Technology,Hangzhou 310032,China 2Key Laboratory of Environmental Remediation and Ecosystem Health,Ministry of Education College of Environmental and Resource Sciences,Zhejiang University,Hangzhou 310029,China 2010Science China Chemistry2010,53,5:4
Changes in hair arsenic concentration in a population exposed to heavy pollution:Follow-up investigation in Chenzhou City,Hunan Province,Southern China显示文摘Follow-up investigation on hair arsenic concentration was conducted in an arsenic heavily polluted area of southern China in 2002 and 2006.The results showed that the geometric mean of hair arsenic concentration decreased from 2.95 mg/kg in 2002 to 1.78 mg/kg in 2006,when the percentage of the population with levels over 1 mg/kg only decreased from 93.4% in 2002 to 80.5% in 2006.Over this four-year period, the population with high arsenic concentrations decreased significantly while there was no obvious change in hair arsenic concentration for people who had relatively low concentrations. In terms of age distribution, young and old people had higher hair arsenic concentrations than the middle-aged.All of these results showed that it is difficult to reverse the negative impact of arsenic pollution on human health.Arsenic pollution has a long-term continuous influence on the health of local residents.Bin Wu,Tongbin Chen Center for Environmental Remediation,Institute of Geographic Sciences and Natural Resources Research,Chinese Academy of Sciences,Beijing 100101,China. 2010Journal of Environmental Sciences2010,22,2:4
Bioaccumulation and single and joint toxicities of penta-BDE and cadmium to earthworms (Eisenia fetida) exposed to spiked soils显示文摘Bioaccumulation of penta-BDE(DE-71) in earthworms(Eisenia fetida) and the induced toxicities on the growth and reproduction of earthworms were investigated. All the major congeners in DE-71 could be bioaccumulated in earthworms and the concentration found in earthworms correlated to the spiked concentration in soil.DE-71 might inhibit the growth and reproduction of cocoons and juveniles of earthworms. The toxicities were dose dependent and increased with exposure time.Exposing earthworms to combination of DE-71 and Cd resulted in enhanced mortality and reduction of cocoons or juveniles in a synergistic mode. The presence of DE-71 may affect the relocation of Cd in earthworms. When the earthworms were exposed to Cd alone,Cd up-taken by earthworms was mainly partitioned in the cytosolic fraction. While DE-71 was present,Cd in the cytosolic fraction decreased significantly. It is perhaps that DE-71 inhibits the synthesis of matallothioneins, and then reduces the detoxification ability of earthworms. This is the first report about the toxicity of PBDEs to earthworms. The result would be useful for ecological risk assessment of PBDEs in terrestrial ecosystem.ZHU ShuZhen,LIU Man,TIAN ShengYan & ZHU LingYan College of Environmental Science and Engineering,Nankai University Key Laboratory of Pollution Processes and Environmental Criteria(Nankai University) ,Ministry of Education Tianjin Key Laboratory of Urban Ecology Environmental Remediation and Pollution Control,Nankai University,Tianjin 300071,China 2010Science China Chemistry2010,53,5:2
