Recently highlighted nutraceuticals for preventive management of osteoarthritis显示文摘Osteoarthritis(OA) is a chronic degenerative disease of articular cartilage with limited treatment options. This reality encourages clinicians to suggest preventive measures to delay and contain the outbreak of the pathological conditions. Articular cartilage and synovium suffering from OA are characterised by an inflammatory state and by significant oxidative stress, responsible for pain, swelling and loss of mobility in the advanced stages. This review will focus on the ability of olive oil to exert positive effects on the entire joint to reduce pro-inflammatory cytokine release and increase lubricin synthesis, olive leaf extract, since it maintains lubrication by stimulating high molecular weight hyaluronan synthesis in synovial cells, curcumin, which delays the start of pathological cartilage breakdown, sanguinarine, which downregulates catabolic proteases, vitamin D for its capacity to influence the oxidative and proinflammatory environment, and carnosic acid as an inducer of heme oxygenase-1,which helps preserve cartilage degeneration. These molecules, considered as natural dietary supplements, appear like a cuttingedge answer to this tough health problem, playing a major role in controlling homeostatic balance loss and slowing down the pathology progression. Natural or food-derived molecules that are able to exert potential therapeutic effects are known as 'nutraceutical',resulting from the combination of the words 'nutrition' and 'pharmaceutical'. These compounds have gained popularity due to their easy availability, which represents a huge advantage for food and pharmaceutical industries. In addition, the chronic nature of OA implies the use of pharmacological compounds with proven longterm safety, especially because current treatments like nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs and analgesicsimprove pain relief but have no effect on degenerative progression and can also cause serious side effects.Silvia Ravalli Marta Anna Szychlinska Rosalia Maria Leonardi Giuseppe Musumeci 2018World Journal of Orthopedics2018,9,11:5
Study of locust bean gum reinforced cyst-chitosan and oxidized dextran based semi-IPN cryogel dressing for hemostatic application显示文摘Severe blood loss due to traumatic injuries remains one of the leading causes of death in emergency settings.Chitosan continues to be the candidate material for hemostatic applications due to its inherent hemostatic properties. However, available chitosan-based dressings have been reported to have an acidic odor at the wound site due to the incorporation of acid based solvents for their fabrication and deformation under compression owing to low mechanical strength limiting its usability. In the present study semi-IPN cryogel was fabricated via Schiff's base cross-linking between the polyaldehyde groups of oxidized dextran and thiolated chitosan in presence of locust bean gum(LBG)known for its hydrophilicity.Polymerization at12C yielded macroporous semi-IPN cryogels with an average pore size of 124.57±20.31 mm and 85.46%porosity.The hydrophobicity index of LBG reinforced semi-IPN cryogel was reduced 2.42 times whereas the swelling ratio was increased by 156.08%compare to control cryogel. The increased hydrophilicity and swelling ratio inflated the compressive modulus from 28.1 kPa to 33.85 for LBG reinforced semi-IPN cryogel. The structural stability and constant degradation medium pH were also recorded over a period of 12 weeks. The cryogels demonstrated lower adsorption affinity towards BSA.The cytotoxicity assays(direct, indirect)with 3T3-L1 fibroblast cells confirmed the cytocompatibility of the cryogels. The hemolysis assay showed<5%hemolysis confirming blood compatibility of the fabricated cryogel, while whole blood clotting and platelet adhesion assays confirmed the hemostatic potential of semi-IPN cryogel.Lalit Kumar Meena Pavani Raval Dhaval Kedaria Rajesh Vasita 2018Bioactive Materials2018,3,3:4
A robust approach to identify roof bolts in 3D point cloud data captured from a mobile laser scanner显示文摘Roof bolts such as rock bolts and cable bolts provide structural support in underground mines.Frequent assessment of these support structures is critical to maintain roof stability and minimise safety risks in underground environments. This study proposes a robust workflow to classify roof bolts in 3 D point cloud data and to generate maps of roof bolt density and spacing. The workflow was evaluated for identifying roof bolts in an underground coal mine with suboptimal lighting and global navigation satellite system(GNSS)signals not available. The approach is based on supervised classification using the multi-scale Canupo classifier coupled with a random sample consensus(RANSAC)shape detection algorithm to provide robust roof bolt identification. The issue of sparseness in point cloud data has been addressed through upsampling by using a moving least squares method. The accuracy of roof bolt identification was measured by correct identification of roof bolts(true positives),unidentified roof bolts(false negatives),and falsely identified roof bolts(false positives)using correctness, completeness, and quality metrics. The proposed workflow achieved correct identification of 89.27%of the roof bolts present in the test area. However, considering the false positives and false negatives, the overall quality metric was reduced to 78.54%.Sarvesh Kumar Singh Simit Raval Bikram Banerjee 2021International Journal of Mining Science and Technology2021,31,2:3

A review of laser scanning for geological and geotechnical applications in underground mining显示文摘Laser scanning can provide timely assessments of mine sites despite adverse challenges in the operational environment.Although there are several published articles on laser scanning, there is a need to review them in the context of underground mining applications. To this end,a holistic review of laser scanning is presented including progress in 3D scanning systems, data capture/processing techniques and primary applications in underground mines.Laser scanning technology has advanced significantly in terms of mobility and mapping, but there are constraints in coherent and consistent data collection at certain mines due to feature deficiency, dynamics, and environmental influences such as dust and water.Studies suggest that laser scanning has matured over the years for change detection, clearance measurements and structure mapping applications. However, there is scope for improvements in lithology identification, surface parameter measurements, logistic tracking and autonomous navigation.Laser scanning has the potential to provide real-time solutions but the lack of infrastructure in underground mines for data transfer, geodetic networking and processing capacity remain limiting factors.Nevertheless, laser scanners are becoming an integral part of mine automation thanks to their affordability, accuracy and mobility, which should support their widespread usage in years to come.Sarvesh Kumar Singh Bikram Pratap Banerjee Simit Raval 2023International Journal of Mining Science and Technology2023,33,2:2
Mapping Sensitive Vegetation Communities in Mining Eco-space using UAV-LiDAR显示文摘Near earth sensing from uncrewed aerial vehicles or UAVs has emerged as a potential approach for fne-scale environmental monitoring. These systems provide a cost-efective and repeatable means to acquire remotely sensed images in unprecedented spatial detail and a high signal-to-noise ratio. It is increasingly possible to obtain both physiochemical and structural insights into the environment using state-of-art light detection and ranging(LiDAR)sensors integrated onto UAVs.Monitoring sensitive environments, such as swamp vegetation in longwall mining areas,is essential yet challenging due to their inherent complexities.Current practices for monitoring these remote and challenging environments are primarily ground-based.This is partly due to an absent framework and challenges of using UAV-based sensor systems in monitoring such sensitive environments. This research addresses the related challenges in developing a LiDAR system, including a workfow for mapping and potentially monitoring highly heterogeneous and complex environments. This involves amalgamating several design components, including hardware integration, calibration of sensors, mission planning, and developing a processing chain to generate usable datasets. It also includes the creation of new methodologies and processing routines to establish a pipeline for efcient data retrieval and generation of usable products. The designed systems and methods were applied to a peat swamp environment to obtain an accurate geo-spatialised LiDAR point cloud.Performance of the LiDAR data was tested against ground-based measurements on various aspects, including visual assessment for generation LiDAR metrices maps, canopy height model, and fne-scale mapping.Bikram Pratap Banerjee Simit Raval 2022International Journal of Coal Science & Technology2022,9,3:2
Broadband 200-nm second-harmonic generation in silicon in the telecom band显示文摘Silicon is well known for its strong third-order optical nonlinearity, exhibiting efficient supercontinuum and four-wave mixing processes.A strong second-order effect that is naturally inhibited in silicon can also be observed, for example,by electrically breaking the inversion symmetry and quasi-phase matching the pump and the signal. To generate an efficient broadband second-harmonic signal, however, the most promising technique requires matching the group velocities of the pump and the signal. In this work,we utilize dispersion engineering of a silicon waveguide to achieve group velocity matching between the pump and the signal, along with an additional degree of freedom to broaden the second harmonic through the strong third-order nonlinearity. We demonstrate that the strong self-phase modulation and cross-phase modulation in silicon help broaden the second harmonic by 200 nm in the O-band.Furthermore,we show a waveguide design that can be used to generate a second-harmonic signal in the entire nearinfrared region. Our work paves the way for various applications, such as efficient and broadband complementarymetal oxide semiconductor based on-chip frequency synthesizers, entangled photon pair generators, and optical parametric oscillators.Neetesh Singh Manan Raval Alfonso Ruocco Michael R.Watts 2020Light(Science & Applications)2020,9,1:2
A comprehensive review of the application of nano-silica in oil well cementing显示文摘Oil and Gas Industry is a Multi-Billion Dollar Industry.Drilling a well is costly, right from exploration to drilling and production to Enhanced Oil Recovery(EOR).Nanotechnology has the potential to introduce revolutionary changes in several areas of the oil and gas industry, such as exploration, drilling, cementation, production,EOR,etc.Use of Nanotechnology in the cement slurry can also achieve solutions to some of the problems pertaining to oil well cementation.Nano-silica is a better alternative compared to conventional additives like calcium chloride and silica, because as compared to calcium chloride and silica, the amount of nano-silica to be added is very small.Nano-silica acts as a multi-functional additive.Upon addition of nano-silica to cement slurry, there is a decrease in the thickening time,an increase in the compressive strength, decrease in porosity and permeability within the cement and also a decrease in the fluid loss.Incorporation of nano-silica ensures proper cementation and greater integrity of the well.Nano-silica helps in decreasing the wait on cement(WOC)time and therefore reduces the overall capital cost.Nano-silica is highly recommended for deep offshore wells where high temperature and high pressure are often encountered. This paper discusses the behavior of Nano-silica at high temperatures and also reviews effects of Nano-silica on various properties of cement.Akshar Thakkar Aakash Raval Shishir Chandra Manan Shah Anirbid Sircar 2020Petroleum2020,6,2:2
Effect of nonionic surfactants in release media on accelerated in-vitro release profile of sirolimus eluting stents with biodegradable polymeric coating显示文摘It is a well-known fact that sirolimus(SRL) undergoes degradation process via hydrolysis in aqueous media, leading to incorrect assessment of drug amount and thus release characteristics of formulations. The main objective of the present study was to evaluate the effect of nonionic surfactants in media on invitro release profiles for sirolimus eluting stents(SES) coated with biodegradable polymeric matrix.Phosphate buffer and acetate buffer incorporating nonionic surfactants with varying concentrations were examined for adequate solubility and stability(by RP-HPLC). Good sink condition was achieved in phosphate buffer(at pH 4.0) with 1.0% Tween 20, 1.0% Brij 35% and 0.5% Brij 58. Hydrodynamic size(by DLS) and the micelle-water partition coefficient(P) with standard free energy of solubilization(ΔGs°) of drug were evaluated to get some understanding about the solubilization phenomena. About 80% of drug release during the period of 48 h was achieved in optimized drug release media which was 1.0% Tween20 in phosphate buffer pH 4.0. The obtained accelerated SRL release profile in optimized medium correlated well with the real time in-vitro release in phosphate buffer(pH 7.4). Surface morphology changes(by SEM), changes in gravimetric weights and molecular weight change(by GPC) were examined before and after drug release to understand the drug release mechanism which explains that the polymer did not undergo degradation during the drug release.Ami Raval Pratap Bahadur Ankur Raval 2018Journal of Pharmaceutical Analysis2018,8,1:2
Exercise as medicine to be prescribed in osteoarthritis显示文摘Inactivity contributes to chronic diseases, including diabetes, hypertension, cardiovascular disorders, and obesity. Sedentary habits can shorten life expectancy. Exercise has been widely proposed as a valuable approach to prevention. Regular physical activity, as part of one’s daily routine, may help to manage pathological conditions. This editorial especially addresses osteoarthritis(OA), a degenerative disease of the articular cartilage, which is one of the most common causes of disability worldwide. Standard treatments for this illness include surgical procedures and pharmacological management;behavioural approaches are also strongly recommended. Physical exercise represents a practical strategy to preserve function, decrease pain and fatigue, and increase muscle strength and flexibility. We suggest that physical activity be considered as an established form of treatment, which means including exercise in standard therapeutic guidelines. A growing number of patients suffer from preventable chronic conditions that impose a heavy social and economic burden on the healthcare system. Preventive exercise training should be prescribed in the same way as pharmaceuticals.Silvia Ravalli Paola Castrogiovanni Giuseppe Musumeci 2019World Journal of Orthopedics2019,10,7:2
