1Heavy metal content in relation to particle size and organic content of surficial sediments in Miami River and transport potential显示文摘Transport of contaminants in Miami River(Florida,USA) sediments with river currents is a concern due to their potential impact in areas that are away from the potential sources.Accumulation profiles of five metals(As,Cd,Hg,Zn,Pb) in the surficial sediments of the Miami River were evaluated in relation to grain size(from less than 0.075 mm to 6.3 mm) and organic content.Surficial sediment samples were collected along the river basin as well as in bay waters.Fine sediments(< 0.106 mm) contained more than 10 times the levels of Cd and Hg and more than 6 times the levels of arsenic in comparison to the sediments that are larger than 0.850 mm.Zn and Pb levels were more than 10 times in the fine sediments(< 0.106 mm) in comparison to those that were larger than 4.750 mm.Cd,Hg,and Zn levels had significant correlation with the total organic carbon content of the sediments.This indicates that Cd,Hg,and Zn in fine sediments have the potential to be metabolized in addition to potential to be mobilized with river currents.Analysis of the Gibbs settling velocities of particles showed that particles smaller than0.5 mm can be transported with the river currents.The levels of heavy metal in fine sediments(< 0.425 mm) along the river bed showed that fine particles had tendency to be mobilized and accumulate at locations where the rivers currents are low and carried out to the bay.Berrin Tansel Syed Rafiuddin 2016International Journal of Sediment Research2016,31,4:5
2Effect of front guide nozzle shape on the flow characteristics in an augmentation channel of a direct drive turbine for wave power generation显示文摘There is an increasing interest in cross flow turbines(also known as Banki turbines) for small and low head applications because of their simple structure as well as low capital and maintenance costs.The present work aims at implementing the direct drive turbine(DDT) of cross flow type for wave power generation.A numerical wave tank was used to simulate the waves and after obtaining the desired wave properties;the augmentation channel plus the front guide nozzle and rear chamber were integrated to the numerical wave tank.The waves in the numerical wave tank were generated by a piston type wave maker which was located at the wave tank inlet.The inlet which was modeled as a plate wall moved sinusoidally with the general function x = asinω t.The augmentation channel consisted of a front nozzle,rear nozzle and an internal fluid region which represented the turbine housing.The front and rear nozzles were geometrically the same.Three different front guide nozzle configurations were studied:a standard guide nozzle which was originally attached to the augmentation channel and two other front guide nozzles of different geometries.The purpose of this study is to observe how the front guide nozzle shape influences the flow downstream,mainly in the augmenta-tion channel,water power and the first stage energy conversion.The analysis was performed using a commercial CFD code ANSYS-CFX.The results of the flow in the augmentation channel for the three front guide nozzles are presented in this paper.Deepak PRASAD Mohammed Asid ZULLAH Mohammed Rafiuddin AHMED Young-Ho LEE 2010Science China(Technological Sciences)2010,53,1:4
3Performance analysis of a wave energy converter using numerical simulation technique显示文摘A general purpose viscous flow solver Ansys CFX was used to study a Savonius type wave energy converter in a 3D numerical viscous wave tank.This paper presents the results of a computational fluid dynamics(CFD) analysis of the effect of blade configuration on the performance of two Savonius rotors for wave energy extraction.A piston-type wave generator was incorporated in the computational domain to generate the desired incident waves.A complete OWC system with a 3-bladed Savonius rotor was modeled in a three dimensional numerical wave tank and the hydrodynamic conversion efficiency was estimated.The flow over the rotors was assumed to be two-dimensional(2D),viscous,turbulent and unsteady.The CFX code was used with a solver of the coupled conservation equations of mass,momentum and energy,with an implicit time scheme and with the adoption of the hexahedral mesh and the moving mesh techniques in areas of moving surfaces.Turbulence was modeled with the k-e model.The results indicated that the developed models are suitable to analyze the water flows both in the chamber and in the turbine.For the turbine,the numerical results of pressure and torque were compared for the two cases.Mohammed Asid ZULLAH Deepak PRASAD Mohammed Rafiuddin AHMED Young-Ho LEE 2010Science China(Technological Sciences)2010,53,1:3

17Transient expression of SbDhr2 and MeHNL in Gossypium hirsutum for herbivore deterrence assay with Spodoptera litura显示文摘Background:Spodoptera litura(Lepidoptera:Noctuidae),commonly known as tobacco cutworm or cotton leafworm,is a polyphagous pest which causes considerable damage to cotton(Gossypium hirsutum)and other crops.Herbivore-induced defence response is activated in plants against chewing pests,in which plant secondary metabolites play an important role.Dhurrinase2(SbDhr2),a cyanogenicβ-glucosidase from Sorghum bicolor,is the key enzyme responsible for the hydrolysis of dhurrin(cyanogenicβ-glucosidic substrate)to phydroxymandelonitrile.Hydroxynitrile lyase(Me HNL)from Mannihot esculanta catalyses the dissociation of cyanohydrins to hydrogen cyanide and corresponding carbonyl compound,both enzymes play a pivotal role in plant defence mechanism.Results:SbDhr2 and Me HNL genes were expressed individually and co-expressed transiently in cotton leaves.We examined the feeding response of S.litura to leaves in the choice assay.The S.litura population used in this study showed better feeding deterrence to leaves co-expressing both genes compared with the expression of an individual gene.Conclusion:Our results suggest that co-expression of SbDhr2 and Me HNL genes in cotton leaves demonstrate feeding deterrence to S.litura.Engineering cyanogenic pathway in aerial parts of cotton would be an additional defence strategy against generalist pests and can be enhanced against specialist pests.MAHAJAN Chavi NASER Rafiuddin GUPTA Shantikumar 2020Journal of Cotton Research2020,3,1:1
