| 1 | New Insights into Plant Isoprenoid Metabolism显示文摘Isoprenoids are a hugely diverse family of compounds derived from the C5 precursors isopentenyl diphosphate (IPP) and dimethylallyl diphosphate (DMAPP).Although all free-living organisms synthesize isoprenoids,they are particularly abundant and diverse in plants,with tens of thousands structures known to date.The highest variety of plant isoprenoids are specialized (secondary) metabolites that participate in the interaction of plants with their environment.These include pigments,volatiles,and defense compounds,some of which have applications in industry and agriculture.For example,isoprenoid drugs are used against cancer (taxol) or malaria (artemisin).But plants also synthesize isoprenoids with essential (primary) functions in respiration (ubiquinone),photosynthesis (carotenoids,chlorophylls,tocopherols,phylIoquinones,plastoquinone),membrane architecture (sterols),and growth regulation (brassinosteroids,cytokinins,gibberellins,abscisic acid,strigolactones).Despite their economic importance and biological relevance,our knowledge of the core pathways for the production of the universal isoprenoid precursors IPP and DMAPP in plant cells remained incomplete until the mid-1990s.Impressive progress in the last decade has resulted in the complete elucidation of several isoprenoid pathways,the identification of regulatory mechanisms,the discovery of new functions and properties of specific isoprenoids,and the successful manipulation of isoprenoid biosynthesis in a number of metabolic engineering approaches.In this update article,we will discuss some of the most recent advances in the plant isoprenoid field,focusing on the pathways supplying the C5 precursors in plant cells and the novel insights into regulatory matters. | Pablo Pulido Catalina Perello Manuel Rodriguez-Concepcion | 2012 | Molecular Plant2012,5,5: | 22 |
| 2 | Using old liver grafts for liver transplantation: Where are the limits?显示文摘The scarcity of ideal liver grafts for orthotopic liver transplantation(OLT) has led transplant teams to investigate other sources of grafts in order to augment the donor liver pool. One way to get more liver grafts is to use marginal donors, a not well-defined group which includes mainly donors > 60 years, donors with hypernatremia or macrosteatosis > 30%, donors with hepatitis C virus or hepatitis B virus positive serologies, cold ischemia time > 12 h, non-heart-beating donors, and grafts from split-livers or living-related donations. Perhaps the most practical and frequent measure to increase the liver pool, and thus to reduce waiting list mortality, is to use older livers. In the past years the results of OLT with old livers have improved, mainly due to better selection and maintenance of donors, improvements in surgical techniques in donors and recipients, and intra- and post-OLT management. At the present time, sexagenarian livers are generally accepted, but there still exists some controversy regarding the use of septuagenarian and octogenarian liver grafts. The aim of this paper is to briefly review the aging process of the liver and reported experiences using old livers for OLT. | 7 | Geochemical characterization of the salinity of irrigated soils in arid regions(Biskra, SE Algeria)显示文摘The agriculture in Biskra,southeastern Algeria,is based on traditional practices and characterized by small irrigated fields.In the last decades,the increasing demand in water as well as the scarcity of rainfall has forced many farmers to use groundwater of low quality to maintain the profitability of their crops.Unfortunately,this practice seems to be the main harmful factor for soil quality in the region since it is responsible for the salinization of the irrigated areas.Aiming to assess the impact of this phenomenon,the soils of the irrigated perimeter of El Ghrous-a representative rural community located in the west of Biskra-have been analyzed.A set of 82 soil samples was collected from top and subsoil(0-15 and15-35 cm respectively),on which the following physicochemical analyzes were performed:Ca^(2+),Mg^(2+),K^(+),Na^(+),Cl^(-),SO_(4)^(2-),HCO_(3)^(-),NO_(3)^(-),pH,electrical conductivity(EC)and sodium adsorption ratio.A Principal Component Analysis was performed to individuate the geochemical processes that influenced significantly the evolution of soil salinity and its pathways.The results showed a calcium sulfate(CaSO_(4))facies with a high risk of salinity and a low to medium risk of alkalinity.The calcite residual alkalinity and generalized residual alkalinity decreased as the solutions became more concentrated.Most of the samples were oversaturated in carbonate minerals(aragonite,calcite,and dolomite)and under saturated in evaporitic minerals(anhydrite,gypsum,and halite).Finally,two multiple linear regressions(using cations and anions as independent variables)have been proposed to quantify soil salinity.These equations,with an accuracy of 85%,can represent a time and money-saving tool for managers and farmers to estimate the EC,in comparison to the traditional estimation methods. | Mohamed Amine Abdennour Abdelkader Douaoui Jesus Barrena Manuel Pulido Abdelhamid Bradai Amel Bennacer Chiara Piccini Alberto Alfonso-Torreno | 2021 | Acta Geochimica2021,40,2: | 2 |
