1Transcranial magnetic stimulation for geriatric depression: Promises and pitfalls显示文摘As the global population gets older, depression in the elderly is emerging as an important health issue. A major challenge in treating geriatric depression is the lack of robust efficacy for many treatments that are of significant benefit to depressed working age adults. Repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation(r TMS) is a novel physical treatment approach used mostly in working age adults with depression. Many TMS trials and clinics continue to exclude the elderly from treatment citing lack of evidence in this age group. In this review, we appraise the evidence regarding the safety and efficacy of rT MS in the elderly. A consistent observation supporting a high degree of tolerability and safety among the elderly patients emerged across the Randomised Controlled Trials and the uncontrolled trials. Further, there is no reliable evidence negating the utility of rT MS in the elderly with depression. We also identified several factors other than age that moderate the observed variations in the efficacy of rT MS in the elderly. These factors include but not limited to:(1) brain atrophy;(2) intensity and number of pulses(dose-response relationship); and(3) clinical profile of patients. On the basis of the current evidence, the practice of excluding elderly patients from TMS clinics and trials cannot be supported.Priyadharshini Sabesan Sudheer Lankappa Najat Khalifa Vasudevan Krishnan Rahul Gandhi Lena Palaniyappan 2015World Journal of Psychiatry2015,5,2:7
2Antimicrobial and hemolytic activity of fish epidermal mucus Cynoglossus arel and Arius caelatus显示文摘Objective:To study the antimicrobial, hemolytic activity and immunomodulatory activity of fish epidermal mucus and their chemical constituents from Cynoglossus arel(C.arel) and Alius caelatus(A.caelatus).Mucus plays an important role in the prevention of colonization by parasites, bacteria and fungi. Methods:Epidermal mucus was obtained from two marine fishes, lyophilized and the chemical composition of epidermal mucus was analysed by FT-IR analysis. The in vitro antimicrobial activity against human pathogens(fungi, gram positive and gram-negative bacteria) and also the hemolytic activity and immunomodulatory activity were determined. Results:Totally ten human pathogens were tested against the fish mucus.Out of the ten pathogens, five pathogens have proved to be sensitive to the mucus.Maximum zone of inhibition was observed against Vibrio cholera(V.cholera)(9 mm and 2 mm in diameter),followed by Staphylococcus aureus(S.aureus) with a inhibition zone of(6 mm and 3 mm),Streptococcus areus(S.areus)(5 mm and 4 mm),Vibrio parahemolyticus(V.parahemolyticus)(4 mm and 5 mm) respectively. Conclusions:The present investigation has revealed that positive progresses in the fish mucus extracts against human pathogens and hemolytic activity. But further efforts are required for the purification and isolation of the active antimicrobial compounds in order to establish their possible applications.Subramanian Bragadeeswaran Selvam Priyadharshini Kolandhasamy Prabhu Solomon Raj Sophia Rani 2011Asian Pacific Journal of Tropical Medicine2011,4,4:3
3Mine tailings as a raw material in alkali activation: A review显示文摘The mining industry produces billions of tons of mine tailings annually. However, because of their lack of economic value, most of the tailings are discarded near the mining sites, typically under water. The primary environmental concerns of mine tailings are related to their heavy metal and sulfidic mineral content.Oxidation of sulfidic minerals can produce acid mine drainage that leaches heavy metals into the surrounding water. The management of tailing dams requires expensive construction and careful control, and there is the need for stable, sustainable, and economically viable management technologies.Alkali activation as a solidification/stabilization technology offers an attractive way to deal with mine tailings.Alkali activated materials are hardened,concrete-like structures that can be formed from raw materials that are rich in aluminum and silicon, which fortunately, are the main elements in mining residues.Furthermore, alkali activation can immobilize harmful heavy metals within the structure. This review describes the research on alkali activated mine tailings. The reactivity and chemistry of different minerals are discussed.Since many mine tailings are poorly reactive under alkaline conditions, different pretreatment methods and their effects on the mineralogy are reviewed.Possible applications for these materials are also discussed.Jenni Kiventerä Priyadharshini Perumal Juho Yliniemi Mirja Illikainen 2020International Journal of Minerals,Metallurgy and Materials2020,27,8:3

7Effect of embedment length of untreated natural fibres on the bond behaviour in cement mortar显示文摘The present investigation is focused on studying the effects of various matrices with 1:3,1:4and 1:5 mortars and fibre types of sisal and coir on the bond behavior at various ages of curing,i.e.,24h,3d,7d and 28d.The other parameters included in the investigation are water/cement (w/c)ratio,sand gradation and embedment length of fibres. In addition, the type of failure of sisal and coir fibres for different mixes of mortars at various curing ages is also reported. From the results,it is seen that the bond strength is improving with respect to age of curing in case of sisal fibres, but decreases in case ofcoir fibres. The failure of fibres due to fibre fracture is observed in sisal fibres and fibre pullout is observed in coir fibres. The other varying parameters such as mortar mixes, sand gradation,w/c ratio and embedded length also showed significant effect on bond behaviour of sisal and coir fibre with the cement mortar mixes.Gudimella RAMAKRISHNA Sriraman PRIYADHARSHINI 2018Frontiers of Structural and Civil Engineering2018,12,4:1

14Growth response of three plantation species of the tropics exposed to elevated CO_2 levels显示文摘The response of forest trees, the largest carbon sinks on the earth, to continuing rise in atmospheric carbon levels is unknown. Reports state that increasing levels of atmospheric CO2 will stimulate photosynthesis and productivity in most ecosystems. However, the duration and magnitude of this stimulation, particularly in the tropics, remains a question. To investigate the effects of CO2 fertilization on plant growth, seedlings of three common plantation species, Casuarina equisetifolia, Ailanthus excelsa and Tectona grandis were grown in closed chambers enriched with CO2 . After 180 days of treatment, morphological traits of seedling height, biomass of root and shoot and root-shoot allometric co-efficient were measured. The activity of carbonic anhydrase and contents of chlorophylls, total carbohydrates and soluble proteins were determined. In Tectona grandis, significant effects of CO2 supply were found on chlorophylls, root-shoot allometric ratio and seedling quality index. Ailanthus excelsa showed significant effect on only the shoot characteristics on exposure to elevated CO2 but the root characteristics and concentrations of chlorophylls were not significantly different. Casuarina equisetifolia also showed significant effects on exposure to elevated CO2 in terms of shoot characteristics and concentrations of chlorophylls. Total sugars, the major photosynthates, did not show any significant variation to elevated CO2 in any of the three species. Carbonic anhydrase, the key enzyme responsible for transfer of CO2 into the tissues significantly increased in all three species. Overall, all the variables responded to elevated CO2 , reflecting the positive effects of one parameter of climate change conditions on seedling quality. A positive response of these three plantation species to elevated CO2 content is a good indication for their future existence in potentially changed climatic conditions.Rekha R. Warrier C.
