| 1 | The effect of Saccharomyces cerevisiae on digestion and mortality in the volcano rabbit(Romerolagus diazi)显示文摘An experiment was conducted to evaluate whether supplementation with a probiotic could enhance digestion and reduce mortality in the volcano rabbit in captivity. Two enclosures at Chapultepec Zoo, Mexico(114 individuals) were used in a crossover design(two periods of 60 days) with the following treatments: control group and supplementation with Saccharomyces cerevisiae(2×108 CFU/exhibit/day). Supplementation with the probiotic negatively affected(P<0.01) the digestibility of dry matter, organic matter, neutral detergent fiber(NDF) and energy. Mortality increased(P<0.04) following supplementation with the probiotic(4.26% vs. 8.89%), primarily in the juvenile rabbits. | 2 | Hirudotherapy attenuates arthritic pain in patients with various chronic pain syndromes: A retrospective analysis显示文摘Objective: Osteoarthritis is a degenerative disease that affects synovial joints. Micro-injuries of articular structures initiate inflammatory processes, leading to persistent pain. Due to various risk factors,osteoarthritis is often diagnosed in multimorbid patients. This makes pain management one of the key challenges, with a consistent need for new therapeutic strategies. Hence, complementary and integrative methods such as hirudotherapy have become increasingly important, even though their mechanisms of action are not entirely understood.Methods: We retrospectively analyzed the longitudinal effect of a single leech application on osteoarthritic joints in a heterogenic cohort of 24 cases with various chronic pain syndromes. We assessed articular pain intensity ratings and movability of the treated joint after one-time leeching for up to 12 months.We further investigated the effect of hirudotherapy on the systemic pain status and multimodal treatment strategies of the patients.Results: There was a significant reduction in pain intensity ratings at the joint of leech application for up to 12 months after treatment. The improvements in pain intensities were independent of the form of osteoarthritis treated. In addition, we saw a considerable enhancement in local movability of the treated joint. | 3 | The endophytic mycobiota of Arabidopsis thaliana显示文摘Fungal endophytes are receiving increasing attention as resources to improve crop production and ecosystem management.However,the biology and ecological significance of these symbionts remains poorly understood,due to a lack of model systems for more efficient research.In this work,we have analyzed the culturable endophytic mycobiota associated,in the wild,with leaves and siliques of the model plant A.thaliana.We have studied the effect of biotic and abiotic factors in the frequency of fungal endophytes in plant specimens,and in the species composition of the endophytic community.Our results indicate that the frequency of Arabidopsis plants hosting endophytes depends on the time of the year and the phenological stage of the plant,and that the probability of endophyte colonization increases as the life cycle of the plant progresses.The diversity of the endophytic assemblages of natural A.thaliana populations was high,and precipitation and temperature were the two main factors determining the diversity and species composition of the communities.We propose A.thaliana and its endophytes as a model system for an integral approach to the principles governing the endophytic lifestyle,taking advantage of the molecular tools and the abundant knowledge accessible from the host plant. | Elena García Ángela Alonso Gonzalo Platas Soledad Sacristán | 2013 | Fungal Diversity2013，，3： | 2 |
