| 9 | Present status of aquaculture and the challenge of bacterial diseases in freshwater farmed fish in Tanzania;A call for sustainable strategies显示文摘Aquaculture provides significant contributions to household food security,as the capture of wild fish from lakes,dams,and oceans do not meet the current demand for animal protein in Tanzania.Sustainable aquaculture requires well-established regulatory systems and extension services for good pond management practices and maintaining fish health by fish farmers.Fish farming is practiced widely in Tanzania,from small-to large-scale ponds and these farming systems are moving from extensive normal operations(low input demand)to intensive farming(high input demand).However,the industry is largely still operating at a subsistence level with low production.Bacterial infections have been occurring in these fish farms and will continue to be an issue of concern into the future.This review highlights the current challenges,successes,and prospects towards a sustainable aquaculture industry in Tanzania,including:limited extension services mirroring the limited knowledge by farmers regarding pond management practices;the inadequacy of funds to carry out fish disease research or implement a surveillance system;little expertise in fish disease diagnosis and treatment;and poor management options.To minimize disease outbreaks and optimize production in the future,we suggest a strengthening of extension services,augmented with on-farm knowledge transfer.Emphasis should be on pond management practices and fish disease management;the creation of a well-functioning fish disease surveillance system;and strengthening collaborative research on aquaculture between the government research institutions and academia.Establishing small cooperative fish farmer groups within the Aquaculture Association of Tanzania(AAT)for easy access to information is also recommended. | Alexanda Mzula Philemon N.Wambura Robinson H.Mdegela Gabriel M.Shirima | 2021 | Aquaculture and Fisheries2021,6,3: | 0 |
| 10 | Therapeutic efficacy of voltage‑gated sodium channel inhibitors in epilepsy显示文摘Epilepsy is a neurological disease characterized by excessive and abnormal hyper-synchrony of electrical discharges of the brain and a predisposition to generate epileptic seizures resulting in a broad spectrum of neurobiological insults,imposing psychological,cognitive,social and also economic burdens to the sufferer.Voltage-gated sodium channels(VGSCs)are essential for the generation and propagation of action potentials throughout the central nervous system.Dysfunction of these channels has been implicated in the pathogenesis of epilepsy.VGSC inhibitors have been demonstrated to act as anticonvulsants to suppress the abnormal neuronal firing underlying epileptic seizures,and are used for the management and treatment of both genetic-idiopathic and acquired epilepsies.We discuss the forms of idiopathic and acquired epilepsies caused by VGSC mutations and the therapeutic efficacy of VGSC blockers in idiopathic,acquired and pharmacoresistant forms of epilepsy in this review.We conclude that there is a need for better alternative therapies that can be used alone or in combination with VGSC inhibitors in the management of epilepsies.The current anti-seizure medications(ASMs)especially for pharmacoresistant epilepsies and some other types of epilepsy have not yielded expected therapeutic efficacy partly because they do not show subtype-selectivity in blocking sodium channels while also bringing side effects.Therefore,there is a need to develop novel drug cocktails with enhanced selectivity for specific VGSC isoforms,to achieve better treatment of pharmacoresistant epilepsies and other types of epileptic seizures. | John Agbo Zainab G.Ibrahim Shehu Y.Magaji Yahkub Babatunde Mutalub Philemon Paul Mshelia Daniel H.Mhyha | 2023 | Acta Epileptologica2023,6,2: | 0 |

| 12 | Pregnancy Rate of Bunaji Cows in a Fixed Time AI Synchronization Protocol Using Ovatide显示文摘This study accessed the reproductive performance of Bunaji cows in an Ovsynch protocol involving ovatide.Bunaji cows(n=16)aged 4-6 years and weighing between 250-350 kg with body condition scores(BCS)of 2.5-3.5 were used.There were two treatment groups for synchronization of ovulation.Treatment group 1 comprising Bunaji(n=8)received 50μg of gonadotropin releasing hormone(GnRH)(Cystorelin)and 25 mg of PGF2α.While,treatment group 2 comprising Bunaji(n=8)received 50μg of ovatide and 25 mg of PGF2α.All cows from both treatment groups were inseminated at 16 h after each second GnRH or ovatide injections.Cows that showed mucus discharge from the vagina on the day of artificial insemination(AI)were recorded as well as those that had patent cervix.Cervical dilation was measured by taking note of the cows that had mid cervix insemination due to non-passage of the AI gun through the cervix.Transrectal palpation was conducted twice at a month interval to select cycling cows within 5-12 d of the estrous cycle before initiating Ovsynch protocol.It was repeated on day 45 post AI to confirm pregnancies in animals.Results showed that the rate of mucus discharge from the vagina was 37.5%and 87.5%for ovatide and Cystorelin,respectively;while the rate of cervical dilation were 75%and 87.5%for ovatide and Cystorelin,respectively(p>0.05),and pregnancy rates were 0%and 12.5%for ovatide and Cystorelin,respectively.There were no significant differences between the two groups.It was concluded that treatment of Bunaji cows with 50μg ovatide in Ovsynh protocol has heat and ovulation synchronization potentials and zero pregnancy rate.It was recommended that further studies be carried out using graded doses of 50,100 and 150μg of ovatide in a fixed time AI synchronization protocol in Bunaji cows,to tap the potentials of the hormone in manipulation of bovine reproduction. | Ubah Simon Azubuike Rekwot Peter Ibrahim Adewuyi Abdulmujeeb Bode Omontese Bobwealth Oakina Adeyeye Adewale Ayodeji Columbus Philemon Kwinjoh Abah Owoicho Kenneth Agbonu Oluwa Adikpe Ejiofor Charles Ejike | 2019 | Journal of Agricultural Science and Technology(A)2019,9,1: | 0 |
