| 2 | ENSO signals and their spatial-temporal variation characteristics recorded by the sea-level changes in the northwest Pacific margin during 1965-2005显示文摘Sea-level is closely linked to the Earth's climate and its change is important as a metric for global and regional climate change. Identifying, extracting, and revealing such information through detailed analysis is the prerequisite for understanding the mechanisms of sea-level change. The monthlyaverage tide-change records reported and examined in this paper are from 10 tide gauge stations distributed in the northwest margin of the Pacific Ocean, registered during the period 1965-2005. In particular, we have utilized the Second Order Blind Identification (SOBI) method to identify and the Empirical Mode Decomposition (EMD) method to extract the El Nio-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) signals imprinted in those tide gauge records; and subsequently, we have investigated the spa-tial-temporal characteristics of the extracted ENSO signals using wavelet analysis methods. The following results are obtained: (1) the ENSO events recorded by each tide gauge series are of different types and intensity, which show considerable temporal-spatial variation characteristics, with sea-level responses to ENSO signals remarkably stronger in low latitude areas than in medium-high latitude areas; (2) due to the influences of ocean currents, topographical conditions, and other factors, there exist variations in the type of relationship between the sea-level changes and the recorded ENSO events at different latitudes; (3) sea-level changes can also denote scale-variation characteristics of ENSO events, and particularly, since 1980s, all the tide gauges located south of Kanmen show intense responses to ENSO and the timescale of ENSO events extended gradually from around 4 years to 2-8 years, reflecting variations in the intensity and frequency of ENSO events; and (4) reverse changes of certain scale were noted before and after strong ENSO events recorded by sea-level changes, supporting the research findings about the interaction (mutual coupling and superimposition) between the probability of occurrence of strong ENSO events and their time scale. | YUAN LinWang,YU ZhaoYuan,XIE ZhiRen,SONG ZhiYao & Lü GuoNian School of Geographical Science,Nanjing Normal University,Nanjing 210046,China | 2009 | Science China Earth Sciences2009,52,6: | 14 |

| 5 | Grassland Degradation and Its Control in Region AroundQinghai Lake显示文摘A quite severe degradation was found in all seven types of grasslands in the study area involving 12counties of the northwestern Qinghai Province. The slightly, moderately and severely degraded grasslandsoccupied 49.7%, 32.0% and 18.3% of the area respectively. | 7 | A mechanism for enhanced photocatalytic activity of nano-size silver particle modified titanium dioxide thin films显示文摘Ag-TiO2 nanostructured thin films with silver volume fraction of 0–20% were deposited on silicon and quartz substrates by RF magnetron sputtering and annealed in ambient air at 950°C for 1 h. The phase structure and surface topography of the films were characterized by X-ray diffractometer and transmission electron microscope. Photocatalytic activity of the films was evaluated by light induced degradation of methyl orange (C14H14N3NaO3S) solution using a high pressure mercury lamp as lamp-house. The relation of photocatalytic activity and silver content was studied in detail. It was found that silver content influences phase structure of TiO2 thin films, and silver in the films is metallic Ag (Ag0). With increasing silver content from 0 to 20 vol%, photocatalytic activity of the films increases first and then decreases. A suitable amount (2.5–5 vol%) silver addition can significantly enhance the photocatalytic activity of TiO2 films. | 8 | A Possible Long-tailed Bird with a Pygostyle from the Late Mesozoic Yixian Formation, Western Liaoning, China显示文摘An incomplete caudal vertebral series (IVPP V11309) from the Yixian Formation of late Mesozoic, Jianshangou area of Beipiao, western Liaoning Province, may represent a new bird. The tail is composed of at least 12 free caudal vertebrae and the most distal 5 caudal vertebrae co-ossified into a pygostyle. The pygostyle is plate-like and slightly curved dorsally. The anterior free caudals are amphiplatyan. The anterior caudal surfaces of the last three free caudals are concave, but their posterior articular surfaces are convex. The pygostyle is regarded as the first appeared flight apparatus during the evolutionary process from Archaeopteryx to neornithes. The pygostyle appeared in most early fossil birds and almost all the modern birds. Although their morphologies are different, they are basically formed by at least four last caudal vertebrae. The specimen V11309 is regarded as a bird rather than a non-avian theropod dinosaur based on the following characters: short caudal vertebrae, numerous pits present on the surfaces of the centra and, a foramen present between the basal part of the fused neural spines, which is similar to that of Struthio camelus. The discoveries of pygostyles from the therizinosauroids and oviraptorosaurs may provide strong evidence for supporting the origin of birds from small theropod dinosaurs. The structure of the pygostyle in specimen V11309 is different from those of Beipiaosaurus (Therizinosauroid) and Nomingia (oviraptorosaur). | 15 | Spectral anomalies and spectral switches of partially coherent and polychromatic light diffracted at an aperture显示文摘Based on the propagation theory of partially coherent light in the space-frequency domain, the anomalous spectral behavior and spectral switches in the far field of partially coherent and polychromatic light diffracted at an aperture are studied. It is shown that, as compared with spatially fully coherent and polychromatic light whose spectral anomalies are induced only by aperture diffraction, the spectral anomalies and spectral switches of partially coherent and polychromatic light depend on the aperture diffraction, spatial correlation b and bandwidth of the original spectrum. | 19 | TiO_2@MgO Core-Shell Film:Fabrication and Application to Dye-Sensitized Solar Cells显示文摘In this study,TiO2@MgO core-shell film was obtained by using a simple chemical bath deposition method to coat a thin MgO film around TiO2 nanoparticles. The core-shell configuration was characterized by X-ray diffractometer (XRD),scanning elec-tron microscopy (SEM),energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX),and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM). Lattice fringes were observed for the TiO2 particles,and the MgO shell showed an amorphous structure,revealing a clear distinction between the core and shell materials. Applying the core-shell film as photoanode to the dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs),it shows a superior performance compared to the pure TiO2 electrode. | 20 | Estimation of suspended sediment concentration based on bio-optical mechanism and HJ-1 image in Chaohu Lake显示文摘Synchronization experiment was conducted in June,2009 to get Inherent Optical Properties(IOP) of water component in Chaohu Lake.Water bio-optical mechanism was studied combined with multispectral data of Environmental Satellite 1(CCD),and then inversion models of total suspended matter(TSM),inorganic suspended matter(ISM) and organic suspended matter(OSM) concentration were built.The data indicated that:the absorption ratio of suspended particulate matter and CDOM to total were almost no change from band 1 to band 2 with about 85% and 9%,respectively.The ratio of pure water to total increased from 0.4% to 5.6%.Water reflectance in these two bands were influenced by absorption of three kinds of components:algae particles absorption surpassed non-algal particles in band 3,and so played an important role in total absorption with about 35.7%;the proportion of pure water absorption and particles matter backscattering both were 99% in band 4,so these two components decided the main inherent optical properties in band 4.The models of TSM and ISM concentration inversion based on band combination(band 3 + band 4)/(band 1 + band 2) were built,while OSM concentration was estimated by band 4/(band 1 + band 2) index.Inversed by image data,RE of TSM concentration between modeled and measured was 33.4%,and RMSE was 18.68 mg/L.RE of ISM and OSM concentration were 39.9% and 35.2% respectively.The inversion was more accurate when satellite-ground data were just in the same day.At this situation,RE of ISM concentration dropped to 25.4%,and that of TSM and OSM reduced to 26.5% and 26.8% as well. | WANG Qiao1,2,JIN Xin2,LI YunMei2,WU ChuanQing1,Lü Heng2,WANG YanFei2,ZHANG Hong2,YIN Bin2 & ZHU Li1 1Satellite Environment Center,Ministry of Environmental Protection,Beijing 100029,China 2Key Laboratory of Virtual Geographic Environment of Education Ministry,Nanjing Normal University,Nanjing 210046,China | 2010 | Science China Earth Sciences2010,53,S1: | 1 |
