| 1 | Critical role of SDF-1/CXCR4 signaling pathway in stem cell homing in the deafened rat cochlea after acoustic trauma显示文摘Previous animal studies have shown that stromal cell-derived factor-1(SDF-1)/CXC chemokine receptor-4(CXCR4) signaling pathway plays an important role in the targeted migration of bone marrow-derived mesenchymal stem cells(BMSCs) to the injured area. In the present study, we aimed to investigate the potential role of chemotactic SDF-1/CXCR4 signaling pathway in the homing of transplanted BMSCs to the injured cochlea after noise-induced hearing loss(NIHL) in a rat model. White noise exposure(110 d B) paradigm was used for hearing loss induction in male rats for 6 hours in 5 days. Distortion-product otoacoustic emission(DPOAE) responses were recorded before the experiment and post noise exposure. Hoechst 33342-labeled BMSCs and CXCR4 antagonist(AMD3100)-treated BMSCs were injected into the rat cochlea through the round window. SDF-1 protein expression in the cochlear tissue was assayed using western blot assay. The number of labeled BMSCs reaching the endolymph was determined after 24 hours. SDF-1 was significantly increased in the cochlear tissue of rats in the noise exposure group than in the control group. The number of Hoechst 33342-labeled BMSCs reaching the endolymph of the cochlea was significantly smaller in the AMD3100-treated BMSCs group than in the normal BMSCs group. | 4 | Single-step transepithelial photorefractive keratectomy in high myopia:qualitative and quantitative visual functions显示文摘AIM:To investigate quantitative and qualitative optical outcomes of single-step transepithelial photorefractive keratectomy(Trans PRK)in high myopia.METHODS:In a prospective interventional case-series,30 eyes with high myopia(-6.00 to-8.75 D)with(up to-3.00 D)or without astigmatism were enrolled from Bina Eye Hospital,Tehran,Iran. One-step Trans PRK was performed with aberration-free aspherical optimized profile and SCHWIND AMARIS 500 laser. One-year follow-up results for refraction,visual acuities,vector analysis,ocular wavefront(OWF)and corneal wave-front(CWF)higher order aberrations(HOA),contrast sensitivity(CS),and postoperative haze were assessed.RESULTS:After the surgery,both photopic and mesopic CSs significantly improved(both P<0.001). We detected significant induction of OWF coma and trefoil(P<0.001 for both)HOAs; CWF coma(P=0.002),spherical(P<0.001),and tetrafoil(P=0.003)HOAs in 6 mm analysis diameter; and CWF trefoil(P=0.04)HOA in 4 mm analysis diameter. The range of mean induction observed for various HOAs was0.005-0.11 μm. The 86.7% of eyes reached an uncorrected distance visual acuity of 20/20 or better; 96.7% of eyes were within ±0.5 D of targeted spherical refraction. In vector analysis,mean correction index value was 1.03 and mean index of success was 0.22. By 12mo after the operation,no eye lost any number of corrected distancevisual acuity lines. We detected no corneal haze greater than 1^+ throughout the follow-up.CONCLUSION:Our findings show promising effects of single-step Trans PRK on quality of vision in high myopic eyes. | 5 | Prediction of kiwifruit firmness using fruit mineral nutrient concentration by artificial neural network(ANN) and multiple linear regressions(MLR)显示文摘Many properties of fruit are influenced by plant nutrition. Fruit firmness is one of the most important fruit characteristics and determines post-harvest life of the fruit. In recent decades, artificial intelligence systems were employed for developing predictive models to estimate and predict many agriculture processes. In the present study, the predictive capabilities of multiple linear regressions(MLR) and artificial neural networks(ANNs) are evaluated to estimate fruit firmness in six months, including each of nutrients concentrations(nitrogen(N), potassium(K), calcium(Ca) and magnesium(Mg)) alone(P_1), combination of nutrients concentrations(P_2), nutrient concentration ratios alone(P_3), and combination of nutrient concentrations and nutrient concentration ratios(P_4). The results showed that MLR model estimated fruit firmness more accuracy than ANN model in three datasets(P_1, P_2 and P_4). However, the application of P_3(N/Ca ratio) as the input dataset in ANN model improved the prediction of fruit firmness than the MLR model. Correlation coefficient and root mean squared error(RMSE) were 0.850 and 0.539 between the measured and the estimated data by the ANN model, respectively. The results showed that this heterogeneous catalyst has high catalytic activity and the desired products were obtained in good to high yields. | 8 | Application of dielectric barrier discharge(DBD) plasma packed with glass and ceramic pellets for SO_2 removal at ambient temperature: optimization and modeling using response surface methodology显示文摘Air pollution is a major health problem in developing countries and has adverse effects on human health and the environment. Non-thermal plasma is an effective air pollution treatment technology. In this research, the performance of a dielectric barrier discharge(DBD) plasma reactor packed with glass and ceramic pellets was evaluated in the removal of SO_2 as a major air pollutant from air in ambient temperature. The response surface methodology was used to evaluate the effect of three key parameters(concentration of gas, gas flow rate, and voltage) as well as their simultaneous effects and interactions on the SO2 removal process. Reduced cubic models were derived to predict the SO_2 removal efficiency(RE) and energy yield(EY). Analysis of variance results showed that the packed-bed reactors(PBRs) studied were more energy efficient and had a high SO2 RE which was at least four times more than that of the non-packed reactor. Moreover, the results showed that the performance of ceramic pellets was better than that of glass pellets in PBRs. This may be due to the porous surface of ceramic pellets which allows the formation of microdischarges in the fine cavities of a porous surface when placed in a plasma discharge zone. The maximum SO_2 RE and EY were obtained at 94% and 0.81 g kWh^(-1),respectively under the optimal conditions of a concentration of gas of 750 ppm, a gas flow rate of 2lmin^(-1), and a voltage of 18 kV, which were achieved by the DBD plasma packed with ceramic pellets. | 12 | Using shape contexts method for registration of contra lateral breasts in thermal images显示文摘AIM: To achieve symmetric boundaries for left and right breasts boundaries in thermal images by registration. METHODS: The proposed method for registration consists of two steps. In the first step, shape context, an approach as presented by Belongie and Malik was applied for registration of two breast boundaries. The shape context is an approach to measure shape similarity. Two sets of finite sample points from shape contours of two breasts are then presented. Consequently, the correspondences between the two shapes are found. By finding correspondences, the sample point which has the most similar shape context is obtained. RESULTS: In this study, a line up transformation which maps one shape onto the other has been estimated in order to complete shape. The used of a thin plate spline permitted good estimation of a plane transformation which has capability to map unselective points from one shape onto the other. The obtained aligningtransformation of boundaries points has been applied successfully to map the two breasts interior points. Some of advantages for using shape context method in this work are as follows:(1) no special land marks or key points are needed;(2) it is tolerant to all common shape deformation; and(3) although it is uncomplicated and straightforward to use, it gives remarkably powerful descriptor for point sets significantly upgrading point set registration. Results are very promising. The proposed algorithm was implemented for 32 cases.
