2Effects of nitrogen, phosphorus and vermicompost on groundnut yield in Babile District, eastern Ethiopia显示文摘Groundnut is a major cash crop for smallholder farmers in several districts of eastern Ethiopia with low yield. Little or no fertilizer was applied for the crop possibly because no generic or recommended fertilizer and technology were available. Therefore, field experiments were conducted for 2 consecutive cropping seasons in Babile District, to investigate effects of applying mineral N and P fertilizer and vermicompost (VC) on seed yield and oil content of groundnut using an improved variety ‘BaHa-Gudo’. Treatments consisted of nitrogen (0,23 and 46 kg N/ha), phosphorus (0,46 and 92 kg P2O5/ha) and VC (0,2.5 and 5 t VC/ha). Results revealed that yield attributes, seed yield and seed oil content were significantly (p < 0.01) affected by fertilizers. Seed yield after combined application of 46 kg N, 46 kg P2O5 and 2.5 t VC/ha increased by about 113% compared to seed yield without any fertilizers. Enhancement in seed oil content at the aforementioned rate was 7.0%. It could, thus, be concluded that applying the aforementioned fertilizers would enable farmers to increase seed yield and oil content of groundnut for enhancing their income and livelihoods in the study area.Getachew Bekele Nigussie Dechassa Tamado Tana J.J.Sharma 2019Oil Crop Science2019,4,2:2

4Tree species diversity predicts aboveground carbon storage through functional diversity and functional dominance in the dry evergreen Afromontane forest of Hararghe highland, Southeast Ethiopia显示文摘Background:Regarding the most important ecological challenges,scientists are increasingly debating the relationship between biodiversity and ecosystem function.Despite this,several experimental and theoretical researches have shown inconsistencies in biodiversity and ecosystem function relationships,supporting either the niche complementarity or selection effect hypothesis.The relationship between species diversity,functional diversity,and aboveground biomass carbon was investigated in this study employing standing aboveground carbon(AGC)stock as a proxy measure for ecosystem function.We hypothesized that(i)effects of diversity on AGC can be transmitted through functional diversity and functional dominance;(ii)effects of diversity on AGC would be greater for functional dominance than functional diversity;and(iii)effects of functional diversity and functional dominance on carbon stock varied with metrics and functional traits.Community-weighted means(CWM)of functional traits(wood density,specific leaf area,and maximum plant height)were calculated to assess functional dominance(selection effects).As for functional diversity(complementarity effects),multi-trait functional diversity(selection effects)indices were computed.We tested the first hypothesis using structural equation modeling.For the second hypothesis,the effects of environmental variables such as slope,aspect,and elevation were tested first,and separate linear mixed-effects models were fitted afterward for functional diversity,functional dominance,and the two together.Results:Results revealed that slope had a significant effect on aboveground carbon storage.Functional diversity and functional dominance were significant predictors of the aboveground carbon storage(22.4%)in the dry evergreen Afromontane forest.The effects of species richness on aboveground carbon storage were mediated by functional diversity and functional dominance of species.This shows that both the selection effects and the niche complementarity are important for aboveground carbon storage prediction.However,the functional diversity effects(niche complementarity)were greater than functional dominance effects(selection effects).Conclusions:Linking diversity and biodiversity components to aboveground carbon provides better insights into the mechanisms that explain variation in aboveground carbon storage in natural forests,which may help improve the prediction of ecosystem functions.Mengistu Teshome Wondimu Zebene Asfaw Nigussie Muktar Mohammed Yusuf 2021Ecological Processes2021,10,1:2
5Ocular manifestation and their associated factors among HIV/AIDS patients receiving highly active antiretroviral therapy in Southern Ethiopia显示文摘AIM:To assess the pattern of ocular manifestation and associated factors among human immunodeficiency virus(HIV)/acquired immunodeficiency syndrome(AIDS) patients on highly active antiretroviral therapy(HAART) at Hawassa University Referral Hospital, Southern Ethiopia. METHODS:A cross sectional study was conducted from January 2014 to April 2015. After obtaining informed written consent, 240 adult HIV/AIDS patients on HAART were randomly selected regardless of their ophthalmic symptoms, WHO status or CD4 count. Data were collected using structured questionnaires and ophthalmologic clinical examination. Data were entered and analyzed using SPSS version 20.0 software. RESULTS:The mean duration of HAART was 62.5mo. The prevalence of HIV related ocular manifestation was 14.2%. Seborrheic blepharitis(5%) was the most common ocular manifestation, followed by squamoid conjunctival growth(3.8%). The rate of ocular manifestation was significantly higher among study participants who had CD4+ count <200 cells/μL(AOR=3.83; 95%CI:1.315-11.153), low duration of HAART(AOR=3.0; 95%CI:1.305-6.891) and who had primary school education [odds ratio(OR) =2.8; 95%CI:1.105-7.099]. Prevalence of visual impairment and blindness was 10.9% and 5.8%, respectively.CONCLUSION:HAART may be the reason for the decline in the prevalence of ocular manifestation in HIV/AIDS patients in the study area. 7Effect of inorganic and organic fertilizers on productivity of groundnut(Arachis hypogaea L.)varieties in East Hararghe,Eastern Ethiopia显示文摘Groundnut(Arachis hypogaea L.)is a high economic value oil crop commonly grown in low-land semi-arid areas of Ethiopia.The crop production is constrained by low soil fertility;however,the nutrient management practice has been given low attention.This study was therefore conducted during the main cropping season of 2015/2016 at Babile and Fedis sites of East Hararghe,Ethiopia to evaluate the growth,nodulation,and yield response of groundnut varieties to the application of combined mineral nitrogen,phosphorus,and vermicompost fertilizers,and zinc.Treatments consisted of a factorial combination of three varieties(Ba-ha-Gudo,Ba-ha-Jidu,and Roba);three fertilizers combinations(0:0 kg N:POhawith no VC,46:46 kg N:POhawith no VC,and 46:46 kg N:POhawith 2.5 t VC ha);and three rates of Zn(0,5,and 10 kg Zn ha)in a randomized complete block design at both sites.The growth,nodulation,yield components,and yield data were subjected to analysis by SAS.The result revealed that plant height was significantly affected by variety and fertilizers combination,the number of branches plant-1affected by the interaction of variety and fertilizers combination while canopy spread and nodulation parameters were affected by the interaction of variety,fertilizers combination,and Zn rate.Pod plant-1and hundred seed weight,dry biomass,pod and seed yields,and seed oil content were significantly affected by the interaction of variety,fertilizers combination,and Zn rate.The highest dry biomass(7.26 t ha),pod(3.13 t ha),seed(2.16 t ha)yields and seed oil content(51.3%),net benefit($1704.2 ha)with a marginal rate of return of 242%were obtained from variety Ba-ha Gudo received the combined application of 46:46 kg N:POhaand 2.5 t VC hawith 5 kg Zn ha.Therefore,it can be concluded that the Ba-ha Gudo variety is preferably produced using the combined application of 46:46 kg N:POhaand 2.5 t VC hawith 5kg Zn hafor high productivity in the study sites and similar agro-ecologies.Getachew Bekele Nigussie Dechassa Tamado Tana 2022Oil Crop Science2022,7,3:1

12Effect of Polyacrylamide integrated with other soil amendments on runoff and soil loss:Case study from northwest Ethiopia显示文摘Anionic polyacrylamide(PAM)has the potential to reduce soil erosion through soil conditioning.However,a comprehensive study about its effectiveness especially when applied combined with other amendments have rarely been conducted in the tropical highland climatic conditions,such as in Ethiopia.The study assessed the effectiveness of PAM(P=40 kg ha^(-1))alone or integrated with other soil amendments such as gypsum(G=5 t ha^(-1)),lime(L=4 t ha^(-1))and biochar(B=8 t ha^(-1))on runoff and soil loss at Aba Gerima watershed in the Upper Blue Nile basin,northwest of Ethiopia,where there is high erosion-caused soil degradation.A total of 79 daily runoff and sediment data were collected from eight runoff plots(1.3m×4m)with three replications planted with teff(Eragrostis tef)crop for two years(2018&2019)rainy seasons.Associated changes in soil physicochemical properties and crop growth parameters were investigated.Treatments reduced seasonal runoff by 12–39%and soil loss by 13–53%.The highest reduction in runoff was observed from P+B and PAM treatments while the highest reduction in soil loss was observed from that of P+L and PAM treatments.Integrating PAM with other amendments improved soil structural stability,moisture content,soil pH(P+L)and organic matter(P+B),leading to favorable environment for crop growth(biomass yield)and reduced runoff and soil erosion.Unlike PAM,biochar and lime amendments may need more time after application to be more effective.Hence continuing the field experiment and studying physico-chemical mechanisms for extended period will better elucidate their single or combined effectiveness over time.Birhanu Kebede Atsushi Tsunekawa Nigussie Haregeweyn Mitsuru Tsubo Temesgen Mulualem Amrakh I.Mamedov Derege Tsegaye Meshesha Enyew Adgo Ayele Almaw Fenta Kindiye Ebabu Tsugiyuki Masunaga 2022International Soil and Water Conservation Research2022,10,3:1
