| 1 | Bulk and bubble-scale experimental studies of influence of nanoparticles on foam stability显示文摘Influence of silicon oxide(SiO_2) and aluminum oxide(Al_2O_3) nanoparticles on the stability of nanoparticles and sodium dodecyl sulfate(SDS) mixed solution foams was studied at bulk and bubble-scale. Foam apparent viscosity was also determined in Hele-Shaw cell In order to investigate the foam performance at static and dynamic conditions. Results show that the maximum adsorption of surfactant on the nanoparticles occurs at 3 wt% surfactant concentration. Foam stability increases while the foamability decreases with the increasing nanoparticle concentration. However, optimum nanoparticle concentration corresponding to maximum foam stability was obtained at 1.0 wt% nanoparticle concentration for the hydrophilic SiO_2/SDS and Al_2O_3/SDS foams. Foam performance was enhanced with increasing nanoparticles hydrophobicity. Air-foams were generally more stable than CO_2 foams.Foam apparent viscosity increased in the presence of nanoparticles from 20.34 mPa·s to 84.84 mPa·s while the film thickness increased from 27.5 μm to 136 μm. This study suggests that the static and dynamic stability of conventional foams could be improved with addition of appropriate concentration of nanoparticles into the surfactant solution. The nanoparticles improve foam stability by their adsorption and aggregation at the foam lamellae to increase film thickness and dilational viscoelasticity. | 10 | Improved process monitoring using the CUSUM and EWMA-based multiscale PCA fault detection framework显示文摘Process monitoring techniques are of paramount importance in the chemical industry to improve both the product quality and plant safety.Small or incipient irregularities may lead to severe degradation in complex chemical processes,and the conventional process monitoring techniques cannot detect these irregularities.In this study to improve the performance of monitoring,an online multiscale fault detection approach is proposed by integrating multiscale principal component analysis(MSPCA) with cumulative sum(CUSUM) and exponentially weighted moving average(EWMA) control charts.The new Hotelling's T~2 and square prediction error(SPE) based fault detection indices are proposed to detect the incipient irregularities in the process data.The performance of the proposed fault detection methods was tested for simulated data obtained from the CSTR system and compared to that of conventional PCA and MSPCA based methods.The results demonstrate that the proposed EWMA based MSPCA fault detection method was successful in detecting the faults.Moreover,a comparative study shows that the SPEEWMA monitoring index exhibits a better performance with lower values of missed detections ranging from 0% to 0.80% and false alarms ranging from 0% to 21.20%. | Muhammad Nawaz Abdulhalim Shah Maulud Haslinda Zabiri Syed Ali Ammar Taqvi Alamin Idris | 2021 | Chinese Journal of Chemical Engineering2021,34,1: | 1 |

| 14 | Seasonal malaria chemoprevention in Africa and China's upgraded role as a contributor:a scoping review显示文摘Background Children under five are the vulnerable population most at risk of being infected with Plasmodium para-sites,especially in the Sahel region.Seasonal malaria chemoprevention(SMC)recommended by World Health Organi-zation(WHO),has proven to be a highly effective intervention to prevent malaria.Given more deaths reported during the COVID-19 pandemic than in previous years due to the disruptions to essential medical services,it is,therefore,necessary to seek a more coordinated and integrated approach to increasing the pace,coverage and resilience of SMC.Towards this end,fully leverage the resources of major players in the global fight against malaria,such as China could accelerate the SMC process in Africa.Methods We searched PubMed,MEDLINE,Web of Science,and Embase for research articles and the Institutional Repository for Information Sharing of WHO for reports on SMC.We used gap analysis to investigate the challenges and gaps of SMC since COVID-19.Through the above methods to explore China's prospective contribution to SMC.Results A total of 68 research articles and reports were found.Through gap analysis,we found that despite the delays in the SMC campaign,11.8 milion children received SMC in 2020.However,there remained some challenges:(1)a shortage of fully covered monthly courses;(2)lack of adherence to the second and third doses of amodiaquine;(3)four courses of SMC are not sufficient to cover the entire malaria transmission season in areas where the peak transmission lasts longer;(4)additional interventions are needed to consolidate SMC efforts.China was certified malaria-free by WHO in 2021,and its experience and expertise in malaria elimination can be shared with high-burden countries.With the potential to join the multilateral cooperation in SMC,including the supply of quality-assured health commodities,know-how transfer and experience sharing,China is expected to contribute to the ongoing Scale-up of SMC.Conclusions A combination of necessary preventive and curative activities may prove beneficial both for targeted populations and for health system strengthening in the long run.More actions are entailed to promote the partner-ship and China can be one of the main contributors with various roles. | Ming Xu Yun-Xuan Hu Shen-Ning Lu Muhammad Abdullahi Idris Shu-Duo Zhou Jian Yang Xiang-Ning Feng Yang-Mu Huang Xian Xu Ying Chen Duo-Quan Wang | 2023 | Infectious Diseases of Poverty2023,12,4: | 0 |

This paper aims at investigating the nature of noun phrase(NP) focus in Fulfulde with particular reference to Adamawa dialect. The study employed two methodological techniques for data collection: observation and oral interview. These techniques were used in collecting data from different categories of native speakers. The Principles and Parameters theory was adopted as the theoretical framework for data analysis in the study. The study shows that noun phrase NP focus in Adamawa dialect of Fulfulde involves movement of the focused element which is accompanied with a focus marker(FM). The study has identified five different FMs that are commonly used in the dialect depending on the semantic requirement. | 16 | Rhizosphere microbiomes can regulate plant drought tolerance显示文摘Beneficial root-associated rhizospheric microbes play a key role in maintaining host plant growth and can potentially allow drought-resilient crop production. The complex interaction of root-associated microbes mainly depends on soil type, plant genotype, and soil moisture. However, drought is the most devastating environmental stress that strongly reduces soil biota and can restrict plant growth and yield. In this review, we discussed our mechanistic understanding of drought and microbial response traits. Additionally, we highlighted the role of beneficial microbes and plant-derived metabolites in alleviating drought stress and improving crop growth. We proposed that future research might focus on evaluating the dynamics of root-beneficial microbes under field drought conditions. | 18 | Can outer-to-outer diameter be used alone in diagnosing appendicitis on 128-slice MDCT?显示文摘AIM: To assess the frequency of visualization, position and diameter of normal appendix on 128-slice multidetector computed tomography(MDCT) in adult population.METHODS: Retrospective cross sectional study conducted at Radiology Department, Dallah Hospital, Riyadh, Saudi Arabia from March 2013 to October 2013. Non-enhanced computed tomography scans of abdomen and pelvis of 98 patients presenting with hematuria(not associated with abdominal pain, fever or colonic disease) were reviewed by two radiologists, blinded to patient history. The study group included 55 females and 43 males with overall mean age of 54.7 years(range 21 to 94 years). The coronal reformatted images were reviewed in addition to the axial images. The frequency of visualization of appendix was recorded with assessment of position, diameter and luminal contents.RESULTS: The appendix was recorded as definitely visualized in 99% of patients and mean outer-to-outer diameter of the appendix was 5.6 ± 1.3 mm(range 3.0-11.0 mm).CONCLUSION: MDCT with its multiplanar reformation display is extremely useful for visualization of normal appendix. The normal appendix is very variable in its position and diameter. | 19 | Toxicity of Radon-222 in Groundwater across Keana in Nasarawa,Nigeria显示文摘The most common supply of freshwater for drinking,irrigation,and other domestic uses is groundwater;however,because of increased radon concentrations brought on by mining activities,its quality is still a severe concern.Using a liquid scintillation detector,this study investigated the radon content,its related toxicity,and its risk to human health in the groundwater of the Keana in Nasarawa,Nigeria.Ten(10)borehole samples and five(5)well samples totaling fifteen(15)groundwater samples were taken.The results showed that the average radon concentration in water samples from Keana was 2.25 Bq/L.The mean annual effective dosage(ingestion)for adults and children in Keana was 0.016 mSv/y and 0.027 mSv/y,respectively.In Keana,the additional lifetime cancer risk per adult was 5.65×10^(-5),and per child,it was 8.79×10^(-5).The study’s radon concentration was lower than the benchmark of 11.1 Bq/L established in 1991 by the Nigerian Standard Organization and the US Environmental Protection Agency.The results of this study indicate that the level of radon is safe;as a result,people can continue farming and other activities.To reduce the risk of cancer,however,more research could be done in the area.Further research should be done by looking at additional sources in the study area in order to cover the entire zone.Further investigation should be carried out both during the dry and wet seasons because radon concentrations in groundwater alter over time due to dilution by recharge from rainfall. | Abubakar Saidu Bako Usman Rilwan Ibrahim Umar Samson Dauda Yusuf Idris Muhammad Mustapha Abdullahi Abubakar Mundi Ibrahim Maina | 2023 | Advances in Geological and Geotechnical Engineering Research2023,5,2: | 0 |
