1Effects of plastic sheet on water saving and yield under furrow irrigation method in semi-arid region显示文摘The increasing demand of water in the country highlights the need to introduce low-input and water saving technologies for agricultural sustainability and crop production, mainly in semi-arid region.A study was conducted to minimize deep percolation losses from the furrow bottom under two different irrigation treatments viz.(1)furrow bottom with plastic sheet(T1)and(2)furrow bottom without plastic Sheet(T0).The physical and chemical analyses of soil profile were taken at a depth of 0-80 cm before and after crop harvesting. The dry density of soil slightly increased(0.01 g/cm^(3))under both treatments, while soil pH decreased under T1.The average yield was 8332 kg/hm^(2) and 7575 kg/hm^(2),with 21.56 m^(3) and 31.09 m^(3) total volume of irrigation water applied under T1and T0,respectively.The saving percentages of water under treatments were 52.22% and 31.00% under T1 and T0 respectively as compared to the saving of water under traditional irrigation practice.Overall, better performance,in terms of crop production and water saving, was obtained with use of plastic sheet integrated with bottom of furrows.Hence,it is suggested that the furrow irrigation method with plastic sheet may be used to preventing moisture and minimize deep percolation losses from furrow bottom.Muhammad Sohail Memon Kausar Ali Altaf Ali Siyal Jun Guo Shamim Ara Memon Shakeel Ahmed Soomro Noreena Memon Changying Ji 2018International Journal of Agricultural and Biological Engineering2018,11,1:2
2An improved technique for global daily sunshine duration estimation using satellite imagery显示文摘This paper presents an improved model for global sunshine duration estimation. The methodology incorporates geostationary satellite images by including snow cover information, sun and satellite angles and a trend correction factor for seasons, for the determination of cloud cover index. The effectiveness of the proposed methodology has been tested using Meteosat geostationary satellite images in the visible band with a temporal resolution of 1 h and spatial resolution of 2.5 km×2.5 km,for the Brue Catchment in the southwest of England.Validation results show a significant improvement in the estimation of global sunshine duration by the proposed method as compared to its predecessor(R 2 is improved from 0.68 to 0.83,root mean squared error(RMSE) from 2.37 h/d to 1.19 h/d and the mean biased error(MBE) from 0.21 h/d to 0.08 h/d).Further studies are needed to test this method in other parts of the world with different climate and geographical conditions.Muhammad Ali SHAMIM Renji REMESAN Da-wei HAN Naeem EJAZ Ayub ELAHI 2012Journal of Zhejiang University-Science A(Applied Physics & Engineering)2012,13,9:1
3Litter decay in rangeland sites with varying history of human disturbance: a study with Hazargangi Chiltan mountain显示文摘Hazarganji Chiltan National Park in Balochistan, Pakistan was established in 1980 and the protected area was further extended in 1998. Large area of this mountain is still open for unmanaged human disturbances such as collection of wood for fuel purpose and livestock grazing. Removal of vegetation of rangelands has a significant negative impact on soil organic matter(SOM). This research evaluates litter decomposition in three sites of Hazarganji Chiltan mountain with varying history of human disturbances(unprotected site, young protected site and old protected site). Twigs of Pistacia khinjuk with approximately equal weight and length were placed in litter bags of mesh size 2 mm and were buried in 0-5 cm depth in three sites in January. Half of the twigs of each site received rain simulation in April, August, October, November and January while the other half of the twigs were subjected under natural conditions for 15 months. Twigs from each plot of each treatment of each site were collected from soil after every rain simulation in the previous month of experiment and were processed for weight loss assessment. Results showed that weight loss of twigs by decomposition was significantly higher in the soil of unprotected site as compared to other two sites and there was no difference between rain simulation and control treatments except that loss of weight of twigs of unprotected site was higher under control than rain simulation condition. To confirm that SOM was the major controlling factor for the decomposition of litter decay, soils of each site were collected and burned to remove SOM;thereafter, burned soil samples were mixed with homogenous powder of oven-dried native plants, incubated for 6 months and were provided with dissolved organic matter of the soils of each site. Results showed that there was no difference in the decomposition of litter between soils under controlled laboratory condition, which confirmed that SOM was a major controlling factor for the litter decay in soil under field conditions. The pyrosequencing analysis of the DNA of soils collected from three sites revealed the presence of bacterial species Thermovum composti.Imran KHAN Shamim GUL Sarfraz AHMAD Gul Bano REHMAN Agha Waqar YUNUS Iram GUL Imran ALI Ali AKBAR Muhammad ISLAM 2020Journal of Mountain Science2020,17,4:0
