| 1 | Survival and outcomes for co-infection of chronic hepatitis C with and without cirrhosis and COVID-19: A multicenter retrospective study显示文摘BACKGROUND Chronic liver disease,particularly cirrhosis,is associated with worse outcomes in patients infected with coronavirus disease 2019(COVID-19).AIM To assess outcomes of COVID-19 infection among patients with pre-existing hepatitis C with or without liver cirrhosis.METHODS This multicenter,retrospective cohort study included all cases of confirmed coinfection of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 and chronic hepatitis C with or without liver cirrhosis who were admitted to six hospitals(Al-Sahel Hospital,Al-Matareya Hospital,Al-Ahrar Hospital,Ahmed Maher Teaching Hospital,Al-Gomhoreya Hospital,and the National Hepatology and Tropical Medicine Research Institute)affiliated with the General Organization for Teaching Hospitals and Institutes in Egypt.Patients were recruited from May 1,2020,to July 31,2020.Demographic,laboratory,imaging features,and outcomes were collected.Multivariate regression analysis was performed to detect factors affecting mortality.RESULTS This retrospective cohort study included 125 patients with chronic hepatitis C and COVID-19 co-infection,of which 64(51.20%)had liver cirrhosis and 40(32.00%)died.Fever,cough,dyspnea,and fatigue were the most frequent symptoms in patients with liver cirrhosis.Cough,sore throat,fatigue,myalgia,and diarrhea were significantly more common in patients with liver cirrhosis than in noncirrhotic patients.There was no difference between patients with and without cirrhosis regarding comorbidities.Fifteen patients(23.40%)with liver cirrhosis presented with hepatic encephalopathy.Patients with liver cirrhosis were more likely than non-cirrhotic patients to have combined ground-glass opacities and consolidations in CT chest scans:28(43.75%)vs 4(6.55%),respectively(P value<0.001).These patients also were more likely to have severe COVID-19 infection,compared to patients without liver cirrhosis:29(45.31%)vs 11(18.04%),respectively(P value<0.003).Mortality was higher in patients with liver cirrhosis,compared to those with no cirrhosis:33(51.56%)vs 9(14.75%),respectively(P value<0.001).All patients in Child-Pugh class A recovered and were discharged.Cirrhotic mortality occurred among decompensated patients only.A multivariate regression analysis revealed the following independent factors affecting mortality:Male gender(OR 7.17,95%CI:2.19–23.51;P value=0.001),diabetes mellitus(OR 4.03,95%CI:1.49–10.91;P value=0.006),and liver cirrhosis(OR 1.103,95%CI:1.037–1.282;P value<0.0001).We found no differences in liver function,COVID-19 disease severity,or outcomes between patients who previously received direct-acting antiviral therapy(and achieved sustained virological response)and patients who did not receive this therapy.CONCLUSION Patients with liver cirrhosis are susceptible to higher severity and mortality if infected with COVID-19.Male gender,diabetes mellitus,and liver cirrhosis are independent factors associated with increased mortality risk. | Shimaa Afify Basem Eysa Fatma Abdel Hamid Omnia M Abo-Elazm Mohamed A Edris Rabab Maher Ahmed Abdelhalim Muhammad Mostafa Abdel Ghaffar Dalia A Omran Hend Ibrahim Shousha | 2021 | World Journal of Gastroenterology2021,27,42: | 2 |
| 2 | Vertically aligned one-dimensional ZnO/V2O5 core-shell hetero-nanostructure for photoelectrochemical water splitting显示文摘The vertically aligned one-dimensional(1 D)core-shell structure can maximize the exposure and use of the functionally active surface while maintaining the geometric effects caused by the underlying structure.Herein,we have fabricated 1 D vertically aligned ZnO/V2O5 core-shell hetero-nanostructure nanorod arrays(NRs)for photoelectrochemical(PEC)water splitting.ZnO/V2O5 NRs were prepared through the hydrothermal growing of ZnO NRs and then radio frequency(RF)magnetron sputtering deposition of V2O5 for 300,600 and 900 s.The photocurrent density of ZnO/V2O5-based photoanodes was gradually increased with the sputtering time,reaching the maximum value of 1.21 m A/cm^2 at 1.23 V vs.reversible hydrogen electrode(RHE)for ZnO/V2O5-600,whereas for pure ZnO-based photoanode was 0.42 mA/cm^2.The incident photon to electron conversion efficiency(IPCE)of ZnO/V2O5-600 evaluated to be 82.3%which was 2.3 times higher than that of ZnO(36.4%).The improved PEC performance of ZnO/V2O5-600 is because the core-shell structure with a moderate thickness of the V2O5 layer has the extremely high carrier density,largest electrochemically active surface area(ECSA),largest carrier density,lowest charge recombination rate,and the longest lifetime of e-h pairs due to the formation of the staggered gap junction.This study provides an effective way to design and fabrication of hetero-nanostructures for highefficiency photoelectrodes. | Tian-Feng Hou Muhammad Ali Johar Ramireddy Boppella Mostafa Afifi Hassan Swati J.Patil Sang-Wan Ryu Dong-Weon Lee | 2020 | Journal of Energy Chemistry2020,29,10: | 1 |

| 4 | Latent tuberculosis infection among medical students in Malaysia显示文摘Objective: This study aimed to determine prevalence of latent tuberculosis infection among medical students and tuberculosis exposure at the health facilities. Methods: A cross-section of study year 1(n=68) and year 5(n=75) medical students in a local university were recruited for latent tuberculosis infection testing using QuantiFERON-TB Gold Plus and a questionnaire analyzed for multivariate risk. Results: The majority of the study were vaccinated with BCG. None of year 1 medical students were positive for latent tuberculosis infection, however, six(8.0%) year 5 students were tested positive for latent tuberculosis infection. A higher incidence of year 5 medical students claimed to be exposed to tuberculosis at health facility(65.3% vs. 4.4%) and a higher percentage reported contact with tuberculosis case over the preceding year compared to year 1 students(30.7% vs. 8.8%). Conclusion: We observed a higher incidence of latent tuberculosis infection and higher exposure to tuberculosis in health facilities among year 5 medical students. | 5 | Morpholine hydrazone scaffold: Synthesis, anticancer activity and docking studies显示文摘In this paper, synthesis and anticancer activities of morpholine hydrazones scaffold(1-17) thoroughly studied. Small series of morpholine hydrazones synthesized by treating 5-morpholinothiophene-2-carbaldehyde with different aryl hydrazides to form morpholine hydrazones scaffold(1-17). The in vitro anticancer potential of all these compounds was checked against human cancer cell lines like Hep G2(human hepatocellular liver carcinoma) and MCF-7(human breast adenocarcinoma). Analogs 13 had similar substantial cytotoxic effects towards Hep G2 with IC_(50) value 6.31±1.03μmmol/L when compared with the standard Doxorubicin(IC_(50)value 6.00±0.80μmmol/L); while compounds 5,8 and 9 showed potent cytotoxicity against MCF-7 with IC_(50) value 7.08±0.42μmmol/L, 1.26±0.34μmmol/L and11.22±0.22μmmol/L respectively when compared with the standard Tamoxifen(IC_(50)= 11.00±0.40μmol/L).
