1Peripheral corticotropin releasing hormone mediates post-inflammatory visceral hypersensitivity in rats显示文摘AIM:To investigate whether peripheral corticotropin releasing hormone (CRH), which is up-regulated in intestinal inflammation, mediates the post-inflammatory visceral hypersensitivity in a rat model of colitis. METHODS:We measured mucosal myeloperoxidase (MPO) activity as a marker of inflammation, plasma CRH level, and abdominal withdrawal reflex (AWR) to colorectal distension as a visceral nociceptive response at 2, 7 and 14 d after the induction of colitis with 4% acetic acid. RESULTS:Colonic inflammation, quantified by MPO activity, significantly increased on d 2 and subsided thereafter, which indicated a resolution of inflammation within 7 d. On the contrary, plasma CRH level and AWR score were increased on d 2, remained high on d 7, and returned to control level on d 14. Intraperitoneal injection of a CRH antagonist, astressin (30 μg/kg), significantly attenuated the post-inflammatory visceral hypersensitivity on d 7. Furthermore, intraperitoneal administration of CRH (3 and 10 μg/kg) mimicked the post-inflammatory visceral hypersensitivity in naive rats. 2Addition of cerium and yttrium to ferritic steel weld metal to improve hydrogen trapping efficiency显示文摘The applicability of Ce and Y as promising candidate elements to form irreversible traps in weld metal was investigated by thermal desorption spectroscopy(TDS) with gas chromatography(GC). The precise nature of the precipitate particles newly formed in the weld metal by the addition of Ce and Y to a certain alloy system was characterized. Moreover,the hydrogen trapping efficiency expressed as the reduction of the diffusible hydrogen in the weld metal was analyzed. The results showed that the addition of Ce and/or Y to this alloy system led to the formation of a mixed type of(Ce,Ti)-based oxide,(Y,Ni)-based carbide,or(Ce,Y,Ti)-based oxide particles. 3Correlation of fatty liver and abdominal fat distribution using a simple fat computed tomography protocol显示文摘AIM: To evaluate the relationship between hepatic fat infiltration and abdominal fat volume by using computed tomography (CT).METHODS: Three hundred and six patients who visited our obesity clinic between November 2007 and April 2008 underwent fat protocol CT scans.The age range of the patients was 19 to 79 years and the mean age was 49 years.The male to female ratio was 116:190.Liver and spleen attenuation measurements were taken with three regions of interests (ROIs) from the liver and two ROIs from the spleen.Hepatic attenuation indices (HAIs) were measured as follows: (1) hepatic parenchymal attenuation (CTLP);(2) liver to spleen attenuation ratio (LS ratio);and (3) difference between hepatic and splenic attenuation (LSdif).Abdominal fat volume was measured using a 3 mm slice CT scan starting at the level of the umbilicus and was automatically calculated by a workstation.Abdominal fat was classified into total fat (TF),visceral fat (VF),and subcutaneous fat (SF).We used a bivariate correlation method to assess the relationship between the three HAIs and TF,VF,and SF.RESULTS: There were significant negative correlations between CTLP,LS ratio,and LSdif with TF,VF,and SF,respectively.The CTLP showed a strong negative correlation with TF and VF (r = -0.415 and -0.434,respectively,P < 0.001).The correlation between CTLP and SF was less significant (r = -0.313,P < 0.001).CONCLUSION: Fatty infiltration of the liver was correlated with amount of abdominal fat and VF was more strongly associated with fatty liver than SF.Seonah Jang Chang Hee Lee Kyung Mook Choi Jongmee Lee Jae Woong Choi Kyeong Ah Kim Cheol Min Park 2011World Journal of Gastroenterology2011,17,28:5

5Adipokines as a novel link between obesity and atherosclerosis显示文摘The traditional perception of adipose tissue as a storage organ of fatty acids has been replaced by the notion that adipose tissue is an active endocrine organ, releasing various adipokines that are involved in the pathogenesis of obesity-related metabolic disturbances. Obesity is a well-known risk factor for atherosclerosis, and accelerates atherosclerosis by many mechanisms such as increase in blood pressure and glucose level, abnormal lipid profiles, and systemic inflammation. Furthermore, growing evidence suggests that some adipokines directly mediate the process of atherosclerosis by influencing the function of endothelial cells, arterial smooth muscle cells, and macrophages in vessel walls. In obese patients, the secretion and coordination of such adipokines is abnormal, and the secretion of specific adipokines increases or decreases. 6Room-temperature sputtered electrocatalyst WSe2 nanomaterials for hydrogen evolution reaction显示文摘The low-temperature physical vapor deposition process of atomically thin two-dimensional transition metal dichalcogenide(2D TMD) has been gaining attention owing to the cost-effective production of diverse electrochemical catalysts for hydrogen evolution reaction(HER) applications. We, herein, propose a simple route toward the cost-effective physical vapor deposition process of 2D WSe2 layered nanofilms as HER electrochemical catalysts using RF magnetron sputtering at room temperature(<27℃). By controlling the variable sputtering parameters, such as RF power and deposition time, the loading amount and electrochemical surface area(ECSA) of WSe2 films deposited on carbon paper can be carefully determined. The surface of the sputtered WSe2 films are partially oxidized, which may cause spherical-shaped particles. Regardless of the loading amount of WSe2, Tafel slopes of WSe2 electrodes in the HER test are narrowly distributed to be ~120–138 mV dec-1, which indicates the excellent reproducibility of intrinsic catalytic activity. By considering the trade-off between the loading amount and ECSA, the best HER performance is clearly observed in the 200 W-15 min sample with an overpotential of 220 mV at a current density of 10 mA cm-2. 7High-frequency magnetic stimulation attenuates beta-amyloid protein 1-42 neurotoxicity in organotypic hippocampal slices显示文摘Repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) has been utilized as a therapeutic tool for neurodegenerative disorders including Alzheimer’s disease.However,the precise mechanisms of its clinical effects remain unknown.β-amyloid (Aβ) exhibits direct neurotoxic effects and is closely related to neuronal degeneration in Alzheimer’s disease.Therefore,it has been hypothesized that the neuroprotective effects of rTMS are related to the mechanisms of protection against Aβ neurotoxicity.Organotypic hippocampal slices were prepared from 8-day old,Sprague Dawley rats.The tissue slices were exposed to 100 μmol/L Aβ1-42 since day 12 in vitro with and without high-frequency (20 Hz) magnetic stimulation.Magnetic stimulation efficacy was evaluated by measuring neuronal nuclei (NeuN) protein expression and by observing cultures following propidium iodide fluorescence staining and bromodeoxyuridine (BrdU) immunohistochemistry.Lactate dehydrogenase activity was detected in the culture media to evaluate hippocampal neuronal damage.Our results demonstrated that high-frequency magnetic stimulation significantly reversed the reduction of NeuN protein expression because of Aβ1-42 exposure (P < 0.05) and significantly reduced the number of damaged cells in the hippocampal slices (P < 0.05).However,lactate dehydrogenase levels and anti-BrdU staining results did not reveal any statistical differences.These findings indicate that high-frequency magnetic stimulation might have protective effect on hippocampal neurons from Aβ1-42 neurotoxicity.Don-Kyu Kim Young Chul Yoon Soo Ahn Chae Kyung Mook Seo Tai Ryoon Han Si-Hyun Kang 2010Neural Regeneration Research2010,5,18:2

10Acquisition of pluripotency in the chick embryo occurs during intrauterine embryonic development via a unique transcriptional network显示文摘Background: Acquisition of pluripotency by transcriptional regulatory factors is an initial developmental event that is required for regulation of cell fate and lineage specification during early embryonic development. The evolutionarily conserved core transcriptional factors regulating the pluripotency network in fishes, amphibians, and mammals have been elucidated. There are also species-specific maternally inherited transcriptional factors and their intricate transcriptional networks important in the acquisition of pluripotency. In avian species, however, the core transcriptional network that governs the acquisition of pluripotency during early embryonic development is not well understood.Results: We found that chicken NANOG(c NANOG) was expressed in the stages between the pre-ovulatory follicle and oocyte and was continuously detected in Eyal-Giladi and Kochav stage I(EGK.I) to X. However, c POUV was not expressed during fol iculogenesis, but began to be detectable between EGK.V and VI. Unexpectedly, c SOX2 could not be detected during fol iculogenesis and intrauterine embryonic development. Instead of c SOX2, c SOX3 was maternally inherited and continuously expressed during chicken intrauterine development. In addition, we found that the pluripotency-related genes such as c ENS-1, c KIT, c LIN28 A, c MYC, c PRDM14, and c SALL4 began to be dramatical y upregulated between EGK.VI and VII.Conclusion: These results suggest that chickens have a unique pluripotent circuitry since maternally inherited c NANOG and c SOX3 may play an important role in the initial acquisition of pluripotency.
