Naturally Occurring Self-Reactive CD4^+CD25^+ Regulatory T Cells: Universal Immune Code显示文摘Naturally occurring thymus-arisen CD4+CD25+ regulatory T (Treg) cells are considered to play a central role in self-tolerance. Precise signals that promote the development of Treg cells remain elusive, but considerable evidence suggests that costimulatory molecules, cytokines, the nature of the TCR and the niche or the context in which the T cell encounters antigen in the thymus play important roles. Analysis of TCR from Treg cells has demonstrated that a large proportion of this population has a higher avidity to self-antigen in comparison with TCR from CD4+CD25- cells and that peripheral antigen is required for their development, maintenance, or expansion. Treg cells have been shown to undergo expansion in the periphery, likely regulated by the presence of self-antigen. Many studies have shown that the involvement of Treg cells in the tolerance induction is antigen-specific, even with MHC-mismatched, in transplantation/graft versus host disease (GVHD), autoimmunity, cancer, and pregnancy. Theses studies concluded a vital role for self-reactive Treg cells in maintenance of the body integrity. Based on those studies, we hypothesize that self-reactive Treg cells are shared among all healthy individuals and recognize same self-antigens and their TCR encodes for few dominant antigens of each organ which defines the healthy self. These dominant self antigens can be regarded as “universal immune code”.Nafiseh Pakravan Agheel Tabar Molla Hassan Zuhair Muhammad Hassan 2007Cellular & Molecular Immunology2007,4,3:6
Antioxidant compounds and minerals in tomatoes by Trichodermaenriched biofertilizer and their relationship with the soil environments显示文摘The experiment was conducted to evaluate the efficacy of Trichoderma-enriched biofertilizer(BioF/compost)on antioxidants and minerals in ripe tomatoes and soil health improvements in terms of nutrient availability and microbial populations. The study was comprised of six treatments:control(zero input);recommended doses of NPK(135.5,45.6 and 22.9 kg ha^(–1),respectively);100%BioF/compost;75%BioF/compost+25%N;50%BioF/compost+50%N;and 25%BioF/compost+75%N.The recommended doses of P and K were used in the last three treatments. It was found that the application of 100%BioF/compost enhanced plant growth, leaf greenness, and produced 12.9%higher yield compared to the recommended doses of NPK and other treatments.Mineral contents(P,K,Ca,Mg,Cu,Fe,Mn and Zn)in tomato roots, shoots and fruits and antioxidant compounds,i.e.,ascorbic acid,β-carotine,and lycopene were increased significantly in fruits fertilized with100%BioF/compost.The high efficiency of Trichoderma compost might be the result of its potential of nutrient solubilization and harboring soil microorganisms.Collectively,BioF/compost increased soil fertility and favored growth of microbes in the rhizosphere which ultimately contributed to higher yield, antioxidant, and mineral concentrations in tomatoes.Thus,Trichoderma-enriched biofertilizer may reduce application of chemical fertilizers and therefore, can be considered as a noble practice in sustainable agriculture.Yeakub Khan Manjurul Haque Abul Hossain Molla Mizanur Rahman Mohammad Zahangeer Alam 2017Journal of Integrative Agriculture2017,16,3:4
Interaction of cetyltrimethylammonium bromide with drug in aqueous/electrolyte solution:A combined conductometric and molecular dynamics method study显示文摘Interaction between beta-lactum antibiotic drug ciprofloxacin hydrochloride(CFH)and cationic surfactant cetyltrimethylammonium bromide(CTAB)was performed conductometrically in aqueous as well as in the occurrence of different salts(NaCl,KCl as well as NH_4Cl)over the temperature range of 298.15–323.15 K at the regular interval of 5 K.CFH drug has been suggested for the treatment of bacterial infections such as urinary tract infections and acute sinusitis.A clear critical micelle concentration(CMC)was obtained for pure CTAB as well as(CFH+CTAB)mixed systems. The decrease in CMC values of CTAB caused by the addition of CFH reveals the existence of the interaction between the components and therefore it is the indication of micelle formation at lower concentration of CTAB and their CMC values further decrease in attendance of salts.A nonlinear behavior in the CMC versus T plot was observed in all the cases. The ΔG_m^0 values are found to be negative in present study systems demonstrated the stability of the solution. The values of ΔH_m^0 and ΔS_m^0 reveal the existence of hydrophobic and electrostatic interactions between CFH and CTAB.The thermodynamic properties of transfer for the micellization were also evaluated and discussed in detail.Molecular dynamic simulation disclosed that environment of water and salts have impact on the hydrophobic interaction between CFH and CTAB.In water and salts,CTAB adopts spherical micelle in which charged hydrophilic groups are interacted with waters whereas hydrophobic tails form the core of the micelle. This hydrophobic core region is highly conserved and protected. In addition, micelle formation is more favorable in aqueous Na Cl solution than other solutions.Md.Anamul Hoque Md.Masud Alam Mohammad Robel Molla Shahed Rana Malik Abdul Rub Mohammad A.Halim Mohammed Abdullah Khan Farida Akhtar 2018Chinese Journal of Chemical Engineering2018,26,1:3
Stimuli-responsive polymeric materials for human health applications显示文摘Stimuli-responsive polymers have the extraordinary ability to change their physical and/or chemical state after they‘‘detect’’a change in their environment;their response depends dramatically on their chemical composition. This property has been used for a plethora of applications;this review highlights their utility for human health.Specifically, this review will highlight efforts in the areas of sensing and biosensing,antimicrobial/antifouling coatings, tissue engineering and regenerative medicine, and drug delivery.Specific examples are given in each of these areas, with some focus on our work engineering poly(Nisopropylacrylamide)-based microgels and other responsive systems.Molla R.Islam Yongfeng Gao Xue Li Qiang Matthew Zhang Menglian Wei Michael J.Serpe 2014Chinese Science Bulletin2014,59,32:3
Evaluation of fungal potentiality for bioconversion of domestic wastewater sludge显示文摘This study was undertaken to screen the filamentous fungi isolated from its relevant habitats(wastewater, sewage sludge and sludge cake) for the bioconversion of domestic wastewater sludge. A total of 35 fungal strains were tested against wastewater sludge (total suspended solids, TSS 1%—5% w/w) to evaluate its potentiality for enhancing the biodegradability and dewaterability using liquid state bioconversion(LSB) process. The strains were divided into five groups i.e. Penicillium, Aspergillus, Trichoderma, Basidiomycete and Miscellaneous, respectively. The strains WWZP1003, SCahmA103, SCahmT105 and PC-9 among their respective groups of Penicillium, Aspergillus, Trichoderma and Basidiomycete played potential roles in terms of separation(formation of pellets/flocs/filaments), biodegradation(removal of COD) and filtration(filterability) of treated domestic wastewater sludge. The Miscellaneous group was not considered due to its unsatisfactory results as compared to the other groups. The pH value was also influenced by the microbial treatment during fermentation process. The filterability of treated sludge was improved by fungal treatment, and lowest filtration time was recorded for the strain WWZP1003 and SCahmA103 of Penicillium and Aspergillus groups respectively compared with other strains.Zahangir Alam A. 6High-density linkage map construction and identification of loci regulating fruit quality traits in blueberry显示文摘Fruit quality traits play a significant role in consumer preferences and consumption in blueberry(Vaccinium corymbosum L).The objectives of this study were to construct a high-density linkage map and to identify the underlying genetic basis of fruit quality traits in blueberry.A total of 287 F_(1) individuals derived from a cross between two southern highbush blueberry cultivars,‘Reveille’and‘Arlen’,were phenotyped over three years(2016–2018)for fruit quality-related traits, including titratable acidity,pH,total soluble solids, and fruit weight.A high-density linkage map was constructed using 17k single nucleotide polymorphisms markers. The linkage map spanned a total of 1397 cM with an average inter-loci distance of 0.08 cM.The quantitative trait loci interval mapping based on the hidden Markov model identified 18 loci for fruit quality traits, including seven loci for fruit weight, three loci for titratable acidity, five loci for pH,and three loci for total soluble solids.Ten of these loci were detected in more than one year. These loci explained phenotypic variance ranging from 7 to 28% for titratable acidity and total soluble solid, and 8-13% for pH.However, the loci identified for fruit weight did not explain more than 10%of the phenotypic variance. We also reported the association between fruit quality traits and metabolites detected by Proton nuclear magnetic resonance analysis directly responsible for these fruit quality traits.Organic acids, citric acid, and quinic acid were significantly(P<0.05)and positively correlated with titratable acidity.Sugar molecules showed a strong and positive correlation with total soluble solids.Overall, the study dissected the genetic basis of fruit quality traits and established an association between these fruit quality traits and metabolites.Molla F.Mengist Hamed Bostan Elisheba Young Kristine L.Kay Nicholas Gillitt James Ballington Colin D.Kay Mario G.Ferruzzi Hamid Ashrafi Mary Ann Lila Massimo Iorizzo 2021Horticulture Research2021,8,1:2
Understanding the physiological functions of the host xenobiotic-sensing nuclear receptors PXR and CAR on the gut microbiome using genetically modified mice显示文摘Pharmacological activation of the xenobiotic-sensing nuclear receptors pregnane X receptor(PXR) and constitutive androstane receptor(CAR) is well-known to increase drug metabolism and reduce inflammation. Little is known regarding their physiological functions on the gut microbiome. In this study, we discovered bivalent hormetic functions of PXR/CAR modulating the richness of the gut microbiome using genetically engineered mice. The absence of PXR or CAR increased microbial richness, and absence of both receptors synergistically increased microbial richness. PXR and CAR deficiency increased the pro-inflammatory bacteria Helicobacteraceae and Helicobacter. Deficiency in both PXR and CAR increased the relative abundance of Lactobacillus, which has bile salt hydrolase activity, corresponding to decreased primary taurine-conjugated bile acids(BAs) in feces, which may lead to higher internal burden of taurine and unconjugated BAs, both of which are linked to inflammation, oxidative stress, and cytotoxicity. The basal effect of PXR/CAR on the gut microbiome was distinct from pharmacological and toxicological activation of these receptors. Common PXR/CAR-targeted bacteria were identified, the majority of which were suppressed by these receptors. h PXR-TG mice had a distinct microbial profile as compared to wild-type mice. This study is the first to unveil the basal functions of PXR and CAR on the gut microbiome.Mallory Little Moumita Dutta Hao Li Adam Matson Xiaojian Shi Gabby Mascarinas Bruk Molla Kris Weigel Haiwei Gu Sridhar Mani Julia Yue Cui 2022Acta Pharmaceutica Sinica B2022,12,2:2
Integrated Optimization of Smart Home Appliances with Cost-effective Energy Management System显示文摘Smart grid enables consumers to control and sched-ule the consumption pattern of their appliances, minimize energy cost,peak-to-average ratio(PAR)and peak load demand. In this paper,a general architecture of home energy management system(HEMS)is developed in smart grid scenario with novel restricted and multi-restricted scheduling method for the residen-tial customers. The optimization problem is developed under the time of use pricing(TOUP)scheme. To optimize the formulated problem,a powerful meta-heuristic algorithm called grey wolf optimizer(GWO)is utilized, which is compared with particle swarm optimization(PSO)algorithm to show its effectiveness.A rooftop photovoltaic(PV)system is integrated with the system to show the cost effectiveness of the appliances. For analysis, eight different cases are considered under various time scheduling algorithms.Tesfahun Molla Baseem Khan Bezabih Moges Hassan Haes Alhelou Reza Zamani Pierluigi Siano 2019CSEE Journal of Power and Energy Systems2019,5,2:2
An update to monoclonal antibody as therapeutic option against COVID-19显示文摘With the number of Coronavirus Disease 2019(COVID-19)cases soaring worldwide and limited vaccine availability for the general population in most countries, the monoclonal antibody(mAb)remains a viable therapeutic option to treat COVID-19 disease and its complications, especially in the elderly individuals.More than 50 monoclonal antibody-related clinical trials are being conducted in different countries around the world, with few of them nearing the completion of the third and fourth phase clinical trial. In view of recent emergency use authorization(EUA)from the FDA(Food and Drug Administration)of casirivimab and imdevimab,it is of importance thatmAbs,already used to treat diseases such as Ebola and respiratory syncytial virus(RSV)infection, are discussed in scientific communities. This brief review discusses the mechanism of action and updates to clinical trials of different monoclonal antibodies used to treat COVID-19,with special attention paid to SARS-CoV-2 immune response in host cells, target viral structures, and justification of developing mAbs following the approval and administration of potential effective vaccine among vulnerable populations in different countries.Paroma Deb Md.Maruf Ahmed Molla K.M.Saif-Ur-Rahman 2021Biosafety and Health2021,3,2:2
Effects of Feces on Spatial Distribution Patterns of Grazed Grassland Communities显示文摘Animals excrete feces during grazing. The uneven distribution of feces causes a spatial heterogeneity in grassland communities. In this study,we attempted to clarify the effects of feces on spatial distribution patterns of plant species.A field study was conducted on four grasslands each grazed by a single cow. These four grasslands were defined as Poa pratensis(Kentucky bluegrass) dominated grassland without feces(PoF-),Poa pratensis dominated grassland with feces(PoF+),Zoysia japonica Steud.(Japanese lawngrass) dominated grassland without feces(ZyF-),and Zoysia japonica Steud.dominated grassland with feces(ZyF+).A 50 m line that transects 100 equally spaced quadrats(L-quadrats) was drawn on each of the four grasslands. Each quadrat was 0.50 m × 0.50 m in size and consisted of four equal-area cells of 0.25 m × 0.25 m(S-quadrats).The occurrences of all plant species were recorded in each S-quadrat.The binomial distribution(BD) and beta-binomial distribution(BBD) were used to represent the variation in spatial patterns. The BBD provided a significant description of the frequency distribution of plants per quadrat.A power law was used to calculate the spatial heterogeneity of each species together with the community heterogeneity. The results revealed that the plants on each of the four grasslands were aggregatively distributed. The ZyF+ exhibited greater spatial heterogeneity than the ZyF-due to the uneven deposition of feces by cows grazing on the grasslands.Additionally we also found that the feces had effect on the heterogeneity inZyF+ and did not have effect in PoF+.Tamanna Islam Eiki Fukuda Masae Shiyomi Molla Rahman Shaibur Shigenao Kawai Mikinori Tsuiki 2010Agricultural Sciences in China2010,9,1:2
