1Alzheimer’s disease and type 2 diabetes mellitus:Pathophysiologic and pharmacotherapeutics links显示文摘At present,Alzheimer’s disease(AD)and type 2 diabetes mellitus(T2DM)are two highly prevalent disorders worldwide,especially among elderly individuals.T2DM appears to be associated with cognitive dysfunction,with a higher risk of developing neurocognitive disorders,including AD.These diseases have been observed to share various pathophysiological mechanisms,including alterations in insulin signaling,defects in glucose transporters(GLUTs),and mitochondrial dysfunctions in the brain.Therefore,the aim of this review is to summarize the current knowledge regarding the molecular mechanisms implicated in the association of these pathologies as well as recent therapeutic alternatives.In this context,the hyperphosphorylation of tau and the formation of neurofibrillary tangles have been associated with the dysfunction of the phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase and mitogen-activated protein kinase pathways in the nervous tissues as well as the decrease in the expression of GLUT-1 and GLUT-3 in the different areas of the brain,increase in reactive oxygen species,and production of mitochondrial alterations that occur in T2DM.These findings have contributed to the implementation of overlapping pharmacological interventions based on the use of insulin and antidiabetic drugs,or,more recently,azeliragon,amylin,among others,which have shown possible beneficial effects in diabetic patients diagnosed with AD.Milagros Rojas Mervin Chávez-Castillo Jordan Bautista Ángel Ortega Manuel Nava Juan Salazar Edgar Díaz-Camargo Oscar Medina Joselyn Rojas-Quintero Valmore Bermúdez 2021World Journal of Diabetes2021,12,6:5
2Review of imaging and endovascular intervention of iliocaval venous compression syndrome显示文摘Iliocaval venous compression syndrome(ICS)is the extrinsic compression of the common iliac vein by the overlying iliac artery against the vertebra.Chronic compression can lead to venous stenosis and stasis,which manifests as chronic venous disease and treatment resistance.Therefore,early recognition of ICS and prompt treatment are essential.Clinical presentations of ICS can be ambiguous and diagnosis requires a high index of suspicion with the relevant imaging studies.The initial imaging test is typically a Duplex ultrasound for vessel assessment and pelvic ultrasound to exclude a compressive mass,which is followed by computed tomography(CT)or magnetic resonance(MR)venography.CT and MRI can identify the anatomical causes for venous compression.In patients with high clinical suspicion for ICS,negative findings on CT and MR venography would still warrant further investigations.Definitive diagnosis can be established using catheter-based venography complemented with intravascular ultrasonography but the nature of their invasiveness limits its utility as a routine imaging modality.In this review paper,we will discuss the evidence,utility and limitations of the existing imaging modalities and endovascular intervention used in the management of ICS.Ming Ren Toh Tjun Yip Tang Han Hui Mervin Nathan Lim Nanda Venkatanarasimha Karthikeyan Damodharan 2020World Journal of Radiology2020,12,3:4
3Atomically phase-matched second-harmonic generation in a 2D crystal显示文摘Second-harmonic generation(SHG)has found extensive applications from hand-held laser pointers to spectroscopic and microscopic techniques.Recently,some cleavable van der Waals(vdW)crystals have shown SHG arising from a single atomic layer,where the SH light elucidated important information such as the grain boundaries and electronic structure in these ultra-thin materials.However,despite the inversion asymmetry of the single layer,the typical crystal stacking restores inversion symmetry for even numbers of layers leading to an oscillatory SH response,drastically reducing the applicability of vdW crystals such as molybdenum disulfide(MoS_(2)).Here,we probe the SHG generated from the noncentrosymmetric 3R crystal phase of MoS_(2).We experimentally observed quadratic dependence of second-harmonic intensity on layer number as a result of atomically phase-matched nonlinear dipoles in layers of the 3R crystal that constructively interfere.By studying the layer evolution of the A and B excitonic transitions in 3R-MoS_(2) using SHG spectroscopy,we also found distinct electronic structure differences arising from the crystal structure and the dramatic effect of symmetry and layer stacking on the nonlinear properties of these atomic crystals.The constructive nature of the SHG in this 2D crystal provides a platform to reliably develop atomically flat and controllably thin nonlinear media.Mervin Zhao Ziliang Ye Ryuji Suzuki Yu Ye Hanyu Zhu Jun Xiao Yuan Wang Yoshihiro Iwasa Xiang Zhang 2016Light(Science & Applications)2016,5,1:2
