1Matrix metalloproteinase-2 and tissue inhibitor of metallo-proteinase-2 in colorectal carcinoma invasion and metastasis显示文摘AIM: To explore the relationship between matrix metalloProteinase-2 (MMP-2) and tissue inhibitor of metalloproteinase-2 (TTMP-2) in the development of colorectal carcinoma and to provide a valuable marker for clinical diagnosis.METHODS: Twenty-five patients with colorectal carcinoma underwent surgical resection. Samples were taken from tumor sites and normal tissues. MMP-2 activity was determined by gelatin zymography. Western blot and ABC immunohist ochemical staining were used to detect the expression levels of MMP-2 and TIMP-2 in normal and colorectal carcinoma tissues. Statistical analyses were performed using the Student's ttest and one-way ANOVA. P<0.05 was considered statistically .significant. All the statistical analyses were performed using SPSS 10.0software. RESULTS: MMP-2 activity could be detected in both normal and colorectal carcinoma tissues. MMP-2 actMty in colorectal carcinoma tissues was much higher than that in normal tissues (P<0.05, t =3.916, 4.227). MMP-2 adivity was positively related to the colorectal carcinoma invasion depth, lymph node metastasis and Duke's stage. Western blot and ABC immunohistochemical staining demonstrated that the expression level of MMP-2 in colorectal carcinoma tissues was much higher than that in normal tissues (P<0.05, t = 9.429), but the expression level of TIMP-2 in colorectal carcinoma tissues was much lower than that in normal tissues (P<0.05, t = 7.329). The MMP-2/TIMP-2 ratio of colorectal carcinoma was much higher than that of normal tissues. With the progression of invasion depth, lymph node metastasis and tumor Duke's stage, the activity and expression level of MMP-2 and TIMP-2 gradually increased, but the MMP-2/TIMP-2 ratio gradually decreased. 4A reusable PMMA/paper hybrid plug-and-play microfluidic device for an ultrasensitive immunoassay with a wide dynamic range显示文摘Conventional colorimetric enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay(ELISA)is a time-consuming laboratory assay that is not very sensitive and consumes a large amount of samples.Herein,the development of a reusable,cost-effective,and eco-friendly poly(methyl methacrylate)(PMMA)/paper hybrid plug-and-play(PnP)device for high-sensitivity immunoassay by analyte enrichment and efficient passing-through washing has been reported.The PMMA device has multiple slots where a pre-patterned paper substrate can be inserted.The sample flows back-and-forth through a low-cost,3D paper substrate within the PMMA channels,thereby enhancing the amount of analyte adsorbed and dramatically increasing the sensitivity while decreasing the assay time.After the enrichment assay,the paper substrate can simply be pulled out of the device,and the results can be qualitatively viewed with the naked eye or scanned through a simple desktop scanner for quantitative analysis.The paper substrate can be replaced with a new substrate so that the device can be reused.The limits of detection(LODs)of 200pg/mL for immunoglobulin G(IgG)and 270 pg/mL for hepatitis B surface antigen(HBsAg)were obtained.This IgG assay is at least 10 times more sensitive than commercial ELISA kits.In addition,the PnP ELISA exhibited a significant increase in the linear dynamic range from 3 orders of magnitude in a common paper-based device to a wide range of six orders of magnitude in the PnP hybrid device.This reusable PnP device has great potential for the low-cost yet high-sensitivity detection of infectious diseases,cancers,and other important biomolecules.Sharma T.Sanjay Meihan Li Wan Zhou Xiaochun Li XiuJun Li 2020Microsystems & Nanoengineering2020,6,1:2

8The impact of energy-intensive industries on air quality in China’s industrial agglomerations显示文摘Understanding the driving forces of regional air pollution and its mechanism has gained much attention in academic research,which can provide scientific policy-making basis for economy-environment sustainability in China.Being an important energy and industrial base,the North China Plain region has been experiencing severe air pollution.Therefore,understanding the relationship between industrialization and air quality in this region is of great importance for air quality improvement.In this study,the average annual concentrations of SO2,NO2 and PM10 in 47 sample cities at and above the prefecture level in the North China Plain region from 2007 to 2016 were used to illustrate the spatiotemporal characteristics of air pollution within this region.Furthermore,panel data model,panel vector autoregression model,and impulse response function were used to explore the correlation and driving mechanism between energy-intensive industries and regional air quality.The results show that:first,overall air quality improved in the study area between 2007 and 2016,with a significant greater fall in concentration of SO2 than that of NO2 and PM10;second,provincial border areas suffered from severe air pollution and showed an apparent spatial agglomeration trend of pollution;and third,the test results from different models all proved that energy-intensive industries such as the chemical,non-metallic mineral production,electric and thermal power production and supply industries,had a significant positive correlation with concentrations of air pollutants,and indicated an obvious short-term impulse response effect.It concludes that upgradation of industrial structure,especially that of energy-intensive industries,plays a very important role in the improvement of regional air quality,which is recommended to be put in top priority for authorities.Therefore,policies as increasing investments in technological innovation in energy-intensive industries,deepening cooperation in environmental governance between different provinces and cities,and strengthening supervision and entry restrictions are suggested.ZHANG Xiaoping LIN Meihan WANG Zhenbo JIN Fengjun 2021Journal of Geographical Sciences2021,31,4:1
9Fabrication and evaluation of an optimized xenogenic decellularized costal cartilage graft:preclinical studies of a novel biocompatible prosthesis for rhinoplasty显示文摘On account of the poor biocompatibility of synthetic prosthesis,millions of rhinoplasty recipients have been forced to choose autologous costal cartilage as grafts,which suffer from limited availability,morbidity at the donor site and prolonged operation time.Here,as a promising alternative to autologous costal cartilage,we developed a novel xenogeneic costal cartilage and explored its feasibility as a rhinoplasty graft for the first time.Adopting an improved decellularization protocol,in which the ionic detergent was substituted by trypsin,the resulting decellularized graft was confirmed to preserve more structural components and better mechanics,and eliminate cellular components effectively.The in vitro and in vivo compatibility experiments demonstrated that the decellularized graft showed excellent biocompatibility and biosecurity.Additionally,the functionality assessment of rhinoplasty was performed in a rabbit model,and the condition of grafts after implantation was comprehensively evaluated.The optimized graft exhibited better capacity to reduce the degradation rate and maintain the morphology,in comparison to the decellularized costal cartilage prepared by conventional protocol.These findings indicate that this optimized graft derived from decellularized xenogeneic costal cartilage provides a new prospective for future investigations of rhinoplasty prosthesis and has great potential for clinical application.Shuang Lin Yuanjia He Meihan Tao Aijun Wang Qiang Ao 2021Regenerative Biomaterials2021,8,6:1

12Scaly-sided Merganser(Mergus squamatus)equalizes foraging costs with depth by switching foraging tactics显示文摘Throughout evolutionary history,animals are finely tuned to adjust their behaviors corresponding to environmental variations.Behavioral flexibility represents an important component of a species'adaptive capacity in the face of rapid anthropogenetic environmental change,and knowledge of animal behaviors is increasingly recognized in conservation biology.In aquatic ecosystem,variation of water depth is a key factor affecting the availability of food;thus,the foraging behaviors of many waterbirds,especially piscivores.In this study,we compared the foraging behaviors of the Scaly-sided Merganser(Mergus squamatus),an endangered migratory diving duck endemic to East Asia,in habitats with different water depths(Shallow waters:0–40 cm;Deep waters:40–300 cm),using video camera records obtained from the known wintering sites during three winters from 2018 to 2020.Further,the energy expenditure of foraging behavior profile and energy intake based on fish sizes were calculated to study the foraging energetics.In total,200 effective video footages that contained 1086 min with 17,995 behaviors and 163 events of catching fish were recorded.Results showed that:1)time length for fishing(including eye-submerging,head-dipping,diving and food handling)of M.squamatus in shallow waters was significantly more than in deep waters;2)M.squamatuss spent significantly more time for preparing(including vigilance,preening and swimming)in deep waters than in shallow waters;3)the mean catch rate was 0.28 fish/min in shallow waters,which is significantly higher than the value of 0.13 fish/min in deep waters;4)despite the distinct foraging behavior profiles and energy intakes,M.squamatus showed similar energetics in shallow and deep waters.We concluded that M.squamatus is a good example of behavioral flexibility that aligns with expectations of optimal foraging theory,in that it behaves in accordance to resource availability in different environments,resulting in high foraging efficiency.Peizhong Liu Meihan Liu Dongyang Xiao Ying He Rong Fan Cai Lu Li Wen Qing Zeng Guangchun Lei 2023Avian Research2023,14,4:0
13Source and yearly distribution of PAHs in the snow from the Hailuogou glacier of Mountain Gongga, China显示文摘Snow samples were collected over a 3-year period from 2012 to 2014 at the Hailuogou glacier of Mountain Gongga(Mt. Gongga) and analyzed for 16 priority polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons(PAHs) using Gas Chromatography–Mass Spectrometry(GC–MS). The results show that total average levels of the 16 PAHs ranged from 452 to 290 ng·L^(-1) with a possible declining trend from 2012 to 2014. Distances between the sampling sites and the emission sources were estimated at typically less than 500 km. The results suggest that the major source of PAHs was from coal combustion, while contributions from automobile exhaust played an important role in more recent years. 14Identification and Characterization of Long Non-Coding RNAs Involved in Sex-Related Gene Regulation in Kelp Saccharina japonica显示文摘Long non-coding RNAs(lncRNAs)regulate a variety of biological processes,including sexual reproduction and differentiation.Saccharina japonica,a commercially important brown alga in China,shows remarkable sexual dimorphism in haploid gametophytes.The sex of Saccharina japonica gametophytes is determined by UV sexual system.However,no results have been reported on the lncRNAs involved in the sex-related gene regulation of S.japonica.This study identified a number of lncRNAs and assessed their expression levels in male and female gametophytes.Among them,a total of 405 lncRNAs and 211 mRNAs showed differential expressions.Furthermore,the functions of target genes of differentially expressed lncRNAs(DELs)differed from those of differentially expressed genes(DEGs),suggesting that lncRNA may interact with other functional proteins,in addition to DEGs,to involve sex regulation in S.japonica.There were 32 and 90 potential cis-regulatory and trans-regulatory interactions between DELsDEGs,respectively.Five of these lncRNAs(LNC_002974,LNC_021059,LNC_038466,LNC_051584,and LNC_027400)interacted with putative male sex determination region(SDR)genes,suggesting that they act as regulators in gametophytes'sex regulation potentially.Findings from this study contribute to our understanding of the roles of lncRNAs in sex differentiation and lay the foundation for functional studies of candidate lncRNAs in the future.BAI Meihan YUE Shutao WANG Weiwei DU Xinxin LI Xiaojie YANG Guanpin ZHANG Linan 2023Journal of Ocean University of China2023,22,3:0
15The suitability assessment on site selection for bottom seeding scallop culture based on analytic hierarchy process显示文摘Scallop culture is an important way of bottom-seeding marine ranching,which is of great significance to improve the current situation of fishery resources.However,there are some problems in site-selection evaluation of marine ranching,such as imperfect criteria system,complex structure,untargeted criteria quantification,etc.In addition,no site-selection evaluation method of bottom-seeding culture areas for scallops is available.Therefore,we established a hierarchy structure model according to the analytic hierarchy process(AHP)theory,in which social,physical,chemical,and biological environments are used as main criteria,and marine functional zonation,water depth,current,water temperature,salinity,substrate type,water quality,sediment quality,red tide,phytoplankton,and zooplankton are used as sub-criteria,on which a multi-parameter evaluation system is set up.Meanwhile,the dualism method,assignment method,and membership function method were used to quantify sub-criteria,and a quantitative evaluation for the entire criteria was added,including the evaluation and analysis of two types of unsuitable environmental situations.By overall consideration in scallop yield,quality,and marine ranching construction objectives,the weight of the main criteria could be determined.Five grades in the suitability corresponding to the evaluation result were divided,and the Python language was used to create an evaluation system for efficient calculation and intuitive presentation of the evaluation outcome.Eight marine cases were simulated based on existing survey data,and the results prove that the method is feasible for evaluating and analyzing the site selection of bottom-seeding culture areas for scallops under various environmental situations.The proposed evaluation method can be promoted for the site selection of bottom-seeding marine ranching.This study provided theoretical and methodological references for the site selection evaluation of other types of marine ranching.Ziniu ZHANG Zhenyan WANG Guihua LI Meihan ZHAO Wenjian LI 2024Journal of Oceanology and Limnology2024,42,2:0
