The pathway of the interdecadal variability in the Pacific Ocean显示文摘Cases of the interdecadal variability in the Pacific Ocean and their evolution were examined in the paper with the statistic methods (CEOF and composite analysis) over the period of 1950-1993. Observations of oceanic temperatures in the upper 400 m revealed an obvious region of the interdecadal signals in the central North Pacific. Such signals propagated south westward, then subducted to the subtropics. The hypothesized link for interdecadal oceanic variability between the subtropics and the tropics, especially with the western tropical Pacific was unraveled in order to detect the cause of decadal signals in the tropics. The thermal anomalies subducted in the central North Pacific east to the dateline only reach 18°N. There has been no further southward propagation since then due to a certain barrier. The origin of the interdecadal signals in the western tropical Pacific was traced to the southern tropical Pacific. There is a meridional pathway around the dateline where the signals were loaded. | WANG Dongxiao & LIU Zhengyu1. | 2 | Direct evidence of transformation from smectite to palygorskite:TEM investigation显示文摘Palygorskite clays sampled from palygorskite clay deposits in Jiangsu and Anhui provinces were investigated by transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Many intergrowth phenomena of special ultra-microstructure between smectite and palygorskite were found. The ultra-microstructure indicates that palygorsite fiberrous crystals grow along (001) of primary smectite through structural transformation and decomposition of the primary smectite. According to field investigation and X-ray diffraction (XRD) analyses, the transformation mechanism and process can be described as: formation of smectite from basalt weathering deposited in localiza- tion basin; evaporation of lake water in aridity environment causing pH increase and concentra- tion of magnesium ion in interstice water of sediment smectite in the lake basin. Under alkaline conditions, magnesium ion occupied interlayer positions of the smectite. Because of the misfit between magnesium octahedral sheet and smectite layer, magnesium ion interaction with smec- tite layers caused the smectite to transform into palygorskite, and resulted in the formation of smectite and palygorskite complex particulates, and even smaller secondary smectite crystal plates. The transformation of smectite structure resulted in the formation of nanometer minerals with large specific surface area and excellent property of physics and chemistry in smec- tite-palygorskite mixing clay. The results from TEM investigation are important for understanding properties of palygorskite clay and application. | CHEN Tianhu1,,XU Huifang2,LU Anhuai3,XU Xiaochun1,PENG Shuchuan1 2 &YUE Shucang1 1.College of Resources and Environmental Engineering,Hefei University of Technology,Hefei 230009,China 2.Department of Geology and Geophysics,University of Wisconsin,Madison,WI53706,USA 3.Department of Geology,Peking University,Beijing 100871,China Correspondence should be addressed to Chen Tianhu(email: tianhu@mail.hf.ah.cn or cth168@hotmail.com) | 2004 | Science China Earth Sciences2004,47,11: | 16

Understanding the effects of radiative preheat and self-emission from shock heating on equation of state measurement at 100s of Mbar using spherically converging shock waves in a NIF hohlraum显示文摘Over the last six years many experiments have been done at the National Ignition Facility to measure the Hugoniot of materials, such asCHplastic at extreme pressures,up to 800 Mbar. The“Gbar”design employs a strong spherically converging shock launched through a solid ball of material using a hohlraum radiation drive. The shock front conditions are characterized using x-ray radiography. In this paper we examine the role of radiation in heating the unshocked material in front of the shock to understand the impact it has on equation of state measurements and how it drives the measured data off the theoretical Hugoniot curve. In particular, the two main sources of radiation heating are the preheating of the unshocked material by the high-energy kilo-electron-volt x-rays in the hohlraum and the heating of the material in front of the shock,as the shocked material becomes hot enough to radiate significantly.Using our model,we estimate that preheating can reach 4 eV in unshocked material, and that radiation heating can begin to drive data off the Hugoniot significantly,as pressures reach above 400 Mb. | Joseph Nilsen Andrea L.Kritcher Madison EMartin Robert E.Tipton Heather D.Whitley Damian C.Swift Tilo Doppner Benjamin L.Bachmann Amy E.Lazicki Natalie B.Kostinski Brian R.Maddox Gilbert W.Collins Siegfried H.Glenzer Roger W.Falcone | 2020 | Matter and Radiation at Extremes2020,5,1: | 5
Fever as the only manifestation of hypersensitivity reactions associated with oxaliplatin in a patient with colorectal cancer Oxaliplatin-induced hypersensitivity reaction显示文摘Hypersensitivity reactions (HSR) to oxaliplatin in patients with colorectal cancer include facial ushing, erythema, pruritis, fever, tachycardia, dyspnea, tongue swelling, rash/hives, headache, chills, weakness, vomiting, burning sensations, dizziness, and edema. We report a patient with fever as the sole manifestation of initial HSR, review the literature and discuss the management of HSR. A 57-year-old female with T3N2M0 rectal adenocarcinoma received modified FOLFOX-6. She tolerated the first 8 cycles without any toxicities except grade 1 peripheral neuropathy and nausea. During 9th and 10th infusions, she developed fever to a maximum of 38.3℃ with stable hemodynamic status despite medications. During 11th infusion, she developed grade 3 HSR consisting of symptomatic bronchospasm, hypotension, nausea, vomiting, cough, and fever. On examination, she was pale, cyanotic, with a temperature of 38.8℃, BP dropped to 95/43 mm Hg, pulse of 116/min and O2 saturation of 88%-91%. She was hospitalized for management and recovered in 24 h. Fever alone is not a usual symptom of oxaliplatin HSR. It may be indicative that the patient may develop serious reactions subsequently, as did our patient who developed hypotension with the third challenge. Treatment and prevention consists of slowing the infusion rate, use of steroids and antagonists of Type 1 and 2 histamine receptor antagonists, whereas desensitization could help to provide the small number of patients who experience severe HSR with the ability to further receive an effective therapy for their colorectal cancer. | M Wasif Saif Shailja Roy Leslie Ledbetter Jennifer Madison Kostas Syrigos | 2007 | World Journal of Gastroenterology2007,13,39: | 4
Alzheimer's disease: the silver tsunami of the 21^(st) century显示文摘Alzheimer's disease(AD), a fatal progressive neurodegenerative disorder, has no cure to date. One of the causes of AD is the accumulation of amyloid-beta 42(Aβ42) plaques, which result in the onset of neurodegeneration. It is not known how these plaques trigger the onset of neurodegeneration. There are several animal models developed to(i) study etiology of disease,(ii) look for genetic modifiers, and(iii) identify chemical inhibitors that can block neurodegeneration and help to find cure for this disease. An insect model of Drosophila melanogaster has also provided new insights into the disease. Here we will discuss the utility of the Drosophila eye model to study Alzheimer's disease. | Ankita Sarkar Madison Irwin Aditi Singh Matthew Riccetti Amit Singh | 2016 | Neural Regeneration Research2016,11,5: | 4
Conceptual model about the interaction between El Nio/ Southern Oscillation and Quasi-Biennial Oscillation in far west equatorial Pacific显示文摘Interaction between the Quasi-Biennial Oscillation in far west equatorial Pacific (QBOWP) and the El Ni?o/Southern Oscillation (ENSO) is studied using a new conceptual model. In this con- ceptual model, the QBOWP effects on ENSO are achieved through two ways: (1) the oceanic Kelvin wave along equatorial Pacific, and (2) the Atmospheric Walker Circulation anomaly, while ENSO ef- fects on QBOWP can be accomplished by the atmospheric Walker Circulation anomaly. Diagnosis analysis of the model results shows that the Atmospheric bridge (Walker circulation) plays a more important role in interaction between the ENSO and QBOWP than the oceanic bridge (oceanic Kelvin wave along equatorial Pacific); It is found that by the interaction of the ENSO and QBOWP, a free ENSO oscillation with 3-5 years period could be substituted by a oscillation with the quasi-biennial period, and the dominant period of SST anomaly and wind anomaly in the far west equatorial Pacific tends to be prolonged with enhanced ENSO forcing. Generally, the multi-period variability in the cou- pled Atmosphere-Ocean System in the Tropical Pacific can be achieved through the interaction be- tween ENSO and QBOWP. | LIU Qinyu1, LIU Zhengyu2,1 & PAN Aijun 1,3 1. | 9 | Towards high-power, high-coherence, integrated photonic mm Wave platform with microcavity solitons显示文摘Millimetre-wave(mmWave)technology continues to draw great interest due to its broad applications in wireless communications, radar, and spectroscopy.Compared to pure electronic solutions,photonic-based mmWave generation provides wide bandwidth, low power dissipation, and remoting through low-loss fibres. However,at high frequencies, two major challenges exist for the photonic system:the power roll-off of the photodiode, and the large signal linewidth derived directly from the lasers. Here,we demonstrate a new photonic mmWave platform combining integrated microresonator solitons and high-speed photodiodes to address the challenges in both power and coherence. The solitons, being inherently mode-locked,are measured to provide 5.8 dB additional gain through constructive interference among mmWave beatnotes, and the absolute mmWave power approaches the theoretical limit of conventional heterodyne detection at 100 GHz.In our free-running system, the soliton is capable of reducing the mmWave linewidth by two orders of magnitude from that of the pump laser. Our work leverages microresonator solitons and high-speed modified uni-traveling carrier photodiodes to provide a viable path to chip-scale,high-power,low-noise,high-frequency sources for mmWave applications. | Beichen Wang Jesse SMorgan Keye Sun Mandana Jahanbozorgi Zijiao Yang Madison Woodson Steven Estrella Andreas Beling Xu Yi | 2021 | Light(Science & Applications)2021,10,1: | 3

Targeting epidermal Langerhans cells by epidermal powder immunization显示文摘Immune reactions to foreign or self-antigens lead to protective immunity and, sometimes, immune disorders such as allergies and autoimmune diseases. Antigen presenting cells (APC) including epidermal Langerhans cells (LCs) play an important role in the course and outcome of the immune reactions. Epidermal powder immunization (EPI) is a technology that offers a tool to manipulate the LCs and the potential to harness the immune reactions towards prevention and treatment of infectious diseases and immune disorders. | DEXIANG CHEN, LENDON G PAYNEPowderJect Vaccines, Inc. 585 Science Drive, Madison, WI 53711, USA | 2002 | Cell Research2002,12,2: | 2

Neuropathy experienced by colorectal cancer patients receiving oxaliplatin: A qualitative study to validate the Functional Assessment of Cancer Therapy/Gynecologic Oncology Group-Neurotoxicity scale显示文摘BACKGROUND Although oxaliplatin is widely established as a standard treatment in colorectal cancer(CRC),oxaliplatin-induced neuropathy has emerged as a prominent doselimiting side effect associated with quality of life decrements.Ongoing monitoring and management of neuropathy is important for CRC patient quality of life and adherence to treatment. Therefore,a validated self-reported measure of neuropathy would aid in the management and assessment of oxaliplatininduced neuropathy in clinical practice and research. We sought to evaluate the content validity of the 13-item Functional Assessment of Cancer Therapy/Gynecologic Oncology Group-Neurotoxicity subscale(FACT/GOGNtx)for CRC patients receiving oxaliplatin.AIM To understand the neuropathy experiences of CRC patients and assess content validity of the FACT/GOG-Ntx.METHODS Semi-structured concept elicitation and cognitive debriefing interviews were conducted with 31 CRC patients experiencing peripheral neuropathy from current or previous oxaliplatin treatment.Interview data were analyzed using a constant comparative approach, and data were mapped to the FACT/GOG-Ntx to assess content validity.RESULTS Mean age of the sample was 54(range 34-82).The sample was primarily Caucasian(84%)and consisted of nearly equal numbers of men and women.Participants described 28 unique neuropathy symptoms;hand tingling(experienced by 87%of respondents);feet tingling(81%);hand numbness(68%);and feet numbness(84%)were most frequently mentioned.Neuropathy symptoms occurring on the feet were most often identified as most bothersome by participants.Eleven of the 13 FACT/GOG-Ntx items exhibited moderate to strong evidence of content validity. Two items related to trouble hearing and ringing in the ears had weak support;however, these items represent severe neuropathy and could be useful for a patient reported outcome measure.CONCLUSION The FACT/GOG-Ntx represents the key neuropathy experiences of CRC patients treated with oxaliplatin. | Karen Kaiser Madison Lyleroehr Sara Shaunfield Leilani Lacson Maria Corona Sheetal Kircher Malin Nittve David Cella | 2020 | World Journal of Gastrointestinal Oncology2020,12,2: | 2
gFACs:Gene Filtering,Analysis, and Conversion to Unify Genome Annotations Across Alignment and Gene Prediction Frameworks显示文摘Published genomes frequently contain erroneous gene models that represent issues associated with identification of open reading frames, start sites, splice sites, and related structural features. The source of these inconsistencies is often traced back to integration across text file formats designed to describe long read alignments and predicted gene structures. In addition, the majority of gene prediction frameworks do not provide robust downstream filtering to remove problematic gene annotations, nor do they represent these annotations in a format consistent with current file standards. These frameworks also lack consideration for functional attributes, such as the presence or absence of protein domains that can be used for gene model validation. To provide oversight to the increasing number of published genome annotations,we present a software package, the Gene Filtering,Analysis, and Conversion(gFACs),to filter, analyze, and convert predicted gene models and alignments. The software operates across a wide range of alignment, analysis, and gene prediction files with a flexible framework for defining gene models with reliable structural and functional attributes.gFACs supports common downstream applications, including genome browsers, and generates extensive details on the filtering process, including distributions that can be visualized to further assess the proposed gene space.gFACs is freely available and implemented in Perl with support from BioPerl libraries at http://gffzzfe7b028a01ac400fs6ouxbkkbubxb6qwn.ffgz.tsg.suse.edu.cn/PlantGenomicsLab/gFACs. | Madison Caballero Jill Wegrzyn | 2019 | Genomics, Proteomics & Bioinformatics2019,17,3: | 2

| 16 | An OGCM Simulation of Seasonal and Interannual Variabilities in the Surface-Layer Pacific of the Equatorial Band显示文摘The heat budget is analyzed in the surface-layer (0-50 m) Pacific of the equatorial band (10°S-10°N), using the simulation of an ocean general circulation model from 1945 to 1993. The analysis indicates that downward net surface heat flux from the atmosphere and ocean advective heat fluxes play distinct roles in seasonal and interannual variabilities of surface-layer ocean temperature. The surface heat flux dominantly determines the ocean temperature in the seasonal time-scale. But, it has a negative feedback to the ocean temperature in the interannual time-scale. The interannual variability of ocean temperature is largely associated with the cold advection from off-equatorial divergent flow in the central Pacific and from upwelling in the cold tongue. Both the surface heat flux and ocean advective heat fluxes are important to the ocean temperature during an El Nino event. The ocean. advective heat fluxes are further associated with local westward trade wind in the central Pacific. These results are largely consistent with some regional observational analyses. | Boyin Huang and Zhengyu Liu Department of Atmospheric and Oceanic Sciences, University of Wisconsin-Madison 1225 W.
